Production & Process

I created this design around October, when I tried to design something everyday for a whole month. I had a stock photo of a tiger and I wanted to do something creative with it. I started off with a radial gradient going from black to brown. I then overlayed a tiger skin and a rough paper texture over the original background. I then extracted the tiger from its background and placed it over the background.

I also added some paint textures and splatter. Next, I wanted to darken up the image a bit and enhance the contrast, so I played around with some blending modes. Lastly, because the tiger’s eyes started to get too dark, I brightened up their eyes and made it stand out more.

It’s always good to be able to articulate design choices to your clients; why you put something where, why you chose the color scheme you did, etc. This knowledge is one of the biggest differences between a designer and a non-designer. But there is a lot to remember when it comes to the realm of graphic design – so much so that it’s pretty much impossible to remember everything from all the theories of graphic design, to web design best practices to Photoshop keyboard shortcuts.

With that in mind, I decided it would be useful for me to have all of the basics of color theory contained in one place – specifically, a cool infographic-esque poster. This way, I can quickly reference things that may have slipped to the back of my mind since design school. The end result is this: The Color Theory Quick Reference Poster for Designers.

The idea is that this graphic can be either printed out or used as a desktop wallpaper. During meetings, phone calls, or any other sort of client interaction, you can reference this poster if you need to – either for your own benefit, or to point something out to your client.

The graphic contains info on:

• the basic color wheel
• passive vs. active colors
• cool vs. warm colors
• subtractive vs. additive color
• color types
• color relationships
• meanings attached to colors
• basic terms pertaining to color

Conceptual Development of this Design

Read a a bit about what James has to say about the development of this design below.

I wanted to design something bright and striking for the team at the Tuts+ Network which had me diving into sci-fi material from the 70s and 80s, most notably were old Omni Magazine covers. Omni had a way of creating interesting imagery for their covers that were somehow vague enough to leave a lot to your imagination. This is the chord I wanted to strike with the poster, I even modeled the type after Omni’s title.

After several different concepts and hours of development, one version involved a colorful exploding astronaut, the poster finally settled on the version seen here . . . the space medusa I lovingly nicknamed ‘La Femme II’ after my previous poster.

When the clock strikes twelve on December 31st, people all over the world cheer and wish one another a very Happy New Year. Graphic Mania wishes you happy new year and achieve your dreams in the new year.

I would like to celebrate with you with a new 2010 calendar and wallpaper from the Egyptian culture. The design of the calendar is based on a photo for the Citadel of Saladin in Cairo that I took last week. I tried to add more ancient effect and dramatic light style.
