YouTube has just revealed that it is rolling out a new video player that supports HTLM5, one that can be accessed via YouTube’s TestTube idea incubator.

In an announcement earlier today, the Google-owned online video service stated that an HTML5-compatible player was the #1 request of its users. HTML5 is the upcoming new standard for the markup language behind most web pages, one that supports video, audio, drag-and-drop, canvas drawing, and many other new features and APIs.

Since HTML5 supports video embeds, YouTube has rolled out a version of its player that runs just on it. No browser plugins (e.g. Flash) are required to watch videos that support HTML5.

There are limitations, though. It doesn’t work with videos that have advertising, captions, or annotations. It also only works with HTML5-compatible browsers, meaning Chrome or Safari (or Chrome Frame for IE if you so choose).

You can take a look at a demo of the new HTML5 player here. As you can probably tell, it could use some more work, but YouTube promises to improve the interface over time.

We think this is a step in the right direction. While we don’t think Google should just switch over to HTML5 (Flash just allows for more functionality), we do think user should have the option.

The comic video is made in true JibJab-style and features the oversized heads of Jay Leno and Conan “COCO” O’Brien (he’s the female in the portrayal) as Olympic pairs skaters in tight, sparkling costumes.

Of course the mock-Olympic moment was made to commemorate JibJab’s latest Figure Skating “Starring You” video campaign, which lets anyone affix his own head atop the figure skating bodies to create an Olympic memory — much like the annual Elf Yourself viral holiday e-card campaign.

If “Pants on the Ground” remixes and burning banana suits aren’t your thing, don’t fret, there’s a whole new reason to use YouTube: movie rentals.

The Google-owned video site debuted online movie rentals today on a very limited basis, allowing users to rent five different flicks from the Sundance Film Festival using their Google Checkout accounts. The company says “a small collection of rental videos from other U.S. partners across different industries, including health and education, will be made available in the weeks ahead.”

Last year, it was reported that YouTube was in talks with movie studios to offer rentals of major motion pictures, creating what would be dubbed an instant Netflix killer. This is far from that, but represents what could become a massively important part of YouTube’s future. Don’t forget — the site is also continuing to push ahead with HD and making its content big screen-friendly.

Slowly, but surely, we expect YouTube to continue in this direction, and other moves like introducing live sports and streaming full-length films offer just a hint of what’s to come from the video site over the next few years. In a video interview with Bloomberg, Twitter COO Dick Costolo said his company will not try to make an initial public offering this year, but instead focus on expanding and making more money.

That’s further affirmation of Twitter’s apparent strategy; co-founder Biz Stone said a month ago that he and his colleagues “are definitely not interested in selling the company.”

Costolo said he expects revenue growth from a new advertising platform that’s coming “very soon,” commercial accounts with analytics features for tracking tweets and traffic, and at least 10 more distribution deals in the future. Twitter has drawn some criticism because the company’s revenues are low for its $1 billion valuation. That is clearly a concern within the company, and something that needs to be addressed before an IPO. “Now we have to go build the business the business that lives up to that valuation,” Costolo said.

Expansion into new areas and features is part of the plan despite slowing growth (or maybe in response to it), but Costolo didn’t go into specifics in the Bloomberg video. He did say that the company will be aggressive in making acquisitions of companies that have something to offer in the areas into which Twitter wants to expand.

Thwapr, a mobile-to-mobile video-sharing program that launches its public beta today, is focused on creating an easy-to-use cross-platform solution for sharing photos and videos with other people, regardless of what type of phone they use.

The Problem With Current Options

The problem with current mobile-to-mobile video- or photo-sharing options is that they don’t work reliably with different platforms. Sure, I can send an MMS message to practically anyone, but that photo is often tied directly to my phone. If I switch devices or lose my phone, my photos are gone too.

The other big problem is that although services like TwitPic exist, they focus mostly on smartphones. My mom still has an old Motorola Razr. She can actually record and view video, but obviously she can’t get a TwitPic-compatible application, which makes it hard for us to share photos.

Even among smartphones, the different video standards can create a problem for users. Sure, YouTube is supported on more and more mobile devices, but it’s not universal.

Thwapr’s Solution

Thwapr is a free service that addresses these issues. Utilizing SMS messaging and e-mail, you can send video and photos to almost anyone with a cell phone. Thwapr supports more than 170 different devices on carriers in the U.S. and Canada (international countries are coming soon).

Here’s how it works: A friend can send you a picture or a video using Thwapr. You get notified by an SMS message that gives you a link. That link will take you to a site that has been tested across mobile browsers and then it will display the photo or encode the video (on the fly) in a format optimized for your mobile device.

You can then respond to that message, or “thwap” by either entering a comment or sending your own photo or video back to the person. You can upload using e-mail, and on devices that lack e-mail support, MMS. I did a number of real-time demos with Thwapr’s CTO yesterday and I was impressed with the speed with which I could both send and receive video or photos.

Simplicity and Cross-platform Is Key

The key to Thwapr is that it works with so many different platforms. You can use it on a BlackBerry, an iPhone, an Android device, and the new Nokia N900 and Palm devices (from the old Palm OS and webOS). You’re notified that your upload is complete via SMS or e-mail (you can choose how you want to be notified) and you can add users to your friends list to easily send stuff their way.

Future Plans

Thwapr is opening up its public beta today, but the company already has some big plans. Not only is Thwapr deep in development on an iPhone app, but it is also looking at ways that people can respond directly to thwaps by placing orders. Think about the possibilities of marrying something like a Thwapr video of what’s going on with Haiti with the ability to donate by responding to a Thwap.

Thwapr is also looking at geo-location so that advertisers can do sponsored thwaps to local users, which opens up all kind of cool possibilities. A movie theater could send thwaps to subscribed users with a new movie trailer and you could pre-order tickets in response.

Sharing video via mobile devices is only going to get bigger, but cross-compatibility is key. This is why Thwapr is so exciting.

Want to do something nice for your loved ones? Keep in touch with them more often. If you’ve got friends or family members who aren’t so good about online communication, these apps and tips make video chat, simplified email, and photo sharing easier to do on a regular basis.

Making a web connection isn’t about “fixing” a relative’s computer—though that’s not a bad idea, next time you’re visiting. It’s about lowering the barriers for communication, for both yourself and the person on the other end, so you can get used to keeping in touch through the easiest available methods.

If it’s that hard for you, it’s doubly hard for a person who didn’t constantly have a computer in front of them their whole careers. There are, thankfully, solutions that don’t require either side to invest far too much time and effort to get started with. The reward is time well spent with far-off family members, which will certainly pay dividends for a long time to come.

Set up their computer

The apps we want to use to connect are pretty easy to install, for the most part. But if sending a bunch of download links over email to a relative isn’t a realistic option, you can do the setting up yourself, from nearly anywhere in the world, with minimal pain. We’ve previously provided an in-depth list of tools for giving tech support or grabbing files from any system, but below are the two easiest solutions. (We’re not even going to pretend your relatives are using Linux, but, if they are, see if you can walk them through connecting to your reverse VNC setup.)

CrossLoop: (Windows) The How-To Geek loves this little remote-control app, and for good reason: It’s a VNC remote control app without all the back-end fiddling (“Do you know your IP address, Uncle Robert? Okay, type ‘cmd’ into the start bar …”). The client only has to install the software and tell you their access code, and you run the same app and connect from your end. The Geek’s site detailed the connection in a screenshot tour. It’s secure enough for a one-shot Skype setup or settings fiddling, because it requires a fairly complex code and doesn’t persist on the computer beyond your session and the next time they shut down.

LogMeIn Free: (Windows/Mac) It’s another fancy, all-in-one VNC client, but it works between PCs and Macs. Doesn’t offer the remote file transfer of CrossLoop, and is just a little more complicated for the relative you’re having install it to get going with it. Still, it claims and (generally) delivers “two-minute setup,” and, though intended for accessing your own home computer at the office and elsewhere, it’s still works as a tech support tool. There’s also LogMeIn Express, which is even more simple, fast, and support-oriented.

Make their system more accessible

If you’ve got remote access to a relatives’ computer, you can also make it easier for them to use. Bigger type, screen magnification, higher contrast themes, and other tools can make the computer an easier place to navigate for older relatives, but they might never discover those options on their own.

You can read up on the built-in accessibility tools inside OS X, in Windows 7, Windows Vista, and Windows XP.

Set up video chat

These days, nearly every laptop has a webcam and microphone built in, and USB-connected webcams are cheap and easy to set up. Video chat is a lot more personal than a phone call, and feels like the next best thing to jumping in your car and visiting. (It’s especially good for keeping up with the grandkids, nieces, and nephews as they continue to grow up so fast.)

Skype is the go-to pick for video chat—it works on Windows, Mac, and Linux, and it’s been designed to be fairly easy to install and get started without having to dive into the preferences and configuration settings. If you’re not there, either in-person or remotely, most computer users can set up Skype just by clicking Next, Next, OK all the way through the installation process, minus one pause to set up an account. They’ll end up with Skype automatically starting and logging them in when their computer boots into Windows, but that’s something you can undo later, or not worry too much about if they’ve got a decently new system.

If most of your relatives have Macs, iChat is probably easier to set up and use than Skype. It is, however, limited to Macs, and so a fairly limiting option for families not entirely descended from typeface designers (Kidding!).

If Skype isn’t going to work for your relatives, in terms of software setup, try the web-based TokBox. It’s free for both parties, it’s one of our readers’ favorite video chat applications, and the quality is surprisingly good for a web-based client. You can sign up your relative for an account ahead of time, then simply email them a link to the chat you’re initiating with them, along with their username and password.

Last, Gmail’s video chat functionality installs via a browser plug-in and works surprisingly well, too—provided everyone involved has a Gmail account.

Better email for everyone

You don’t always have time, or the right hair, to jump into a video chat. Sending an email is probably second nature to you, but some relatives hate their email—and you would, too, if you had it their way. Help them reconnect with the (type)written word.

The New York Times recommends a stripped-down email service called PawPawMail for computer unsavvy relatives, which any more tech-patient relative can set up for the email account that they’ve likely received from their cable, DSL, or other internet provider. It’s a nice, simplified interface for email, and probably far easier to use than Outlook Express, Windows Live Mail, or even Mail.app for Mac—the picture aggregation is a nice touch. Then again, it’s also $5 per month, so you’ll want to test it out before committing.

My own mother also grew to loathe desktop email clients, especially when Verizon tech support would have to talk her through SMTP setup when she spent time at our summer camp. The Verizon webmail interface just wasn’t cutting it, either. So, using Gina’s guide to consolidating multiple email addresses with Gmail, and Gmail’s mail and contact importer, I set her up with a Gmail account that used her same password and, more importantly, sent and received email transparently through Verizon.net. Her friends didn’t have to update their address books, and once she saw the magic of auto-complete, as-you-type contact names, she was hooked. I also set up sidebar labels, hooked to filters, that show her emails from her children, automatic notices of bills due, Netflix updates, and so on.

Photo sharing

My in-laws have a desktop computer in the living room, as well as a laptop. My wife and I would only occasionally receive digital photos from them, and they’d either be gigantic, 3 MB-each files, or tiny thumbnails forwarded from a photo developing service. While at their house at Thanksgiving, I showed them the Picasa desktop software (available on Windows and Macs), particularly the clever facial recognition and easy collage features. I set it up on their system, set it to always watch their desktop, downloads, and pictures folder, and returned home.

When we returned for the holidays, they had a special gift prepared for a son of theirs: a T-shirt featuring a photo collage of family members, assembled and ordered right from Picasa. I was pretty floored; these were folks I’ve long been the Computer Explainer for, but Picasa was intuitive enough for them to manage on their own, even into the advanced features. The main thing that required a little explanation was the somewhat quirky “holding”/thumbtack system, and its difference from “Starred” photos, but other than that, it’s a perfect photo simplifier: the left-hand folders are albums that show up automatically, the main window is filled with pictures, and photos are automatically knocked into manageable but visible size for emailing—and it’s even easier if you set up a Gmail holder account for the user.

A group of 30 high-tech companies led by Alcatel-Lucent and QNX Software Systems – The ng Connect Program – have created a prototype car to show how 4G networks could open the automobile to a variety of mobile technologies. The term 4G refers to the fourth-generation of wireless service that is now under development for deployment in the U.S.

Under the 4G approach, the car could access wireless services allowing the interior to act as Wi-Fi hot spot of sorts. Passengers can access a variety of services all at once and tailor them to their personal needs. For example, a backseat passenger could watch a movie while the front seat passenger shops online.

The cars would be equipped with devices that would block drivers from accessing some of the entertainment features, such as watching YouTube, while the vehicle is in motion.

The concept car shows how video on demand could be accesses by passengers by the touch of a screen as well as gaming where competitors play against each other in the back seat or anywhere in the world. The 4G would allow more home control options such as turning on lights before pulling into the driveway or monitoring the house from streaming video cameras.

In the face of disaster, small acts of heroism can add up. Even sending a simple SMS can lead to more than $20 million raised for relief efforts surrounding the Haiti earthquake.

Enter another small act of heroism, this time on the part of CNN anchor Anderson Cooper. While filming in Haiti, Cooper was in the vicinity when a store fight reportedly broke out and left a boy wounded after suffering a blow to the head from a concrete block. In the video below (Warning: It’s on the graphic side), Cooper extricates the boy from the confrontation to relative safety.

The footage enters into a larger dialogue surrounding the role of journalists as impartial observers in dire situations like the Haiti disaster. As medical correspondents become field doctors and newscasters rescue children from the crossfire, it’s a timely ethical debate perhaps without a clear-cut solution.

What’s your take: Do journalists have a duty to provide aid in life-threatening situations or does that level of emotional engagement impact the independence required for good journalism?

Those flash mob pranksters and viral video virtuosos Improv Everywhere have posted the footage from the ninth annual No Pants Subway Ride, which saw more than 5,000 people drop their pants on the ground and take over public transportation in their skivvies.

More than 3,000 in New York City alone went pantsless on Sunday, January 10 to inspire smirks, double takes, and general hijinx on ten of NYC’s subway lines. You can get the backstory on all nine years of the tradition including videos from past years.

Tag photos directly on the camera and use the “Share” button for an effortless upload to Facebook, Flickr, YouTube or e-mail via a PC or a Mac.

3. Sony Bloggie PM5

The new Bloggie cameras are Sony’s take on the growing PVC (pocket video camcorder) market, which has so far been dominated by the Flip. The pocketable PM5 offers simple capture of 1920×1080, YouTube-friendly, H.264 MP4 video and 5-megapixel still photos, as well as a built-in USB port (losing the wire spaghetti) and easy web sharing capabilities. The PM5 also boasts a lens that can rotate 270 degrees for some artsy angles, or to capture yourself. The camera comes preloaded with Sony’s PMB software that works with PCs and Macs to make direct upload to Shutterfly, Picasa, YouTube, Dailymotion and Photobucket easy-peasy. Perhaps more suited to the pro-blogger than the casual YouTube user, this full-featured camcorder is the world’s first to offer built-in Wi-Fi and DLNA connectivity, and should make getting your cutting-edge content online a cinch — or at the very least, wire-free. It boasts a 64GB solid state drive (as opposed to its little brother model HMX-S15’s 32GB) and gets Samsung’s “AllShare” functionality, which means content can be shared to other DLNA certified devices. The integrated Wi-Fi connectivity also allows for live streaming over the ‘Net via a DLNA-happy PC.

5. Eye-Fi Memory Card

If you already own a favored digi-cam, or want to stick with your high-end DSLR, but do want to get more connected, then these clever memory cards from Eye-Fi can add some connectivity to your existing kit, if it supports them.

Eye-Fi offers a whole range of SD and SDHC memory cards that boast wireless connectivity, meaning you can easily upload your images and video over a Wi-Fi network. Specs vary depending on the model, with some cards working only with JPEG files and your PC over a home network. A clever reader at Hack a Day wrote in and shared his 360-degree video rig and included links to two sample videos. The device is constructed of little more than some basic hardware store parts like a threaded rod, a mirrored light bulb, and a small sheet of glass. Although he didn’t include the price, it couldn’t have cost more than $20-30 to construct, if that.

Google has fronted the cash so that YouTube director Patrick Bolvin could make a viral unboxing video for the Nexus One smartphone.

Gadget geeks on the Internet relish making and watching unboxing videos, gushing over new gadgets like a child who’s just unwrapped a Nintendo Wii on Christmas morning. However, these unboxings are rarely executed by squads of miniature, stop-motion ninjas. This video is a notable exception.

The video is also available in HD, but you’ll have to go all the way to YouTube for that. As we’re writing this, it has more than 1,000 ratings with an average of five stars. Let’s call it a hit.

If you were one of the million-plus viewers who tuned in during 2008 to watch the adorable antics of this famous litter of puppies, you’re in luck: The second wave of pups — from the original mother — has arrived. Get ready for cute overload.

The first round of pups became a viral sensation after their San Francisco owners set up a webcam to monitor their movements while at work, streaming footage of the puppies live via Ustream. The cam was set up at the beginning of October, and by October 13, three million viewers had spent 1.2 million hours taking in the doggie drama. Hell, the cam even won the People’s Voice Webby Award. It was a veritable phenomenon, feeding off of people’s proclivity for adorable creatures.

Sadly, around Christmas, all the puppies — save one — were adopted, leaving us with a gaping void where our heart of hearts used to be.

Well, canine lovers can now rejoice, because it appears as though as of today, the dogs are back and cuter than ever. Behold:

The amount of money Conan O’Brien will get in a settlement with NBC and from a deal with a new TV network will likely be equal to at least a few percentage points of the entire online video market. Still, that’s not stopping Revision3 from offering O’Brien a job via an open letter.

While the online video network doesn’t specify a price — and the letter is obviously very tongue-in-cheek — they’re most likely a comma or two out of Conan’s asking price. Nonetheless, when you think about what’s unfolded over at NBC, the online outfit offers a number of compelling reasons that Conan should consider such a move:

- Ad spending in online video was up 35% in 2009

- No air time: People can watch Conan’s show at any time

- No censors: While NBC might be claiming the Masturbating Bear is their intellectual property, Conan can push the envelope even further on the web.

Is that enough for Conan to consider it? Almost certainly not, but I don’t think we’re far from a major entertainment personality testing the waters of an online-only show.

When you consider the benefits that Revision3 mentions, the huge audiences we’re starting to see for celebrity-themed live video (and the built-in audience for watching it on-demand on YouTube), and Internet-connected television, the stars are beginning to align for a Howard Stern-Sirius type moment for the medium. Just don’t bet on that moment being a Conan-Revision3 deal.

Depending on what we focus on, our brains can be completely blind to obvious changes going on around us. This is called “change blindness,” and it is unnerving when you observe it. Below are a few examples of this in action.

This first video is an experiment conducted at Harvard where 75% of the people in the test don’t notice that the man in front of them has turned into a different person. This was conducted in a formal test setting. The people involved were interviewed after the experiment to better understand their perception of events.

This next video shows change blindness being used as more of a parlor trick. Magician Derren Brown exploits this blind spot in a much more dramatic way. Changing clothes, race, and gender doesn’t seem to matter to these people on the street. This demonstration isn’t as controlled, but is a lot of fun to watch.

The last video is an “Awareness Test” that has been around for a while. You can run this test on yourself and on others.

The concept of change blindness highlights a potential problem for UX professionals. Most of the time, user researchers and UX architects begin their research with specific goals in mind, and are focused on a specific aspect of the product. But with this focus comes the risk that they will be blind to other aspects of the user’s experience. What are we failing to capture when observing people using the products we design? We need to reserve space in our work for uncovering those things that we don’t know we don’t know, and make it an official part of the process. We will observe more of the moonwalking bears that teach us valuable lessons about our users and our products.

When you set out to create a 2.3×2.5 meter image, you usually do it in a good image editor/drawing program. But a 15-year old YouTube user named scorpiongold did it in MS Paint, and it will blow your mind.

The picture is named “My MS paint World”, and it supposedly took 4 years to complete (the author admits he didn’t work on it every day, but perhaps once a week), and it shows: it’s huge, full of detail, very odd, and amazingly imaginative. If you, by any chance, remember an old ZX Spectrum game called “Go To Hell”, the imagery is somewhat similar (and you’re officially not young anymore).

The fact is that many of the features us designers use in our daily work is also available for every video editor and movie maker. There’s tons of awesome technologies that will enhance anyone to perfection if used in the right way. From filters smoothing out wrinkles to crop tools that makes anyone look like their magically lost 20 pounds overnight.

Well, there are of course some rules that apply when retouching an image or a video. Sooner or later the object in question has to enter public places at some point and that will reveal any “flaws” they have that have been taken away during the retouch process. So, staying true to the persons true identity is to be preferred.

Watching this video really put things in perspective and although we know about these “refinements” we willingly see them as perfection and the norm for how we should all look in order to be accepted and adored. It’s ultimately wrong and will most likely create a sense of megalomania for the object of idolization instead of creating a believable image of someone everyone can truly look up to. But, what should be said as well is that the major part of the most successful celebrities haven’t done anything to alter their true personality and beauty. This way they have preserved their unique and truthful image. Now, you are the judge and no one can take that away from you.

YouTube has a global audience, so if you want to reach as many people as possible, you’ll have to make sure subtitles are available for your videos. You’ll want closed captioning to reach the deaf and hard of hearing, too. Thankfully, that process has shifted from relatively easy to an absolute breeze in recent months. Here’s how to make it happen.

Once you’ve uploaded a video to your YouTube account, you have two options for generating subtitles for the video: You can use the CaptionTube web app that Google has created, or you can upload a transcript you make yourself and use Google’s speech recognition technology to automatically assign the right times to each caption. In either case, you’ll end up with a text file that you can edit to make corrections if need be, and viewers will be able to either read the captions in their native language or translate them on the fly when watching your video.

First, direct your browser to the CaptionTube website and you’ll find a well-realized web application for importing videos, adding and timing captions for them, and exporting the captions however you want them. You’ll have to sign in with your Google account. After you’ve done that, you’ll have two options for importing a video; you can either import a list of all the videos on your account, or you can specify the web address for a public video.

Whichever way you go, the path to importing the video you want is a pretty easy one. Click the edit button next to your video once it’s been imported to get to the caption creation screen.

Click the “Add Caption” button and then type in what you want your caption to say. Pick a start time in seconds and milliseconds, then specify how long the caption will stay on the screen. Once you save it, it will appear in a time line at the bottom of the app so you can see it in relation to other captions. When you’ve added all your captions, click publish.

Choose the “Download to My Computer” option (either file format will work) and CaptionTube will give you a text file that you can tweak as needed and add to your videos. To add the file to your video, go to your YouTube My Videos page, find your video, and click the “Caption” button to reach the caption options. Click the button to add new captions, browse to find the file CaptionTube gave you, check the “Caption file (includes time codes)” option, and hit “Upload File.” That ought to do it.

Captions By Voice Recognition

The CaptionTube method used to be the only easy way to add captions to your video, but Google introduced a new one towards the end of 2009: captions generated by voice recognition. Google’s computers use the same technology that powers Google Voice to listen to your video while reading your transcript, then automatically generate captions at the right times.

First you’ll have to watch your video and create your own simple transcript of the words spoken in the video. This should be pretty easy; no special formatting is required. Just save it as a basic text file using Notepad if you’re a Windows user or TextEdit if you have a Mac.

After you’ve saved the file, go to your YouTube My Videos page, find your video, and click the “Caption” button to reach the caption options. There you can click the button to add new captions, browse to locate your new text file, and select the “Transcript” option. Hit “Upload File” after that.

YouTube will think for a while, then your video will have captions. If Google’s voice recognition system made any errors, you can hit the download button from the captions screen to fetch a copy of the caption file with timestamps included. Make any modifications you need, then add your new captions using the “Caption file (includes time codes)” option described at the end of the CaptionTube segment of our how-to.

Additionally, 63% of parents with children who play games consider themselves gamers with the number increasing to 83% for parents ages 35 and younger, and 70% of parents pay close attention to the ratings when purchasing a game for themselves or their families.

"Parents rely on and value the ESRB ratings in helping them decide which games to allow their children to play," said Mike Griffith, President and CEO of Activision Publishing.

"Our ‘Ratings Are Not A Game’ education initiative underscores our commitment to helping parents better understand and utilize the ratings system as they select age appropriate games and determine the best way for the entire family to enjoy the gaming experience."

Other key survey findings include:

• Gamers devote 32% of their leisure time to entertainment with video games accounting for the largest share – approximately 19%.
• 76% of parents agree that video games are a part of their family’s life, and are something they’re very comfortable with.
• Among parent gamers, 52% of their video gaming playing time is spent with their children.
• Approximately 62% of parents conduct research before purchasing a video game that their child wants.

Retail sales in the PC game software industry also saw declines, with revenues down 23 percent, reaching $538 million in 2009. The total console, portable and PC game software industry hit $10.5 billion, an 11 percent decrease compared to the $11.7 billion generated in 2008.

"December sales broke all industry records and underscores the incredible value consumers find in computer and video games even in a down economy," said Michael D. Gallagher, president and CEO of the Entertainment Software Association, the trade group which represents U.S. computer and video game publishers.

"This is a very strong way to transition into 2010. I anticipate these solid sales numbers to continue upward through 2010 with a pipeline full of highly-anticipated titles."

Portable hardware was a bright spot with a 6 percent increase in revenue in 2009, while the remaining video game categories all saw declines, with the largest decrease coming from console hardware (-13%). Consoles software and portable software both saw declines of 10 percent, while video game accessories saw a 1 percent dip.

"When we started the last decade, video game industry sales, including PC games, totaled $7.98B in 2000," said Anita Frazier, industry analyst, The NPD Group.

"In ten years, the industry has changed dramatically in many ways, but most importantly it was grown over those years by more than 250 percent at retail alone.  Considering there are many new sources of revenue including subscriptions and digital distribution, industry growth is even more impressive."

During the CES in Las Vegas Sony presented an update of their camera “Bloggie” which seems to be quite a nifty little piece of hardware. They have managed to squeeze in video, pictures, USB, memory cards, changeable batteries and software into a tiny, quite handy, little gadget that looks as it’s really easy to carry around. Sony focuses their upgraded gadget at the average blogger that wants to be able to do it all and then, as easy as it can get, be able to upload it all to your blog.

There is a cool little feature if you go with the most expensive option that for around $200 will enable you to record 360 degree angle video which you can then rotate and do all kinds of things. Pretty cool, but necessary? Well, I think that one is left for the individual to decide.

But, there is however one significant flaw in the whole system there in my opinion. With a wide market of cell phones available to pretty much rich as poor then why would you go and buy this gadget. Does it even have WiFi? I mean, with a regular cell phone you can even upload and update your blog on the run. So why would this be such a huge addition to your blog? And besides, pretty much every cell phone today has both a video camera along with a static camera…except the iPhone 3G that is. LOL (Even though there is a new iPhone with video I still can’t drop the fact that they didn’t incorporate it into the first edition…lame). Well, I really don’t see the future of this little gadget from Sony. But, then again maybe I am not the average customer they have in mind…but wait, I am a blogger right? Hmm…

Fall into a deep sea of depression when faced with the listless path your life has taken. I give you: 5-year-old Jonah Rocks.

This little video hit YouTube just a few days ago, and it’s already going viral, giving other pint-sized performers like Ukulele boy and Rush Girl a run for their proverbial money.

But this little dude is no flash-in-the-pan prodigy — he even has his own website (which — be warned — has autoplay music) replete with more videos and photos of Jonah and the band K.I.S.S. His bio, from the “About Me Section”:

“Way back in 2008, at the age of 3, Jonah Rocks was lining up his Play-Doh cans to make a drum kit. He would sneak all the baby spoons from the cupboard, and use them as drumsticks. His daddy asked him if he wanted a real drum kit, and of course, Jonah said ‘YES!’ Once he sat down behind that kit, and held that first pair of 7A’s in his hands, he has never put them down, playing as much as he can, whenever he can. Jonah is completely self taught, never had a lesson, and if you’ve watched him play, you know he absolutely loves it.”

Paula’s gone and Simon has one foot out the door, but nine seasons in, American Idol can still be counted on to deliver viral video gold. The latest William Hung heir apparent is 62-year-old Larry Platt, who auditioned in my hometown, Atlanta, Georgia.

Platt, clearly too old for the show (but entertaining nonetheless) auditioned with his own song, “Pants on the Ground.” Check out the Fox-provided video below:

The video is quickly becoming viral, with this YouTube copy garnering more than 151,000 views in just over 12 hours. As for Larry, BuzzFeed might be impressed, but he’s just one in a million singing guys straight out of Five Points to me. Catchy or not, “Pants on the Ground” is no “MARTA Bus.”

A metal-drenched video of a man getting a tattoo of sunglasses on his face has been making the rounds these past few days. Turns out, Matthew — the tatted-out man in question — was hawking Ray-Bans.

Roughly two years ago, Ray-Ban launched a campaign to promote its products via social media. Remember this awesome video: Sunglass Catch?

We’ve seen a lot of attention-grabbing viral campaigns in recent months, and like past semi-racy maneuvers, this one seems to have struck a chord with viewers. The consensus seems to be: This guy is an idiot. Check out some of the comments from the Never Hide video site:

“Good luck getting a job in the future. If you walked into my office I would laugh and send you on your way.”

“This will be hilarious to him for a while, then the regret will set in the first day he wakes up and looks in the mirror and doesn’t laugh.”

“This is how you get your 15 minutes of fame.”

And the official Facebook page:

“I can’t believe someone would be so stupid. Um…did you ever think about getting a job. Good luck working minimum wage stocking shelves in the back of some store at night. Only one you will ever get. Idiot.”

People seem to mighty concerned with Matthew’s ability to find gainful employment.

Although tattoos have become much more common nowadays (hell, The New York Times reported a year ago that they were getting mainstream), and tattoo/advertisements are also nothing new, the choice to get shades etched on his face seems like a questionable life decision on Matthew’s part.

That’s right, everyone’s favorite drugged-up darling (and one of the top memes of 2009) is finally getting his say on the Comedy Central show Tosh.0: sans narcotics.

At this point, we’ve all seen the hilarious video of wee David, hopped-up and spaced-out after a trip to the dentist. Now comedian Daniel Tosh is bringing the boy back into the limelight on his weekly Internet-oriented show, the second season of which begins tonight at 10:30 p.m./9:30 p.m. C.

Tosh runs a pretty fun racket with his “Web Redemptions,” segments during which the stars of Internet viral videos get a second chance at greatness. Last season, Tosh took on Afro Ninja, Miss South Carolina, Puke Kid, Scarlet Takes a Tumble, Chris Crocker, Balloon Guy, Worst Best Man, Reh Dogg, Drunk Dunk, Skateboard Fail Girl, Tron Guy, Backyard Wrestler, Crying Giants Fan, Nintendo 64 Kid, Trampled Cheerleader and Home Shopping Fail (you can check out a recap here).

David after the Dentist marks the first Web Redemption of the season, and it promises to be a doozy, if the below clip is any indication. My favorite part? When Tosh asks D’s dad: “Do you think you’ll film him getting high as a teenager?”

Although comedy troupe Improv Everywhere has yet to post the official video of yesterday’s No Pants! Subway Ride in New York City, footage of the stunt is already all over the web.

Every January since 2002, a group of brave participants in the Big Apple get together to perform one daring (and more than slightly unsanitary) feat: Riding the subway sans pants.

This year, Improv Everywhere — which is described on its website as a group of thousands of “undercover agents” who “cause scenes of chaos and joy in public places” — rallied together close to 3,000 folks in their skivvies to parade through the tubes. The end of the road was Union Square, where the pantless wonders converged after braving the 28-degree chill.

Although the sheer silliness and scale of the prank is noteworthy, perhaps more impressive is how fast footage of the event has leaked onto the web. Improv Everywhere plans to have an official video out next week, but there’s already tons of videos, like the one below, flooding YouTube as we speak.

So the question becomes: Will anyone care enough to tune in next week? Or will they get their fill of fripperies today and today alone? While you ruminate over that notion, check out last year’s official vid below:
