Basically, Vexel is the combination of two words; “Vector” and “Pixel”, and can be defined as the pixel-based form of digital art that emulates the vector graphics technique, but is different from normal vector graphics or raster images.

Well, I am a 23 year old from Sao Paulo Brazil, and was raised basically watching movies. I always had a passion for visual audio. Being Cinema, Television, Commercials, VideoClips, I always loved the combination and the mix of visual, and music.

I speak four languages (Portuguese, French, Spanish, and English). I come from a multi-cultural family but was raised in Sao Paulo and I consider myself Brazilian.

I’m currently living in Los Angeles, trying out my lucky on the World of Cinema. I almost had the luck of signing with a commercial director but it didn’t work out. There is a lot of things involved on the process and a lot of risks for both sides therefore I continue looking for an opportunity.

More of those prism-shaped Kleenex boxes for Target—the same construction as those “Perfect Slice of Summer” boxes.

The sweet, felted illustrations by Betz White, in this context, turn the the usual idea of a crafted tissue box cover on its head. Toilet paper cozies and tissue box covers, have long been a staple of middle-American craft projects—(I remember my stepfather’s mother in Louisville having one of: these)—and the motivation for disguising packaged products has a lot to do with the public’s (former) ambivalence about keeping branded products out in the open.

Betz White’s project for Kleenex brings this idea full circle. Like a crafty wolf in Christmas sheep’s clothing, each of these “decorator” boxes proudly wears its faux “hand-crafted” covering, slyly embracing Grandma’s (now quaint) idea that commercial packaging should not be on display in your home.

Social media’s power to spread the word is well known, as is its ability to help fuel charitable causes. The examples are many, including TweetsGiving, #BlameDrewsCancer, the Social Media Smackdown, Twestival, and the Mashable Summer of Social Good. Need we go on?

Now social media’s help is being enlisted to once again take up the fight for clean water. Next month, a group of people (including Jessicia Biel, Lupe Fiasco, and Kenna) will climb Mt. Kilimanjaro in an attempt to bring over 2.5 million liters of water to those in need. But they are looking to Facebook, online video, and the social media masses for help.

That’s a Long Way Up…

Here’s the basic gist: on January 7th, a group of celebrities, well-known figures, and social entrepreneurs will attempt to climb to the summit of the 19,340 foot African peak. At every step of the way, they will upload pictures and videos, as well as tweet about their progress.

The goal here is awareness about the 1 billion people that don’t have full access to clean water, but it’s also a fundraiser. For every person that joins the Summit on the Summit Facebook Cause Page or watches a web video from the climbers, HP will donate $1 (100 liters of water). In addition, for every $1 someone donates, HP will match it, up to $25,000. Intel, PUR, the United Nations Foundation, and Eddie Bauer are also partners in the effort.

The money raised will go to several charities working towards bringing clean water to others, specifically Children’s Safe Drinking Water, UNHCR and PlayPumps International.

The entire effort looks to be one giant social media blitz. Facebook Causes, Twitter, online video, and blogs are in full effect for their campaign. Combine with some all-star personalities, a tough challenge, and a worthy cause, we think Summit on the Summit could really make a lot of noise.

It’s important to note that this isn’t some superfluous, feel-good pact.  Eran Hammer-Lahav, Director of Standards Development at Yahoo and President of the Open Web Foundation explained in a post on Yodel Anecdotal, "While Open Source software enjoys a wide range of licenses for making software freely available, specifications and standards are usually licensed under a complex set of rules and conditions."

He then continued, "These licenses are hard to read and spread over many pages full of terms even many lawyers don’t fully understand.  There was also no suitable standalone agreement available for companies and communities to use when making their work available, forcing them into long and costly legal negotiation between the contributors."

The Open Web Foundation Agreement should address most of those problems.  It’s a relatively short, relatively simple, and easily tailored document that’s meant to be serve individual developers, large corporations, and everything in between.

The fact that so many important organizations support the Agreement should ensure that it actually gets some use, too, and perhaps becomes the standard it’s meant to be.  Without Facebook, Google, Microsoft, and Yahoo, the Open Web Foundation Agreement – interesting as it is – might be forgotten within days or weeks.

But as things stand, Hammer-Lahav concluded, "This is just the first step in what we hope will be a new path for open collaboration and innovation on the web."

The FoxPop app is free and works by "listening" and syncing to an exact moment in a movie, using real-time audio recognition technology. As events happen in the movie, facts and trivia automatically "pop up" on the iPhone or computer offering viewers new information each time they watch a movie. From am actor on the screen, a location, or song, FoxPop provides users with information about the scene.

FoxPop will launch with the DVD release of "Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian" on December 1. Other films slated to receive the FoxPop treatment include "500 Days of Summer" and "Jennifer’s Body."

Additional application features include the ability for users to share and chat with friends while watching a movie via social networks such as Facebook and Twitter. A collapsible dashboard "Now Playing" feature provides users with a large space to see information about characters, places and trivia related to the film.

"By providing interesting movie-related information and the ability to engage with fellow Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian audiences, the application creates a powerful new connection between the movie and its viewers," said Mary Daily, EVP North America Marketing of Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment.

The movies have always been a communal, social experience. Whether you’re sitting in the theater with a hundred strangers or piled in your living room with family and friends, it’s just fun to watch movies with others.

Social media and our increasing addiction to digital technologies has had an interesting effect on the movie-watching experience. Admit it, how often do you send out a tweet while watching a Blu-ray or DVD title at home? How often do you check IMDB or scour Wikipedia for information about an actor or factoid in the film? Spot411 and Fox Home Entertainment have decided to partner together to better meld the social experience of watching a movie with social media.

FoxPop

Spot411 has developed an application called FoxPop that adds interactive elements to your movie watching experience. You can download FoxPop on your computer (it’s built using Adobe AIR so you can use it on Mac or PC) or use the free iPhone app that launches on December 1.

When you first start up the app, it looks like a regular Twitter or Facebook client. You can login with your credentials, send messages and see what others are doing or saying. However, the cool part is what happens when you start a FoxPop compatible movie. The software identifies what film is playing based on audio (so you can use the iPhone app while watching a movie in your home theater or the desktop app while watching on your laptop or desktop) and immediately skins itself to match the film.

At this point, based on where you are in the film, the FoxPop app will start showing you updates that include trivia, behind-the-scenes information about the film, and the coolest part — comments from your friends on Facebook that they’ve made about the film at the exact same place that you are watching. If your friends happen to be online, you can have kind of a real-time viewing party — but even if you are watching after your pal, you can still see what they think and leave them messages too.

You can pause the stream at any time if it is getting distracting and you can also go back and visit messages from your friends or the additional information provided by the app after you finish watching the movie. You can also find out behind the scenes information about the actors, crew members and soundtrack right from the app itself. Everything is self-contained inside the FoxPop app, meaning your movie window isn’t going to be obstructed.

Movies that Use FoxPop

The first big Fox release that utilizes FoxPop is the film “A Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian” which comes out on DVD and Blu-ray on December 1 (the same day as the iPhone app). Future releases include “Jennifer’s Body,” and “(500) Days of Summer.” You can also use the Spot411 player with existing films like “WALL-E,” “The Dark Knight,” “Coraline,” “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” and “Gran Turino.”

Each movie offers its own unique appearance to the FoxPop app — which just adds to the experience.

The new Flickr App Garden consists of mobile, desktop, and online widgets that interact with Flickr and help you get more out of the site. Flickr already had an extensive list of such apps in its “Services” area, but the new App Garden is considerably simpler and makes find cool Flickr apps much easier.

Unlike the former app directory, which was a simple list, Flickr’s App Garden gives each app its own page where users can leave comments, tag apps and mark them as favorites. The ability to favorite an app means users now have a way to promote their favorites in the App Garden showcase. The app pages also look and feel just like a Flickr photo pages, which makes App Garden feel more like a part of Flickr than the old services directory ever did.

To make it even easier to discover cool apps, Flickr has also included tags on user’s photos which tell you what app the image was uploaded with, and then link back to that app in the new App Garden. If you don’t want others to know how you upload your photos, you can turn off the new tags in your account settings.

The result is that you can stumble across some very cool stuff like Suggestify, an app that allows you to geotag other people’s photos by suggesting a location to the photo’s owner. Following the tag “geotag” then led us to an interesting iPhone app, FlickrUp, which lets you geotag photos uploaded from the iPhone.

So far there’s no way for developers to charge for applications through the Flickr App Garden, though there are some non-free apps listed. Since actually download the apps you want — whether free or not — requires at trip to the developer’s own page, it seems that, at least for now, the App Garden is more a place to browse, not buy apps.

My Milk Toof is an ongoing creative project by Californian artist Inhae Lee. In her blog, Inhae shares the adventures of two little polymer clay teeth, ickle and Lardee through a series of photographs. The execution is excellent, and the time and care she puts into creating each and every piece is reflected in the quality of her work. I’ve been following these stories for awhile now so I thought I’d share a couple with you today.

When I was young, I placed my baby teeth under my pillow and when i woke up I’d find a shiny new quarter. But whatever happened to those little teeth? Where did they go? Would I ever see them again? Many years later, a little tooth was standing at my door. It looked familiar. Its name was ickle. Welcome home, my milk toof!

Can social media sell cars? Ford Motors seems to think so.

Fresh off the Ford Fiesta Movement, the American car maker is announcing another social media initiative designed to once again combine the passionate voices of happy Ford owners with the distribution opportunities made available through social media channels.

Fusion 41, part of the Ford Drive One campaign, is a brand new challenge and campaign seeking 8 passionate 2010 Ford Fusion or Fusion Hybrid owners with an active social media presence.

Each of the 8 selected car owners will assemble a team of 4 friends and compete in a relay race that will be documented via social media sites like Facebook. Here’s the kicker: the Fusion owner on the winning team will have their vehicle paid off in full, while team members will win free gas for a year.

The elaborate initiative is one that Ford hopes will pay off handsomely on the web. Applicants must already be 2010 Ford Fusion owners and have a minimum of 100 Facebook friends, as well as an active photo gallery. Clearly, Ford isn’t messing around as challengers will be picked based on their perceived passion, meaning that the more vocal you’ve been about your Fusion on Twitter, YouTube, Facebook, and other social sites, the more ideal contestant you’ll make for their Fusion 41 challenge.

Once selected, teams will receive a 2010 Ford Fusion, with complimentary gas, that will be used for the duration of the relay race. The vehicle will be passed like a baton between team members over a 3 week period that will include challenges, each to be completed within 41 hours, and tracked and documented online.

Also, according to the Fusion 41 website:

“To keep you on track we’ll provide you with a set of nifty gadgets that help you log your stats, and you’ll prove your progress every step of the way by sharing pictures, status updates, and videos on the web. If your team racks up the best numbers, and has the pictures online to prove it, Ford will cover the remaining payments on your own newly purchased Fusion. And your team members? They’ll get free gas for an entire year.”

We find the campaign to be an incredibly creative combination of offline competition and online sharing, and one that will probably be a rewarding experience for participants regardless of whether or not they win the grand prize. Given the
new FTC regulations around sponsored conversations, we’re also interested to see how Ford and the participants will handle the disclosure requirements for each of their status updates during the relay race.

Google has announced a major update to its Maps service which adds detailed data from several U.S. government databases and improves the system for users to report errors and make corrections.

With this week’s update, Google Maps has added more detailed map information from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Forest Service, the U.S. Geological Survey and the Census Bureau to more accurately show map results in non-road areas, including parks, college campuses, hiking trails and bike routes.

Google Maps has also made it easier for its users to report problems, taking a step in the direction of crowdsourced projects like OpenStreetMap. Of course OpenStreetMap, which offers wiki-style, user-editable maps, is well ahead of Google when it comes to letting users to contribute roads, locations, routes, place-names and photos to maps. The new Google Maps feature stops short of allowing you to do the actual editing of street-level data. Rather, it simply gives you a channel through which you can report a problem, which is then edited by someone at Google.

To alert Google of an error or problem on a map, just right-click on the area in question and the drop-down menu will have a new option to “report a problem.” It’s not nearly as slick as OpenStreetMaps, which allows you to simply correct the problem right then and there, but Google does promise to resolve any reported issue within a month.

Far more useful than correcting Google’s mistakes is the additional data that’s been added to the maps, pulling in information on public parks, trails and paths. Even better, the Google Lat/Long blog says the new trails and paths data and the new cycling directions will eventually be added to Google Maps’ route planning features. Google Maps has also added building maps for many college campuses and now offers parcel maps in many U.S. cities.

It’s encouraging to see Google and the U.S. Government collaborating to make Google Maps more complete. But while the new features are incredibly useful in some context — finding all the bike paths in a nearby park, for example — the sheer amount of data being gathered into Google Maps verges on overwhelming.

In fact, that’s one of the primary reasons many developers are turning to solutions like OpenStreetMaps.

While Google’s new features are a welcome addition, the maps offered by Google lack much of the flexibility found in OpenStreetMaps. Unlike Google, which provides all its geographic data in a single layer, which is then displayed on the map, OpenStreetMaps allows you to pick and choose which layers are displayed in your maps. For example, if your map application needs to show trails, you can highlight that layer. If you’re just interested in streets, then you can omit the trail data.

The result is a cleaner, more customizable map that provides only the data that interests your users. The trade-off is a more complex interface, though projects like TileDrawer are helping to make OpenStreetMaps more accessible to developers.

Not only has Ford Motors faired the recession the best out of the big three auto makers, but they’ve been winning the buzz war on the social web as well. They have been seizing opportunities to generate buzz and connect with customers on Twitter and other social networks.

While Ford has had several initiatives, by far their most ambitious one has been the Ford Fiesta Movement, a grassroots social media campaign to promote the new Fiesta model by placing Fiestas in the hands of 100 social “agents” and having them promote Ford’s new vehicle through Twitter, blogs, video, and events, all without spending a dollar on traditional media.

It’s near the end of the six month campaign, so how has Ford’s experiment fared? Well, Ford shared some stats on the Fiesta campaign today, so we’ll let you decide. Here’s some of what they relayed to us:

- 4.3 million YouTube views thus far
- 500,000+ Flickr views
- 3 million+ Twitter impression
- 50,000 interested potential customers, 97% of which don’t own a Ford currently.

These are impressive numbers, although none are mind-blowing. A single viral video can alone gain over 4 million views, but those are incredibly rare. Having 8 million+ eyeballs see personalized advertising for the Fiesta is not shabby at all. All of these numbers clearly indicate interest.

The most important number though is Ford’s 50,000 “hand-raisers,” or individuals that have expressed in the Fiesta. The fate of this campaign rests on these people and whether they are willing to dish out a five digit sum to purchase a Fiesta. Ford’s Fiesta Movement has been impressive thus far – especially when you consider that it was all done with just 100 advocates nationwide – but in the end, Fiesta sales will tell us how powerful Ford’s social media mojo really is.

Veerle’s blog 3.0

It is hard to believe but I started the illustration work for the new *me* in the Summer of 2008. Now we are more than a year later and I finally have something that I am very pleased with. You can’t imagine how hard it is to combine client work, writing posts, tutorials and working on a next version of this blog. Many iterations have past the photoshop canvas before I got to a point that I really stand firmly behind.

One that didn’t make it

This is one iteration that didn’t make the cut.

Development

Currently I am at a point that almost all my templates have been coded. There is more to code because I have a few new things in the works. Personally I still feel there is a place for a blog that has *one* voice instead of multiple authors and posts that contains lists with 20 of this and 30 of that. We have enough of those! I hope that my new version will bring something new that will serve as a lighthouse in the sea of all the shouting. Most of those shout for attention and traffic and it is my goal to come out with something that is the opposite of that. Not sure if I’ll succeed but hey at least I’ll have tried

ExpresssionEngine

The next phase that I have to start is adding my templates to ExpressionEngine and making everything dynamic. Hopefully this will be smooth sailing and won’t take up too much time. Speaking of EE…

When?

That’s the million dollar question I’m hoping to get it ready before I go to Leiden, NL for EECI2009, the first ExpressionEngine and CodeIgniter Conference. Not sure if that will be doable. Anyway things will be slow here until I am done.
