Many designers and artists have a true love for vintage and retro design and share their passion when the opportunity arises. One could probably find several hundred showcases of retro designs on display today in the 21st century, but not many of actual vintage ones that were used in the 1940s, ’50s and ’60s and are still in use today.

To celebrate the beauty of vintage and retro typography, we have compiled a showcase of vintage and retro signage to inspire you: a great excuse to take five minutes out to admire the styles, whether simple or complex, and the love that went into creating these gorgeous vintage signs.

Remember how one of the most popular torrent sharing sites, The Pirate Bay, looked back in 2003? Today, you have a chance to refresh your memory, because the pirates have gone retro, changing the layout of the site to the way it looked back then, when the Internet was innocent and there was no pile of lawsuits on their desk.

Surprisingly enough, the site actually looks quite good; some might even argue that it’s easier to navigate than it is in its current iteration. There is one slight problem, though: the site is entirely in Swedish. The reason is explained on the Pirate Bay blog:

“In 2003 we started out as a tracker (on a tiny adsl connection in Mexico) mainly for Swedes. Today our servers operate in many countries and our users can be found wherever a tiny bit of internets can be found.”

The Pirate Bay folks aren’t content to merely look back with nostalgia, though; they’re planning exciting things for the next year.

“Enough with the old! Bring on the new! 2010 has no room for boring debates about old worn out values that old rotting industries try to shove down your throats. 2010 will be the year of the hydra. Let thousands of new exciting projects emerge!”

Yes, 2009 was definitely a year the Pirate Bay wants to forget. Hopefully, the next year will bring better things for them.

This retro Philco PC concept has us basking in a stew of our own biological lust. Designed by SchultzeWORKS design studio, this retro rig combines design elements of the 50′s classic Philco Pedictas television, antique typewriters, and just a hint of steampunk. Granted, it doesn’t have the clean, minimalistic form of modern designs that appeal to the mass market. But really, isn’t that point? (via Engadget)

The Emperor 1510, The Ultimate Workstation for the Ubber Geek

The Emperor 1510 seems to cost slightly more than $4k, or one tenth of the price with pretty much all the same functionality. Some things that appeared to be standard are now options (or or three screens? Colors? 2.1 or 5.1 sound?). But really, if you’re an office manager looking for the baddest work environment ever, the Emperor 1510 doesn’t get much better. Word is, the Prince of Dubai just ordered 10 of these bad boys. Antique and Pre-20th Century Inspired Designs

The most common eras antique-inspired websites take design cues from seem to be the Victorian era and classical Rome and Greece. How to use retro colors in your designs using Photoshop

Now that we’ve seen some examples of websites with retro colors, we are going to look at a few ways to create them in Adobe Photoshop.

Use the Color Picker to reduce saturation

Click on the Foreground color in your Tools Panel; this will open up the Color Picker Dialog box. Start with a red color (#FF0000). Now, click directly to the left of the red color you’ve chosen. The more you go towards the left, the more reduced the saturation is.

Drop the layer’s Opacity to reduce saturation

If you drop down your opacity in the Layers Panel, this will also drop down your saturation. The bad (or good) thing about this is that if there is anything behind it, it will show through.

Photo Filter Image Adjustment

In order to reduce saturation by way of the Photo Filter Image Adjustment, we have to first get the inverse of our color; to do this, press Ctrl + I (which is the shortcut keystroke for Image > Adjustments > Invert).

Next, choose the Eyedropper Tool in the Tools Panel and click on the inverted color in your canvas to sample it and set it as your Foreground color. Once you have set your color, press Ctrl + I again to revert back to the original color. Now, go to Image > Adjustments > Photo Filter. Finally, change the color to our inverted color.

Hue/Saturation Image Adjustment

With this method, we want to go into the Hue/Saturation dialog box by pressing Ctrl + U or going to Image > Adjustments > Hue/Saturation. To lessen the saturation, drag the Saturation option slider to the left. This is probably the easiest and best way to get your saturation reduced for an entire image.

Using Textures

Using a texture is also a good way to give your website a retro/vintage look and feel. Not only does it change the color, but it also gives you a nice, uneven and worn look.

There are a few ways to change your colors with a texture, and here’s one way to do it.

First, we are going to grab a texture from Zen Textures.

Open up the texture in Photoshop and place it on top of the red square. Then change its layer’s blend mode to Screen.

Now to make our image less of a peach-colored, drop down the opacity to somewhere around 50%.

The task of writing this book was quite daunting. The book was to be about 160 pages and I had to do just about all of it myself. That means that I wrote the text, designed the cover art, created most of the content, and laid out all 160 pages. In all, the book took me about 6-7 months to complete, and another 4-5 months of editing and waiting.

I did have a lot of help along the way. There were several designers, studios, and font foundries who contributed content. Without them, this book would not be possible and I truly owe a debt of thanks to everyone who lent a hand.

Retro Style Graphics is a collection of design elements inspired by the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. Retro horror movies posters are pretty sweet, and designing them requires much more than just checking references and all that. The best reference to make a killer horror movie poster is to actually watch some old B horror movies!

I know that Halloween is gone, but we don’t need an excuse to design and watch cool trailers, right? So here I made a selection of some really trashy, retro B horror movies trailers for your delight. I really hope you get the purpose of this: inspire the hell out of you. I hope you can still have a good night of sleep by the end of this post. Cheers! ;p

Almost all of the movie concepts here made me laugh out loud, but I’m sure that you can appreciate the designs, even if you don’t want to go and see ‘Killer Klowns From Outer Space’! .

I’ve also noticed a few techniques employed in creating these posters, which I’ll list here, but may integrate into an upcoming tutorial!

Strong Lighting/Shadows – This technique is used in almost all retro movie posters, particularly for horror movies. Shadows are very intense, with a very high contrast between the highlights and shadows. The illustrations are often bold and high contrast.

Slanted or Irregular Text – Slanting text often implies something being abnormal, interesting or ‘off’ in some way. This is perfect for capturing the atmosphere of horror films. Similarly irregular text can be used for similar effect.

Busy Compositions – Horror movie posters can sometimes be simple and effective. However, particularly more retro horror movie posters often combine multiple elements, headlines and taglines to create a very ‘full’, complex feeling. This fits with the uneasy nature of the films, and almost overwhelms viewers.

I grew up with shows like the Transformers, Thundercats and He-man – cartoons the likes of which many complain aren’t made anymore today. I remember the gratifying frustration of playing games like Zelda, Metroid and Mega Man in a time when strategy guides didn’t exist.

As a result of growing up in the 80s I get all warm and fuzzy inside every time I see neon color schemes, over the top shiny metallic typography and Tron inspired grid backdrops. At first I thought I was the only one with this absurd fetish but lately the web has me believing otherwise. Designers, illustrators and everyone in between seem to be picking up the 80s as a new trend for the coming years. So I did what I do best on Designfeedr, I scoured the interwebs and my hard drive for the hottest retro pieces the web has to offer.

Alex Trochut & Marta Cerda Alimbau

Barcelona based Marta Cerda Alimbau teamed up with Australia’s Alex Trochet to create these deliciously retro typography illustrations. I hear the illustrations were rejected by the client…what a shame.

When one speaks of retro art, images of art styles derived from advertising and propaganda posters from 1930s to 1960s usually flood the mind. The simple graphics made from oil paints reflect the less advanced technology of that time. This period is also a time of significant turbulence in our modern history, when major events such as the rise of communism and World Wars were taking ground. It is then not surprising that many posters serve as propaganda tools for the ruling governments. These propaganda images eventually contributed to the development of different retro art styles.

Many of the following retro art pieces that you will see are actual posters produced during those time. We’ve searched a couple of sources to compile a great list of retro art styles comprising not only of propaganda art pieces, but also a few other kind such as advertising posters. In addition, we have separated these pieces into two main categories, Western and Chinese retro art. Full list after jump.

Retro Design has been a popular style for quite some time now, and the trend will likely continue in the future.
