18 Jan 2010Hello everyone! Today, I’ve got some pretty big news to report. My book Retro Style Graphics is now available on iTunes for just $2.99 as an iPhone app! As you know, a couple months ago Retro Style Graphics was released in print and is currently available on Amazon.com, Barnes and Noble, and just about all other major book stores. Sales are going well but we decided to develop an iPhone app to give those of you with a thirst for instant gratification a new way to purchase the book and gain instant access to all the items contained on the book’s CD. Here’s a little bit of color for you. The gang at Retro Thing have brought our attention to a republished 1983 Stereophile review of the Sony CDP-101, the first-ever CD player. The results were that the audio quality was promising but not stellar, and the $1,000 (!) cost of entry for the device made it even less alluring. Knowing how history unfolded, we can’t help but chuckle a bit at the worry that CDs would in the near-term become obsolete by another physical disc medium, but hey, we can’t blame them for not being psychic. Just think, one day our own reviews will be discovered for the future to laugh about — paying over $500 for a device that doesn’t do multitouch on its native apps? What’s up with that? Find yourself 15 to 30 minutes of quiet time and hit up the source link for a blast from the past.

Many designers and artists have a true love for vintage and retro design and share their passion when the opportunity arises. One could probably find several hundred showcases of retro designs on display today in the 21st century, but not many of actual vintage ones that were used in the 1940s, ’50s and ’60s and are still in use today.
To celebrate the beauty of vintage and retro typography, we have compiled a showcase of vintage and retro signage to inspire you: a great excuse to take five minutes out to admire the styles, whether simple or complex, and the love that went into creating these gorgeous vintage signs.
