Since Apple opened up the iPhone for developers to build applications on there have been hundreds of thousands built. They have opened up a whole new market for designers and developers to tap into. 10. Hang onions and garlic with pantyhose

Culinary stores sell fancy baskets and all kinds of other ideas for keeping onions, garlic, and similar staples dry and separated. Kind of ridiculous, considering you’re probably not looking to put them on display. Knot up an old pair of pantyhose and use them to hang onions and garlic vertically, while allowing the restricted air flow to preserve your aromatic items longer than an air-tight model. 9. Make perfect pancakes with a ketchup bottle

Pancakes are fun. Cleaning up after them is not. Lo and behold, the progression of ketchup and other plastic squeeze bottles into EZ-pour, high-volume dispensers makes them perfect for conversion into pancake batter dispensers (discovered via the Crafter-Holic blog). The price is right (free, if you buy ketchup), and the cleanup is as simple as shaking a bottle full of soapy water, or recycling the bottle if you don’t plan on future precise pancake pour projects. 8. Steam scrambled eggs with an espresso machine

Next time you want to impress your guests with unbelievably fluffy eggs, skip the part where you watch the pan like a hawk on Ritalin. Beat together eggs, butter, and salt in a firm jar, then hold that jar underneath the steamer wand on an espresso machine. Turn the steamer on, then swirl until your eggs are soft but runny. Instant success, and your secret makes for a good morning tale. (Original post)

7. Trap fruit flies with a soda bottle

How-to site eHow explains how to cut a 2 L soda bottle into a fruit fly trap, one that lures the buggers in with sticky-sweet juice and keeps them trapped with, well, gravity and plastic design and such. It’s the fruit fly motel—they check in, but they can’t possibly find their way out. (Original post).

6. Clean a dishwasher with lemonade drink mix

It kind of makes one concerned about the thought of actually drinking something like Kool-Aid lemonade, but the citric acid in one drink packet is enough to clean the lime stains and calcium deposits that build up over time in the dishwasher. Give it a try—you’ll be surprised how well it breaks through the walls of grime (sorry, couldn’t help ourselves). (Original post)

5. Manage pot lids with vertical files & curtain rods

It’s odd that vertical lid and sheet storage is only a recent concept in kitchen design—haven’t lids been around for quite some time? Regardless of your kitchen’s age, you can upgrade its storage efficiency by creating vertical-oriented storage with very cheap tools. A vertical file holder can get the job done if it fits. If it doesn’t, squeeze some spring tension curtain rods into a tall cabinet and stash your cookie sheets, outsized lids, and other hard-to-stash items in there. 4. Cook pizza in a cast iron skillet

A well-seasoned skillet is a beautiful tool to behold, and it’s good for more than just scrambles and stir-fries. The Not Martha blog details how it can be used to cook a small pizza—the perfect size for when it’s just you and another eater, and a large pizza from the corner spot sounds like a bit of overkill. Plus, this one’s bound to be fresher, since you’re the one who pulls it off the heat when you’re good and ready to eat. (Original post)

3. Make a universal knife block with bamboo skewers

Bamboo skewers—from the dollar store or elsewhere—come pretty cheap. If you’ve got a long container, or can make one yourself, you’ve got a knife block that can fit nearly any knife you’ve got, no matter which brand or style. (Original post)

2. Roast coffee with a popcorn popper

Most of us have never truly experienced “fresh-roasted coffee.” And that’s a shame, since there are hundreds of thousands of unused popcorn poppers waiting to be converted into DIY coffee roasters. The Coffee Geek site has an excellent step-by-step picture walkthrough. It’s not as gourmet or controlled as, say, using a heat gun, but it is a lot more simple, and easy to work into a weekend routine of having the freshest coffee you can get available within 10 minutes. 1. Do everything with your waffle iron

It’s a wonder they’re so prevalent in attics, basements, and garage sales, given that a waffle iron can be one of the most versatile tools in your kitchen. Given that it’s basically a heated, pressure-added mini grill, it can be put to all kinds of uses: making 90-second cookies, rolling your own waffle-style pizza pockets, and, our personal Sunday morning favorite, making bacon with far less mess than usual. “But,” you say, “I need even more waffle iron ingenuity!” We advise you run through the Waffleizer, a site dedicated to feeding your square-pocketed hunger. Or, another choice is to publish it as a ’static page’…a page that stands on its own…meaning it is literally a separate page with a separate address from your homepage. Your readers access these pages by clicking on a link that you have provided on your blog.

Most often you will find these navigation links listed in the sidebar, on the top near the header and sometimes even at the bottom of the blog page. (Make sure these pages open in a ‘new window’ so that your customer can easily navigate back to the home page…you don’t want to loose them.)

An example of some ’static’ pages that should or can be included on your blog are:

1) About Page: This is probably the most common page used among bloggers and the first place I head to after I’ve read a post I like on a particular blog. Use your ‘About Me’ page to allow your reader get a more personal view of you. This page gives your new readers a glimpse or snapshot of the person behind the posts. You can and should include a picture of yourself. Additionally, you can explain a bit of why they should subscribe to your blog on this page.

2) Contact Page: Many times your readers will have questions after reading through one of your posts…or maybe something captured their interest and they would like to partner with you on a project. Whatever the reason, you should have a page dedicated to contacting you. Without this page, you will never know how many opportunities you may have missed with your readers and potential partners. Someone may even have been impressed enough to want to advertise with you. Make it easy for them to locate this important page…don’t test their patience by making it difficult to locate…they may walk.

3) Disclaimer Page: With the new FTC rulings about bloggers that came out late 2009, it is imperative that you inform your readers what you ‘get out of your blog.’ If you make money from your blog through affiliate associations or ads, you must inform your readers of this fact or risk big trouble from the FTC. You can balance this revelation by explaining to them some of the costs associated with your blog.

4) Service Related Pages: Any kind of services that you may offer your blog readers such as coaching or consultation services should be given their own page. Your readers will be more likely to buy your services from a dedicated page that you have set up than a flash in the pan mention in one of your posts.

5) Best of Page: Also referred to as a ’sneeze page’…not squeeze page! All your most favorite or most popular blog posts can be included on this page. Use this page to highlight anything about your blog that you want front and center or you know your readers will enjoy because of its previous popularity.

6) 404 Page: Most bloggers are aware of their 404 Error page. This error page is what someone sees when they navigate to a broken or deleted link or a link that is not working for some reason. What most bloggers are not aware of is the fact that they can customize this page to their advantage so that readers are directed to what they are looking for. Additionally, it provides the reader with something else to keep their interest. A blank 404 Page is a wasted opportunity.

7) Unique Projects: Should you participate in any kind of event…charity or otherwise, it is always a good idea to create page dedicated to this particular event. This gives the event much more importance and allows those with interest a place to follow up on any dates or updates that they need be aware of.

Testimonial Page: Selling an item or even selling yourself can be much more impressive if you include testimonials from others that have used the product or service and can provide their details. Once again, there are new strict rules concerning using testimonials so make sure you understand the new FTC rulings before placing any on your blog.

Although there are many more choices for pages in your blog, the choices listed above should be included in most blogs. Beyond those, there are no hard core rules on what pages to set up as each individual blog offers something different. You are only limited by your imagination.

Once you have settled on a blogging subject, visit other blogs with similar interests/topics as yours and check out their pages and how they have set up their blog. Great way to get ideas for your own.

Blogging is a platform that is growing by leaps and bounds. It is here to stay. The more you understand what elements are important to your blog the quicker and easier it will be to be successful at blogging.

According to Mashable, Facebook rolled out the new feature called “Via” yesterday. It lets you repost a friend’s shared items with attribution. The Mashable post explains how it works:

“To try it, just go to a friend’s posted item in your news feed, click “share” and you’ll see a “via [your friend’s name]” (with an option to remove it). Once shared, the item will appear on your profile, with a via link that points to your friend’s profile. Your friends will also see the item in their News Feeds, creating the viral loop that is the Twitter (Twitter) retweet.”

The feature is only active for posted links and not other items such as status updates or photos. Also, you’ll only see the *share* link on newsfeed items that are posted for public view (i.e. based on the privacy settings set by the Facebook friend who you are quoting).

The new feature is now live for all Facebook users.

The Ad Council has launched a series of Public Service Announcements promoting the slogan “Think before you post.” One depicts a teenage girl who keeps getting creepy comments from people who seem to know intimate things about her. The football coach compliments her on her new tattoo. The ticket collector at the movie theater asks what color underwear she’s wearing today. Then we hear a voice saying “anything you post online, anyone can see.” Another video shows a girl posting a picture on a bulletin board that instantly reappears after someone takes it down, allowing everyone at the school– even the janitor– to get a copy. The message: once you post something online, “you can’t take it back-anyone can see it.”

The Family Violence Prevention Fund has launched ThatsNotCool.com, a site aimed at making teens aware of “textual harassment” has a series of videos featuring sock puppets, dolls and fruits talking about situations where their boyfriend or girlfriend’s texts seem controlling, and where they are feeling pressure to send nude pictures.

The site also has a set of “callout cards,” colorful icons people can share digitally that have anti-sexting messages. One card features mints and the phrase: “When you pressure me for nude pics, I throw up in my mouth a little.” Another says: “Congrats, with that last text you’ve achieved stalker status.”

Common Sense Media, a nonprofit that helps parents and educators become aware of media and entertainment issues, offers parents tips for discussing the topic with teens.

And Lake Superior State University suggested added sexting to a list of words that is believes should be “banned.”
It’s not clear what effect the ads are having but a December report by Pew Research Center looked at other methods for getting teens to avoid the practice. It found that parental restriction on the number of text messages teens could send was likely to lower the chances of their teens sexting. Teens whose parents checked their phones were no less likely to sext than those with less supervision.
The study also found 4% of cell-owning teens ages 12-17 say they have sent sexually suggestive nude or nearly nude pictures of themselves via text messaging. And 15% of teens say they have received them.

In a lengthy blog post today, Google announced that it would no longer censor its Chinese search engine, even if it means pulling out of China entirely. This comes in the wake of a wide-ranging attack on its infrastructure targeting Chinese human rights activists.

In the post, Google outlined in rather striking detail a “highly sophisticated and targeted attack” that occurred last month, targeting around 20 companies. In its investigation, the search giant found that the attackers’ primary objective was accessing Gmail accounts of Chinese human rights activists. It also found that dozens of other Gmail accounts owned by human rights activists worldwide were compromised, most likely due to phishing scams or malware.

Google wouldn’t say it, but implications are that the Chinese government had something to do with these attacks.

As a result of the attacks, Google has decided to reassess its presence in China. The Chinese government and Google have fought over censorship before, but currently the search engine does block certain results (such as images of the Tiananmen Square massacre).

Now Google’s making it clear that it won’t comply with China’s demands any longer. Here’s the key paragraph from the Google post:

“These attacks and the surveillance they have uncovered–combined with the attempts over the past year to further limit free speech on the web–have led us to conclude that we should review the feasibility of our business operations in China. We have decided we are no longer willing to continue censoring our results on Google.cn, and so over the next few weeks we will be discussing with the Chinese government the basis on which we could operate an unfiltered search engine within the law, if at all. We recognize that this may well mean having to shut down Google.cn, and potentially our offices in China.”

Google has taken a very public stand against censorship, albeit one that is years overdue. How this series of events plays out could not only affect Google and the tech community, but global politics as a whole.

Facebook has just rolled out the ability for users to reply to comments through e-mail, a feature it began testing last month.

The feature is straightforward. Anytime you get a notification e-mail about a comment on a status update, a photo or a wall post, you can simply reply via e-mail and the post will show up on Facebook. The social network is able to filter out unrelated text like your e-mail signature.

As we noted in our previous coverage, this move is about more than meets the eye. While it’s a useful feature, it also means Facebook is sacrificing short-term pageviews (by forcing you to log in) for more user interaction.

The same can’t yet be said for Facebook’s mail system, which isn’t getting the reply-by-e-mail functionality with this update.

A blog post from Mozilla’s Mike Connor, one of the company’s key browser developers, made waves Saturday and Sunday in the Firefox world for suggesting that scenario. While Connor didn’t explicitly say it would happen, his words led many readers to assume the company was considering abandoning the current Firefox add-on ecosystem in favor of JetPack-based add-ons

We asked Mozilla about this possibility and the representative we spoke to insists it’s certainly not the case. Connor’s post has been updated and much of the hubbub has settled down, but the post did spark an important discussion about browser add-ons and the relationships users have with them.

Connor’s post outlined a few lines of thought that have been going on behind the scenes among Firefox developers, as they have been strategizing about the browser’s future.

Exactly what Connor intended to say is still a little unclear. The initial post used phrases like “deprecating the old systems” and suggested that Mozilla would be “discriminating against the old systems” — that is, the current Firefox add-on ecosystem we all know and love — as it moves forward with its software releases.It certainly sounded like somebody at Mozilla was talking about killing off add-ons as we know them and replacing them with the still-beta JetPack add-on system and the Personas theming system. JetPack is Mozilla’s platform for creating simple add-ons that manipulate web page elements and UI elements within the browser’s skin, much like Greasemonkey scripts or the type of DOM-futzing that Chrome’s extension system allows. Personas, Mozilla’s theme manager, allows users to alter the look of the browser by installing a visual theme with one click.

Once a rather vocal community began reacting to the post (read the comments) Conner added an update that backpedaled a bit, but still concluded that, while the plan might be not be “set in stone,” Mozilla does intend to move in that direction. When he said that Mozilla was “discriminating against the old systems,” and added “I am personally at peace with that,” Conner was essentially throwing down the geek gauntlet, whether he meant to or not.

To understand why those statements caused an uproar, you must first understand that, as it stands, JetPack is full-fledged Firefox add-ons what Mini Me is to Dr. Evil — a cute but much less powerful sidekick.

JetPack makes it simple to build simple things, but in its current incarnation it could hardly produce a NoScript, an AdBlock Plus or any of the other popular, powerful Firefox extensions.

Presumably, long before Mozilla makes an attempt to officially migrate from the current system to the JetPack system, the company isn’t likely to turn its back on the over 5,000 add-ons currently shipping for Firefox.

But Conner’s post had an element of immediacy to it and that quickly brought out the die-hard Firefox add-on fans writing “over my dead body” and threatening to abandon Firefox in favor of Google Chrome (ironically, when we recently critiqued Chrome’s current add-on plan, we did so because it fails to offer developers exactly the tools that Conner is suggesting Mozilla might eventually take away).

Why would Mozilla want to limit developers? Well, the truth is that’s not at all what JetPack is aiming to do.

In fact, the JetPack program is an attempt to make developers’ lives easier. JetPack offers niceties like stable APIs (so new versions of Firefox won’t break all your add-ons), automatic updates, sandboxed add-ons for a more secure browser and process isolation so add-ons won’t crash Firefox.

But of course simplicity comes with a price, and this is where Conner runs afoul of the nerds.

To many, the power of Firefox is precisely in its infinite extensibility. Does infinite power bring infinite possibilities for problems? Yes, but the tradeoff is worth it, so say Firefox’s die-hard add-on users.

It’s precisely the fact that users can do whatever they want within the browser that has elevated Firefox to where it is today. Outside developers have been able to push the envelope the web browser’s capabilities, extending it to do things that even the founders of Mozilla would likely never have imagined.

The real issue might simply be whether or not Mozilla recognizes this. Writing about the reasons why Mozilla wants to eventually switch to JetPack-based add-ons Conner talks about updates and problems with add-ons. “We already know from our users,” he writes, “that incompatible add-ons are a significant factor in opting out of updates.”

The message here is not that the add-on system needs to be changed so that people will have a cleaner upgrade path for their browser, but that the browser is irrelevant and the add-ons are what matter.

Firefox, Chrome and Safari routinely swap the top spot in speed tests, and the browsers match each other pretty closely in feature breakdowns, including Firefox’s once-unique core strength — support for the latest web standards.

But there is one huge difference that sets Firefox apart — the ability to infinitely extend it through add-ons. Take away the full power of add-ons and Firefox is just another browser. It might be easier to keep up-to-date since you wouldn’t have to worry about compatibility, but there wouldn’t be anything too special about it, functionality wise.

However, despite some perhaps poor wording in Conner’s post, Mozilla is not about to abandon traditional add-ons. Will many developers chose to port their add-ons to the JetPack system? We hope so. It makes it much easier to develop and maintain simple add-ons. But for the more powerful add-ons, Mozilla will likely leave existing frameworks in place for some time.

The graph below shows the average load time for this website. I had a high of about 12 seconds and low of about 5 seconds. Using the techniques below I was able to bring my page load time down under 5 seconds.

• First, remove any social media buttons that have active counts. Using add-ons like the “smart digg button” makes a call to another website and will increase the page’s load time. The more buttons, the longer the site will take to load, so go with static buttons for things like sphinn, stumbleupon, twitter, digg, facebook, and so on. In some cases this may work against you as it will get you less “votes.” If you depend on social media interaction for traffic, consider using a date based hook. Show buttons with the count when the post is new, then switch to static buttons or remove them entirely when the post is old.
• Two of the biggest offenders which deserve special mention are share this and tweetmeme. They make a disproportionately large number of connections for what they are doing. Worse, they throw a huge amount of validation errors. True you don’t need to be valid to rank but for a plugin to throw 40 validation errors is embarrassing and quite simply shows nothing less than gross incompetence from a programmer or team who should be fired on the spot. Those two plugins should be first two to go if you are concerned about speed.
• Look at your sidebar for any social widgets, plugins or javascript-based add-ons. Decide if  they are helping you bring in any traffic. Things like Google Friend Connect are almost never worth it and should be removed.
• Are you using plugins like shadowbox to give you a nice effect when people zoom in on a picture? Seriously consider whether it’s worth it: chances are good that the plugin and ones like it are having some detrimental effects on load time.
• Are you using any dynamic, on-the-fly image resizing, or are you cheating and using hard coded width and height settings for your images? If you are, chances are good that you’re affecting load time. Create a smaller image and link to the larger one. Starting with wordpress 2.9 there is a built in image editing feature. Take advantage of it.
• If you are using comments, set the default avatar to “blank.” It will show images for people who have registered but won’t show anything for people without avatars. if you have posts that get over 25 comments, the savings can be significant.
• Do a plugin audit. Use a page load monitoring tool to turn plugins on and off one by one to see if anything is adversely affecting load time. Some plugins like Page to Post converter don’t need to be enabled 100% of the time. Turn them on when you need them, turn them off when you don’t.
• WordPress used to have a GZip setting built in.  It was removed in version 2.5.  Add it back in if it’s compatible with your hosting plan because it’s worth doing.
• Caching is a tricky thing with wordpress. If you are playing the social game you want it running and everything set to lockdown. If you publish frequently you need to clear the cache to make sure everyone is getting new content. 99% of the posts I do here are scheduled, and I’m not convinced the setting “clear cache on post publication” works 100% of the time with scheduled posts. So use WP-Cache–just get in the habit of manually clearing it out every now and then(at least once a week at bare minimum).
• Install WP Minify. It reduces and combines the javascripts and CSS files. This one can be a bit tricky to get installed and sometimes has conflicts. It’s definitely worth trying though.

To conclude, what you want to do is look for scripts, add-ons, plugins,  javascripts, or social media tools with large load times or callbacks to external websites. Remove them whenever possible. Use basic file reduction techniques like using thumbnails instead of large images. Install compression and caching scripts to maximize the value from your first two steps. By themselves, none of these steps will have that much effect; however their cumulative effect will add up. In the case of this site, they reduced load time in half.

To be clear, at the time of this post’s publication, there is no evidence that page load time is currently affecting organic rankings. However, it is a part of the quality score in Adwords. When taking into consideration Google’s statement that load time will become a factor in the future, this presents an opportunity for you to take proactive steps now instead of playing catch up 6 months from now.

Well, a new year is upon us, it’s also the start of a new decade within the blogosphere. More and more people are building blogs, and that means there are lots of blogs competing for the same eyeballs and your blog is just one of many. Try finding accurate figures on how many blogs there are and you will know it’s impossible to find a verifiable number because bloggers and their blogs come and go. Look around. It’s certainly a disheartened moment when you see blogs with quality articles that have been abandoned by their creators.

With all of these blogs out there, and all those information available at no cost, how do you make your blog stand out? No problem, just follow these tips and your blog will blossom in this new era when you stay ahead of the rest of your competitors.

1. Target your content to a specific readership

Unless you want to throw all of your marketing budget and precious time on people who could care less about your blog, then you must pay attention to determine the preferred audiences to whom you would like to target. Before posting any piece, determine if it hits the sweet spot of your demographic.

2. Be original, be honest

Don’t follow the herd within your sphere of interest. Followers aren’t innovators and innovation keeps readers reading. So, don’t simply spin the same old post. Take an original slant on a common topic.

Be honest. Verify your facts and provide links to additional verification. Readers trust you to be a good reporter, instructor, mentor or inspiration so keep it honest at all times.

3. Don’t be afraid of a little controversy.

Controversy sells. You and I know that. If it is a part of your business model, be prepared to engage others with differing opinions because, guaranteed, lots of readers will disagree, and you may even encounter a few trolls and haters who frequent blogs for no other purpose than to post inflammatory garbage.

4. Post as a guest blogger

Don’t post to just any blog within your realm. Submit your best pieces to the prestigious blogs – the ones that already have a substantial following. For example, Hongkiat.com is considered by industry insiders to be one of the best blogs for designers, marketers and freelancers. Getting one of your posts published on a top of the line blog is a great way to drive traffic to your blog where readers can find tons of content – all your archives – just waiting for a bookmark.

Of course, getting published on a well-established blog requires insight and something new to be added to the discussion. A rehash of conventional wisdom, regardless of the field of endeavor, won’t make the cut with top tier blogs within any industry or area of interest.

5. Simplify subscriptions

Don’t hide your RSS button down the page together with your WordPress theme credit links, make them visible & clear for your reader’s eyeballs by taking the following approaches:

• Add an RSS chicklet at the top of your sidebar so visitors can easily load your posts into their RSS readers.
• Offer email subscriptions.
• Provide links to mobi feeds so readers can access new content from their cells or iPhones.
• Provide one click subscriptions using reader links to PageFlakes, Google Reader and other remote site readers. You can build a big following fast if you make it easy to find your blog again. And again, and again.

6. Social Media Marketing

The expansion of social media and the evolution of multi-generational media apps are only going to pick up steam. Social media sites have taken off, providing bloggers with an arsenal of tools based on the guerrilla-marketing axiom: Use the resources of others to your advantage.

A few years back, Twitter didn’t exist. Today, not only is it ubiquitous, it spawned a whole new level of web innovation and interactivity.

Follow the rules & open accounts at Facebook, LinkedIn & Twitter. Every time you make a new post to your blog, let your readers know about it by posting to these popular sites. Update your status with interesting & latest news that fascinates your readers.

7. Create different profiles for each social media site

On LinkedIn, you want to be all about business. On Facebook, show a little of your personality – the carbon-based life form behind the blog. On Twitter, shine the spotlight on your blog. Each profile should be designed to show a different facet of you and your expertise.

8. Don’t oversell. Teach, too

If you post to social media sites all day long, flogging your latest blog post, it won’t be long before your Facebook friends hit the hide button next to your name. It can’t be all selling and no sizzle. Instead, post information on a new blog piece, but also post news from other sites that you think will benefit your readers. Know when to stop pushing for a larger readership and when to start giving away information to drive more readers to your blog.

9. Long tail keywords get you found

If you maintain a book review blog, a broad keyword like books will keep you buried in the backwash of Google’s SERPs. Instead, narrow the focus of a search engine search through the use of terms and phrases, broadly referred to as long tail keywords.

So, instead of using “books” as a primary keyword, use a long-tail keyword like “independent book reviews” or “book reviews of current bestsellers.” Sure, not as many people will use these long tails when conducting a search but those who do will discover your blog at the top of page 1. And that’s just where you want to be.

10. Optimize your blog – Both for readers & bots

Cut the clutter of 23 affiliate banners, animated adverts and other distractions. Remember, your site should be attractive to human sensibilities.

Indeed, it’s important to look good to readers who follow you. It’s just as important to look good to search engine spiders. Conduct keyword research using tools like Google’s keyword generator that provides keywords used by actual Google users over the past 30 days. Place those keywords in headlines, sub heads and a few of them in your blog posts.

The pace of innovation is only going to increase in this new decade so, if you’re standing still you’re losing ground to competitor bloggers. Stay current, use all the new tools and follow all the new rules.

Your blog space is your real estate. It has value. Make the most of it.

Why cURL?

It’s true that there are other ways of fetching the contents of a web page. Many times, mostly due to laziness, I have just used simple PHP functions instead of cURL:

readfile("http://www.nettuts.com");

However they have virtually no flexibility and lack sufficient error handling. Also, there are certain tasks that you simply can not do, like dealing with cookies, authentication, form posts, file uploads etc.

cURL is a powerful library that supports many different protocols, options, and provides detailed information about the URL requests.

Basic Structure

Before we move on to more complicated examples, let’s review the basic structure of a cURL request in PHP. There are four main steps:

1. Initialize
2. Set Options
3. Execute and Fetch Result
4. Free up the cURL handle

Step #2 (i.e. curl_setopt() calls) is going to be a big part of this article, because that is where all the magic happens. There is a long list of cURL options that can be set, which can configure the URL request in detail. It might be difficult to go through the whole list and digest it all at once. So today, we are just going to use some of the more common and useful options in various code examples.

Checking for Errors

Optionally, you can also add error checking:

Please note that we need to use “=== FALSE” for comparison instead of “== FALSE”. Because we need to distinguish between empty output vs. the boolean value FALSE, which indicates an error.

Another optional step is to get information about the cURL request, after it has been executed.

Detect Redirection Based on Browser

In this first example, we will write a script that can detect URL redirections based on different browser settings. For example, some websites redirect cellphone browsers, or even surfers from different countries.

We are going to be using the CURLOPT_HTTPHEADER option to set our outgoing HTTP Headers including the user agent string and the accepted languages. Finally we will check to see if these websites are trying to redirect us to different URLs.

First we have a set of URLs to test, followed by a set of browser settings to test each of these URLs against. Then we loop through these test cases and make a cURL request for each.

Because of the way setup the cURL options, the returned output will only contain the HTTP headers (saved in $output). With a simple regex, we can see if there was a “Location:” header included.

When you run this script, you should get an output like this:

POSTing to a URL

On a GET request, data can be sent to a URL via the “query string”. For example, when you do a search on Google, the search term is located in the query string part of the URL:

http://www.google.com/search?q=nettuts

You may not need cURL to simulate this in a web script. You can just be lazy and hit that url with “file_get_contents()” to receive the results.

But some HTML forms are set to the POST method. When these forms are submitted through the browser, the data is sent via the HTTP Request body, rather than the query string. For example, if you do a search on the CodeIgniter forums, you will be POSTing your search query to:

We can write a PHP script to simulate this kind of URL request. First let’s create a simple file for accepting and displaying the POST data. Let’s call it post_output.php:

It sent a POST to the post_output.php script, which dumped the $_POST variable, and we captured that output via cURL.

File Upload

Uploading files works very similarly to the previous POST example, since all file upload forms have the POST method.

First let’s create a file for receiving the request and call it upload_output.php:

When you want to upload a file, all you have to do is pass its file path just like a post variable, and put the @ symbol in front of it. Now when you run this script you should get an output like this:

Multi cURL

One of the more advanced features of cURL is the ability to create a “multi” cURL handle. This allows you to open connections to multiple URLs simultaneously and asynchronously.

On a regular cURL request, the script execution stops and waits for the URL request to finish before it can continue. If you intend to hit multiple URLs, this can take a long time, as you can only request one URL at a time. We can overcome this limitation by using the multi handle.

Let’s look at this sample code from php.net:

The idea is that you can open multiple cURL handles and assign them to a single multi handle. Then you can wait for them to finish executing while in a loop.

There are two main loops in this example. The first do-while loop repeatedly calls curl_multi_exec(). This function is non-blocking. It executes as little as possible and returns a status value. As long as the returned value is the constant ‘CURLM_CALL_MULTI_PERFORM’, it means that there is still more immediate work to do (for example, sending http headers to the URLs.) That’s why we keep calling it until the return value is something else.

In the following while loop, we continue as long as the $active variable is ‘true’. This was passed as the second argument to the curl_multi_exec() call. It is set to ‘true’ as long as there are active connections withing the multi handle. Next thing we do is to call curl_multi_select(). This function is ‘blocking’ until there is any connection activity, such as receiving a response. When that happens, we go into yet another do-while loop to continue executing.

Let’s see if we can create a working example ourselves, that has a practical purpose.

WordPress Link Checker

Imagine a blog with many posts containing links to external websites. Some of these links might end up dead after a while for various reasons. Maybe the page is longer there, or the entire website is gone.

We are going to be building a script that analyzes all the links and finds non-loading websites and 404 pages and returns a report to us.

Note that this is not going to be an actual WordPress plug-in. It is only a standalone utility script, and it is just for demonstration purposes.

So let’s get started. First we need to fetch the links from the database:

First we have some database configuration, followed by an array of domain names we will ignore ($excluded_domains). Also we set a number for maximum simultaneous connections we will be using later ($max_connections). Then we connect to the database, fetch posts that contain links, and collect them into an array ($url_list).

Following code might be a little complex, so I will try to explain it in small steps.

And here is the explanation for the code above. Numbers in the list correspond to the numbers in the code comments.

1. Created a multi handle.
2. We will be creating the add_url_to_multi_handle() function later on. Every time it is called, it will add a url to the multi handle. Initially, we add 10 (based on $max_connections) URLs to the multi handle.
3. We must run curl_multi_exec() for the initial work. As long as it returns CURLM_CALL_MULTI_PERFORM, there is work to do. This is mainly for creating the connections. It does not wait for the full URL response.
4. This main loop runs as long as there is some activity in the multi handle.
5. curl_multi_select() waits the script until an activity to happens with any of the URL quests.
6. Again we must let cURL do some work, mainly for fetching response data.
7. We check for info. There is an array returned if a URL request was finished.
8. There is a cURL handle in the returned array. We use that to fetch info on the individual cURL request.
9. If the link was dead or timed out, there will be no http code.
10. If the link was a 404 page, the http code will be set to 404.
11. Otherwise we assume it was a working link. (You may add additional checks for 500 error codes etc…)
12. We remove the cURL handle from the multi handle since it is no longer needed, and close it.
13. We can now add another url to the multi handle, and again do the initial work before moving on.
14. Everything is finished. We can close the multi handle and print a report.
15. This is the function that adds a new url to the multi handle. The static variable $index is incremented every time this function is called, so we can keep track of where we left off.

I ran the script on my blog (with some broken links added on purpose, for testing), and here is what it looked like:

It took only less than 2 seconds to go through about 40 URLs. The performance gains are significant when dealing with even larger sets of URLs. If you open ten connections at the same time, it can run up to ten times faster. Also you can just utilize the non-blocking nature of the multi curl handle to do URL requests without stalling your web script.

Some Other Useful cURL Options

HTTP Authentication

If there is HTTP based authentication on a URL, you can use this:

You can perform your URL request through a proxy:

Callback Functions

It is possible to have cURL call given callback functions during the URL request, before it is finished. For example, as the contents of the response is being downloaded, you can start using the data, without waiting for the whole download to complete.

The callback function MUST return the length of the string, which is a requirement for this to work properly.

As the URL response is being fetched, every time a data packet is received, the callback function is called.

This was a slow but important week. 2009 is done – it’s funny how time flies. The office stood still as we gathered with families, friends to celebrate the new year. Ourselves, we’re concentrating on 2010 – it’s going to be an important, career (and company) defining year.

Important decisions were made. As I briefly mentioned last week, we have always struggled with the question of whether to focus on our products (which we love) or to help other people with their own through consulting (which we also love to do). We’ve reached a conclusion, we’re happy with our decision and we’re sticking with it.

The decision is to do both, but with a twist: we’re taking a very limited number of consulting projects each year from now on – we’re thinking of about 4. This is the best of both worlds. When we’re consulting, we’re inspiring and getting inspired by other people. When we’re working for ourselves, we’re reinventing our ideas and hopefully building special products that you can use.

I wonder (and the others do too) how clients will receive the idea of us only doing a limited number of projects. We want to make the best out of the time we dedicate to other people. We want to be completely passionate about it, so four projects seems like the sweet spot. We’ll see how it goes.

If we have one new year resolution, it is to bring passion back to our business. If you want to work with us (or to have us work for you) in 2010, get in touch – we’ll try to help. Thank you, and happy new year!
