This week we bring you a look at the various techniques used by designers in building a respectable and creative portfolio. In Part 1 (of 2) we take a look at the use of Big, Informative Headlines and Illustrations.

Big, Informative Headlines

Many designers choose to display a large textual heading on their portfolio’s homepage. This headline often introduces the individual (if it’s a freelancer) or company, as well as summing up what they provide. Additionally many designers display a quirky or creative message in order to set themselves apart from the competition.

Typically a headline will contain:

- The designer or company’s name
- Where they are from (optional)
- Services provided (e.g.: ‘I design websites’)
- A creative or unusual message (optional)
- A welcome message

Below are 20 examples of creatively placed headline messages in portfolio designs:

Illustrations

Designers often use bold and colorful illustrations in order to liven up their portfolios. Illustrations can range from deliberately child-like sketches, to incredibly detailed works of art, that take many pain-staking hours of labour to produce.

Why every freelance designer should set up a blog

A great design article about why it’s essential for every freelance designer to setup a blog discussing the perks which come with having and running your own design blog.

There’s a few pros and cons to becoming a blogger with the pros outweighing the cons. A design blog can be essential for every freelance designer because it can help a freelancer to generate a passive income on a monthly or weekly basis.

Broaden your name across to a wider audience

A design blog is perfect for freelancers to build up their name or their company brand on another platform. The advantage of a freelancer creating a blog means they can gain more exposure through blogging which means they can attract a wider range of clients to work alongside including even international clients.

A good blog can be something to add to your portfolio

When clients approach designers to work on a project 90 percent of clients will ask to see the designers previous work or past design projects, which they have worked on in order to find out if the designer will be suitable to work alongside and if they have the talent and skill to complete the design project to their satisfaction.

If your an upcoming freelance designer your portfolio may be very empty because you still have not yet had the opportunity to work alongside any clients. Creating a blog would be the perfect piece of work to showcase to clients and would be a great addition to your portfolio because it will show off you skills and talent to potential clients.

Generates traffics

A blog can be a great source for sending traffic to your portfolio website allowing you the opportunity for hundreds or maybe thousands of visitors to take a look through your content within your portfolio. Large amounts of traffic from any type of website can quickly and easily be turned into revenue weather it’s through selling advertisement spots or Google adsence.

Can generate extra income

A freelance designer always looked to make a passive income and a blog is a fantastic way to do so. There are several freelancers within the design community who have decided to extend their portfolio by creating a blog section, which has lead to huge amounts of success and generated extra additional income through simply creating and regularly updating their blog section with new content.

Here a collection of freelancers who have design blog sections and how much money they are estimated to turnover a month from just their blog section alone.

I’ve got my own hosting account via mediatemple.com so all I need worry about is buying the domain name for the website which is cheap as chips which from a website like heartinternet.co.uk it will cost about £7($11 dollars) with duration of the domain name lasting for a two year. Working out as 58p month just to simply buy a name for your blog which is fantastic and worth taking of advantage of.

Final Thoughts

I personally believe setting up a blog is great whether it’s a design blog or a personal blog because it can be a great way to interact within people in the design community, it can be finically rewarding also but don’t just blog because you think this will be a great opportunity for you to make some big bucks do it because it’s something your passionate about and enjoy doing.

I got one fresh, small project, where I needed small portfolio site for a friend. It got me thinking and lead to research what WordPress can offer to me, with its great CMS platform. I was a little bit surprised, because I got even better results than I expected- theres was a plenty of interesting portfolio, photo gallery themes, where homepage was static, but still you can tie together static with dynamic content and add blog as well. Maybe it’s nothing new or signifunt for most of you, but I wasn’t aware there is possible to get such theme so easily, where of course my friend could manually change it’s content without touching or learning any code knowledge.

It was commercial theme I tested, but since most of people look just for free stuff, I gave it a try and searched for free Portfolio, photo gallery type themes. Maybe results aren’t too bright, but those themes are completely free for using. Máximo has a very distinct style in which he attempts to create an imaginary world from torn pieces of the real world, as he briefly explains in his about page:

5 Tips on How to Create an Effective Online Portfolio

Came across a You Tube video a tablet demo where The Wonderfactory collaborated with Times Inc on how best to use this piece of gadget called the SI Tablet. (love this product). What got me interested is the way they presented and how they expressed what they feel makes them excel in their field. Simple, concise and straight to the point.

5 things we do exceptionally well (excerpt from Wonderfactory)

In the paragraphs below you’ll read about many of our services. If you’re short on time, just know that, with all due respect and humility, we do five things better than anyone.

1. Manage humongous, complicated site launches

If you face one, you know how stressful it is. Before we opened The Wonderfactory, we handled the relaunch of America Online, probably the largest site redesign and launch in the history of the Internet. Since then we’ve done WebMD.com, MarthaStewart.com, Newsweek.com, NationalGeographic.com, TheWashingtonPost.com, and TheHuffingtonPost.com. Relax. We’re not saying they’re easy, but they’re definitely not as difficult as most companies make them out to be.

2. Killer Design

You no longer have to look like Yahoo or Amazon to be successful on the Web. If you depend on design to differentiate yourself from the masses of other brands out there, we are the shop for you. Just check out our portfolio. If you don’t like what you see, stop reading here.

3. Create addictive brand experiences

Your average visitor probably stops by a couple of times each month and views a couple of pages per visit. You want them back at least once a day, and you want them immersed in ten or fifteen pages. Good. So do we.

4. Invent new advertising models and sources of revenue

We worked on the first banner that ever appeared on the Web, and it had a 44% click through rate. It’s been all down hill since then. Banners eat it. You know it, we know it, and most importantly, consumers know it. You can do better. Let us help.

5. Laugh – We get paid to think of things that have never been done. If that’s not fun, what is?

The above copy is a good way of writing your about page. The best way for you to get noticed with so many online portfolio is to make sure you:
1. Do Good work – by doing good exceptional work that you can showcase and truly be proud of, people will not only be interested in knowing more about you, but you will have the benefit of word of mouth advertising or recommendation. Most people now value recommendations, more than just the ad they read or watch.

2. Make it Simple and Concise – Time may sometimes be the problem of so many people who go online to check information. If your material doesn’t capture your audience, then you loose them. Or if your material will take so long for a person to understand, again you might end up having them check out another site with the same service that you offer.

3. Include Case Studies - Make them know you understand them - By citing examples on how your company has solved or came through a difficult situation and please include statistics, how the campaign was received, etc. Here consumers will further understand what you do and that you are one of the best companies to help them.

4. Give your Portfolio a Human side – Include a short bio of who you and those working with you. This gives the consumer a quick look at each individual achievements and expertise.

5. Killer design - Again, you want to capture the audience, having a killer design will definitely give your online portfolio a well deserved 2nd look by our ever busy consumers. Clutter is one major barrier in the online world. Be unique, compelling, but make sure as well that you balance your content with your design.

Just to illustrate point #1 here is a collaboration between The Wonderfactory and Time, Inc. is an excellent example of how tablets will enable the creation of innovative, addictive experiences by publishers, media companies, and advertisers. The video now has 246,879 views (time of post) and was released only last Dec 2.

One of the most incredible modern illustrators is the Bosnian Adi Granov. He first came into the spotlight in 2004 when he worked on the Iron Man miniseries Extremis. Critical Mistakes Freelancers Make

Seeing as we are all human (well, presumably whoever is reading this post anyway), we should recognize that mistakes happen. They even have that saying, “To err is human…,” which goes to show that it is not only commonplace for us to err once or twice: it is expected. But a method is behind this madness, because making mistakes is one of the major ways we learn. This is no different for freelancers.

Finding our way over these bumps in the road often gives us valuable insight to take away. It helps us develop techniques and methods that we can incorporate into our creative process. As freelancers, we have the benefit of access to an entire online community that is willing to share its experiences so that we can learn without having to make the same mistakes.

So in this post, we look at 10 critical mistakes freelancers make. Hopefully, if you haven’t already made one of these mistakes yourself, you can learn the lesson behind it.

They Don’t Use A Contract

One of the first things freelancers learn when contracting out their services to others is… to use a contract! Unfortunately, we often learn this lesson the hard way. For whatever reason, we think that a particular client of ours is someone we can work for without the aid and protection of a contract. This tends to end in one way: by biting us in the back end.

Without this safeguard in place, you open yourself up to so many potential problems, and you may inadvertently end up committing to more than you had intended or even imagined. Freelancers only make this mistake once, if at all. This lesson is not a secret in the freelance community. The advice comes up often: always use a contract. And many heed the warning once they hear it.

They Misuse Social Media (Or Don’t Use It At All)

Another common, but critical, pitfall that freelancers tumble into is misusing social media, if they even use it at all. Social media is a major tool that offers all freelancers an invaluable resource at their fingertips. An entire community of professionals connected via modems, ready and willing to offer each other whatever assistance they can. Neglecting this stream of industry insight, or not using it properly, can hinder the growth of your business.

Social media is about interacting with people and fostering relationships, which, if done with consideration and attention, can create opportunities you would have otherwise missed out on (not to mention friendships that can outlast jobs). Especially at the beginning of your freelancing career, if you make the mistake of misusing the media, you could be seen as an anti-social pariah in your corner of the Web.

They Put Quantity Over Quality In Their Portfolio

When putting their portfolio together, some freelancers mistakenly believe that the more they add to their portfolio, the better. Then it becomes about quantity and not quality of work. They forget the value of the portfolio in opening doors and creating opportunities.

The phrase “Put your best foot forward” applies in this situation. Your portfolio speaks volumes about your skills, freeing you from having to say too much and risk coming off as more arrogant than confident. Let your portfolio do the talking, and don’t make the mistake of prioritizing quantity and sending the wrong message. Quality makes the best first impression, so make the most of it.

They Stop Learning

This one has to be said. It can do so much harm to freelancers, no matter what their field: that is, they stop learning. But especially for freelancers who work in a field as dynamic and ever-expanding as design and development, staying ahead of the curve is absolutely crucial to meeting your clients’ needs.

This field is continually evolving with new techniques and applications. Throwing in the towel on education is virtual suicide. You, your work and your career would stagnate. Thankfully, with this online culture we have today, cultivating an environment in which we can sustain our education is easy. Not taking advantage of these learning opportunities is a mistake that could potentially cost you your business.

They Don’t Know How To Deal With Clients

Another common mistake is that freelancers forget their people skills when dealing with clients. For whatever reason, we let slip in our minds that clients hire us because they don’t know how to do the work themselves. They are in unknown territory, and as freelancers we should always be sensitive to that and bridge as many gaps in knowledge as we can. This will only improve your future dealings with the client and earn you more respect and trust in the business.

Obviously, without clients, you are a freelancer in title alone, so make sure you know not only how to engage clients but how to entice them back. Being able to assess needs that they aren’t even able to articulate and then communicating it all back to them is an invaluable skill. Neglecting it can be costly.

They Fail To Prepare For Dry Spells

This mistake is definitely better learned second-hand, and that is not preparing for occasions when no work is coming in. Droughts hit even the best of them, especially in these tough economic times. Freelancers often forget to account for that in their pricing structure and to save up in good times for when things go south.

There is a logic behind the rates we charge, and part of it is to sustain us after we have completed work for one client and eagerly await the next. Of course, we can always find work to do, but paying work is what sustains us as freelancers. Calling this mistake costly is too close to punning for comfort, but its impact is definitely felt and could force you to suspend freelancing and seek out supplemental employment, thus making it even harder for you to create your own opportunities.

They Overload Their Plate

This next mistake sometimes results from a fear of the aforementioned dry spell. Of course, greed might also play a role. Whatever the reason, some freelancers don’t know when enough is enough, and they continue to take on new projects as their plate overloads. Overextending yourself and your business like this can destabilize your workflow.

Freelancers need a certain degree of self-awareness to know when they have reached their limit. Reputation—that is, a good one—is important to your business’ development. Spreading yourself too thin is never good, and the distraction could hamper your creativity. This is another of those mistakes that are difficult to recover from.

They Miss A Deadline (And Think It’s No Big Deal)

This, too, is often a consequence of the previous mistake in our list. Falling behind when you are overloaded is all too easy, but missing a deadline can have a debilitating effect on your business. And if you think missing a deadline is no big deal, your career may be over before it begins. Deadlines keep you on track and help you multitask, as well as keep your client on track with the development of their project.

Once again, reputation is critical to building your brand and making your mark in the freelancing market. And a great way to ruin that reputation is by proving yourself unreliable. Stay productive and ahead of your tasks to avoid disrupting your client’s timetable. If you end up making this mistake, own up to it. Don’t offer excuses, simply propose a new timetable and continue working hard to meet it. But clearly acknowledge the problem you have created for your client. If you make this mistake once, you may not have an opportunity to make it again.

They Lack Confidence

Lacking confidence in themselves or in their work is another mistake that can plague freelancers, even beyond their business. Being your own worst critic and holding your work to a higher standard than that of others is natural (right?). But at a certain point, you are no longer critiquing so much as tearing down your work. Dismissing the talent and abilities that have carried you this far is misguided and will do nothing for your productivity.

Without confidence, making it as a freelancer will be extremely difficult. You’ll start taking useful and well-intended criticism bitterly, missing the person’s point and spiraling further into a pool of doubt and self-pity. Lack of confidence hinders your skills and the growth of your business. Clients will pick up on it quickly, because the freelancer is supposed to have a commanding role. Our responsibility is to guide the client to make effective decisions and win them over to our point of view; without confidence, this becomes unlikely. You’ll undervalue both yourself and your work. So have faith in your abilities, and know that your unique voice is needed in the ranks of the freelancing arena.

They Go To Work For Someone Else

Another blunder freelancers make is to work tirelessly to build their business, only to accept the first offer for a cushy job that comes along. No longer being your own boss would seem easy to adjust to, but it can be like moving back under your parents’ roof after you’ve tasted the freedom of living on your own. It simply doesn’t fit as comfortably as it once did. Simply readjusting is not so easy because freelancing is more than a job: it is a way of life.

Some people tell themselves that freelancing was all along a stopgap to some greater dream, but true freelancers find that pill hard to swallow. For some, that might be true, but then those people were not freelancers so much as temporary independent contractors. Freelancers crave the freedom that comes with the ’lancing. Still others believe they can work for someone else and maintain their freelancing on the side. In theory, this might appear viable. The reality is harsher: freelancing is full-time. It is a way of life, and turning it into a part-time job spells trouble.

Raveal

A site that we’ve looked at in the past, Raveal is the efforts of the team at Flowz. It’s designed to meet all your self-promotional needs: it includes a resume, and portfolio and your social voice. This voice is a combination of all your online presences — twitter feed, blogs and wherever else you’re involved.

If you want one tool to represent you, Raveal is the tool for the job.

Krop

Krop is a combination of an online job board and portfolio management tool. It allows employers to look for potential employees and vice versa. This service can be used for absolutely free with no advertisements.

There is also a paid plan that allows for the storage of more images and access to more page styles. If you want to shop yourself around where people are also hiring, Krop is a great option.

Carbonmade

A service I reviewed last week, Carbonmade has grown in leaps and bounds this past year. And for good reason.

There is no resume service here. This app was designed to give you a blank canvas on which to display the most important aspect to selling yourself: your work. Talk is cheap — Carbonmade gives you the ability to prove your skills by your actions, not by fancied up text.

Good Portfolio

This service is aimed more at creative types who do not have skills in the area of web design: photographers and illustrators for example. It’s focused more on being your portfolio rather than a resume.

The site is simplistic in its look, but that may be the purpose in order to accentuate your work.

Haystack

Recently launched, Haystack is the work of 37signals. The concept behind the service is similar to Krop — it’s a place for designers to list their services, while at the same time allowing companies to seek out designers to hire.

But spend a little time on the site, and it appears to have quickly been populated with listings for design agencies. Agencies that charge a lot more than the more common designer working on his/her own. The service may be more useful to larger teams than to freelancers.

CargoCollective

This is a new entry in this space and is still in beta. But it has gotten a lot of attention from the design community.

It bills itself as a CMS on the front page, but also includes the following description:

Cargo evolved out of the system that runs the SpaceCollective community. We found it remarkably successful and efficient in creating visual content on the web, placing a strong emphasis on design, layout, image quality and typography. Our goal is to dramatically increase the accessibility and exposure of creative individuals on the Internet, while aspiring to build a networked context that will contribute to the culture as a whole.

Almost a community focused service, CargoCollective looks like it could be a strong player in this space in the near future.

CeeVee

In a different direction from the other services listed here, CeeVee focuses completely on resumes. There is no uploading of thumbnails here — other than an avatar, it’s text only.

For those who are not graphically skilled at all and looking for work in other sectors (writers, project managers etc.), give CeeVee a look. It’s 100% free after all.

Make the Best Choice

These apps are all well thought out and do much to show off who you are and what you can do. Make the choice that best suits your medium and then prepare yourself for new business.

Clean Geometric Poster Design by Albert Exergian

It’s been a while since my last post on posters. Maybe too great a while. I came across the portfolio of Albert Exergian the other night and knew this was something I had to share with you guys. His poster design style is very clean and geometric with minimal elements sometimes even none, sticking only with color and copy. Just how I like it

So I compiled this collection for your viewing pleasure today. Some of these are Albert’s self-promotional posters where we see a little bit of a cross between styles. Others, and the majority of this post, are personal projects of his – the popular TV shows poster series, where we get to experience his simple and clean geometric style.

Ultimate Dark Package Design Inspiration

The first real customer experience we have when we get a new product is the package. Of course you might say that with the internet we can buy online and see the product before buying it, I know I get it, but the package design is a very inportant part of the customer experience. The unboxing process is exciting, Apple has shown us that it really matters, and whe have been seeing more and more companies following that wagon.

In this post I decided to look for really cool package designs, but not randomly or super famous pacakges such as the awesome Apple boxes. Therefore, I will list only dark package designs. Some could be described as product designs, such as the "Salt&Pepper Cell", but they are so cool that deserved a spot in the list.

Steve Jobs has always been fascinated by packaging, believing the unboxing routine to be a crucial part of the customer experience. All of Jobs’s products have been carefully packaged going back to the original Mac in 1984. Jobs believes unpacking a product is a great way to introduce unfamiliar technology to the consumer — they explore the components as they unbox them. – Cultofmac.com

Design Review: Liam J Moore

As part of our feedback post, we promised to review one commenter’s site here on Pro Blog Design. Well, our winner was Liam J Moore, so we’ll be reviewing his site today.

A quick note to everyone who took part in the feedback post though, thank you for all of your suggestions! We’ve gone through every single one of them, more on that to come on Monday!

Now, to the review. Liam is a student completing his Masters project in Multidisciplinary Design this year. The blog currently serves a joint purpose; as a portfolio for his design work, but also as a progress log for the project.

The really interesting thing about Liam’s site is the style he has set it in, have a look:

What Has Been Done Well?

The most obvious part of this site that has been done well is simply how it looks. The color scheme consists solely of yellow, grey and white, all across the site. There are very few graphical touches, just large blocks of yellow or gray, all laid out to give quite a memorable appearance.

The vivid yellow is one shade you rarely find making up the background of a website. Combine this with simplicity of the setup to get quite a bold feeling from the website.

That leaves a good message about being brave enough to try new things as a designer. Perfect for a portfolio site.

Another unique touch is the picture in the sidebar. You’ll notice I couldn’t resist putting it into the intro image for this post, just because it’s such a cool idea.

A regular picture with a “Hello” speech bubble to welcome you to the site. Another simple effect. Another effective one.

Even the typography on this site is nicely set. The large fonts are effective where they need to be, and reading off the vivid yellow background is a lot more pleasant than I expected it to be. I don’t think it’s a move that any newspaper websites will ever copy, but given that this site is primarily a talent showcase, it might just be worth any small usability loss.

What Could be Improved?

One question I had to ask Liam before I wrote this review was this, “is the site primarily a portfolio, or a blog?”

The answer was that it had become both, but in the long run, the real purpose was to be a portfolio. Sometimes it can be hard to choose between two goals for a website, but to get the most out of it, you will need to make that decision eventually. With that in mind, let’s look at how we could re-assess the homepage.

The two things you will be drawn to first when you load the homepage are the large messages on the grey background in the center, and the “hello” image to the right. That’s fine. The text introduces you to the site, and the photo is a great personal touch.

But underneath that, there’s a large empty space. The sidebar extends 2 or 3 more screen’s worth down the page, stretching out the homepage where it doesn’t need to be. All of the content in the sidebar is useful, but not an essential.

Given the purpose of the homepage to drive readers to particular aspects of your site, we can take out some of this sidebar content on the homepage, and only display it on the blog pages instead:

Hello – Introduces Liam. Given that this is a site about Liam, it’s obviously going to stay!
What Am I Twittering? – Twitter is great, but perhaps this would be more relevant to longer term readers? (i.e. the people who will be on your blog page)
Flickr – The Flickr photos here are great. There’s nothing wrong with keeping them here, or perhaps we could find another way of displaying them elsewhere in the site?
Archives and Module Blogs – Both of these sections are navigation for the blog. But the reader hasn’t gotten to the blog yet, so let’s take them out.
Search – Again, the reader hasn’t chosen to visit the blog yet, so a search engine may not be what they’re after. It’s a small part of the page though, so it won’t do much damage in staying either.
Contact details – Always an essential for a portfolio!
Blogroll – Nice to have on a blog, but it takes up a little too much room for the homepage.

Now we’ve cut down on the space, how are we going to drive users to the portfolio page?

The first step is the simplest; in the welcome paragraph, link the words “portfolio website” to the portfolio. You could even link “Web & Graphic Designer,” and there’s no need to change the appearance of the text when it’s linked.

Another option would be to display pieces from your portfolio. Displaying the full images might be a little much, but smaller thumbnails of each could be effective.

Some Usability Tips To Consider

Liam’s site looks great, but as I browsed around it, there were a few little things that bugged me occasionally. Nothing major, but when a lot of small things come together, it can make a difference.

Logo not linked to the homepage.
The logo shade of yellow is very slightly different to the shade of yellow in the rest of the website. It’s not something noticeable at first, but might be worth looking at.
There are very few rollover effects on the site. Both the navigation buttons in the header, and the post headlines in particular, would benefit from the interactivity. For the post headlines, some CSS could be used to make the entire grey block into the link, and the effect only needs to be simple. Changing the font color to white would do it.
White comment fields. Normally white is great to read and write off, but when the white is set against the yellow background here, the contrast turns it almost neon.
Location of the Earth Divided tweet in the header. This tweet is exactly where I would expect a slogan to be. I was able to work out what it was when I saw the “22 days ago” at the end of the message, but for non-Twitter-addicts, it may be a little confusing.
The social sharing links at the end of each post are in blue. Given how well the site sticks to the 3 tone color scheme, it would be nice to see these few links fall in line with the rest.
When visiting the blog, you’re greeted with a lot of titles like “Tutorial #17” and a lot of talk about the Masters project. Given that the Masters is the focus of the blog for now and the next while to come, it would be worth giving a quick overview of what the project actually is at the top of the blog page. That way, new readers won’t be lost when they start to dive in!

Conclusion

All in all, I think Liam’s site has a great style to it. It’s boldly different to the norm, which is a selling point for any graphic designer. The stark yellow may not be to everyone’s taste, but striking moves are what it takes to get attention in a crowded niche.

Hot on the heels of last weeks web design inspiration post, 50 Examples of Effective Uses of Typography Within Web Design, we have 50 fresh minimally designed web sites. Quite often the two web design styles work well together, as you may notice from both posts.
The most important factor for minimal to work well, as it should be with all design styles (but, not always the case), is the content. Without good writing or a strong portfolio, the style has no impact and the web design looks cheap. And that is the key to minimal, in the hands of a skilled web designer, they know that the site design has to accentuate the content, and the content, in return, accentuates the web design.
Creating an effective minimal web design, at first thought, would seem to be the cheaper, easier and quicker option to merely throw up a site That is most definitely not the case. Knowing what elements to strip out of a page while still maintaining usability, is just one of the the many skills you will need to successfully build a minimal web design.

How To: Create a Sleek Single Page Portfolio in 10 Minutes

You don’t have to be a web designer to create an amazing portfolio – maybe you’re a photographer or illustrator or God knows what other type creative soul. And you don’t have to spend two months waiting for some friend to help you with a microsite. Noo sir! – there are very easy ways of doing this by yourself in just a few simple steps and this is one of them!

First you’ll need to sort out your projects and make sure you’ve selected your best pieces that you’re going to showcase. Once you’ve done this you should be ready to cut out some images of the project that you want your visitors to see. You can start creating the thumbnails (220px by 162px) and your main project images (with a 700px width).

After this you’re ready to set up your portfolio! You can download this free xhtml/css portfolio theme called Medifolio made by our friends from LogoMoose, upload your files and your own thumbnails & images to your own server. All you need to do now is make sure that you’ve got the image URLs right. More info on how to do this and on how to edit the projects info is available in the Help file from your download.
