As we saw at CES 2010, IPTV is going to become real in a very big way this year. Boxee has been one of the big players in this space for quite some time and today the company is announcing a move that will offer users and content partners more options and flexibility: Boxee Payments.

Boxee plans on releasing a Payment Platform this summer so that users can make purchases with one click of the remote. This will allow content partners to offer shows, movies and channels that were previously unavailable on Boxee. Partners can price and package content however they want, whether it’s pay-per-view or subscription.

The details are still being worked out, but Boxee will charge a small fee for the transactions (the plan is to charge less than the 30% that many other app stores and content ecosystems charge). By doing this, Boxee is, in their words, “[tying] our success as a business to the success of our partners.”

Having micro-payments built into Boxee has huge implications for the platform as a whole. Right now, the only downside of a system like Boxee is that although more and more partners are signing up to offer content through the service or offer an enhanced experience, when it comes to getting movies or TV shows that are accessible through platforms like iTunes or VUDU or CinemaNow, users are out of luck. This gives Boxee as a platform the opportunity to offer those enhanced options.

I’ve long wanted to see one of my favorite streaming content services The Auteurs on Boxee, because it’s really just a beautiful fit. The Auteurs streams premium film content from partners like The Criterion Collection to users at an affordable price. With a Payment Platform, stuff like The Auteurs could be accessible on your Boxee Box or HTPC, as well as on your laptop or desktop computer.

Make no mistake, subscription content plans that are aimed at IPTVs are coming. Apple might not have hit Apple TV out of the park, but the idea of being able to buy or rent content on your TV that you can also watch on your Mac or PC (or even iPhone or iPod) is compelling. Boxee is legitimizing itself in a sense by making it clear that it wants to play in this space.

The convergence of media options is upon us, and it will be fascinating to see how content providers, content platforms and consumers respond and react to these changes.

Mobile advertising firms are being bought up like hotcakes. Other recent deals include Google acquiring AdMob and Apple acquiring Quattro. The Opera AdMarvel deal is reportedly for $8 million in cash plus a $15 million earnout.

Following the guide isn’t a beginner’s task—you’ll need SFTP access to your Apple TV, an SSH-capable terminal to work through, and be comfortable enough with either of them to navigate to your /Users/frontrow directory to do the installation work. That said, the process itself is just a step-by-step process for any Apple TV that was already opened up by a previous Boxee installation, and it doesn’t wipe out any media that you’ve got stored on your box at the moment.

In September, we covered the launch of Oneforty, a Twitter-specific app store. Today Oneforty is “alpha testing” its e-commerce platforms, making it possible for developers to sell their Twitter apps or services directly through Oneforty.

From the offset, one of the primary goals of Oneforty has been not only to connect users with the best Twitter apps, but to give developers a platform to sell their products to spur innovation in the overall Twitter ecosystem. However, until now, developers who didn’t already have an existing e-commerce solution on their own sites couldn’t sell directly with Oneforty.

Developer and Community Focused

I spoke with Oneforty’s CEO, Laura Fitton (@pistachio), last night and she continued to reiterate the importance of supporting the development community. “I’ve seen so many really great Twitter apps disappear because the developer couldn’t get enough exposure to pay hosting fees,” she said.

On that end, the revenue split for Oneforty’s e-commerce platform is pretty fair. The minimum price is $0.99 and Oneforty gets a 25 percent commission. For more expensive apps ($14.50 and above), Oneforty will take a smaller cut. When you consider how much transaction fees can cost a developer, having that taken care of, plus having the exposure to the Oneforty community, is pretty cool.

It’s not just apps, developers can use Oneforty as a place to sell tickets to events as well, and Oneforty is looking to expand into other areas in the future.

What we appreciate about Oneforty’s approach to e-commerce is that if a developer wants to sell through Oneforty, that doesn’t preclude her from also selling on her own site.

Getting Started

At the bottom of the Oneforty homepage is a “Are you a Developer?” link. Developers can click that, register as a developer and then start the process of playing with the API to set up payments.

Developers can set a price and Oneforty will show them how much revenue they can expect to get from each sale at that price. Sellers also have a easy way of looking to see how much revenue they have collected from Oneforty. Today’s rollout is being called an alpha test, so if support issues do arise, devs can use the ZenDesk support form, Oneforty’s IRC channel (#oneforty on freenode) or even call CEO Laura Fitton directly on her cell phone.

Oneforty Is Growing

In addition to rolling out the e-commerce platform, Oneforty has also confirmed that it has closed a $1.85M Series A funding round, led by Flybridge Capital Partners. The idea of a Twitter-specific marketplace makes sense and can be beneficial to users and developers.

Oneforty says it will use the funding to make some new hires and accelerate platform development.

Good news for anyone who loves interacting with a particular Tumblr: The blogging platform has added an Ask feature that allows you to directly ask a blogger questions.

The Tumblr staff began testing out this feature over Christmas, but only opened it to all users today. If you’re a Tumblr user, you’ll have to head on over to the Messages area of your Dashboard to enable this function. (You can also enable anonymous questions, but as Tumblr warns, this could potentially lead to trolls getting up in your face.)

This feature is sure to be a boon to Tumblr bloggers, who already have a built-in community on the platform. Now, in addition to getting feedback in the form of comments, reblogs and “likes,” users will be able to have actual dialogues with readers.

If you want to ask a blogger a question, simply go to your dashboard and pass your cursor over the user icon. The option to ask a question will appear when you do so. (It seems they’re working out some bugs, because this took a few tries for me.)

You can then ask any question you want, but there are no promises that they’ll answer…

The question then goes to the user’s inbox. After reading, they can decide whether or not to answer the question, and publish it to their blog.

I, for one, am super excited about this new feature. It really demonstrates how Tumblr is becoming more of a social networking site than merely a blogging platform, and is sure to make connecting with my readers far easier.

Might I suggest queuing up this jam while conceptualizing some queries of your own?

Quick Pitch: SaveFans! is an offer based ticket platform that allows users to negotiate the price paid for live event tickets.

Genius Idea: SaveFans! brings some sanity back to buying tickets. Sellers can list tickets for free and buyers can negotiate prices for tickets for sporting events, concerts and theatre shows.

I think that most concert goers or sports fans would agree that the live event industry is catered towards the promoters/ticket agencies (soon to be ruled by one company) and not the fans themselves.

SaveFans! wants to change that. The site, currently in public beta, allows individuals to negotiate ticket prices and for sellers to offer different seats at different rates and to negotiate with potential buyers.

You can find listings for concerts, theatre or performing arts shows and sporting events. If you find a show you’re interested in, you can see what options are available and how much the seller is asking. If you want to make a different offer, you can do that and the seller can accept, reject or give back a counteroffer.

SaveFans! charges a $5 connection fee, regardless of how many tickets you buy — and sellers don’t have to pay to list tickets, just once they are sold.

Frankly, it’s a nice idea. Ticketing can act more as a free market rather than a controlled monopoly.

It’s still in the rumour stages with no official word yet from the organization, but the blog software platform WordPress has set up a blog at the android.wordpress.org domain, Blog Herald notes.

They did the same for the existing mobile WordPress versions for iPhone and Blackberry, which points strongly to an app in development for those with Android phones.

With the launch of Google’s shiny new Nexus One Android phone in all likelihood just around the corner on January 5, we wonder if WordPress plans to capitalize on the Android buzz by announcing the new app on the same day. Even if not then, it’s probably pretty safe for Android owners to start getting their hopes up that a WordPress app is coming up for the platform in the not-too-distant future.

A new platform from Kynetx has tools that let developers use customer preferences to add features to Web sites, regardless of the browser.

Phillip Windley, CTO, and Stephen Fulling, CEO of the Utah-based startup, came to Robert Scoble’s home to explain how the platform works and to show us the application in action in this building43 video.

“Our elevator speech is that we provide a development system for building applications that respond to context in the user environment,” Fulling explains in the video.

What does that mean?

It means that customers can get something extra when they come to a Web site. For example, if a AAA subscriber has her or his membership card information installed on PC or mobile device, an extra box with “AAA discounts” will be listed next to companies whose names turn up in a Google search for keywords such as rental cars or hotels.

Another application, through the Minutemen Library Network, alerts members that “this book is available in your local library,” after scanning book titles on a Web site. That application leverages the Jon Udell Library Lookup Project.

“As a developer, you can create the client-side experience” using rules-based platform and Javascript, says Windley.

Kynetx (pronounced Kuh-neh-ticks) is less than two years old. According to the founders, it was bootstrapped for the first year with the money Windley and Fulling got when they sold the small plane they jointly owned.

The Kynetx Developer Conference in November drew 150 people, and the company plans another one in the spring of 2010.

At the developer conference, Doc Searls, senior editor of the Linux Journal and co-author of The Cluetrain Manifesto, said platforms such as Kynetx show the balance of power is shifting.

“As customers gain more power to express their actual intentions, we will move from an economy that places a premium on guesswork – especially advertising, an ‘attention economy’ — to one that places a premium on knowledge that can only come from customers: the customers’ actual intentions. For example, their shopping lists. The result will be an ‘intention economy’ that is a vast improvement on the attention economy,” Searls said.

CrunchBase, the technology company profile Web site, lists AdaptiveBlue and Greasemonkey as compettitors.

Raphael Moll explained on the Android Developers Blog, “It provides information about deployed Android-powered devices that is helpful to developers as they build and update their apps.  The dashboard provides the relative distribution of Android platform versions on devices running Android Market.”

With this information (provided in the form of a pie chart and table), developers can decide if it’s worth their time to support dusty platforms.  Catering to Android Platform 1.1 would pretty much be a waste, for example, since it appears that just 0.3 percent of devices use it anymore.

And then here’s some promising news regarding the future: Moll wrote, “We plan to update the dashboard regularly to reflect deployment of new Android platforms.  We also plan to expand the dashboard to include other information like devices per screen size and so on.”

Now that Google Wave has opened up to one million users and there are countless unused invites floating around, just about anyone who wants to take Google’s new collaboration tool for a spin can do so. Sure, some users are disappointed with the platform, but if you’re among them you’ll have to admit that whether it’s going to catch on or not, it’s been used for some neat stuff.

Four uses in particular have stood out for their cleverness and high fun factor, and you probably didn’t see any of them coming. Each has gotten a lot of press, so if you’ve been following Wave closely you might have heard of them.

We’d like to hear about more fun uses for Wave. Have your friends or colleagues come up with anything creative? Read these examples, then tell us if you have any ideas for exciting new applications.

1. Manhunt

A Washington man was suspected of shooting four police officers, but when he evaded capture, a state-wide search began. That’s a regular story, but this time a new tool was used. The Seattle Times created a public wave where readers, officers, and journalists could post and update information that might lead to the alleged shooter’s capture.

The Wave received photos of the suspect, sightings, a description of what was believed to be his vehicle, evidence, and updates from the police radio. The Times also set up a Google Map with place markers for important events and locations in the manhunt.

2. The Declaration of Independence

When Wave was first announced, a lot of people were having trouble sussing out what it could be used for. O’Reilly Media founder Tim O’Reilly suggested a great demonstration tool to Wave designer Lars Rasmussen: Dramatization of the drafting of famous historical documents in Wave.

The Declaration of Independence was used, and if you have a Wave account, you can take a look at the wave and see the edits as they happen. Many of the fake changes are humorous — for example, the first pass at the opener says “we hold these truths to be awesome” rather than “self-evident” — and they illustrate Wave’s strengths well.

3. Role Playing Games

Role playing games were among the first traditions geeks ported to networks. Since then they’ve been played through e-mail, instant messaging, social networks, and virtual worlds. It was inevitable that they’d make their way to Wave as well.

It turns out the platform is well-suited for them. Players and game masters can easily embed supplements like maps, statistics, dice rollers, and character portraits. Players can start private in-character conversations between one another, and game masters can relay information to specific characters. Play-by-e-mail RPGs have been popular for a long time, but thanks to all the extra tools and the real-time functionality, play-by-wave RPGs have a good chance of achieving even more success.

There’s a wave out there that was created to list all the RPGs currently running on the platform, so go and check that out to get started if you’re into that sort of thing.

4. Pulp Wave Fiction & Good Wave Hunting

These videos went viral when they debuted; watching them is like watching Wave widgets do interpretive dances to the dialog and events in two famous scenes from American cinema. These aren’t actually useful, but they’re without a doubt the most popular and entertaining items on the list. Watch the videos here, but be warned that this is Pulp Fiction and Good Will Hunting we’re talking about; the dialog is probably NSFW.

ParamountClips.com is powered by Digitalsmiths VideoSense platform. Users can search the Paramount library by actor, locations, or lines of dialogue. VideoSense combs through the collected metadata to locate the relevant clip.  Clips can be reformatted, exported to any platform that plays video, and monetized.

Currently the site has clips from around 80 films including "Forrest Gump," "Top Gun," "Iron Man," and "Star Trek." Paramount plans to add 200 more films over time and eventually have about 1,000 of its titles available. The site will also open up to non-business users, but it’s not clear when that will happen.

"This new platform enables Paramount to create a ‘digital blueprint’ of our entire film library that can be monetized across an unlimited combination of screens, interactive applications, strategic initiatives and business relationships worldwide," said Geremie Camara, VP of Product Development for Paramount Digital Entertainment.

"With the Digitalsmiths technology, we are opening new revenue streams for our premium film and clip library."

Ajax.org PlatForm has the desktop advantages of quick response time—the client handles a majority of the processing load, and generally only a small amount of data must be retrieved from the server (usually from a web service). Furthermore, the data represented on the screen has more density, and does not need to be refreshed— animations and other user cues are possible. Back in November of 2008, we covered a project called StoryTlr, which put an interesting spin on the traditional lifestreaming concept. Instead of simply listing all of your updates from various networks and sources, StoryTlr lets you repackage that content so that it tells a story.

The platform and project had some really interesting ideas, but in October the founders of the project — Laurent and Alard — announced that StoryTlr would be shutting down on December 31. There just wasn’t enough time or commercial interest to sustain keeping the service going. However, in a pretty classy move, the guys have open sourced the platform, meaning that existing users can download all of their data and migrate to a self-hosted solution. It also means that people who might have never even used StoryTlr can play around with some of its features for their own uses.

The first version of StoryTlr is now available from a Google Code repository, with installation instructions and answers to frequently asked questions.

StoryTlr is being released under the Apache 2 license, which means users can even use it for commercial projects. Laurent and Alard plan to keep updating and monitoring the codebase over the next few weeks until a stable 1.0 is available.

If you’ve always wanted to have a way to aggregate and lifestream your different online activities — but you actually want to own the data and control where and how it appears, you might want to give StoryTlr a look. The shuttering of hosted services is just one of those things that happens on the Internet. We like that StoryTlr gave its users advanced notice, made it easy to export their existing data and have now open sourced the platform so that individuals can build their own copies or even extend the idea.

Recently, the WordPress Core Commit Team announced that it will be extending its official umbrella to what are currently known as ‘canonical plugins.’ These are defined by the Team as:

“…plugins that are community developed (multiple developers, not just one person) and address the most popular functionality requests with superlative execution. These plugins would be GPL and live in the WordPress.org repo, and would be developed in close connection with WordPress core. There would be a very strong relationship between core and these plugins that ensured that a) the plugin code would be secure and the best possible example of coding standards, and b) that new versions of WordPress would be tested against these plugins prior to release to ensure compatibility.”

bbPress is in consideration to be one of these canonical plugins that will fall under the leadership of the WordPress community.

What Does This Mean for WPMU?

Depending on when the WP and WPMU merge occurs, relative to when bbPress becomes a WP plugin, the main differences developers would be dealing with are forum structure and theming architecture. It’s not yet clear whether there will be a standalone version of bbPress, as many sites use now, in addition to the WordPress plugin. The most compelling reason to use bbPress is its ability to integrate with WordPress, as it does already. However, there are some users who embrace the bbPress platform outside of a WordPress installation.

According to the logs for the 12/9/2009 IRC meetup for the new bbPress, if the plugin option is pursued then Matt and his team will consider the implementation of bbPress shortcodes within WordPress, which would ensure that bbPress has access to more features available in the WordPress core. This may also simplify the bbPress theming process to utilize WordPress themes with forum-specific page templates. The IRC meetup included discussion about centralizing the documentation and the creation of a task force to organize the bbPress community.

It is reassuring to know that the bbPress platform will continue to be developed, albeit with a different direction. It’s about to become more accessible to a wider range of users. On December 4, 2008, Facebook Connect opened for business. It was the first major extension of the Facebook platform, allowing users to log into their favorite Web sites with their Facebook credentials and move their social graph anywhere on the Web.

Now a year and five days later, Facebook is (belatedly) celebrating the birth of one of its most successful products. Sixty million users successful, in fact.

The company revealed that, since December of 2008, Facebook has become integrated on more than 80,000 Web sites (probably not including the countless ones using apps like Disqus) and is in use by more than 60 million Facebook users. That amounts to 160,000 new Connect users every single day.

While those numbers are indeed impressive, they still only represent 17 percent of Facebook’s 350 million total users. Still, that gives Facebook Connect more users than both Twitter and LinkedIn.

Connect has been an incredible platform and a major driver for Facebook’s increasing growth and influence around the Web. It originally began as a counter to MySpace’s data availability initiative and was in fact integrated with key partners all the way back in July 2008, which I kind of consider Connect’s real birthday.

Regardless, the platform keeps growing and has avoided the pitfalls that have taken down other Facebook products, most notably Beacon. Happy belated birthday, Facebook Connect.

Twitter apps are about to get a lot more exciting. All our favorite Twitter tools, from iPhone apps to web apps and beyond, have so far been limited by the fact that developers only have access to a limited set of data, not the full “firehose” of tweets being created.

That’s about to change. Twitter announced today at LeWeb conference in Paris that the firehose will be made available to all developers in “early 2010″. This would give ordinary coders the same access to data that Google and Bing have, and create a platform for even greater innovation. Twitter’s Director of Platform, Ryan Sarver, said the firehose would be monetized via revenue sharing with partners, although did not provide details.

Combined with the launch of Google Real-time, the move could restart Twitter’s formerly rapid growth, which many say has flatlined over recent months.

In the context of the mobile platform wars, the contest is often framed as “the iPhone” versus Android, BlackBerry and rest of the smartphone market. However, even if the iPhone is the only phone that Apple sells, there is another device that runs on the iPhone OS: the iPod touch.

In fact, according to the mobile analytics firm Flurry, the iPod touch might even be Apple’s secret weapon when it comes to long-term results and platform retention. Flurry makes this argument in its November Industry Pulse report.

iPod touch, Training Wheels for the iPhone

A big part of Flurry’s assertion is that the userbase using the iPod touch is going to be more inclined to buy an iPhone when the decision to buy a smartphone comes up. Flurry is classifying iPod touch users as being young teens. While this might be true, we haven’t seen any demographic information regarding the average age of an iPod touch owner.

Flurry’s argument about the iPod touch building up brand loyalty, product familiarity and an existing repository of content (in this case, apps) mirrors the same trend that many computer and industry analysts wrote about beginning in 2004. The “iPod halo effect” was the idea that the good experience consumers had with the iPod would make them more likely to become Macintosh customers. Users were introduced to the Apple brand via the iPod, became loyal, and by extension were willing to switch computing platforms.

This halo effect has largely been cited as one of the reasons that the marketshare for Mac OS X is up so much since 2003, when the iPod first started to gain real momentum in the digital device space. Flurry’s argument extends this principle to the iPod touch, only instead of moving consumers towards the Mac (although that may still be a side effect), iPod touch users will be more likely to move to the iPhone.

To our knowledge there haven’t been any studies proving or disproving this relationship, but as a theory, it does make sense. Anecdotally, I can say that as a BlackBerry user before getting an iPod touch in 2007, it was only after owning the iPod touch that I was willing to resign myself to lower-quality cellular service in exchange for the iPhone.

iPod touch Users and Social Networking and Social Gaming

In Flurry’s latest report, they look at the average number of user sessions on the iPhone, the iPod touch and the Android platform. All three platforms have increased user sessions, but because the market as a whole has expanded, the iPhone’s percentage has fallen.

In the social networking and social gaming area, the iPod touch has gained the most ground since June. Take a look at the chart below:

The fact that the iPod touch is growing more than platforms like the Android in areas such as user sessions for social networking and social gaming is interesting, but it might not end up being statical proof of anything. After all, the reason for the increases could be more wireless hotspots or more use of applications with networked capabilities.

Still, as a gaming platform, the iPod touch offers some significant advantages over its competitors like the Nintendo DS and the Sony PSP. Games tend to be less expensive and the download-to-device ability and potential integration with other social graph services makes the platform a real winner.

Just as the Internet has evolved over the past decade, cell phones have become much more than devices for making and receiving phone calls. Today, smartphones can do everything from email, to sync with our desktops, to turn-by-turn driving directions.

As the editor of a blog that covers technology, one of the questions I’m most often asked by friends is “what smartphone should I get?” The answer is always: it depends. Each platform has its pros and cons, and depending on how you want to work when on the go, one may prove significantly better than another. Here’s a look at some of the things to consider and ask your wireless retailer about if you’re looking to get a smartphone or get your whole team connected:

Operating System

Just like computers can be either PC or Mac, smartphones run any of a half dozen popular operating systems: iPhone, BlackBerry, Windows Mobile, Android, Palm, and Symbian. And just like your computer, the OS you choose will be the most important decision in terms of determining what your mobile experience will be like for the next two or more years (the likely length of your contract).

Some general characterizations about each: iPhone has the most apps and perhaps the most compelling interface. BlackBerry is superior for power email users. Windows Mobile works the most seamlessly with Microsoft Office. Palm offers an intuitive way to use multiple applications simultaneously. Android, though relatively new, may ultimately offer the largest selection of devices. Symbian is the most popular internationally.

You’ve probably seen commercials from the likes of Verizon and AT&T touting their own coverage, and in some cases, insulting that of their competitors. Be aware though, their coverage maps can be misleading. If you plan to use a lot of applications or browse the Web while on your mobile, you’ll want to know what type of 3G coverage your carrier provides in the areas that you’re likely to spend most of your time.

“There’s an app for that” might be the most ubiquitous tagline in advertising during 2009. That’s because quite simply, there is a mobile app for just about everything – on iPhone. But while iPhone apps may significantly outnumber those currently available on competitors, other platforms aren’t slouches either when it comes to the applications you’re likely to care about. In terms of social media, Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube have apps (either their own or third-party) on virtually every platform, and in terms of productivity, basic office functionality can be had across the board too (with some caveats, read on …)

Most smartphones will synchronize with your desktop and web applications, whether they’re Microsoft Outlook or Google Apps. However, depending on what you use, the experience can be smoother on one platform versus another. For example, not surprisingly Windows Mobile devices come with native support for Microsoft Office – including Outlook – whereas on Google Android devices, like the Motorola Droid, you’ll need to download and setup additional applications in order to sync. However, the Droid is optimized for users that run Google’s mail and calendar apps, among others. If this is a concern, ask your retailer about how the phones you’re looking at sync with your desktop or web productivity apps of choice.

Total Cost of Ownership

One of the most overrated things people tend to talk about when evaluating mobile phones – especially smartphones – is the upfront cost of the device. The truth of the matter is that most smartphones, from BlackBerry to Palm to iPhone, will cost between free and $300 when you activate, but thousands of dollars over the length of your wireless contract – typically two years. Thus, it’s far more important to consider the device itself, the monthly voice and data charges, and the other criteria discussed here. Additionally, if you’re getting smartphones for multiple users, be sure to inquire into the plans that the carrier offers for businesses.

Volumes could be written on the intricacies of each platform and which is superior, but now at least you know what to ask as you evaluate the 24×7 mobile lifestyle. Unfortunately, making a mistake can be costly – in terms of both frustration and potentially early termination fees – so be sure you know exactly what you’re getting into before signing your smartphone contract.

What I picked was bBlog, an open source PHP and MySQL blogging platform. It was Smarty-based, easy to extend, and easy to administer. There was a nice community developing plugins for it and pushing development along.

Unfortunately, bBlog’s development slowed … and then ground to a halt. Eventually, the project was declared dead. And so began my quest to move to a new platform.

After lots of umming and ahhing, and after trying a few alternatives and asking for suggestions on Twitter, I decided to give MODx a try. It looked like a capable system, easy to extend and modify, and reasonably powerful.

I also decided to change my hosting package. JaguarPC had hosted my site without too much trouble for a couple of years, but I wanted to learn my way around server management, so I opted for a Slicehost package.

And because all good things come in threes, and everything else was going to be new, I decided to put together a new design too. The old one was thrown together rather hastily and although it worked, I wanted to make a clean start.

So here we are … MODx, Slicehost, new design. There are bound to be a few teething problems (please let me know if you have any problems), but this will also allow me to add some of the new things I’ve been wanting to do for a while. To that end, comment replies have now been added – woohoo!

Under Carol Bartz’s leadership, Yahoo’s cut a lot of products and services in recent months so that it could better focus on more important stuff.  Briefcase, Farechase, GeoCities, and Go are some of the fallen that quickly come to mind.

This development follows the same logic.  According to what’s been labeled a "DMX End of Life FAQ," "We are doing this because of market trends that have helped to inform our evolved strategy of becoming a premium supply and demand platform focused on being transparent, differentiated and interoperable."

As a result, the DMX platform will stop serving ads at the end of January.  Then, on March 1st, reports will become inaccessible.  And Yahoo declined to recommend any alternatives to the DMX platform, in case you’re curious.

The biggest question remaining might just be what’s next on Yahoo’s list of decisions to rethink.

According to Reuters, not only is Nokia not abandoning Symbian as its smartphone platform of choice, but the Finnish mobile giant plans only one (1!) Linux-based device for the entire next year.

Nokia refused to officially confirm this information, which comes from a “source with direct knowledge of Nokia’s product roadmap,” saying that they “remain firmly committed to Symbian as our smartphone platform of choice.”

Personally, I’m not sure whether this is good or bad news. I’ve had the chance to try out the only Maemo-based device currently on offer, the Nokia N900, and it left me disappointed. Not in the terms of what it can do, mind you, as it’s packing some powerful hardware; but the UI and the touchscreen responsiveness if you try to use your fingers (there’s a stylus included, too) need to undergo a lot of improving to be anywhere near the iPhone-levels of usability and fluidity.

On the other hand, Symbian as a smartphone platform feels old and unable to compete with the iPhone OS, Android and Palm’s webOS, and Nokia can definitely benefit from starting over with a new OS. Let’s just hope that one Linux-based device that gets released in 2010 will be a game changer.

In “O’Reilly: The Web is at war, and it’s making me sad” (see http://news.cnet.com/8301-13577_3-10399710-36.html), we have seen over the past few months that News Corp has stepped up the stakes in its battle to block Google from indexing content from Rupert Murdoch’s online media titles, and that now Microsoft is said to be willing to pay Time Warner and News Corporation, among others, to make these sources available exclusively through Bing, it’s new search engine.

During this time, and many articles later, Rupert Murdoch has criticised Google for “kleptomania” and has threatened to cut them off from all his online publications. That is not quite as easy as he thinks, though, as nearly a quarter of all traffic to the Wall Street Journal’s website, for example, comes via Google. Microsoft, for their part, is willing to spend up to 10% of its operating income over the next five years, which could add up to a sum somewhere around $US11bn. Tim O’Reilly, who coined the term Web 2.0, questions the war for the control of the web, which directly contradicts his “interoperable platform” concept.

Not all agree though, as the Economist argues that, “a handful of well-funded and powerful platforms, locked in heated competition, could be better for consumers and generate more innovation than Mr O’Reilly’s vision of an internet made of many ’small pieces loosely joined’.”

The bursting of the dot-com bubble in 2001 was a turning point for the web and, with it, the concept of “Web 2.0″ was born. Its web pioneer Tim O’Reilly warned an audience at a recent Web 2.0 Expo that he thinks “we’re headed into another ugly time”, meaning that the corporates are ganging up on Google’s dominance, with Rupert “Dr Evil” Murdoch leading the charge and threatening to pull News Corp’s content carpet from under Google’s feet.

In the same CNet article, it says that: “O’Reilly’s attitude isn’t ‘bring it on, and get me a large popcorn with extra butter, while you’re at it’. Rather, he hinted that at least in some cases, he’s willing to embrace Google as a big, cuddly, benevolent dictator in the midst of it all.” Rather like Stalin dressed up in a Winnie The Pooh fancy dress outfit, maybe?

But with all fancy dress parties there are reactionaries in the mix, as Barbarian Group executive Rick Webb announced: “Setting aside the boo hoo, the internet is becoming a bunch of walled gardens arguments, when rational people have conversations about how to make the web actually usable and not 95 percent piracy, spam, and fraud…”

All this aside, it is becoming clearer by the day that the web is heading into a full-frontal period of bloody competition that could kill the concept of the web’s interoperability as we know it today.

In radar.oreilly.com, Mr O’Reilly clearly states that: “And so we’ve grown used to a world with one dominant search engine, one dominant online encyclopaedia, one dominant online retailer, one dominant auction site, one dominant online classified site, and we’ve been readying ourselves for one dominant social network…

“It could be that everyone will figure out how to play nicely with each other, and we’ll see a continuation of the interoperable web model we’ve enjoyed for the past two decades. But I’m betting that things are going to get ugly. We’re heading into a war for control of the web. And in the end, it’s more than that, it’s a war against the web as an interoperable platform. Instead, we’re facing the prospect of Facebook as the platform, Apple as the platform, Google as the platform, Amazon as the platform, where big companies slug it out until one is king of the hill.”

In a postscript, he predicts that: “Microsoft will emerge as a champion of the open web platform, supporting interoperable web services from many independent players, much as IBM emerged as the leading enterprise backer of Linux.”

"Over fifty million users entrust their professional identities and relationships with LinkedIn, helping build LinkedIn into the largest global professional network today," says LinkedIn’ Adam Nash. "However, professionals around the world use a wide variety of applications and Web sites to get their work done, and they have spoken loud and clear that they want the ability to leverage their professional networks wherever they work."

Now developers can integrate LinkedIn into their business applications. LinkedIn’s developer site has APIs and widgets.

"Over the past months, LinkedIn has supported integrations with some of the most prominent and critical software applications in the enterprise," says Nash. "Partnerships with companies like IBM, Blackberry (Research in Motion), and most recently Microsoft, have given us time to invest in both functionality and scalability of the platform."

Developers interested in using LinkedIn in their apps need only fill out a form at the site. The LinkedIn platform leverages the open OAuth standard, so integrations should be that much more simple.

On a related note, Twitter client TweetDeck is already utilzing the LinkedIn platform. They just announced that you can view or take action on your LinkedIn network updates from within the TweetDeck application.

It should be interesting to see the kinds of apps that start taking advantage of LinkedIn’s APIs. This could turn out to be a very significant event for increasing business networking, and even matching prospective job candidates with jobs.

When developers get their hands on a social media platform, amazing things tend to happen. For example, Facebook transformed web apps when it launched the Facebook platform. The result has been everything from Facebook Connect to FarmVille. Twitter’s an even better example when you start thinking of the countless Twitter apps for mobile phones and the desktop.

That magic is exactly what LinkedIn is hoping will happen with today’s launch of the LinkedIn Platform, which opens up outside applications to use LinkedIn’s data. Oh, and TweetDeck will be launching LinkedIn integration this week.

The company has been experimenting with a developer platform for a while. Most recently, LinkedIn announced integration with Microsoft Outlook 2010. However, until today only select developers could access LinkedIn APIs. Now any developer can work with the data, much like Facebook and Twitter.

You’re about to see a whole new wave of LinkedIn web applications. When I spoke with LinkedIn, I learned that a little less than a dozen apps would be launching LinkedIn integrations this week, including TweetDeck, Twitter’s most popular app (we’ll have another post detailing the new features soon, along with screenshots).

This is an important but long overdue move for LinkedIn. We can understand why it took longer — business users would have likely reacted badly to this a year ago, but with social media permeating the workplace, it’s probably the right time now.
