Concept art is a form of digital art that mainly uses Photoshop and other similar applications to create fantasy-like scenes. Concept art is generally used in movies, games and the cinema industry.

Concept art is very challenging, because it relies greatly on the artists’ imagination and their ability to visualize fantasy scenes that look similar to Sci-Fi movies and 3D games. Along with a great imagination, the artist needs to have very good illustration and Photoshop skills to be able to use the brushes and other tools for creating a final professional look for the scenes.

Create a Surreal Portrait in Photoshop

Today we have a guest tutorial by Dustin from Vallys In The Vinyl, a brand new texture blog where he’s releasing some of the best freebies around. He’ll be showing you how to create a surrealist portrait in Photoshop using photo manipulation and textures. Enjoy!

Resources used:

Step 1:

Open Photoshop and create a new document, 1700 pixels wide and 1100 pixels tall, with a resolution of 72. I have named my document “Bittbox Surrealist Portrait Tutorial”.

Step 2:

Create three folders, named Adjustment Layers(1), Textures(2), and Portraits(3).

Step 3.:

Drag the “Vintage-Paper” texture from the source folder onto the canvas, resize it to fit, and name the layer “Base Paper”. Place the layer below the three folders. This will act as the base layer for our composition.
Tip*: It will be important that you make sure the layers for this project are “Smart Objects”.

Step 4.:

Drag the “stockvault-boy” image from the source folder onto the canvas and re-size to fit. Place it in the “Portraits” folder. Next, drag the “stockvault-Man-01″ image onto the canvas and set the opacity to 50%. Rotate and move the image so that the man’s right eye is placed and aligned directly with the boy’s right eye underneath. Once you have done this, set the layer’s opacity back to 100%. Now create a layer mask for that layer. Using a large brush, around 400px, 100% opacity and 0% hardness, mask out the left side of the face, from the eye down to the mouth, and around to the other cheek. Don’t worry about detail just yet, we will go back and fine-tune the masking later on. You should now have a composition that looks similar to this:

Step 5. :

Keeping that same brush, add a layer mask to the “stockvault-boy” layer and mask out the nose and upper lip. I also masked out a little more of the facial hair on the man’s face. Our progress should look like this:

Step 6. :

Now we are going to add the last portrait image, which will serve as the mouth for our portrait. Drag the “stockvault-Man-02″ image from the source folder onto your canvas and place the layer under the “man-01″ portrait. Just like before, set the layer’s opacity to 50% and rotate/scale so the mouth area looks like it fits well on the face. Once you have it placed, bring the opacity back to 100%, create a layer mask, and mask out everything except the mouth area. Your progress should look similar to this:

Step 7.:

I think it is time to start adding some texture to this, so take the “Vintage Paper” texture from the source folder, drag it onto the canvas, re-size to fit, and set the Blending Mode to “Multiply”. Make sure that this layer is in the “Textures” folder. While we are working with this layer, go ahead and add a Layer Mask. Using a small, soft brush, mask out the eyeball areas. We are doing this so the eyes can maintain a crisp and vibrant look, helping them stand out in the composition.

Step 8:

The image is looking pretty dark right now, so let’s go ahead and add our first Adjustment Layer. In the “Adjustments” folder, create a new “Levels” adjustment layer. In the input boxes under the Levels Histogram, set the far right value to “235″, and the middle box value to “1.2″.

Step 9:

It is time to add some excitement to our portrait. Drag the “Book-Mesh” texture from the source folder onto your canvas, placing the layer above the “Vintage-Paper” in the “Textures” folder. Set the Blending Mode to “Multiply” and Opacity to 80%. Rotate and scale the image so that the mesh part of the texture fits the cheek. A good reference tip is to rotate the texture so that the edge runs parallel to the nose. Then mask out everything except the mesh on the cheek, using a soft brush again. Make sure to mask out over the eyes and mouth area. As with all of our layer masks, you will be able to back and fine-tune everything towards the end. Your progress should look something like this:

Step 10:

Now it’s time to add our last texture layer. Drag the “Crumbled-Leaves” texture from the source folder onto the canvas and place it between the two existing texture layers. Scale it so it fills the entire canvas, and set the blending mode to “Multiply”. Create a layer mask and using a large, soft brush, mask out everything except the right cheek and nose area. This is a step where you have tons of freedom. It is up to you where you want to have these leaves come through. Because this layer’s opacity is staying at 100%, I have constantly adjusted my brush’s opacity for masking in and out different areas. The main objective here is to give the skin a very flaky and brittle aesthetic. Here is what mine looks like so far:

Step 11:

You may have been wondering how we were going to fix the problem of the mouth being black and white in a color composition. We are going to address that now. Create a new “Hue/Saturation” Adjustment Layer right above the layer. We are going to clip this adjustment layer so it only affects the layer directly below it. To do that, we are going to look in the “Adjustments” panel, and click the third icon from the left the bottom tool bar. Done. Now we are going to set the adjustment attributes. First, check the “Colorize” check-box. Then set the Hue value to 35, the Saturation value to 45, and the Lightness value to -20. I know, it now looks bright orange and un-attractive, but don’t worry, that will be offset by the rest of our adjustment layers.

Step 12:

We are getting close to finished. Let’s make the rest of our adjustment layers. First, create a new “Curves” adjustment layer in the Adjustments folder, and place it below our Levels layer. This adjustment will be up to your judgment, but the basic idea here is to push and darken the blacks, and brighten the rest of the colors. Your image will look over-saturated and blown out after this adjustment. My histogram looks like this:

Below the Curves layer, add a Hue/Saturation layer. Bring the Saturation level to -20, then mask out the area over the eyes, so the eyes can maintain their color. Our last adjustment layer will be a Black & White layer. Create that and place it below the Hue/Saturation layer we just made. Set the opacity to 75%, and mask out mostly everything except the out of focus area on the left of our composition. What I chose to do for this was use the Gradient tool to make the layer mask and then go in with my brush for fine tuning. To use to Gradient tool to start, select the tool and make sure your Foreground Color is set as Black and Background Color as White. Now hold your Shift key and drag from the right side of the canvas all the way to the left side. Now with a solid foundation, you can go in with your soft, low-opacity brush and tweak it as needed.
Now here is our progress:

Step 13:

We are almost done, just a few small things left. The last layer we are going to make is a layer for some white paint over the left eye. Create a blank layer above every other layer and name it “Left-Eye White Paint”, then set the blending mode to “Overlay”. Then simply take a soft brush, around 300px and 30% Opacity, and brush some white paint over the left eye to help brighten that area. This is another step where you have lots of freedom and can use your taste and judgment.

All that is left to do now is to go in and fine-tune image positions and tweak all of your layer masks, particularly the portraits and textures, to make the image blend together as cohesively as possible. Here is my final result, of course it isn’t perfect or anatomically correct sometimes, but these are some quick and dirty ways to have lots of fun creating digital art:

Here is a preview of the image that we are going to be creating:

Step 1

Start by creating a new document (800X1000px).

Paste in your waterfall photo, resizing and cropping it to look like the image below:

Step 2

Now duplicate your waterfall background layer and hide the duplicate layer.

Select your original waterfall layer and apply a levels and color balance adjustment layer (be sure to apply a clipping mask to each adjustment layer, so that your adjustments only effect your underlying layer):

Highlights: +33 / -9 / -19
Midtones: +57 / -16 / -38
Shadows: -23 / -2 / -25

Step 3

Now select your duplicate waterfall layer which should be above your adjustment layers.

This waterfall will still have all the colors of the original photo. Apply a layer mask, and use a soft, black paintbrush to mask off the edges of the waterfall image, exposing the rock bed at the bottom, and trees at the top/sides.

You’ll notice how the waterfall itself is still nice and blue, but the underlying rocks which are now a more deep red color are showing through:

Now apply a levels and color balance adjustment layer. Be sure to apply a clipping mask to each adjustment layer:

Step 4

Now paste in your water splash 1 image, positioning it like the image below:

As the image background is plain black, you can then simply change this layer’s blend mode to ‘screen’ to hide the black background and only display the water.

Then apply a layer mask and mask off any stray bits of water, just to tidy up things a little. If needed, duplicate this layer in order to make the water splash more visible:

Step 5

Now download the heart brush set from the resources for this tutorial.

Select the third brush in the set, and apply the following brush settings in your brushes panel:

Brush Tip Shape Settings:

Size: 20px
Spacing: 163%

Shape Dynamics Settings:

Size Jitter: 0%
Angle Jitter: 100%
Roundness Jitter: 0%

Scattering Settings:

Scatter: 663%
Count: 3
Count Jitter: 100%

Now apply the brush on a new layer, making sure to follow the contours of your waterfall structure. For more intricate areas simply reduce the size of your brush. For now simply use a black brush at 100% opacity:

Now apply an outer glow and gradient overlay blending option. This should give your hearts a cool rainbow lighting effect:

Outer Glow Settings:

Blend Mode: Overlay
Opacity: 100%
Color: ffffff
Spread: 0%
Size: 7%

Gradient Overlay:

Blend Mode: Normal
Opaciy: 100%
Gradient: (rainbow default)
Style: Radial
Angle: 90
Scale: 100%

Finally, to make the effect more subtle change this layer’s blend mode to ‘overlay’ and reduce it’s opacity to 40%:

Step 6

Now paste in the image of your woman, positioning her so it looks like she’s sitting on the rock:

Now go to edit>puppet warp, and apply a puppet warp to your woman. I didn’t like how hunched over she was, so I warped her into a more upright position using my pointers:

The image is looking better, but if you notice the woman’s arm has become slightly distorted from the puppet warp:

To fix this, go to filter>liquify. In the liquify window select the ‘pucker’ tool. Click and hold roughly in the middle of your woman’s arm, and it should bring in the distorted side, making it look more in line:

Step 7

Now apply a levels and color balance adjustment layer, just to help blend the woman better with her surroundings. Remember to apply a clipping mask to each adjustment layer:

Step 8

Repeat the technique that you used earlier to apply a large water splash, and apply several smaller water splashes over your woman. You want to give the impression that the water is hitting into the rock bed, and splashing up over her. This means that you’ll need to apply layer masks where appropriate to make it look like the water is hitting into her:

Step 9

Now download the bubbles brush set from the resources for this tutorial and apply them over your woman, giving the impression that she has been covered in water:

Step 10

If you notice, there is no shadow being cast by your woman, which looks unnatural.

To fix this, create a new layer called ‘shadows’. Use a medium sized, soft, black paintbrush (around 20% opacity) to paint in shadows underneath her legs, foot and behind. This helps integrate her into her surroundings much better:

Step 11

Now paste in your bush photo from the resources for this tutorial. Paste/position in so that it overlaps your woman’s knee slightly.

Now apply a layer mask and mask off the background for your bush photo. For the edges of your bush use a more rough/jagged black paintbrush to help achieve a more random/natural edge:

Now apply a levels/hue and saturation adjustment layer to your bush layer, applying a clipping mask to each adjustment layer:

Levels Adjustment Layer Settings:

Hue/Saturation Adjustment Layer Settings:

Hue: +6
Saturation: -25
Lightness: 0

Step 12

Now create a new layer called ‘circle’.

Use your elliptical marquee tool to create a circle over the face of your woman. Then fill this selection with a radial gradient ranging from fd1100 to c00a00.

Now type out ‘LUST’ in an ornate, white font over the center of your circle. This represents the sin conveyed by our composition, as well as demonstrating how lust in the media often objectifies women, and conceals their true personalities:

Step 13

Now apply several more ferns/branches around the edges of your canvas, just to build up the overall composition. Remember to tweak the colors/levels of each image to match the surrounding composition:

Step 14

Paste in the flower image from the resources section for this tutorial into the bottom of your canvas.

Use your warp tool to warp the flower so that it’s less rigid looking:

Now apply a levels and hue/saturation adjustment layer:

Levels Adjustment Layer Settings:

Hue/Saturation Layer Settings:

Hue: +6
Saturation: -5
Lightness: -2

Step 15

Now create a layer called ‘large bubbles’. Select your bubbles brush from earlier, and apply a range of different sized bubbles over your canvas, including some very large ones. This should give the impression of perspective, as some bubbles appear to be floating nearer to us:

Step 16

Now create a couple of new layers called ‘yellow highlights’ and ‘cyan highlights’. On each layer drag out a few radial gradients ranging from yellow to transparent, and then cyan to transparent.

Now change each of these layer’s blend modes to ‘overlay’ and reduce their opacity to around 20-25%. This should give a nice subtle lighting effect to your composition:

Step 17

Now create a new layer called ‘lens flare’.

We’re going to apply our lens flare non destructively. Start by selecting your entire canvas, and then filling it with black. Then change your layer’s blend mode to ‘screen’. This should hide your black fill, but let you apply effects to your layer that will show through.

Go to filter>render>lens flare and apply a 100% brightness lens flare in the top-right of your canvas:

Now change this layer’s blend mode to ‘screen’ and reduce it’s opacity to 65%.

Step 18

Now create a new layer called ‘vignette’.

Use a low opacity, large, soft, black paintbrush to paint around the edges and corners of your canvas. This should help draw the viewers eye towards the brighter center of the canvas:

Step 19

Now create a new layer called ‘dodge/burn’.

Go to edit>fill and fill your layer with 50% gray. Then change this layer’s blend mode to ‘overlay’. This will hide your 50% gray fill but let you paint over your canvas in a non-destructive way.

Use a soft black paintbrush for your shadows/burn areas, and a soft white brush for your highlights/dodge areas.

The images below show your dodge/burn layer at ‘normal’ and then ‘overlay’ blend modes:

Step 20

Finally, apply a couple of gradient overlay adjustment layers.

Gradient Overlay Adjustment Layer 1

Gradient: Default gradient (red to dark green)
Blend Mode: Overlay
Opacity: 15%

Gradient: Default gradient (orange, yellow, orange)
Blend Mode: Normal
Opacity: 3%

Photo manipulation is a powerful tool that many advertisers, marketers and artists take advantage of. It makes the impossible seem possible. Often, it can even make people believe that what they see is real, albeit for short moment. If not, it at least makes certain messages or marketing ideas more marketable and easier to understand.

The craft has certainly gone a long way. The process of manipulating photos has become easier and faster. More people are able to enjoy this craft and the altered photgraphs that came as its result are viewed by more and more people.

Creating the Elaborate Photo-Manipulation ‘Envy’

Creating the Terrifying Photo-Manipulation ‘Wrath’

Resources Used In This Tutorial

Final Image

Here is a preview of the image that we are going to be creating:

Step 1

Create a new document (800X1000px). Create a layer called ‘background’ and fill your canvas with a radial gradient ranging from 3a2d25 to 221d1a.

Step 2

Now paste in your paper texture images (see resources section).

Resize it to fit your canvas appropriately, and then reduce this layer’s opacity to 5% to give a subtle textured effect.

Step 3

Now download the watercolor brush set from the resources section for this tutorial.

Create a new layer called ‘watercolor brushes’.

Apply all of the brushes from this brush set over the center of your canvas. Ensure that you use a white paintbrush.

Then reduce this layer’s opacity to 25% and change it’s blend mode to ‘overlay’.

Step 4

Now create a new layer called ‘highlight’.

Drag out a white to transparent radial gradient from the center of your canvas. Then change this layer’s blend mode to ‘overlay’.

The images below show the highlight effect at ‘normal’ blend mode, and then at ‘overlay’ blend mode:

Step 5

Now download the grunge cracks brush set from the resources section for this tutorial. Apply various brushes from the set, spreading out from the center of your canvas. Use a black paintbrush.

Then reduce this layer’s opacity to 20%, and change it’s blend mode to ‘overlay’.

Step 6

Now cut out the image of your woman from the resources section to this tutorial. I used the lasso tool, but you can use the pen tool, or even mask off the background for this image.

Paste your woman into the center of your canvas:

Step 7

Now apply some adjustment layers above your woman layer, in order to manipulate her and make her more green tinted.

With each of these adjustment layers, be sure to apply a clipping mask (layer>create clipping mask).

Hue/Saturation Adjustment Layer Settings:

Hue: 0
Saturation: -100
Lightness: 0

Levels Adjustment Layer Settings:

23 / 0.86 / 233

Color Balance Layer Settings:

Highlights: +18 / +16 / -25
Midtones: -15 / +8 / -19
Shadows: +2 / +1 / -21

Step 8

A great tip for working with adjustment layers is that you can actually mask off specific areas of your adjustment layer, giving you more control over your adjustments.

If you look at your adjustment layers in your layers palette, you’ll see a mask has already been created automatically. Simply select it, and use a soft black paintbrush to mask off areas of your adjustment layer.

For this composition, I want to make my woman’s face more skin colored and less green. Use a large, soft black paintbrush to mask off the facial area on your hue/saturation and color balance adjustment layer:

Step 9

Cut out and paste in your branch one image. Call this layer ‘branch one’.

Then go to edit>puppet warp. Use your puppet warp tool to help wrap this branch around your woman. (see below):

Step 10

Now go to layer>layer mask>reveal all. Mask off areas of your branch, so that it appears to be looping between the woman’s neck and arm.

Step 11

Now apply a levels, color balance and hue/saturation adjustment layer. With each adjustment layer create a clipping mask so that they only effect your underlying branch layer.

These adjustments should let your branch blend better with your wider composition.

Levels Adjustment Layer Settings:

36 / 0.83 / 236

Color Balance Adjustment Layer Settings:

Highlights: -11 / +11 / -21
Midtones: -21 / -2 / -21
Shadows: +2 / -1 / +12

Hue/Saturation Adjustment Layer Settings:

Hue: 0
Saturation: -30
Lightness: 0

Step 12

Now repeat the techniques used for the first branch, adding several more branches. With each branch warp it, mask it correctly, and then add adjustment layers to blend it properly.

Step 13

Now paste in your python photo.

Now wrap your python around your woman using the puppet warp tool. Apply a layer mask, and mask any parts of the tail that overlap your woman, giving the impression that the snake is coming from behind the woman.

Now apply a hue/saturation, levels and color balance adjustment layer. Be sure to create a clipping mask for each adjustment layer.

Hue/Saturation Adjustment Layer Settings:

Hue: 0
Saturation: -100
Lightness: 0

Levels Adjustment Layer Settings:

43 / 0.87 / 232

Color Balance Adjustment Layer Settings:

Highlight: 0 / 0 / 0
Midtones: +11 / +21 / -13
Shadows: +22 / +6 / -1

Step 14

Repeat step 13, adding another snake that wraps around your woman:

Now wee want to add some larger snakes to the foreground, adding to the depth of our composition.

Start by pasting in one of your snake photos from the resources section for this tutorial.

Now go to filter>convert to smart filters. This means that any filters you apply will be applied in a non-destructive way. If you want to go back and delete or alter them, this is really easy.

Apply a gaussian blur filter (4.5px strength). This blur effect will help give the impression of this snake being much closer to us, and therefore out of focus. This helps build depth in your piece.

Now apply a hue/saturation, levels and color balance adjustment layer, creating a clipping mask for each.

Hue/Saturation Adjustment Layer Settings:

Hue: 0
Saturation: -100
Lightness: 0

Levels Adjustment Layer Settings:

19 / 0.92 / 244

Color Balance Adjustment Layers:

Highlights: +11 / +13 / -9
Midtones: +21 / +8 / -13
Shadows: -5 / +1 / -8

Step 16

Repeat step 15, adding several more large snakes to comprise the foreground for your piece. Try to vary the blur amongst these snakes, giving several layers of depth.

Step 17

Now create a new layer called ‘lens flare’. Fill this layer with black, and then go to filter>convert for smart filters.

Go to filter>render>lens flare and apply a 105mm prime lens flare effect. Position the lens flare over your woman’s eye. (It will take some trial and error to position this correctly).

Now change this layer’s blend mode to ‘screen’. This will hide the black background of this layer, and just show your lens flare. However, your lens flare will be too strong, and will be concealing your woman’s eye. To fix this, simply reduce this layer’s opacity to 40%.

Repeat this technique, applying a second lens flare over the eye of the larger snake wrapping around your woman:

Step 18

Now we want to add some more tone to our image.

Create a new layer called ‘radial color gradients’. Drag out a series of bright and colorful radial gradients, each ranging from a bold color to transparent.

The idea of this step is to mimic the colors of your surrounding composition, but make them more intense. You can see that I applied greens, oranges and yellows to liven up my piece.

Once you have done this, reduce your layer’s opacity to 15%, and change it’s blend mode to ‘overlay’. This is a great way to add extra tone and color to your images.

Step 19

Repeat the last step, but this time apply white to transparent radial gradients, which will act as highlights over your woman.

Keep this layer’s blend mode as ‘normal’ but reduce it’s opacity to 10%.

Step 20

Now create a new layer called ‘dodge/burn’. Go to edit>fill and fill your layer with 50% gray. Then change this layer’s blend mode to ‘overlay’.

Use a soft paintbrush to paint in black/white for your shadows and highlights. You want to not only emphasize the highlights and shadows of your composition, but help blend your various elements together better. For example, consider where various elements might be casting a shadow, or where an overall light source is.

You’ll notice that for the darkest areas I’ve tried to give the impression of a shadow being cast from a snake or branch.

The images below show your dodge/burn layer at ‘normal’ blend mode, and then at ‘overlay’ blend mode:

Step 21

Now create a new layer called ‘vignette’. Use a large, soft black paintbrush at around 10% opacity to paint around the edges and corners of your canvas. This should make the center of your composition more engaging, and help add depth to your piece:

Now apply some text to the top of your canvas saying ‘ENVY’.

Font Settings for ‘ENVY’ Text:

Font Face: Trajan Pro
Size: 60pt
Kerning: -50
Color: ffffff
Styling: Regular

Step 22

Now apply an outer glow blending option to your text layer.

Outer Glow Blending Option Settings:

Blend Mode: Screen
Opacity: 50%
Color: 9ce500
Spread: 0%
Size: 5px

Step 24

Now apply a gradient overlay and curves adjustment layer. DO NOT create a clipping mask for these adjustment layers, as you want them to effect your entire composition.

Gradient Overlay Adjustment Layer Settings:

Gradient: Choose the default gradient ‘Violet, Green, Orange’
Opacity: 12%

Curves Adjustment Layer Settings:

Step 25

Finally, go to layer>flatten image. Select your entire canvas (option+a). Copy your flattened image, and then in your history palette undo your image flattening.

Paste your flattened image as a new top layer. Then go to filter>sharpen>unsharp mask. This will add a final highlight to your image, and really bring out the detail of your snake’s scales:

Unsharp Mask Settings:

Amount: 50%
Radius: 30.0 pixels
Threshold: 25 levels

At a first look of his profile, you will realize that you are not just in front of a normal design or illustrator because you are in having a unique experience that cannot be found in many illustrators.

When you visit Justin Maller’s profile, you can spend a lot of time watching his amazing Artwork and enjoy this great combination of colors and line that merge to form a wonderful balance in every piece of his artwork.

Justin does not only depend on illustrations in his Artwork; he has great ability to merge between illustrations, photo manipulation and different effects in one artwork and still maintain a deep unity in the style of the Artwork elements. While the amount of the illustrations vs. photos density varies from one Artwork to another, he can easily melt between each of them using the colors and lines.

Justin Maller is a freelance illustrator and Art director based in Melbourne, Australia. He has been creating Digital Art for over eight years, and has produced professionally in both a private and studio based capacity for the last three years. Justin had the pleasure of producing illustrations and Concept Arts for a diverse array of companies and publications worldwide, and enjoys a cordial collaborative relationship with several prestigious international design studios. Street Photography is defined as the photographs that cover the street activities and taken in public places. This type of photography includes taking photos of people, buildings, general elements and actions that takes place in the streets and squares.

In Street Photography, the most remarkable features that you can identify in all of the photographs are sharing the same amount of motion and it is live, which are inspired from the real life in the streets we see every day.

The photographers try to focus on different subjects in the street. Some photographers focus on the people walking or setting in the street; other artists like to focus on the cars and how they move fast creating amazing blur effects in the middle of the photo; and other photographers are more concern with the street elements such as the buildings, fountains, chairs and sidewalk areas.

The street is rich of inspiring ideas and creative scenes that every artist can identify and pinpoint on his photographs. Maybe, this is one of the reasons that make many people like the street photography. These photographs are touching us personally and this is the main reason we can relate to it. It touches our personal life and activities that we do on a daily basis.

Photoshop Tutorial | Urban Wasteland Photo Manipulation

Intro

In this Photoshop tutorial I am going to show you how to combine different photos to create an Urban Wasteland composition. We will do some background removal by masking images and then composite them together into our scene. We will use adjustment layers to manipulate the colors and hues of our image to achieve the dark and grungy final result. These techniques are essential for photo effects and photo manipulation when using Adobe Photoshop.

Download the PSD

Step 1

Create a new document. I chose 1000 x 707 px for this design. First download Autumn Road 6 and bring it into your newly created document. Re-size and position it.

Step 2

On this photo, the sky is ok, however I prefer Apocalyptic Sky. So let’s change it. First we want to mask out the sky. Choose the Autumn Road layer, click layer mask and start painting out the unwanted parts with black. The key to successful masking is to first use a large brush with 100% hardness to erase large areas, then use a smaller brush with zero hardness to erase the detailed parts. Here is the final result after masking.

Step 3

We are ready to add our new sky. Download Apocalyptic Sky, bring it out to Photoshop in a new layer placed under our road photo layer. Re-size and position our new sky.

Step 4

I prefer to adjust the colors and lighting after laying out the composition. Download Cityscape Stock, bring it to our composition and place it between the road layer and sky layer. As usual re-size and position it. Finally mask out the unwanted parts using a layer mask.

Step 5

Next we have our wrecked car. Download Marysville Ghost Town 2, and bring it into our Photoshop file. Place it on top of the layer stack, position and re-size it as usual. Finally, mask out unwanted parts.

Step 6

Now we are going to bring in the bunker. Download Coquina Fort and import it into our Photoshop composition on top of the layer stack. Re-size and position the bunker, then mask out the unwanted parts.

Our composition elements are now in place, and your image should look like this:

Step 7

First of all congratulations! There will be no masking (I know sometimes it gets really boring) after step 6. We will start adjusting the colors, lighting, shadows etc. to give our image a dark and grungy look. First add a levels adjustment layer to road layer with the following settings, making sure to clip it to the road layer):

Now let’s add a curves adjustment layer to our road, and again clip it to the road layer. Here are the settings:

Now it’s time to play with the sky. First let’s change the color balance. Add a color balance adjustment layer to sky and apply these settings.

And here is the final result after adjustment:

Next let’s differentiate the color balance. Select the layer mask of the Color Balance adjustment layer. Choose Filter –> Render –> Difference Clouds. This will ease the effect of color balance adjustment layer. Here is what I get after applying filter:

Our last step for the sky is to apply a curves adjustment layer and clip it to the sky layer. Here are the settings:

Now it’s time to make adjustments to the Cityscape layer. First of all it’s too bright. To change it, apply levels adjustment layer to this layer with the following settings (clip this to the Cityscape layer):

Now apply a curves adjustment layer to the Cityscape with the following settings (clip this to the Cityscape layer):

Now we will make some adjustments to the bunker. Start with adding a curves adjustment layer (clip to bunker layer). Here are the settings:

Now apply a levels adjustment layer (clip to bunker layer) with the following settings:

Now it’s time to play with our rusty car. It’s way too bright for our composition. Therefore we will start by adding a brightness/contrast adjustment layer to it (clip this to the car layer). Here are the settings:

Next apply a levels adjustment layer and clip it to our beloved car layer:

Lastly add a curves adjustment layer and clip it to our car layer, here are the settings;

Conclusion

And we are done. I generally add a gradient map or a warming filters to my manipulations, however for this one i like it better as-is. You can try and achieve different results by experimenting with the adjustment layer settings.

Intro: Photo manipulation is always a fun to work on. In this Photoshop tutorial we will be creating an antique vintage sci-fi spy movie poster. This tutorial will cover a few important topics like using Two Point Prospective, Analyzing and creating DOF (Depth Of Field), Coloring with reference to the original image and few more important basics of Photo Manipulation.

Step 1:

Create a new canvas in Photoshop with resolution of Width=3840, Height=2160px.

Step 2:

1) Now import the image of the city which we will be working on.

2) For this image we need to draw a two point prospective to match the prospective of the ‘city image’

-First take a building as reference on both sides and locate the vanishing points. Then complete the drawing of the prospective frame as shown using the Line Tool(U).

Step 3:

To create the flying effect for buildings, cut the buildings in the center as shown using the prospective lines as reference to get the perfect cut.

Step 4:

To create the base to the building select mask following the prospective and fill the selection with the colour #434142.

Step 5:

1)Now by using the Clone Stamp Tool(S) clone the sky to represent the sky behind the building which is being visible through the gap created in the building.

2) Similarly follow the steps 3,4,5 for the other buildings in the image as shown.

Step 6:

Now by using the prospective lines outline the boxes as shown to represent the flying geometrical blocks.

Step 7:

In this step we will be coloring the boxes matching the lighting in the image.

1)To make the job easy use the Eyedropper Tool(I) and select the colours on three sides of the first flying building to paint three sides of the box. i.e Paint the light source side with the colour #dbd4cc , side with #60686b and the bottom with colour #434142.

2)Similarly follow the above step to complete the coloring of the other blocks.

Step 8:

In this step we will create the shadow casting by the blocks on the buildings.

1)Naturally the shadow get smaller as the opaque surface move away from the casting surface, hence we need to draw two lines from the block as shown following the prospective to determine the height of the shadow ,then complete the mask for the shadow using the prospective lines and fill the selection with black colour.

2)Shadows have low opacity and blurred edges due to slight interference of light into the shadow.

-With the shadow layer selected reduce its Opacity to 56%. Then add a Gaussian Blur of Radius 6.3px from Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur.

3)Similarly create shadows for other blocks as shown.

Step 9:

In this step we will create the depth of field.

1)Usually the objects that are far from the focus from the lens appear blurred. Since the flying triangular pyramid is assumed to be far from the current scene hence we need to add a Gaussian Blur of Radius 2.2px to maintain the depth of field in the image.

2)Similarly add a Gaussian Blur of Radius 0.9 to the flying block 2.

Step 10:

Using the previous steps create a block very close to the scene as shown.

Step 11:

Now since the city layout is completed ,we now proceed to complete the poster.

-Open a new canvas with Width=2169 and Height=2412px. And import the image we previously created onto the canvas and place it as shown.

Step 12:

Now create a Black and white Adjustment layer on top of all the layers to turn the image into black and white.

Step 13:

In this step we will be adding the character to the poster.

1)Cut the image of the spy from it’s background and place it on the poster as shown.

2)Now hide all the layers and save only the spy in .PNG format.

Step 14:

During the late 70’s and 80’s the movie poster used to be designed in vector format. Hence in this step we will be using Adobe Illustrator for turning the spy into vector.

1)Import the image spy.PNG into Illustrator and select ‘Detailed Illustration’ from ‘Live Trace’ drop down list.

2)After selecting the Detailed Illustration option set its Threshold=74 and Min Area=4px to get the following effect.

3)Then save the spy vector in .EPS format.

Step 15:

1)Now import the spy.EPS into photoshop and place it exactly on the spy image as shown.

2)Now select the mask in shape of the spy by holding the Ctrl key and clicking on the thumbnail of the original spy layer. After the mask is selected create a new layer under the vector spy layer and fill the mask with white colour to get the following effect.

Step 16:

In this step we will be creating a tie for the spy which is being blowed backwards.

1)Using the Brush Tool(B) draw a rough sketch of the tie as shown.

2)Now by using the Pen Tool(P) select the mask in shape of the tie and fill the selection with red coloour.

3)Now create some shadows on the tie in a new layer as shown to generate the fold effect.

4)With the red tie layer selected goto Image>Adjustments>Hue/Saturation and set the Saturation Level=-30.

We had to do this because we are trying to create an old movie poster, so we need the colours to be desaturated.

Step 17:

In this step we are going to create an old and aged look to the poster.

1)Import the texture onto the poster we are creating and set its Blending Mode of the layer to Multiply and reduce the Opacity to 54%.

2) Similarly import another texture onto the poster and set its Blending Mode to Multiply and Opacity to 49%. Then using the Brightness/Contrast (Image>Adjustments>Brightness) increase the Brightness=77 and Contrast=29.

Step 18:

Using the Type Tool(T) with the Cortesia Font selected type the title ‘CITY SPY’ and arrange it as shown.

Step 19:

1) To create a retro look to the poster add a gradient with yellow and blue colours to the poster.

2)Now set the Blending Mode of the Gradient layer to Soft Light and reduce the Opacity to 33%.

Step 20:

Import the image of the wooden wall onto the canvas to represent the wall on which the poster is stuck.

Step 21:

1)Resize the poster using the Move Tool (V) to reveal some part of the wooden wall.

2)Create a slight shadow under the poster as shown to create the depth that the poster is really on the wall.

Step 22:

Using the Sticky Tape Brush add four tapes as shown to show that the tapes are holding the poster stuck on the wall.

Step 23:

Usually old and aged papers or posters doesn’t have good borders, hence we need to create rough and slightly torn edges to the poster.

1)Import the image of the Old paper with bad edges and place it on the poster as shown.

2)Then select the mask in the shape of the texture and cut the edges of the poster to get the required effect.

Digitize Scanned Paper Drawing Photoshop Tutorial

Converting a paper drawing to a digital artwork in Photoshop looks like an easy step but it is not. It is a tricky one that needs you to learn some tips to create an accurate digital version of your drawing, which you can use in many design tasks like converting pencil mockup to a digital version or put your ideas in computer to use it in your design. This Photoshop tutorial shows how to convert a paper drawing to a digital artwork in Photoshop using a scanned version of the paper art.

Before you continue reading this tutorial, make sure to check these tutorials as well:

Items needed:

Scanner [Epson scanner shown]
Photoshop [any version]
A drawing [Black and White]

Level of difficulty:

Step 1

First, pick out the drawing you want to use. For this one it will be a black and white drawing. If you want to do a colored drawing you’ll have to use a few different steps, so for this tutorial pick out a black and white one.

Step 2

As you can see, my drawing is far too big for my scanner. Most scanners can scan a little bit more than and 8.5in/11in sheet of paper. But don’t fear, it will turn out alright. We will have to scan it in to different scans but we will have a complete picture in the end.

Step 3

Boot up the software for the scanner. For this case the scanner I used is an Epson, but most scanners come with the same software functions. You will want to change the mode from “full auto mode” because it will make decisions for us that we don’t want. Go for the mode that has the most settings we can change.

Step 4

As seen (1) the setting I want is the “professional mode.” This will allow for greater customization to get the best scan. Then we will want to cahnge the exposure type (2) from a photo scan to a document. The photoscan will act as if it is scanning a photo but we aren’t doing that so we need it to be a document exposure. Then we will want to adjust the DPI resolution(3) “dpi” stands for “dots per inch” and this is important. The lower dpi means the lower quality your scan is going to be, but you don’t want the number to be too high either for it will make it too big of a file. 300 dpi is a good number for it is what most printers print at, but you can change it to meet what you want. Next we need to mess with some of the adjustments.

Step 5

Okay, now put your picture in the scanner as straight as you can, and put some books on it as well to make sure that the edges stay down as well. For you if you forget to have it pressed there will be large shadows on the edges where your picture goes outside of the scanning area that will be hard to work with later.

Step 6

Alright you will want to hit the “preview” button (1) so you can see what it looks like. It will just make a quick scan for you to see and it won’t save it. To make the final scan you will want to hit “scan” but not yet . Then you will want to adjust the levels/histogram.

Step 7

Depending on what you are wanting for your picture, you may want the scan to be lighter or darker than it actually is. That is where a levles/histogram adjusment helps. Those little triangles indicate the the brightness of the picture and you can slide them by just clicking and holding them. Move them to the right and the picture becomes darker, move them to the left and the picture becomes lighter. But remember, you don’t want the image to be too dark when you scan it because it will be harder to clean up. Then when you are ready you can close that window and scan the picture.

Step 8

Remember we had to scan the drawing on 2 different scans. Now open both of them in photoshop and make sure you can see both together in some way. You may want to open a new photoshop document with the right size for the entire image. Then just click on the layers and drag them into the document.

Step 9

As you can see now that we have both scans in the same photoshop document we have some of the same image scaned twice. This is a very good thing. Now we can match the images up like a puzzel piece. Make sure that when you put them together to not have the image change in rotation or scale because it could make it difficult to match them up. If you do scale or rotate them make a note of the exact number you do it so you can accuratly do the same process to both.

Step 10

One way to help you match them up is having the scan that is on the top layer a litte bit more transparent. You can find this setting at the top of the “layers” tool box. This will help you match them up easier. You may have to rotate or scale one of the layers to make it match, but don’t worry you’ll get it with a little patients. If you can make it past this part its all easier afterwards.

Step 11

Now you can see that once we matched them up there are some lines of where the scans were. Don’t worry we can fix that! Because we have some of the image scanned twice we can fix the lines by erasing the edges of the scan without having to worry about loosing any of the image. Just do enough to were you don’t have any difference between the two images. If there is too much difference you may have to rescan them and try again. Practice makes perfect.

Step 12

Alright, now that we have them matched and those scan lines gone we can merge the layers. “ctrl/cmd+E” is the shortcut while selecting the top layer it will merge to the bottom layer. But now the image is far too light we need to make the lines darker.

Step 13

One way of doing it is by duplicating layer a few times with the shortcut “ctrl/cmd+J”. When you do this you need to have the copy’s layer style changed from “normal” to “multiply” which means that all the white will be completely transparent and all the drawing will only be slightly transparent, making the original drawing darker. You can see the layer styles at the top of the layer tool box in drop-town tab. You can do this multipul times to get the right strength you need.

Step 14

After you received the right amount od strength you can merge the layers. But we aren’t finished yet.

Step 15

Look at the circled areas, we have som artifacts [unwanted pixels leftover from scanning]. We will have to get rid of those.

Step 16

Carefully use the eraser on those areas, don’t forget to adjust your size and edge hardness with right clicking.

Step 17

Creating the Eerie Photo-Manipulation ‘Captive’

Files Used

All photos in this tutorial were taken by the author herself. Aside from the photo below:

Girl Photo

Step 1 – Start with the background layer

We start off by pasting the dungeon image into the background layer. Name this layer ‘Background’.

Step 2 – Add the image of the girl

Paste the image of the girl into a new layer and name it ‘Main’. To remove the background of this image we will select the Polygonal Lasso tool. Begin clicking around the shape of the girl carefully. Delete the unwanted background of the image – as below. Alternatively you could use a clipping mask to remove the white background here.

Next, set the blending mode for the layer ‘Main’ to Luminosity. Move the image to give the impression that the girl is actually inside the dungeon.

Now, select the Rectangular Marquee tool and set the feather to 3px. Now trim the image as the example below shows.

Step 3 – Add Texture

Now go to Images > Duplicate and duplicate the Main layer and name it layer ‘Lightener’. Place this layer directly below the ‘Main’ layer. On this layer go to Filter > Artistic > Poster Edges. Set the Poster Edges settings as below

Step 4 – Darken image

Next duplicate the Main layer again but this time name it ‘Darkness’. On this layer go to Image > Adjustments > Curves. Adjust the darkness of the Curves as the image below illustrates:

The will darken the girl image, as below.

Step 5 – Darken Girl

Next, create a new layer and ensure the foreground colour of the palette is set to black. Now use the Gradient tool to darken the right side of the girl, as below. Name this layer ‘Right hair fade’.

Now select the Eraser tool and set the size to 70px. Erase any part of the gradient that is outside the area of the girl, as below.

Step 6 – Whiten Eye

Create a new layer and name it ‘White eye’. On this layer use the Polygonal Lasso tool and set the feather to 1px. Then click around the shape of eye – as shown below.

Use the Paint bucket tool to fill this selection with white. Set the Opacity of this layer to 50%.

Step 7 – Tear stains

Start by creating a new layer and name it ‘Black eye shadow’. Select the Brush tool and set to soft round brush, size to 6px. With the Brush tool roughly draw the tear stains on the face – as below.

On this layer select Filter > Blur > Blur More. Set the Opacity of this layer to 35%.

On a new layer, select the Brush tool again. This time choose the watercolour soft round tip brush and set the brush size to 5px. Now with the brush draw along the line of the bottom eye lid as below.

Step 8 – Dirt

Create a new layer and name it ‘Dirt’. To create the dirt look on the girls face, hand and arm use the Brush tool. Set the brush type to spatter and the brush size to 55px. With the brush tool begin to randomly dot the girls face, hand and arm – as below.

On this layer select the Blur tool. Choose a brush soft round brush and set the brush size to 120px. Now, begin to randomly blur the brush strokes. Repeat this step a few more times until the desired effect is gotten.

Step 9 – Manipulation of hand

Create a new layer and name it ‘Fingers fill’. Next we need to remove the strands of hair from the girls fingers. To do this select the Brush tool, set the size to 13px and choose a soft round brush. Now, select the Eyedropper tool to select the replacement colour from the relevant finger area.

With the brush begin to trace over the light area of the hair strands – as below. Change the colour of the brush as you fill in the colour to ensure the best finish.

On this layer we now need to remove the long finger nails. Choose the Eraser tool and erase the long nails as below.

Next we need to select the soft round brush to darken the finger tips. To do this choose the Eyedropper tool to select the replacement colour from the relevant finger areas – as below.

Now with the soft round brush3 3, brush size 13px, begin to cover over the areas of light as below. Change the colour of the brush as you fill in the colour to ensure the best finish.

Step 10 – Dirty finger nails

The nails on the hand need to be dirtied. To achieve this choose a soft round brush and set the size to 3px. On a new layer, draw an outline around the thumbnail with the brush. On this layer select Filter > Blur > Blur.

Repeat this step on the other nails of the girl’s hand.

Step 11 – Creating Chains

To create the chains on the girls wrist we must first create a new layer. Name this layer ‘Chains’. Now, paste the image of the chains into this layer. Because the chains image is on a white background we must remove the white. To do this select the Polygonal Lasso tool and click around the shape of chains in the image. Delete the unwanted background of the image – as below.

Once you have removed the white background from the image we need to add a Drop shadow. To do this go to Layer > Layer Style > Drop Shadow. Set the drop shadow settings as below

Step 12 – Add Darkness

On a new layer, select the Polygonal Lasso tool and set the feather to 20px. Next draw a triangle with the polygonal lasso tool as below.

Now, use the linear gradient tool to add shade as below. Name this layer ‘Darkness’.

Step 13 – Add Light

Next, create a new layer and name it ‘Light’. As per the previous step, select the Polygonal Lasso tool and set the feather to 20px. Next draw a triangle with the Polygonal Lasso tool and select white as the foreground palette colour. Now, use the Linear Gradient tool to add a white gradient as below.

Set the opacity of the image to 50%. Now we need to tailor the layer named ‘Light’ so that fits around the girl in the image. We do this by selecting the Eraser tool. Set the size of the eraser tool to approx. 200px. Now begin to eraser the white gradient overlaying the girl – as below.

Next merge the Darkness layer with the Light layer. Ensure this layer is named ‘Light’.

Step 14 – Add atmospheric shade

Create a new layer and name it ‘Shade’. Set the foreground colour of the palette to black. Choose the Radial Gradient tool and add shade to the top right hand corner of the image – as below.

On the same layer, add shade again but this time to the bottom right hand corner of the image.

Step 15 – Creating jail bars

Next, you need to add the jail bars to the window. Firstly, create a new layer and ensure the foreground color of the palette is black. Then select the Reflected Gradient tool and create a bar in the centre of the image -as illustrated.

On the same layer, add a Liner gradient to the bottom foreground – as below. Name this layer ‘Bars’.

And We’re Done!

I am currently a freelance designer living in Chicago IL. About a year ago I started my own design company, 2046 Design. While a lot of my work involves photo-manipulation for various design firms and clients I am always trying out new styles. Over the past year or so I have started to experiment a lot more with minimalism and poster design. Design History: Photo Manipulation Pioneer John Heartfield

John Heartfield (1891-1968) was a pioneer in photo manipulation. Born Helmut Herzfeld, he changed his name as a protest against anti-English sentiment in Germany between the World Wars. Heartfield was one of the first artists to use photomontage, skillfully manipulating photographs to vicously satirize the brutality of the Nazi regime. This was decades before Photoshop, so he did them all by hand, making his artwork all the more impressive. His best known work is “Hurrah! The Butter is all gone!”, showing a family attempting to eat various metal items, decrying how war takes food away from the people.His artwork stands as an example of Photoshopping before Photoshop, and continues to inspire people to resist oppression and violence.

30 Cool Large Photo Background Website Designs

Web design is taking a plunge into photography and digital arts. Making large photos as a background is getting trendy. Hence, putting up a catchy photo never misses to attract the audience attention. It says a lot about the website as well as the developers. It also helps the designer create aura, a color palette and signify the substance and objective of a website.

But of course the texts, search engines and web contents are the most essential parts to consider for web designing. The key is typography control. It does require complex photo manipulation, and because resizing the image based on the browser size is not that easy, using exceptional CSS or, in some cases, Flash to get everything looking at their best.

I have compiled examples of cool large photo background website designs, hopefully to inspire you!

This layout looks fashionable and trendy. The photo background showcases their products at the same time it makes the page look nice.

By the background itself, golf enthusiasts and athletes get excited of what this site could offer.

This layout showcases the cozy feel of the golf club. The scenic view on the background tempts the audience to come over and enjoy the amenities.

The strong background describes much about the site’s foundation and the kind of service they offer.

As cool as the site is, this background is pretty catchy and innovative.

This example illustrates a lot about the developers of the site. Their creativity and uniqueness oozes out from this catchy background.

This one is simple yet bold. Gives you that strong impression about the site. The great color combination of color schemes and customized templates compliments everything.

Basically, the photo background introduces who the site is about and what it contains. This one has really cool templates and concept.

This is a perfect example of simplicity with a kick. It is very brilliant how the object in the image worked well with the layout.

Landscape photos are challenging because you need to match it with the right amount of color and design. This example pulled it off by putting smaller images in the middle that would compliment the background.

Talking about being minimalist, this design makes the background completely pop out. They showcase their product and make it the center of attention without losing the texts on the side.

This is a tricky landscape background, applied with a good blend of color scheme, templates and positioning.

25. Travis and Presley

A collage photo effect like this is quirky. You need to compose the layout with great color matching and positioning so that it wont look messy and over crowded.

This one is really striking. The angle of the photo background is remarkable & gave the layout a good view.

27. Orca Bay Seafoods

This is a great example of adding flash to the background. It is very customized and unique.

Another one of those good flash backgrounds. This one however, is a very edgy serious aura.

I like this one because the photo background tells a story which makes it interesting. Put together with great color scheme and positioning of templates it looks really good.

30. Mellow Mushroom

I always save the best for last. For me, this is what I found very impressive so far. It’s cutting edge flash effects and the background photo compliments each other. Worked even better because of the color scheme.

As you can see from the following examples, website designs with large photo backgrounds are very appealing to the viewers’ eyes. It makes it unique and interesting. Especially the ones with additional flash effects. A great composition of photography, flash, and exceptional CSS skills will get you a very unique layout that will surely make your website standout.
