Pixel art, where images are created and edited at the pixel level, seems to be the trademark for old-school computer games rather than the sophisticated visual graphics of contemporary games. Thanks to advanced technology, the simplicity of pixelated images that was prominent during the early days of computer technology may be irrelevant to most of us today where sharper graphics can be created. Still, others may be jaded by all the complex graphics we take for granted today and instead adore the retro feel that pixel art brings.

For starters, pixel art are typically categorized into isometric and non-isometric type. Isometric pixel art is created in a near-isometric dimetric projection (i.e. about 30 degrees angle from horizontal), as seen in some old games where they provide a 3D view of scenes. Non-isometric pixel art refers to those that are not isometric, for example, views from top, side, front, bottom or perspective views. Don’t worry, we’ve separated these two categories to provide you with a better understanding of the two kinds of pixel art.

Taking inspiration from the read tables that are almost all the time covered with the colorful magazines, designer Roderick Vos created a beautiful Vanity table. Panasonic Real Pro Massage Chair

Massage chairs have come a long way from the back-pinching, coin-operated monstrosities in most shopping malls, and the Panasonic Real Pro Massage Chair ($5,500) is a great example. It features a unique trunk rotation and pelvic tilt function that combines a large seat airbag with a smaller one to grasp and gently twist the seat and thigh area, the Junetsu massage technique that uses one-second circular thumb movements to quickly loosen up tight muscles. MSI Projector PC

MSI is sure in a conceptual mood at this year’s the CES, and one of the odder combinations was this Projector PC. The unit pumps HD video onto a wall at about the quality of a mini projector (though certainly a step above a pico), but for convenience’s sake it has a PC and DVD drive built right in. MSI plans to pair it with a wireless mouse and keyboard for living room use, but we’re still not sure we see a huge advantage over plugging a nettop into a projector — outside of the novelty factor, of course. Microsoft Arc Keyboard

Well, it looks like Microsoft still has a bit more stuff in store for CES that didn’t slip out ahead of its big keynote, with it now announcing its new Arc Keyboard that will exclusive to Best Buy (at least initially). Like its Arc Mouse, this one is slim and high on style, and relatively light on any extraneous features, although you will get a 2.4GHz wireless receiver that can be tucked away in the keyboard, and at least a few extra function keys. Look for this one to be available February 21st for $59.95. (via Engadget)

Asus ROG G73jh Gaming Notebook

Processing comes in the form of an Intel Core i7 processor, and graphics is provided by an ATI Radeon HD 5870 GPU which is capabale of DirectX 11. Other specifications include up to 1TB of hard drive space, and up to 8GB of RAM, plus support for EAX 4.0 and CMSS 3D surround sound, and it features a 17.3 inch display which is capable of full HD (1080p) in a 1920 x 1080 resolution. This is a personal project that I’ve been planning for quite some time, and will be part of my demo-reel. Being aware of the amount of work ahead of me, the hours spent, and considering this will last for only a few seconds on the video, I decided to go ahead and model with all there is to it, starting on concepts, then on a simple but functional Basemesh, refining it on ZBrush, Multipass rendering and post-production in Photoshop.

It is all part of the pipeline on character development, and there are many other steps in Maya that weren’t necessary on this case, such as rigging for animating the model as a digital puppet, blend shapes that form the face expressions, and all the animation process with timeline, manipulation of animation curves, trax, etc. After going through all these steps, there’s still rendering, post production, sound editing, final edition, etc.

This is such a demanding, long lasting and complex process, that animation studios and producers have groups of professionals, specially trained for each part of the process, and a 30 second TV ad can easily take 12 hours – or more – a day of a hard working staff, for about a couple of months.

Heavy stuff, but extremely gratifying, and considering the investment on mastering all techniques involved, this kind of job is often well payed.

Let’s get to the point, Obama’s making of.

Step 1

It all starts on the model sheet, a basic planning on how the figure will be modeled, usually drawn from the front and one side.

Step 2

Over the model sheets I started modeling the basemesh, using ZSpheres on ZBrush.

Step 3

During the mesh edition in Modo, even though I liked the results on the body, I still was not satisfied with the head.

Step 4

I decided to make another model sheet, more on the caricature side, a bit exaggerated, exploring to a higher extent the character features, trying to avoid the trap that exists halfway between realistic and cartoony styles.

Step 5

Following the new drawing, I repositioned the vertices on the low poly mesh, and kept on modeling the skin with pores and expression marks, based on reference photos.

Step 6

With the modeling finished, I used the polygonal painting feature on ZBrush, as if I was painting straight on clay, instead of creating a bitmap texture, that would then require UVs, displacement and bump maps, in a more elaborate process, usually required in an animation, but unnecessary on this case, because the final rendering is done straight on ZBrush, using a multi-pass rendering technique. This kind of rendering has no SSS – Sub Surface Scattering – that is the natural translucency on human flesh and semi opaque objects, effect created with the use of more powerful rendering engines, such as Mental Ray, VRay and others, that would eventually bring more realism to the figure, but for this personal project the result fulfilled my expectations.

I may eventually go through the other steps, and do a short animation with this Obama model, and that’s the reason why I took the time to modeling the hands, and keeping in mind that all the work done this far may be deformed and reused in other characters, saving some time and handwork in the future.

Many different render passes are generated on the same position, edited in Photoshop, each one with its own blend mode and transparency, exploring as much as possible the effects of light, shadow, volumetry and depth of field, as it would be done in a photographic studio.

One good way to look at the past and the present at the same time is to take a photo holding an old photo of the same location. It’s amazing to see the past being held on top of the present and see that a lot of things remain the same. Check this out and try it yourself.

It’s the end of the year and for the last tutorial of 2009 I will show you how to create a poster inspired by the amazing work of Simon Page, especially those beautiful posters for the International Year of Astronomy. I created this design first for the Abduzeedo 3rd Anniversary poster but I changed it a little bit for this Photoshop tutorial.

So I will show you how to create a minimalistic design in Photoshop playing with stock photos, blend modes and filters. We will also use a paper texture to give a nice retro feel to our design.

Step 1

Open Photoshop and create a new document. I’m using for this tutorial 900×1440 pixels for the size. Fill the background layer with black and then go to Edit>Transform>Scale. Resize the background layer like the image below.

Step 2

Go to Layer>Layer Style>Color Overlay. Select brown for the color, the one I used is #37281e

Step 3

After the Color Overlay, select Stroke. Use 4 pixels for the Size, Inside for the Position, Color Dodge for the Blend Mode and White for the Color.

Step 4

Add another layer beneath the brown layer and fill it with beige, the one I used is #edd3aa.

Step 5

Let’s import a photo of a ladder. The one I used is courtesy of Shutterstock and you can get it at http://www.shutterstock.com/pic-39923698/stock-photo-ladder-leading-up-t…

Step 6

Select the image layer and go to Image>Adjustments>Hue and Saturation. Reduce the Hue to -170 and leave the other values the same.

Step 7

Still with the image layer selected go to Image>Adjustments>Levels. Increase the black input to 87, the middle input to 0.93. Also for the Output Leves use 0 and 130.

Step 8

Go to Layer>New Adjustment Layer>Hue and Saturation. This adjustment layer has to be on top of the other layers, the ladder and the background. Increase the Lightness to 12.

Step 9

Let’s use another stock image, this time of a starfield with a nebula. The one I used is courtesy of Shutterstock and you can get it at http://www.shutterstock.com/pic-1611518/stock-photo-space-heart.html

Step 10

With the Polygonal Lasso Tool (L) create a marquee selection of the yellow sky. After that with the stars image selected go to Layer>Layer Mask>Reveal Selection.

Step 11

Go to Image>Adjustments>Hue and Saturation. Reduce the Hue to 30, the Saturation to 30 and increase the Lightness to 13. Also select Colorize. Use the image below for reference.

Step 12

Now let’s add some text. I added 2010 using Helvetica Neue Bold, 107pt using brown (9e7539) for the color. Below the 2010 I added "Happy New Year" using Helvetica Neue Light, 33pt with the same brown. At the bottom of the page I added a quote by Paulo Coelho using Helvetica Neue Regular, 16pt. Use the image below for reference.

Step 13

Add a new layer on top of the others and fill it with white. Then go to Filter>Render>Lighting Effects. For the Style select RGB lights and leave the other values the same.

Step 14

Go to Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur. Use 120 pixels for the Radius.

Step 15

Reduce the Opacity of the layer to 30% and also go to Edit>Transform>Rotate. Rotate the image so the red will be at the bottom. After that go to Image>Adjustments>Levels. Increase the Black input to 70.

Step 16

Let’s use another stock photo, now a paper texture. Once again the one I used was courtesy of Shutterstock and can be found at http://www.shutterstock.com/pic-20845342/stock-photo-old-yellow-paper-ba…

Step 17

Change the Blend Mode of the paper texture to Multiply. This layer will be on top of the others.

Step 18

Go again to Layer>New Adjustment Layer>Hue and Saturation. This adjustment layer will be on top of the other layers. Reduce the Saturation to -32 and increase the Lightness to +28.

Conclusion

In this tutorial we played only with Blend Modes, masks, and basic filters. The idea was to create something minimalistic but beautiful and with a retro feel. It’ll also make for a really cool New Year’s card!

Details are still fuzzy at best, but word on the street has it that ASUS is preparing to unveil a new mobile gaming rig in short order. In addition to that, the rumored GPU will be a potent ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5730, which is likely to feature DDR3 memory (via Engadget)

Ivete Sangalo is a Brazilian singer that, at the time of writing this post, has only 514,125 followers. She only tweets in Portuguese, she sings in Portuguese and she is not an Hollywood star, far from it. How could this singer become “Twitter User of the Year” according to Mashable’s readers? The answer lies in Brazil and in the way Ivete Sangalo is using Twitter.

According to a Ibope - Nielsen Online study, Brazilians are spending more time on Twitter than any other nation in the world and Brazil, is where Twitter is seeing the biggest penetration rate (15% in July against 10,6% the USA in the same period). There are an estimated 5 million Brazilians using Twitter on a regular basis: united by their language one can truly say that Twitter Brazil is a world apart except when its users decided to show their aggregated power to the rest of the world.

Back in June, @aplusk was watching  the soccer game  U.S.A vs Brazil and, due to some tweets he made ended up feeling the power/wrath of Brazil on his timeline. In a matter hours #chupa was a trending topic. You can read here the full account of this episode that showed what can happen when one wired nation comes together around a cause. Some online searches  and a few contacts in Brazil helped me confirm what I suspected all along: Brazilian Twitter users decided to make Ivete Sangalo “Twitter User of the Year”, “Best Musical Artist to Follow” and “Best Celebrity to Follow” and managed to do so. By using a system of DM messaging, online forums, open calls for voting and with the support of online news media sites in Brazil, Ivete Sangalo could not loose. Why? Brazil only had one candidate while other countries, specially the US, had more than one. Because she had a whole wired nation supporting her united by her music, country and language and because Ivete Sangalo knows how to use Twitter: she engages, makes Twitter based Treasure Hunts and other games, promotes her shows and gives exclusive news to her followers. Ivete Sangalo is what one can call a power woman and a power twitter user.

I don’t know what impact the 3 awards will bring to Ivete Sangalo’s career, if any. It was interesting to read her timeline on the day that the awards were announced: she tweeted “WE won”, said “Obrigado” to her followers for getting her the award but she was more focused on her latest concert and giving feedback about it. Apparently, and according to her Twitter stream, she only realized 24h later that she had won the 3 awards, but by then she was more excited announcing a show with Beyoncé in São Paulo.

Vanishing point photography is everywhere—most people don’t even know it exists, but if you know about perspective you provably know what we are talking about. This technique started being used many years ago on the drawings of such artists as Donatello, and now can be seen in many photographies as you can see in this amazing selection of great vanishing point photography.

Vanishing Point

A vanishing point is a point in a perspective drawing to which parallel lines not perpendicular to the image plane appear to converge. The number and placement of the vanishing points determines which perspective technique is being used. The concept was first used by Renaissance artists such as Donatello and Masaccio.

Vanishing points can also refer to the point in the distance where the two verges of a road appear to converge. This is often used to help assess the upcoming curves in the road; to judge the radius and therefore the entry speed and optimum line. If the vanishing point moves towards you or to your sides, the curve is tightening. If the vanishing point moves away from you or comes to center, the curve is straightening.
