I stumbled across this simple yet iconic packaging in Switzerland, and although it looks quite Swiss, closer inspection led me to a Spanish company, Chocolate Organiko. They’ve got a really robust portfolio of chocolates with really graphic packaging execution. I really like the use of colour and tension within the typography.

“The XXXX Summer Bright Lager brand evolved from an innovation program designed to establish a new brand within the full strength low-carbohydrate Australian market. The coastal attitude and relaxed style of the identity and packaging has been inspired by the authenticity of the XXXX Trademark. XXXX has a strong affiliation with Summer in Australia and what better way to celebrate Australian lifestyle than a beer brewed specifically for a hot climate and an energised beach culture.

The design is original and hand illustrated, inspired by Australian beach, and beach culture aesthetic – informal, warm and unconventional. True to the XXXX values and approach to life, the identity narrative brings to life a positive reflection of life –  playing under the great Australian sun.

The technical merits of the packaging feature a bottle with a high-build textured varnish (representative of sand) on a pressure sensitive label.”

“The Kirin brand was re-launched in the Australian market in late 2007 and has been remarkably successful. The packaging alone has supported significant growth with no above-the-line support and limited below-the-line communication.

The packaging outcomes marked the adoption of clear pressure sensitive labeling techniques to the Lion Nathan business and the approach has been used as a milestone outcome within the business. Inspired by the simplicity, purity and Japanese craftsmanship, the identity and packaging have been created using traditional Japanese methods. This is also a reflection of the ‘first press’ beer style which uses a pure filtration process to extract the best of the brew. The Kanji (Japanese characters) and ‘brush-stroke’ calligraphy have been created by an authentic Japanese calligrapher and artist are sympathetic to Japanese traditions and meet exacting standards for approval by the Kirin Holding company. 

All packaging components used the highest levels of production standards available including a single UV varnish with high-build raise on the bottle with a foil neck, a UV varnish with emboss on the 6 pack and a spot UV varnish on the carton.”

B&B Studio have created the new identity and packaging for AussieMite, a yeast extract from Australia. They have created the identity, packaging expression, stationery, right through to it’s online presence:

“B&B was tasked with creating a more premium look and feel for AussieMite, ‘All we had to keep was the name’, says Creative Partner Shaun Bowen. ‘We built on the heritage of the brand and the naturalness of the product. The aim was to create a distinct and premium brand identity to take AussieMite to the next level and set it apart from the rest of the category’.

The product is a natural yeast extract made from premium GM free ingredients, sourced from responsible farming practices.

AussieMite is due to be relaunched in Australia early this year, with plans to launch in the UK later this year.”

“This packaging was done on a limited budget for a husband and wife making maple syrup the old fashioned way, over a wood fire, in rural Virginia. The bottle was off the shelf and the seal was designed to fit all of the information they wanted to communicate in a single mark, allowing flexibility for labels and stamps to be used on various materials. The color of the syrup illuminates the negative space, and the clean typography adds a quality that make their neighbors envious, while still maintaining some of that back woods charm.”

“This romantic packaging is the first foray into fine fragrance for LaSenza, an international lingerie retailer. Lace floral pattern was hand-drawn and enhanced by embossing and varnish techniques on the carton. The spherical bottle pushed boundaries for decoration techniques on glass to achieve a 360-degree overall seamless wrapping with the lace pattern. The vintage style atomizer adds an ultra-feminine feel.”

Bull Run Roasting Company of Minneapolis had Jeff Holmberg from Holmberg Design designed the new coffee packaging strategy for their general line of coffee.  Hand stamping onto a 3 color preprinted kraft bag “shell” allowed for diverse product variations and conveyed their value of hands on.  Similar touches can be found across their their website and the new Reserve Collection Coffee Packaging.”

“Objective: The packaging for Vonu Beer was developed as the core component of the brand identity. Vonu Beer is a premium beer, brewed and sold exclusively in the Fiji Islands. The target market are the traditional premium beer buyers, which in Fiji equates to the transient tourist market in bars and resorts, and ex-pats.

Solution: We created a packaging system that combines traditional elements of premium beer architecture with a distinctive “island style”. Clean white with gold foils, combined with uncoated board and rough, hand rendered typography helps define the brand personality of Vonu – fun-loving, relaxed and laid back.  The brand story is expanded on the packs with a map showing the location of the brewery, reinforcing the message that is authentically Fijian.”

“Original Beans creates some of
the finest chocolates in the world with carefully selected rare beans
and three-day conches, all the while practicing impressive efforts of
sustainability. One bar plants one tree—each bar comes with a green
ticket providing a url that tracks in real time where reforestation
efforts are taking place. With all the foils, metallic inks and
embossing you would never guess that this special box was produced in a
facility that uses 100% wind power.”

Packaging for organic Nudo Olive Oil by Mibo Studio:

 ”All our flavoured olive oils are
flavoured or infused using real citrus fruit or dried chillies, and we only
purchase olive oil from our little local cooperative to support the artisanal
farmers around our grove near Loro Piceno (Le Marche, Italy).

Jason and Cathy, who started Nudo, are
fortunate enough to have a very talented sister, Madeleine Rogers.  A few
years ago Madeleine founded a design studio, Mibo, and she
has been doing all Nudo’s packaging designs since the company started in
2005.”

“This is one of my projects, packaging and branding for a candybar.   The project was to create a candybar that would be marketable to mainly women 30 – 35 and compete against Dove, Toblerone, or imported candies. The name Xocolatl is derived from an ancient Nahuatl word for chocolate.”

 A unique packaging concept from 94Wines:

“94Wines is recognizable, contemporary and a high quality wine. Every
wine has its unique color and number, through which the wine drinker
can easily come to the right choice. The different numbers represent
the variety of tastes that are all featured by a high quality. If you
don’t know which wine to buy, no problem! Just take the WIneID test and
after six short questions you will discover which numbers will fit you
most.”

Green & Black’s, (whose chocolate packaging has been featured more than once on the dieline) has done a modest packaging refresh.

They’ve reversed the brown and accent color areas of the packs so that what was once mainly brown with an accent color is now the other way round.

To promote the more color-dominant packaging, they’ve commissioned Peter Blake to make this artwork of their new packaging in a mosaic-like arrangement. (They’re also holding a contest for a additional mosaic designs.)

No stranger to consumer packaged goods, Blake has also done work for Coca Cola, Lucky Brand, Cains Beer and others. As one of the original British Pop Artists, of course, he also draws on packaging in his work for the “fine art” market.

"Wrap rage is real," said Dr. Nadia Shouraboura, vice president of Global Fulfillment for Amazon. "We launched packaging feedback and we were surprised by the customer participation and response world-wide. Our customers told us they want packaging that is easier to open, and is free of wire ties and impenetrable plastic clamshells."

"We are launching the certification program to share customer feedback with manufacturers and provide an easy way for manufacturers to modify their packaging to make it Frustration-Free. We want to give customers the best possible experience from the time the order is placed, to when they remove the items from the packaging."

Manufacturers that want to get their packaging Certified Frustration-Free can submit their packaging to Amazon’s team of engineers for free. The team will analyze the packaging and determine if it needs modifications. Manufacturers that become certified can then use the "Certified Frustration-Free" logo on their packaging.

Amazon said it has extended its Frustration-Free Packaging certification program to Germany, France, Japan and the United Kingdom.

Company has just redesigned the packaging and brand identity system for
its entire portfolio of more than 100 juice and juice drink brands available in
145 countries worldwide. This includes Minute Maid here in the United States:

"The packaging redesign, available on store shelves in the
U.S. beginning this month, is one of the largest branding efforts undertaken in
the history of the Coca-Cola Company. The new system establishes a common look
and feel that brings continuity to Coca-Cola’s extensive juice offerings, is
scalable to multiple brands and product lines, and improves the consumers’
experience at retail. The new packaging takes on the best known qualities of
the Minute Maid brand including the black rectangle and white logotype
lettering."

Global Juice Packaging
Backgrounder

·       The Coca-Cola
Company has developed a new, flexible packaging design system for key brands in
its global juice family of beverages that unites multiple juice brands and
categories under one scalable, common identity and packaging framework.

·       Consistent
packaging guidelines and readily available assets are available on an internal,
web-based tool called “Design Machine,” which allows local markets to roll out packaging
quickly and efficiently while also minimizing costs.

·       Consumers
in the United States will be the first to see packaging changes on store
shelves in November 2009. The new packaging will be rolled out to Coca-Cola’s
largest juice brands worldwide over the next year.

·       The
strategic direction for the new visual identity system was developed internally
at The Coca-Cola Company.  Execution
of the designs was created in partnership with Minneapolis-based firm Duffy
& Partners as well as CMA Brand Presence of Houston.

Design Concepts

·       The
iconic Minute Maid logo – the classic black logo with white logotype lettering
– is the core element of the new visual identity system.

·       Rounded
edges on the new logo give it a contemporary look without detracting from the
Minute Maid logo’s historic appeal.

·       A new green
horizon mark above the logo serves as a canopy, connecting the brand to nature
and the fruit-producing earth.

·       Designers
studied consumer behavior in the supermarket produce aisle and how fruit
vendors displayed their fruit at local markets to develop visual cues for the
new juice packaging. 

·       The
packaging creates a unified look on shelf when packaging is placed side-by-side
forming an interlocking visual of whole fruit.  This evokes the imagery of whole fruit as it might be
displayed in a produce aisle or farmers market. 

·       Sliced
fruit, the hero image on all packaging, was arranged to show freshness and to call
to mind feelings of genuine happiness and enjoyment.

The contemporary packaging reflects the edginess of the brand and
literally makes RAW raw. It expresses a definitive look and feel of
'vibrant living' through a palate of rich colours and bold expressive
typography. The tone of voice captures the energy, vitality and
packed-with-as-much-goodness, as there can possibly be in one product
sentiment. It is as real as it is raw. The design has been translated
across 15 SKUS, from crisp-breads to chocolates.

Natalie Chung, Creative Director Pearlfisher, comments, "RAW is an
interesting brand with a concept that has allowed the designers to
create a dynamic range of packaging that really redefines the category,
creating something unique, rather than borrowing aesthetic cues from
other categories. RAW HEALTH now becomes the benchmark for raw."

HEALTH brand has been received extremely well by our customers and will
be available in health food stores throughout the UK and Ireland.
Pearlfisher really got beneath the skin of RAW and provided us with a

The first real customer experience we have when we get a new product is the package. Of course you might say that with the internet we can buy online and see the product before buying it, I know I get it, but the package design is a very inportant part of the customer experience. The unboxing process is exciting, Apple has shown us that it really matters, and whe have been seeing more and more companies following that wagon.

In this post I decided to look for really cool package designs, but not randomly or super famous pacakges such as the awesome Apple boxes. Therefore, I will list only dark package designs. Some could be described as product designs, such as the "Salt&Pepper Cell", but they are so cool that deserved a spot in the list.

Steve Jobs has always been fascinated by packaging, believing the unboxing routine to be a crucial part of the customer experience. All of Jobs’s products have been carefully packaged going back to the original Mac in 1984. Jobs believes unpacking a product is a great way to introduce unfamiliar technology to the consumer — they explore the components as they unbox them. – Cultofmac.com

Being a child of the eighties I have fond memories of cassettes and I have created these limited edition badge sets as a reminder of this past format. There is currently 12 different cassette types by some of the mainstream tape manufacturers that I remember having in my childhood. Each set consists of 6, 25mm button badges which are created as circular crops of the actual cassette artwork. The importance of package design! People today pay a lot more attention to the brands they buy in order to get better value. Brand loyalty is on the decline and customers are finding it less of a struggle to leave one brand for another that seems to be offering more to them. A lot of the value of a brand seems to relate to packaging so it is vital that companies invest in this effectively.

What do we mean by value?

Value isn’t always just abort price. For some customers the cost of things is very important, but there are also more varied ideas about what constitutes value. Consumers want to know how a brand or product will improve their life or make a part of their life easier to manage. They want to know how the product will make them feel if they purchase it. The decision will still be influenced by price, but other abstract factors will also be considered in the purchase. If a company wishes to appeal to these other factors associated with value then they will need to appeal to the customer’s emotions.

A good example of this can be seen with Apple and how they use packaging to appeal to their customers.  It isn’t just the technology that makes the iPhone and iPods so desired. There has also been a lot of effort around design to create something that looks elegant yet simple to use; these two values really resonate with customers and this design is recreated in the packaging surrounding the products as well with great success. The packaging design adds to the value of the product and when opening the product the customer really gets the sense that they are opening something special.

There are far cheaper products available than Apple so if the main concern was price then people would go with these. It is the innovation and design that attracts the Apple customer. Apple understands what they need to do to make their customer happy.

Reflect the positive qualities of your brand in your packaging and you will get the consumer’s attention

The current move to larger supermarkets and more self-service means that the customer needs to rely on themselves more and more when it comes to making purchases. This means that packaging has to really catch the consumer’s eye and only has a limited amount of time to get your brand’s message across. It needs to demonstrate value and stand out from similar products. The packaging needs to be honest and reflect the qualities of the brand if it is to be the most effective.

You need to demonstrate in the packaging what it is that is going to benefit the person’s quality of life. Will it mean that the customer has more comfort, more enjoyment, or more time? Your packaging should answer these questions.

Burgopak has been awarded Design Company of the Year at the prestigious 2009 UK Packaging Awards. Competing against leading companies in the packaging and design sector, the prize was awarded by a panel of top independent judges.

Ecolean is a new packaging alternative dubbed as "A Lighter Approach to Packaging". 

"Lightweight packaging is our answer to the demands of the liquid food industry and consumers asking for modern and clever packages. By using a minimal amount of raw material we create a lightweight package which combines low environmental impact with consumer convenience. Saving resources is saving the environment.  Yes, you read that right. This packaging was made out of dyed snail excrements, and it is designed to hold cooked snails. Thats a little strange right? Here is what product designer Manuel Jouvin has to say about it:

"During my researches, I pointed out that colored paper has an influence on color snail excrements. In partnership with Sylvie Pierru, a snailfarmer in Picardie (France), we created packagings made of snail excrements and destinated to cooked snails. They are envisaged in the molding cellulose process by replacing recyclable paper by snail dejections."

Some nice work for Atelier Ladurance, designed and sent in by StormHand. The Japanese Demin packaging at the top just won a Dutch Design Award for Packaging Design last week. Congrats!

“Bloomsberry & Co to grow their companies product range they decided to introduce Bloomsberry biscuits into the UK market. They were after fresh approach to the ordinary English biscuits that people in the UK keep in their top drawers. Part of the Bloomsberry brand idea is that the packaging design and humor is more important than the biscuits, they take it for granted that their biscuits are high-end quality products. Here’s what Out of blue came up with to establish that important dialogue with the consumers.”

“This packaging submission is for a nutrition company based out of San Diego, California called Aviara. The products are an AM morning health drink and a PM evening health drink. The designs were silk screened ink on frosted glass.”

“Pearlfisher has designed the packaging for Green & Black’s new look premium gift range to help drive Christmas sales within the category this year. The new packaging is now rolling out across the country with The Assortment due to hit shelves in early November.

Pearlfisher works with Green & Black’s as design partners and Natalie Chung, Creative Director Pearlfisher, said, “Gifting, by its very nature, needs to inspire warm emotions. This colourful new identity follows on from the introduction of the 100g bars and ensures stand-out and coherence of the range on shelf.” 

Green & Black’s Senior Brand Manager Natalie Brown, said, “We are a contemporary brand in a traditional category so we feel this new identity will give us a greater USP and standout for consumers. We also had great success with our vibrant Easter packs.”
