This series is brought to you by the new BlackBerry Torch, the touch screen BlackBerry complete with social feeds, improved internet browsing, and much more.

As smartphone and mobile web usage continues to soar, users are spending more and more time on social networks like Facebook and Twitter. But how is the mobile web impacting the oldest form of Internet communication, e-mail?

For desktop Internet users, e-mail may be playing second-fiddle to the likes of Facebook and social games like FarmVille, but on mobile devices, e-mail is still number one.

In fact, new research from The Nielsen Company suggests that e-mail represents 41.6% of mobile Internet time for users in the United States.

Putting that in perspective, if all mobile Internet time was condensed into one hour of usage, e-mail would represent 25 minutes of time spent.

In fact, mobile e-mail usage continues to grow, even as social media continues to become a bigger and bigger part of the mobile experience. Last fall, ExactTarget commissioned a study on smartphone Internet usage and found that the rise in social media adoption has lead to an increase in how much we e-mail from our mobile devices, and not the decrease many analysts were predicting.

Mobile E-mail is NOT Just for Business

It’s easy to conflate mobile e-mail with business users, after all, this was the demographic that first fully embraced the ability to send and receive messages from their mobile devices.

Over the years, however, e-mail usage on mobile devices has become less about business and more about staying in touch with personal contacts. According to ExactTarget’s research, 71% of business professionals with smartphones said that they send more personal e-mails than work-related missives from their mobile devices.

Don’t let the business suit fool you — next time you see a smartly dressed corporate type tapping away on their phone, chances are, they are probably e-mailing with friends.

Part of the reason we’re seeing an increase in personal e-mail communication devices is because of the nature of mobile. Users are always connected to their inbox and thus, can always receive a message.

E-Mail for Breakfast and After Sex

As we noted earlier this summer, more than 50% of U.S. online users check their e-mail before doing anything else online.

When you consider that peak Internet usage often takes place around 7 a.m., it’s not a stretch to say that many of us check our e-mail on our mobile phones before, well, stretching and getting out of bed.

It’s not just when we wake up that we check e-mail; studies indicate that more and more individuals check e-mail in the middle of the night and even after sex.

Again, the always-connected nature and location-ambivalence of mobile devices makes it easier for users to check their message or jot off a quick note, whether it’s the most appropriate time or not. I think we’ve all seen “that guy” at a solemn event like a funeral desperately trying to refrain from checking his BlackBerry during the service. Heck, some of us may even be that guy.

Is Social Media Eroding E-mail Usage?

Last year, Nielsen looked into what impact social media is having on e-mail usage. The results showed that there is a strong correlation between those who are frequent e-mail users and users that are also active across social media.

In fact, the study basically showed that social media makes users consume more e-mail, not less. Part of this is an effect of the e-mail nature of many social networks. Facebook, for instance, sends you an e-mail when you get a new wall post or someone sends you a message. Likewise, Twitter and Foursquare send you follower updates, and Twitter sends out direct message notifications.

Many blog comment systems can notify users when someone has responded to an article online, and services like Google Buzz bring commenting on social statuses or shared Google Reader items to the inbox.

We should note, however, that more and more users are starting to treat services like Facebook as replacements for an e-mail inbox. E-mail is still more versatile, but for users that have a heavily populated social graph, sometimes social networking services can offer a more convenient messaging experience.

PayPal has announced the launch of version 2 of its Android app. This feature "bump" technology, which lets two users bump their phones together to send money (much like the existing iPhone app).

"Split the check is another great feature, which lets you automatically calculate the total cost of a bill and then collect money directly from friends when out to dinner," says PayPal Mobile Senior Director Laura Chambers. "We hope these new features make it even easier to get paid back on the spot the next time you’re stuck picking up the tab."

"According to a recent Nielsen Company report, by the end of next year, more people will own smartphones than any other phone in the U.S., and that’s sure to drive people to use their phones to pay," adds Chambers. "We’ve definitely seen this growth ourselves. While we’ve had PayPal mobile applications since 2005, in the last few years we’ve seen usage soar. Over the last six months alone, PayPal generated nearly twice the mobile payment volume it did in all of 2009, and we expect to close out the year with over a half a billion dollars of mobile payment volume."

Android use itself is growing dramatically. A report from NPD Group found that one in three smartphones shipped in the U.S. are running Android.

The new PayPal app is free, and can be found in the Android Market.

Data from the Nielsen Company shows that the average smartphone user used 298MB of data throughout the first three months of 2010, but that’s an average. As the FierceWireless news site points out, the vast majority of smartphone users aren’t really using their unlimited data, and would likely benefit from tiered pricing. It’s about 6 percent of the market that uses up more than half the data consumed, and wireless carriers might actually lose out if the masses switched over. There’s a lot more interesting data pull-outs in the full post, including the point that more than a third of smartphone owners have no data plan at all, having bought their device before such plans were mandatory. Have you done any measurements or calculations on how your own data usage fits into a tiered vs. unlimited plan? [FierceWireless via Boy Genius Report] More »

The analytics company compared online buzz surrounding gold medal winners in both Canada and the United States. The data comes from the company’s database, which continually looks at consumer-created online content in the form of blog posts, blog comments, board/forum discussions and threads, group activity, selected Twitter feeds, citations/links to YouTube videos and news stories.

For those following the Olympic Winter Games this year, it might come as a bit of a surprise that Lindsey Vonn — who has commanded 36.22% of total U.S. Olympian gold medal buzz — dominates another fan favorite (snowboarder Shaun White) by more than a 10% margin, especially given the buzz about his Double McTwist trick.

As for Canada, the Olympics homebase this year, ice dancing gold medalists Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir are receiving nearly equal amounts of online buzz with 16.88% and 16.21% of total gold medal winner buzz respectively. The dominate athlete, however, is skier Alexandre Bilodeau how accounts for 23.33%, or nearly a quarter, of all buzz among Canadian gold medalists.

Of the big three — Google, Yahoo and Bing — Google saw an increase in search share, while both Yahoo and Bing faltered.

Comparing December’s data with some of the measurements from past months seems to indicate that Bing’s marketshare surge was just temporary.

Below we’ve included Nielsen’s data from December 2009 and November 2009. As you can see, Google held a 67.3 percent share in U.S. searches for December 2009. That’s up nearly two full percentage points when compared with the November statistics.

Looking at the charts, it’s clear that this growth came directly at the expense of Yahoo and Bing. Both search engines fell nearly a full point from November to December. Google’s high-profile rollout of real-time search results the first week of December might have had an impact.

Now that Yahoo and Microsoft are officially teaming up for search, both companies will need to start working together quickly if they want to recover and build marketshare. The longer the transition takes, the more Google stands to gain.

Nielsen has shared some findings from research involving how American consumers intend to spend their money during the upcoming holiday season. About 42% expect to spend less.

Online retailers may not feel the hit as much as some brick and mortars, however. According to Nielsen, online retailers, as well as value retailers like dollar stores, discounters, and club stores will attract "the lion’s share" of holiday spending. The firm says consumers will want to minimize trips and search for the best values.

According to Nielsen’s findings, 86% of consumers expect to spend the same or less than lest year. There is a 7% increase in the "less" category, from last year. Still, Nielsen thinks holiday sales will rise 0.03%, accounting for $90 billion.

"Given everything the consumer has absorbed over the past 12 to 18 months, the fact that we expect this coming holiday season to be flat in dollars can be viewed as a modest positive," says James Russo, Vice President, Global Consumer Insights at the Nielsen Company.

"Americans have undergone a fundamental change in how they spend their money, and the days of stretching finances to make purchases not deemed as necessary are over, at least for the time being," adds Russo. "That said, our research has shown that consumers are looking forward to loosening their purse strings a bit, but only once they feel more confident about the state of the economy and their personal financial situation."

October approaches. Many consumers begin shopping well before Thanksgiving, and that means the time is close at hand to begin preparing. Online discounts and free shipping have historically been popular motivators for purchases. If you can swing these things, it will likely be in your best interest to do so.

It’s as good a time as any to get heavily involved in social network participation as well. If you’re a retailer, you’ll want to be out there conversing and staying in people’s minds as they search for gift ideas for their friends and families.

Nielsen says traditional items like apparel, toys and technology will be the most popular categories, but at restrained levels and primarily sold in "value" channels. They say products like cookware, kitchen items, bed and bath accessories and alcoholic beverages will also do well. Gift cards are one category where consumers plan to spend more this holiday season, followed by toys and apparel. Office supplies, pet stores, home improvement and drug retailers are not expected to so as well.

A couple of additional findings were that 20% of households said that they had no plans to entertain at home or away from home during the holidays, and spending cut-backs are being driven by all income groups.
