Is the New York Times Jumping the Gun on Paid Content?

There has been a lot of talk of late about how the New York Times would probably be moving towards a paid model for its online content. The newspaper has now come right out and said that starting in early 2011, visitors to NYTimes.com will get "a certain number of articles" for free every month, before asking to pay a flat fee for unlimited access. Subscribers to the print edition would receive full access to the site for no additional charge.

There are still a lot of details to be worked out from the sound of it, and since the change won’t go into effect for a year, maybe they will have enough time to get it right. However, publishers have been trying to get this right for years already, and are still struggling to find that true answer. You have to wonder, what makes them think they can get the details ironed out by then?

It would be one thing to announce it and start doing it. Other publications do this, but a year is an incredibly long time in the online world. There are so many things that could happen and questions that may still remain unanswered in the online news industry. News Corp. for example, has set off a firestorm over whether or not people should be able to freely link to free content on the web. There are just so many things that come into play that it seems rather strange to assume everything will fall into place a year from now. Who knows what condition the industry will be in by then? Publications that are using paid models right now may decide it’s not working and switch to a different plan. To reiterate, a year is a long time, particularly in an industry with so many question marks.

"This announcement allows us to begin the thought process that’s going to answer so many of the questions that we all care about," Arthur Sulzberger Jr., the company chairman and publisher of the newspaper is quoted as saying. "We can’t get this halfway right or three-quarters of the way right. We have to get this really, really right."

I would say the thought process has been in motion for some time, and it’s hard to imagine setting a deadline for the discussion to wrap up in such a timeframe. Does setting such a deadline suggest a hint of desperation? The Times says that any changes will be closely watched by other publishers of online content, and there is no doubt that this will indeed be the case.

The publication refers to Nielsen Online and analysts’ data indicating that NYTimes.com is "by far" the most popular newspaper site in the country with over 17 million readers a month in the U.S. alone.

H-P Testing a Touchless “Wall of Touch”

Hewlett-Packard is testing out a new design of its TouchSmart technology that doesn’t actually require customers to touch the screen.

The new design, called the “wall of touch”, is an interactive touch screen wall comprised of up to nine 43 inch to 46 inch, 1.5 inch thick panels with a resolution of 1080p. Driven by an H-P Z800 workstation, the wall acts as a large immersive H-P TouchSmart computer both in terms of content and resolution. Users can access cable feeds, satellite feeds, downloaded and streaming content from the web such as YouTube, Hulu.com, and social networking sites, as well view DVR and DVD content.

Philip McKinney, Vice President and Chief Technology Officer of H-P’s Personal Systems Group, recently stopped in New York to show off the technology. Unlike most touch screen interfaces, users don’t have to make actual contact with the wall for it to interpret their gestures.

The wall employs a touch mechanism that uses optical cameras and a magnetic strip to detect when users are nearing the wall. For users who can’t reach the far corners of the screens, the wall of touch also works with a standard keyboard and mouse.

The wall of touch is not the first touch screen PC/TV creation to hit the market, but is one of the largest. For example, SONY VAIO has an All-in-One Touchscreen with HDTV capabilities, but it’s a single display of up to 24 in. Smaller companies have developed attachable screens that can turn plasma screens into touch screens, as well as projectors that create touch-enabled surfaces up to 10 inches.

Mr. McKinney, who also leads H-P’s Innovation Program Office, says H-P first began working on the “wall of touch” prototype about a year ago, when Richard Edelman, the chief executive of H-P’s public relations firm, expressed interest in an innovative and interactive screen for Edelman’s new offices in downtown Manhattan. Since then it has attracted the interest of other clients, according to Mr. McKinney, and versions of the wall of touch are being shown in the headquarters of the NBA as well as at the Continental Airlines counter in Houston Airport.

“We’re in the process of building out the next handful of walls as part of supporting our customer base, with the intent that, if there’s enough interest, H-P will turn it into a mainstream product,” says Mr. McKinney.

He said “wall of touch” will not be widely available to consumers until 2011, and would likely come with a hefty price tag: anywhere from a couple thousand dollars up to $100,000 for more advanced systems with technologies like HD video conferencing.

For some, the wall of touch may seem like little more than a cluster of H-P TouchSmart panels stitched together that allow for already-available interactive experiences. Mr. McKinney says the company nixed the idea of one large single display, as it would require rear projection and a translucent screen material that would allow more light to pass through and potentially create issues with the resolution.

H-P has been pushing touchscreens for two years. It first introduced its line of TouchSmart PC’s in 2007, followed by a line of notebook computers in 2008, in efforts to boost sales of its personal computers and gain market share. Since then, the company has surpassed Dell as the top seller of PC’s. According to an IDC report from earlier this month, H-P shipped nearly 18 million PC’s in the 4th quarter, a 23% gain from the previous year. The report did not break out touchscreen sales.

Mr. McKinney declined to comment upon the company’s plans to build out more immersive display technologies or its expectations for sales of the “wall of touch” once it hits the market, saying the company is in a quiet period leading up to the company’s Q1 earnings release on February 17.

However, prior to then, H-P will moderate a panel at Sundance 2010, with representatives from Disney, Dreamworks, and the NBA, that will discuss the future of immersive 3-D displays. Mr. McKinney indicated H-P plans to unveil additional new display technology during the panel.

Conan Sells Himself on Craigslist’s Casual Encounters

First Conan O’Brien put The Tonight Show up for sale on Craigslist. Now he’s decided to sell himself there, too. He created a listing in the “Casual Encounters” section.

He announced the listing on his show, saying, “This is a real offer.” We’re sure it’s not actually a real offer, but the claim makes it that much funnier. You can take a peek at the listing for yourself while it lasts — it will be around for about seven days unless Craigslist takes it down because it’s fake — but here are the bullet points:

TALL, SLENDER REDHEAD AVAILABLE FOR NIGHTTIME RECREATION

- 6’4”, completely ripped, VERY Caucasian.

- Drapes match the carpet.

- Currently homeless, must meet at your place.

- Can go a whole hour (with scheduled breaks every 7-10 minutes).

- Fatties welcome.

- Not afraid to take two people at once, and then a musical guest.

- NOTE: If you want me to perform after midnight, it’ll cost you!

Conan said he received thousands of offers in response to his previous Craigslist listing for The Tonight Show — there’s no telling how many folks will respond to this one. Conan also took some time out his show to share some of his own favorite listings. They included a 1970 Gremlin automobile with 370,000 miles, a man’s high school diploma, an autographed Chumbawumba CD, a cat wearing makeup, and an old, autographed headshot of Tonight Show band leader Max Weinberg.

He also took some time out of his monologue to acknowledge the fans who showed up at the Facebook-organized rallies in L.A., New York, Chicago and Seattle. He showed a quick clip of the mayhem (which included a cameo by band member La Bamba) and then showed a very funny clip of what he said was a pro-NBC rally nearby.

The harsh humor about his situation at NBC continued in his monologue, and it was even sharper than before. He said that now that he’s leaving, he’s not allowed to say anything negative about the network. But they didn’t say anything about singing, he said. Watch the video below.

New York’s Transit Authority Offers Data To Developers

New Yorkers are supposed to be among the world’s top trendsetters, and now, developers have been provided with a new opportunity to impress them. New York’s Metropolitan Transit Authority has decided to share data with developers.

According to Ben Fried, MTA Chair Jay Walder said in a statement, “We need to get out of our own way and instead get out in front of the data sharing revolution.”

Walder also said, “By making access to our data directly from our website, we are encouraging the developer community to do the work we can’t to create apps that benefit our customers at no cost to the MTA.”

The data includes stuff related to routes, schedules, and fares, which is about all anybody could ask for. Developers just need to be careful with regards to using the MTA’s logos and maps, since the organization wants developers to license them.

Best and Worst Logo Redesigns

Boiling down the creative and consumer-related concepts of your company to one illustration is no short order. So it’s not without some degree of compassion and understanding that one should look at and judge companies’ logos. That said, we seem to right in the middle of an unprecedented age of the arbitrary logo re-design and rampant re-branding. Some of it is coming out great…and some of it is a design disaster.
Let’s start with the good news:

I’m usually all for tradition in logos; if you have a design that’s somewhat iconic, even if it’s not that great from a design standpoint, you should probably just roll with it. People like that. Go for a chic new redesign and a lot of people will think you’re breaking from your roots, trying to be all fancy pants, etc. One place this doesn’t hold true: Best Buy. Their new logo still incorporates the famous yellow tag, but takes it down a notch. I, for one, won’t miss that eyesore of a logo.

Usually, I’m like a really old man when it comes to changing things that are familiar to me: I’m stuck in my ways, I like things to stay the same and if they change, I’ll be bemoaning the fact for a long time to come. Such is not true with the redesigned BP logo. Almost as soon as it happened, it settled in a felt nice. Matched with their overall aesthetic overhaul, their stores feel much more modern and inviting.

When New York-based FutureBrand reworked the UPS logo in 2003, it was a total shipping shake-up. But as it turns out, branding themselves “brown” worked out really well, bringing the time-trusted parcel handlers into the 21st century.

Everything about the bold, label-hogging serif font on the new Gatorade bottles screams, “This is so predictable! Please hate me!” But somehow, I don’t. The smaller signature lightning bolt and white lettering make the bright colors of the sports drink the main feature, which is a refreshing change from the previously overwhelming label design.

Am I the only who kinda forgot that the rainbow peacock wasn’t NBC’s original logo? If that isn’t the mark of good design, I don’t know what is. You’ve found a keeper, NBC. Don’t mess it up!

Dear Tropicana, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Every marketing designer should have that permanently tattooed on the backs of their hands. Tropicana had done the rarely attained in marketing, which is to have a logo (the orange with the straw in it) that people actually recognized, remembered and felt comfortable with. And then they threw it away. Major logo fail.

Oh, come on, Blue Jays! You guys had one of the sweetest logos of any sports team, and that’s really saying something coming from someone who doesn’t give a damn about sports. But the bird and the maple leaf really worked for me. Now you’ve gotten rid of the red and you’re just another indistinguishable sports logo.

Speaking of indistinguishable, CapitalOne’s new redesigned logo has done something really confusing: taken an, eh, not great but definitely acceptable design and added the ubiquitous swoosh! Don’t they realize that putting a swoosh in your logo is pretty much the best thing you can do to blend in with everyone else/be confused for Nike?

Another failure in the “Look Ma, we added a swoosh!” category is Kraft. Like I said, Im a traditional gal when it comes to logos; I really think if you’ve got something that’s burned into the collective consumer mind, then you’re crazy to re-brand yourself. Kraft is an excellent example of this. While their original logo wasn’t anything to write home about, everyone knew it and trusted it. And now they have a swoosh.

Conan Rally Moves from Facebook to the Streets

The Facebook group I’m With COCO (the same one that we wrote about last week) organized rallies to support The Tonight Show’s Conan O’Brien in Los Angeles, New York, Chicago and Seattle today.

Artist Mike Mitchell, who designed the now almost iconic group image, is tweeting the I’m With COCO rally right now, TwitPics and all.

The L.A. crowd is assembled right outside the studio where Conan and crew tape The Tonight Show, and they’re accompanied by stuntman Steven Ho, who was one of Conan’s first guests on the show. He made a YouTube video to promote the movement. The group has more than 300,000 fans.

The protesters are using signs courtesy of Signazon featuring the I’m With COCO image. The Facebook event page for the L.A. event has 1,600 confirmed guests and just over 1,000 maybes. Chicago’s event: 549 confirmed, 481 maybes. That’s a mighty impressive turnout for a show host who’s already definitely out of a job for now. Here’s the first TwitPic of the event.

We pick 10 tracks from around the web and offer you either links to the downloads or streams, or embed the streams when possible. Our last feature was a special Video Edition, and this week we’re catching up on the backlog of all your great submissions. Each entry this week includes at least one free MP3 download for your listening pleasure.

1. Brian Ray: “I Found You” — When not busy touring with Paul McCartney’s band, guitarist, bass player, songwriter and native Californian Brian Ray pens solo rock tunes like this. Stream it for free from the previous link and snag a free download too (right-click to save it to your desktop).

2. Róisín Murphy: “Momma’s Place” — Irish producer and singer-songwriter Róisín Murphy is perhaps best known as the former frontwoman for electronica duo Moloko, and has gone on to a critically acclaimed solo career. 3. Impediments: “You Want a Square” — Four teenagers from Oakland are responsible for this fun post-punk garage rock song with surf and psychedelia highlights. Snag a free download by right-clicking, grab another track from the Free Music Archive and check out the band on MySpace.

4. Jump Clubb: “A Frozen Hug” — A little bit of techno, a little bit of disco, a little bit of electropop and some various genres to taste. Grab two free MP3s from their site.

5. Matt McCloskey: “These Times Won’t Last” — Get Austin singer-songwriter Matt McCloskey’s full album as a free download for a limited time — just enter your e-mail address to receive the download link.

6. Milkman: Lactose and THC — San Diego-based mashup artist and producer Milkman has his sophomore release up for sale, but is offering his debut album for free streaming and download.

7. Kirsten DeHaan: “1984″ — Indie singer-songwriter Kirsten DeHaan offers Mashable readers a free download: right-click to snag the MP3 for “1984.” This New York-based artist recently put out the Thorns on a Crown EP, available from her website.

8. Elspeth: “Old Age” — Irish rockers Elspeth are a five-piece indie group who have been gigging widely in the UK since coming together in March 2009. Right-click for a free download of the “Old Age” MP3 and check out more about the band on their MySpace page.

9. Caroline Herring: “Tales of the Islander” — The fourth album from Atlanta-based Mississippi native Caroline Herring invokes Americana roots and iconic folk females with a mix of originals and covers showcasing Herring’s strong and complex vocals. How Non-Profits and Activists Can Leverage Location Based Services

What started as a highly addictive pastime for early adopters to alert their friends of their whereabouts and compete for virtual mayorship of their corner coffee shop, is steadily evolving into a global vehicle for individuals and businesses to garner social capital. With tech evangelists and small businesses exploring the potential power of Foursquare and other location enabled services, it was only a matter of time before change makers in the non-profit and social enterprise ecosystem “checked-in” and began finding innovative methods to rally support for their causes.

1. Rewarding Volunteer Loyalty

Just as the first Foursquare Mayor of Spud Brothers was rewarded with a free meal for customer loyalty, an activist who frequents a particular venue could be compensated with donations, supplies, or community outreach support.

Restaurants that monitor customer regularity based on Foursquare data could give free meals to local food banks. Drug stores could issue over the counter medication and toiletries to homeless shelters. Nightclubs that hold open mic nights could allow their mayors to get up on stage and deliver calls to action. Non-profit leaders could hold meetings at local watering holes that track Foursquare usage in exchange for outdoor signage promoting their cause. The possibilities are endless.

2. Turn Check Ins Into Dollars

Turning social media participation into tangible currency has proven to be a popular trend in the last year. Created to spread cancer awareness and draw attention from users and potential corporate sponsors, Twitter hashtags such as #BeatCancer and #BlameDrewsCancer penetrated the social stratosphere. Location based application creators are following suit and making socially responsible participation easy for users.

Last month, Foursquare teamed up with New York Tech Gives Back and Pepsi to raise funds for Campinteractive, a non-profit organization that provides inner city youth with technical training and outdoor recreational programs. From December 6 to 13, Pepsi donated $0.04 to Campinteractive for every check in point added to the Foursquare leaderboard.

A new mobile application called CauseWorld is baking that idea by issuing “karma points” to users when they check in at local businesses affiliated with the service. Large brands such as Kraft and Citi, which are carried at those locations, turn the points into dollars and allow customers to choose a cause among a list of nine different charities.

3. Crowdsourcing Crisis Information

The open source project Ushahidi, which was originally designed to track post-election accounts of violence in Kenya, uses user-generated reports and Google Maps to monitor crime, devastation, and peace and relief efforts around the world.

The Ushahidi website currently has an option on its front page for users to submit real-time reports and track information connected to relief efforts in Haiti.

While the first generation of the Ushahidi platform has been used predominantly in Africa, it’s recently spread to the United States. Atlanta Crime Maps, for example, traces criminal offenses in the Atlanta metro area.

South Korea Wins LG’s $100,000 Texting World Cup

LG hosted the Mobile World Cup in New York for 26 contestants from 13 countries yesterday. The South Korean team won the grand prize for overall performance, but a Portuguese competitor set a new texting world record.

Each team consisted of two competitors — one who specialized in numeric keypads, the other in QWERTY. Games intended to measure texting speed and efficiency were conceived for the event. The South Koreans (teenagers Young-Ho Bae and Mok-Min Hatook) took home the $100,000 first place prize, the Americans (Morgan Dynda and Kate Moore) came in second to win $20,000, and Argentinians Juan Ignacio Aufranc and Agustina Montegna placed third for $10,000.

One of the events at the Mobile World Cup involved trying to set a new Guinness World Record for texting speed. The existing record was successfully broken when Portuguese competitor Pedro Matias typed a 264-character message in one minute and 59 seconds — that’s 23 seconds faster than the record set by Arttu Harkki in 2005. That was with a QWERTY keypad, though. You can say it would have been more impressive on a numeric keypad, but we challenge you to do better. Here’s a quick promotional video covering the event.

10 Foursquare Apps You Can Use Right Now

The opening of Twitter’s API transformed the service from an interesting web site into the communications plumbing that serves homepages, newsrooms, and smartphones all over the world.

With the release of its own API, Foursquare is banking that it can do the same. Developers are now able to tap into the location-based service’s rich data supply and build their own applications.

Location-based apps are hot right now. More developers building on Foursquare’s platform only fortifies it in the location-based battle with Gowalla, Loopt, Brightkite, and others.

Several Foursquare apps that were announced alongside the API release are now officially available for use. Here’s a look at the first wave.

1. Foursquare for Palm Pre/Pixi

A couple of developers (with some help from Palm) whipped up a WebOS version of Foursquare just in time for the new year. Hopefully the Foursquare team can now return to developing features for the service and let eager programmers build apps themselves. If you’re on a Pre or Pixi, you can get Foursquare here.

2. Foursquare for Android

This one has a similar story to the above, only Android-style. Built by Joe LaPenna, Chris Brummel, Brad Root, Darrel Herbst & Micah Craig, it’s not only slick and lightweight, but it’s also open-source. If you’re reading this on your Android phone, you can grab the app right here. If not, you can grab it from the Market or get the source code here.

3. SocialGreat

While not an app you download, SocialGreat grabs checkin data from Foursquare, couples it with Twitter & BrightKite geodata, and shows you what places in your neighborhood are hot spots. It’s cool and well-designed, but right now all it shows is that the most popular spots are, unsurprisingly, airports and train terminals –- places where people congregate, but not necessarily for social reasons. However, it’s certain to start filtering out stuff like that, and whereas Foursquare’s app itself now has trending places nearby, SocialGreat could be a good way to find out about that last-minute party or tech meetup.

4. MobZombies

If you’re into mindless gaming (literally), you’ll love MobZombies for the iPhone. Basically it turns real human checkin activity on Foursquare into zombie hordes you have to avoid or defeat by either using your touchscreen, or, as the app puts it, “moving your body as a joystick” to trigger your phone’s movement controls. It costs $2.99 in the app store, and will probably encourage you to exercise more than any other app in your collection, assuming you like cartoon gore and 1980s video game graphics.

5. Yipit

Why not find out about specials at your favorite places? This handy application imports your usual haunts from Foursquare and then keeps tabs on deals at those venues for you. Unfortunately it’s only available in New York right now, but it definitely works — after I signed up, it told me about a great deal at the sushi bar below my apartment. Guess where I’m going tonight.

6. Foursquare WordPress Widget

Right now it’s pretty simple, but nothing’s stopping you from customizing the look and feel on your own blog. Check out the plugin homepage here and start publishing a feed of your checkins on your blog.

7. ul.timate.info Firefox Add-on

While only useful if you’re on the move with your computer or on someone else’s desktop, this add-on lets you check in and enjoy all the features of Foursquare without needing a smartphone.

8. Last Night’s Checkins

This is an interesting idea. Basically, this app helps you keep a Foursquare diary. Every day it e-mails you a list of your previous night’s checkins, and then you fill in information about each experience. Perfect for those of you with fascinating exploits that you feel you must share with the rest of us (or for those of you that have trouble remembering what you did last night).

9. BlackBook

For anyone that already reads BlackBook Magazine’s nightlife guides, this app will sync your BlackBook and Foursquare accounts in perfect harmony, delivering you deals and juicy information based on your location.

10. Where Do You Go

Built by NYU student Steven Lehrburger, Where Do You Go generates a snazzy heat map of your Foursquare activity around your city. Try it yourself.

BONUS: Peek Maps

For all six of you who own a Twitter Peek, Peek Maps can show off your Foursquare activity alongside your tweet locations in an embeddable widget.

Coming Soon

Layar Reality Browser: This one is actually in a work-in-progress beta right now, and you can open it on your mobile phone here. It adds a Foursquare layer to the augmented reality browser functionality in the existing Layar app. Basically, you point your camera at a building, and it tells you who’s there, who’s the mayor, and what tips were left behind. Keep an eye out for the official release –- this one should be pretty cool.

FourTap allows you to check into Foursquare using a London subway Oystercard. It’s not done yet, but when it is, it could make Foursquare significantly easier to use. Check out the video.

Twitter Grows Internationally, But Very Few Use Location [STATS]

New data from social media analytics firm Sysomos shows that despite the U.S. traffic flatline, Twitter is still growing in popularity internationally.

Whereas in June of last year the U.S. accounted for 62 percent of all active Twitter users, that number has fallen to 50 percent. Significant growth in countries like Germany, Brazil and Indonesia has contributed to Twitter’s burgeoning international user share over the past six months.

Brazil’s growth from 2 percent to 8.8 percent puts it in second place behind the United States for active Twitter users. The UK is close behind at 7.2 percent. Drilling down into users by city, London, Los Angeles, Sao Paulo, New York City and Chicago make up the top five in terms of unique users, but New York contributes the most total tweets at 2.37 percent. The data above was compiled from a study of more than 13 million unique Twitter accounts active between October 16 and December 16, 2009.

Another interesting reveal from the study is how startlingly few Twitter users have enabled the location feature that allows geographic information to be attached to their tweets. Only a paltry 0.23 percent of 10 million tweets Sysomos looked at this week were tagged with their locations.

The geolocation feature has only been live to all since November, though, so it may just take some time for the concept to reach people — and for third parties to build features that really take advantage of the location information. For now, it seems that not many people feel there’s a compelling reason to enable the location service just yet.

Surely Twitter’s push to launch its various language versions, including German, Italian, French, Spanish and Japanese, has contributed to its international growth spurt. Do you think international growth is the key to solving Twitter’s growth problem?

Former Google Executive is Leaving AOL to Join Yahoo

About three months after former Google executive Shashi Seth was recruited to AOL to help build the company’s digital advertising systems, he is leaving the company for a position at Yahoo, citing personal reasons.

“It is with a heavy heart that I must tell you that I am resigning from my role at AOL,” Mr. Seth wrote in an email to staff. “Very recent developments in my personal life have made it impossible for me to maintain an executive role that requires extensive travel.”

Mr. Seth was based at AOL’s offices in Silicon Valley. The job required frequent travel to the company’s headquarters in New York.

Mr. Seth said in the email that he was approached last week by a “Bay Area company” and accepted their offer to join. “This new role will enable me to remain local, and gives me lots of flexibility in where I work from (we might move to India for some time) and be available for my family, yet gives me something interesting and challenging to work on.”

Mr. Seth couldn’t be reached for comment on Wednesday.

Mr. Seth was hired in September as AOL’s senior vice president of global advertising products. He worked at Google from 2005 to 2008, where he most recently was head of monetization at video site YouTube.

“While Shashi was only with us for 90 days, we appreciate the early steps he took to help us redefine AOL’s advertising roadmap,” Jeff Levick, president of AOL advertising said in an email to staff.

Jamie Fellows will lead AOL’s global ad products group in the interim. Yahoo did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The news came the same day that AOL announced the majority of its domestic job cuts to staff after failing to reach its goal of cutting about a third of its staff through a voluntary buyout program.

Intel: AMD Execs Cited Its Failings, Not Intel Tactics

Intel hasn’t kept its feelings hidden about the Federal Trade Commission’s lawsuit against the company last month. But the chip giant’s formal response to the antitrust action amplifies a few key arguments, partly relying on internal communications of rival Advanced Micro Devices.

The FTC–like regulators in New York, Japan, South Korea and Europe–accused Intel of a series of improper tactics to hobble rivals, notably AMD and Nvidia. AMD filed its own antitrust suit in 2005 that was settled in November, after Intel agreed to pay $1.25 billion. AMD’s case, and those of government agencies, was based partly on the argument that AMD chips introduced in 2003 had clear advantages but gained market share more slowly than expected because of Intel’s actions.

Intel has flatly denied the allegations against the company, which in the case of the European Commission and New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo were reinforced by emails from Intel executives and its customers. Intel’s written response to the FTC case, which was filed Dec. 31 but not widely noticed, uses a similar tactic in backing up its arguments that AMD’s problems were largely due to AMD’s own failings.

Intel cites, among other things, internal statements in 2004 by Henri Richard–then AMD’s top sales exec and now a senior executive with Freescale Semiconductor–that a person looking at the situation “with an objective set of eyes” would never buy AMD chips. “I certainly would never buy AMD for a personal system if I wasn’t working here.”

Some of Richard’s other comments are redacted, but he goes on in the document to rail against AMD selling only microprocessor chips themselves, and not a “platform” of those products and accessory chip sets, as Intel does. He described that AMD strategy as “pathetic,” for “exposing a partial story, particularly in the commercial segment, that is clearly inferior to Intel’s, if we want to be honest with ourselves.”

He added that AMD is saddled with a reputation that “we’re cheap, less reliable, lower quality consumer type product.”

The Intel document cites similar admissions from other AMD executives, some of which are also blacked out in the document. But one theme is AMD’s execution problems, including those that resulted when it landed Dell as a chip customer after years of failures–resulting in problems delivering chips to other customers.

Michael Silverman, an AMD spokesman, declined comment on the remarks cited by Intel, citing the settlement with the company. But he added: “The decisions of Japan, Korea, the European Commission, the New York Attorney General’s Office, the US Federal Trade Commission and Intel itself in settling with AMD – including paying us $1.25 billion – speak for themselves.”

Richard couldn’t immedately be reached. It should be kept in mind that, during his AMD years, he said plenty of positive things about AMD and its chips–and negative things about Intel’s behavior.

Following one 2007 meeting with analysts, for example, Richard bitterly complained about how little attention Intel’s tactics were getting in the press. “In any other industry what is being done would be on the front page of every newspaper,” he complained at the time. “For some reason it is tolerated in the computer industry.”

The Intel response, more broadly, reiterates its contention that the microprocessor market has relentlessly brought innovation and lower prices to consumers–and the FTC’s complaint seeks to micro-manage its business in ways that would disrupt this efficient operation of the free market. “The complaint seeks to turn Intel into a public utility,” Intel states, seeking “remedies that would restrict Intel’s ability to innovate and develop products that benefit consumers when competitors might be disadvantaged by those innovations.”

The company’s arguments could hardly be more different than the FTC’s conclusions in its Dec. 16 complaint. Without the remedies it is seeking, the agency wrote, the consequences for consumers and computer makers “have been and likely will continue to be supracompetitive prices, reduced quality and less innovation.”

Interactive Netflix Map Shows Favorite Movies in 12 Cities

Netflix teamed up with The New York Times to produce this interactive map of the most popular movies in 12 major U.S. cities.

The map ranks the most rented movie and TV rentals for each zip code, so you can see whether the folks in your neighborhood have the same tastes as you do.

You can also see a color-coded overlay of every city for each of Netflix’s top 100 most-rented films in 2009. Do you want to know which New York borough appreciated Slumdog Millionaire the most? Looks like it’s bigger in Brooklyn than in lower Manhattan. The sharp divisions for some items — like the austere and thoughtful TV series Mad Men — are very telling, but Brad Pitt’s The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is red hot just about everywhere.

You can make some interesting anecdotal deductions using the map. For example, noted film critic Roger Ebert tweeted that you could make educated guesses about a community’s opinion on homosexuality based on where Milk ranks. Hardly scientific, but it’s interesting to think about. You can probably find a correlation between number of teen girls in a neighborhood and how popular Twilight is, though you’ll unfortunately need a different map tell you who’s Team Edward and who’s Team Jacob.

In an attempt to give our readers some real world application of all this social media theory swirling about we will be occasionally speaking with some real people who do the real work. How about that? Today we look at social media and the sports world.

Regular readers of this blog know that I am a bit of a sports fan. I say a bit because I am no longer playing any fantasy leagues etc so I am not a sports fanatic. I am primarily a New York area sports fan but not the usual kind (Giants, Mets, Devils. I could care less about the NBA). People in that area are pretty passionate about their sports and that’s how I learned to be a fan.

Now times have changed considerably. It is difficult for the everyday fan to afford attending actual games (especially if a family is involved). As a result the connection to sports is changing and social media is creating a whole new channel for the fans to interact and be a part of the action that they may not get at the stadium or the ballpark.

Pat Coyle of Coyle Media has been involved in the social side of sports for quite a while now. Pat has worked as the Director of Marketing for the Indianapolis Colts and helped create MyColts.net, which is an active online community for the fans of the NFL franchise. I talked to Pat about this and other social media projects he has underway.

Frank: Since most people in the social media industry came from somewhere else what is your background?

Pat: I have always had an interest in ways technology impacts human communication. I am a Chicago native came out of a direct marketing and sales career to be the Director of marketing for the Colts. I left to start a company and returned to the Colts after five years to be the Director of Digital Business for four years. Coyle Media, my consultancy to the sports industry, is now 2 years old.

Frank: So tell us about Coyle Media and what you are doing?

Pat: Coyle Media has two legs at this point. One is Sports 2.0, which has its own community at sportsmarketing20.com. The focus of my sports practice is to help teams (and other properties) make money through digital media. The main revenue sources we assist with are sponsorship, ticket sales and community building.

The other part of Coyle Media is a social media platform called SmallerIndiana.com, which is a hyper-local online community we launched 2 years ago. It has grown to 8,000 members, and is driven by a sponsorship business model.

The consulting business keeps me very busy so the communities, while growing, could use more of my time. That’s the nature of the online community business but I’m not complaining.

Frank: You started and have grown MyColts.net. Tell us about that.

Pat: The theory is simple: connect fans to each other and you connect them closer to your brand. Colts fans want to socialize with other fans. They want to be seen and recognized and they want to feel like they’re getting inside access. MyColts.net was designed to give fans all three of these things. We figured if we could engage fans through social media, it would give us another way to help sponsors engage with fans and it would give us another channel through which we can sell merchandise and tickets. So far the site has over 28,000 registered members.

Research showed as well that while there are ticket buying fans that are in the Indianapolis region the greater number of Colts fans actually reside throughout the country. This site gives them a chance to become more involved in the team without ever likely being able to attend a game.

Frank: What are your thoughts on the NFL and their attempts to limit social media interaction with the athletes and fans?

Pat: I run a little counter to the “let it be wide-open” crowd. I can see the side of ownership and the need to protect their investments. While most think that the owners are just rich guys getting richer, they are actually taking on all the risk so their desire to keep things contained to protect the brand are less about being “old school’ and more about doing good business.

I do, however, think ownership must face the fact that fans are gaining control, so their habit of controlling content may have to evolve rapidly in order to allow fans to do what they do. While it will be an interesting transition it will be best for everyone in the long run.

Frank: How will social media effect how sports are marketed and sold in the future?

Pat: There is a HUGE opportunity to tap Facebook and Twitter in combination with team social communities in order to add value to fans’ experiences, create opportunities for sponsors and make money for the team. But these things won’t happen by accident. Teams need to make them happen.

So far, most teams do not have anyone running their digital channels. I think that needs to change if teams are going to tap the full potential of digital. I hope to see teams begin to optimize their sites for sponsorship and ticket sales. In fact, that’s the focus of my Sports 2.0 service…to help teams optimize their digital channels to drive profits.

The biggest idea in my brain right now is a way to help teams sell tickets through the social graph. I am working on this one and will let you know more when it’s ready. I am really excited about the prospects for sports teams as a result and I think the future of sports marketing will be heavily concentrated here.

What can you use the application for?

Stickk.com is a site designed to help people keep commitments to lose weight, quit smoking, exercise regularly or maintain their weight. These are the standard commitments listed by the site – users can create a custom commitment for almost any task or goal. The user makes a contract with the site to keep the commitment, and can optionally bet money on the fact that they will keep the commitment. The brainchild of 3 Yale University economists, the site is designed to provide an incentive for helping people to keep commitments. There is an active user community, which the user can interact with in helping them to keep their commitment.

The site offers profiles, friends, messaging and communities (groups). There are communities built around Career, Diet and Healthy Eating, Education and Knowledge, Exercise and Fitness, Family and Relationships, Green Initiatives, Health and Lifestyle, Money and Finance, Quite Smoking, Sport, Hobby and Recreation and Weight Loss. The site also offers a service to corporations for helping employees achieve their corporate goals. Users create a commitment by stating a goal, setting a timeframe, determining the stakes, choosing a Referee, who will monitor their progress towards their goal, and choosing a support system (which can be either a community, other users on the site or any other individuals).

What is the history and popularity of the application?

New York, NY-based Stickk.com was founded in January 2007 by Ian Ayres and Dean Karlan. Jordan Goldberg is President and CEO of the site.

What are the differences to other applications?

Competition to Stickk.com comes from sites such as Mindtools.com. Mindtools.com offers help primarily in achieving career goals, and does not offer the contract aspect of commitment offered by Stickk.com. Stickk.com appears to be unique in the contract approach to achieving commitments.

How does the application look and feel to use?

The Stickk.com site has a very clean and uncluttered look and feel. The site is quite responsive, and page loads happen quickly. The social networking features work well, and the site is easy to use. Navigation is intuitive, with a convenient top menu bar with dropdowns shown on all pages of the site. Tabs on the menu bar include My Profile, Messages, Communities, About Us, FAQ and Contact Us. There is no advertising displayed on the Stickk.com site.

How does the registration process work?

Registration to Stickk.com is free and is required to use the site. The registration process asks for first and last name, email address, phone (optional), screen name, password, country, zip code and date of birth. Confirmation of the email address is not required.

What does it cost to use the application?

Premium services are available to corporate users. The site accepts Mastercard, Visa and American Express as payment for bets made on contracts. In the event of a failed commitment, the amount bet goes to charity or to a person designated by the user.

Who would you recommend the application to?

The Stickk.com site is recommended to anyone who needs accountability in trying to achieve a difficult goal in their life. The site offers a good support community, and the contract commitment is an added incentive to achieving the goal. The fact that bets can be made is a good incentive as well. Many people have used the site to successfully achieve a goal.

Twitter Argument Leads to Alleged Murder [REPORT]

A Twitter argument allegedly resulted in murder last month, and New York police may subpoena Tweets as evidence in the case, according to a newspaper report.

Jameg Blake, 22, is accused of fatally shooting Kwame Dancy (pictured), also 22, in a shotgun blast to the neck – he pleaded not guilty this Wednesday.

The Harlem murder case, which allegedly took place in an apartment building on W. 132nd St. on December 1, may turn out to be the first in which Tweets are used as evidence in a murder trial.

The NY Daily News writes:

It started as a simple Twitter beef, 140-character spurts of anger by two young men who grew up together.

Hours before the shooting, Dancy may have taunted Blake with a tweet: “N—–s is lookin for u don’t think I won’t give up ya address for a price betta chill asap!” … Blake’s Twitter account is also full of online disses, though only one tweet mentions Dancy by name: “R.I.P. Kwame” on Dec.3.

A police source said the messages may be subpoenaed to bolster the theory that there was bad blood between the two old pals.

It’s not clear to what extent the Tweets are being implicated: certainly Twitter provides a juicy angle for newspapers at this point, and the relationship between the two appears to have been strained in the past. With the press quickly latching on to stories like the “Craigslist Killer”, it’s also worth reiterating that Twitter is simply a platform — how people use the service is not something under their control.

The Daily News quotes the victim’s mother, Madeline Smith, expressing her disbelief: “That’s not a reason to shoot somebody, that’s crazy. I don’t know what’s going on with that Twitter thing.”

Foursquare Changes the Game … Literally

Earlier this week the much-anticipated Foursquare everywhere release came to fruition, making the location-based mobile game available to all regardless of their physical location. Details behind the everywhere launch and how it affected the overall game experience, however, were sparse. Until now.

Foursquare everywhere changes the check-in game as we know it. So take what you know and throw it out the window. This just got more interesting.

The City Shake Up

The whole Foursquare experience used to be centered around your city, so badges and check-ins were city-specific, and anytime you’d find yourself in another city you’d essentially need to start over from scratch. Foursquare everywhere turns that model upside down, so now you can place yourself anywhere in the world (instead of Foursquare locking you down in the nearest city).

You’ll also notice that adding new venues is now address-optional. Instead, Foursquare finally got smart: If you opt to skip the physical address entry step when you check in at a new venue, they’ll automatically attach your GPS location — as pinpointed by your mobile device — to define the venue’s location. Given how tedious it is to manually enter the address of a new place, especially with the knowledge that your GPS-enabled phone knows where you are, we find this to be the most welcome development of all.

Badges of Honor

Duplicate badges are donzo, which means gone are the days when you could earn the Newbie badge for each new city you traveled to. When it comes to badges, think of them as no longer constrained to a particular city, but worldwide badges of honor you carry with you. In fact, you can earn badges anywhere in the world and take them with you as travel. So, if you’ve unlocked the School Night badge in San Diego, there’s no need to try to stay out all night in New York (on a week night) to repeat your previous coup.

For those of you who love a challenge, Foursquare everywhere now includes a whole new set of badges for you to try to unlock. There are a total of 10 new ones (three pictured above), but we also know that even more are on the way. Since there is such an allure around unlocking mystery badges, we won’t spoil the fun, but we know that some of you at CES have managed to unlock a few of these new treasures.

Who’s on Top?

I personally play the Foursquare check-in game for the mayorships, badges and tips from friends, but some of you take rising to the top of your city’s leaderboard very seriously. If that’s you, pay close attention, because the rules have changed slightly.

With the city-lockdown lifted, Foursquare now organizes local leaderboards by your proximity to other Foursquare users. Now you’ll be ranked against everyone who has accrued points within 25 miles (40 km) of your current location. You probably won’t notice the change too much, but we think it’s a smart play and opens up the competition elements to Foursquare users on the fringe of larger playing fields.

Coming Soon

With money in the bank, Foursquare is pushing out improvements at lightning speed. In the coming weeks you can expect a spiffy new version of the iPhone app — version 1.5 — to be released in the App Store. While there won’t be tons of cosmetic changes to this update, you can expect 1.5 to be more sophisticated when it comes to locating and serving up more accurate places nearby. Eventually the iPhone app will also support more “Trending Nearby” functionality to call out hot places. We also know that the team is working on drastic UX improvements to the iPhone app, so you can expect a major redesign in the coming months.

When it comes to other mobile devices, the beta BlackBerry app is being tested by 5,000 users and Foursquare plans to push this to the public in about a week. And of course, Palm Pre users can already get their hands on that app now.

How should we use Twitter at tech events?

Earlier this week I linked up a number of the great articles I read over the holiday period. Included in that list was this video from Chris Pirillo. If you use Twitter, attend tech conferences and have 10 minutes to spare then please have a watch.

I can’t help but agree with a lot of what Chris says. There’s no question that Twitter is a great “backchannel” at events and to a certain degree a barometer of what attendees are enjoying and what they are not.

Checking Twitter for feedback is often the first thing speakers do when they come off stage, smiles and more often downbeat faces follow. A quick tweet, perhaps in jest, lacks any real context and I think this is one of the main issues. Was it the talk, do they disagree, was it technically wrong or do they just not like the presenter. It’s hard to know with certainty when the feedback is 140 characters or less.

Twitter becomes the show

Danah Boyd, a Microsoft researcher, wrote a very open and enlightening blog post on her experiences at last years New York Web 2.0 Expo. In it she describes how the addition of audience participation via the live Twitter stream influenced her presentation in a very negative way. She remarks:

The problem with a public-facing Twitter stream in events like this is that it FORCES the audience to pay attention the backchannel. So even audience members who want to focus on the content get distracted. Most folks can’t multitask that well.

I experienced a similar situation last year at an event in London. Although the live Twitter stream was moderated, unlike in Danah’s case, I still found myself paying more attention to the “tweets” than the speaker. Often the audience laughed at new tweets, much to the amazement of the speaker who was in the throws of delivering a very important and serious point. It became distracting for both speaker and audience.

Equally had the speaker turned round and seen a screen full of personal or non complimentary remarks I am sure their talk would have been affected negatively.

Without question there’s a time and a place for Twitter streams. At Future of Web Apps London 2009 the live hashtag stream during the “Kevin and Gary” show became part of the show and worked really well. However I believe that it wouldn’t have worked so well during Kevin’s keynote. Context is key.

That means you can rescale them to any size you desire without any loss in quality. All of the icons also support transparency. The set was created by Aaron Richard. The icons are from four different sets: PICOL, Android Icons, Pictoico, and Freshpixel. All are licensed slightly differently under Creative Commons. Please respect their copyrights.

The last slide contains a series of 32×32 bitmap icons for popular social networking sites. These icons were created by Komodo Media, which has also graciously chosen to license them under the Creative Commons.

Architect Day: Frank Gehry

Frank O. Gehry is a world-renowned architect. His long career has many works from homes to the great museums that have become postcard towns.

Frank Owen Gehry was born in Toronto, Canada, February 28, 1929. He was a creative child who played with wooden sticks building small towns with his grandmother. He spent time drawing with his father, and his mother was the one who introduced him to the world of art.

“So the creative genes were there … But my father thought I was a dreamer, I wasn’t gonna amount to anything. It was my mother who thought I was just reticent to do things. She would push me.”

In 1947 he moved to California and attended Los Angeles City College, eventually graduating from the University of Southern California’s School of Architecture in 1954. He took a break from the practice of architecture, working in various sectors, but went back to school for one year to study City Planning at the Harvard Graduate School of Design

Influences

Gehry worked for the office, Wdton Becket & Associates, for Victor Gruen in Los Angeles, and for Remondet in Paris.

In 1962, he started his own office designing a wide variety of residential, commercial and institutional sites. And it was with his own house that he best gained notoriety for his work.

Works

Frank Gehry receives frequent criticism for his work because its architecture is very controversial and has unusual shapes and movements. But looking at his works, we can notice the trend and direction of his projects, as well as the concepts of his architecture. In purer forms, through the famous icons such as binoculars, to the organic volumes.

In some works, deconstructive provisions are clear, but when released to the organic shapes these features go beyond. Like it or not, the architecture of Frank Gehry is recognized and visited throughout the world, with postcard towns that were forgotten by tourism.

Twitter’s Most Influential Topics of 2009

In 2009, influence emerged as a source of filtering and focus, especially when Twitter released its new “lists” feature to empower users to organize and follow custom streams by topic, personality, and themes.

Klout, which analyzes content from millions of people to identify the top influencers on every topic, is one service that measures influence on Twitter. Klout today released its Top 2009 list of the topics that captured the attention of the most influential voices and their communities on Twitter.

Twitter recently published a Top 2009 Trends list, which essentially symbolized a digital microcosm of culture and conversations throughout the year. Klout’s list differs in the methodology used to organize it.

Per Klout’s announcement:

In 2009 we saw an explosion of users and content on Twitter. The “real-time stream” fed us information before the mainstream media could even react, user communities flexed their collective muscle and demonstrated the power of “word of mouth,” leaving companies to either ride the social wave or be subject to the wrath of millions of voices. There’s no denying it: in 2009, social media continued to profoundly change the way we communicate, the way we find and share information, and the relationship between brands and consumers.

Five Simple but Essential Web Usability Tips

The web has become a part of our lives. Folks from all walks of life, from upscale parts of New York to dirt road villages you probably will never hear of in Burundi, are all a part of what we call "the internet". The reasons they use the web is highly varied: it could be to search for news articles, directions to the nearest pub, the winter/fall clothing trends, post-grad research, or shopping for a handbag, the list is endless. It could be anyone too. It’d be impossible to try to classify web users in any particular demographic range.

On top of the web’s ubiquity, the web has gotten to an interactive all time high. Users don’t just seek information, they interact with it in more novel ways than we can ever imagine.

And it’s only going to get better: we are seeing a myriad of emerging web apps and website trends that are revolutionizing the way we use and obtain information on the web.

With this concept in mind, usability, how effortless it is to interact and use your website, is critical to its success. This article discusses five important usability tips that your site can’t live without.

1. Have a search feature

A basic site feature nowadays is a search feature. It allows your users to jump to the pages that may contain the information they’re currently seeking.

Locate the search box where users can immediately find it. Placing it on the top left or top right of the webpage will ensure that users see it almost immediately. Make it stand out.

The submit button can also be made to stand out by using vivid colors that fits the design theme.

The "GO" button on Amazon.com is bright orange, congruent with the company colors, to help users quickly see it.

Very often, the magnifying glass icon is used to associate the search function and is now becoming a reasonably identifiable symbol for "site search".

2. Pay special attention to web page organization and layout

The use of headings, lists, and consistent structure cannot be overly emphasized. Users tend to scan through web pages in an F-shaped pattern. They pick out what stands out from the rest of the text: headings, links, bold text and bullet points. Use headings and subheadings that are eye-catching so that users can focus on them and quickly process the content while scanning through the page.

Use CSS for layout and style where possible. This ensures that structure and presentation are kept totally separated, giving you an edge when it comes to experimenting on page organization and structure by trial and error.

3. Keep the user interface consistent

A good interface design influences user behavior, prompting them to take an action or route that will result in their desired outcome. This ultimately translates to saying that the design should be intuitive. Keeping the interface simple makes navigation easier for the user. First time users quickly become regulars if the interface design is clear and consistent.

Use a global navigation that appears on every page of your site in the same place. Make your buttons or links consistent with the central theme of the website. Choose the right color schemes.

Apple features a primary navigation that visually indicates what section you’re in.

When hovering over a primary menu item, it becomes recessed, indicating that it’s the focused element.

4. Structure web forms correctly

When you have web forms on your site, you want to make it as easy as possible to fill out. To illustrate key design tips for designing usable web forms, let’s look at the Yahoo! sign up form.

In the figure above, you can see that there are text hints in the input fields for First Name, Last Name, birth Day and birth Year so that there’s no ambiguity to the order that the input fields require. For example, there is no question as how to format your name: Last Name, First Name or First Name, Last Name.

You can remove these inline hints when the user focuses on the input field.

Group form items into logical chunks so that each section has a distinct topic; this makes it easier to quickly fill out form items.

In the figure above, you can see three logical groupings of web form input fields: (1) information about the user, (2) account information, (3) alternative contact information. Grouping it this way makes it easier to fill out related data in chunks.

Whenever a user performs a certain action, give them feedback and/or confirmation so that they aren’t left guessing as to whether they’ve filled out the form correctly or not. This avoids needless repetition of action (such as filling out the form again to ensure that they have in fact been successful in submitting it).

Shown above is how the Yahoo! sign up form deals with errors in filling out the web form. It gives instant inline feedback so that the user immediately knows that the information they provided is erroneous or lacking. The feedback provided for web form errors are: What the error is and suggestions on how to correct the errors.

5. Make help features available

A good user interface will be intuitive and logical enough so that users will know straight away what to do in order to get what they want, but the level of technical know-how that each user has will be different.

In addition, help features can be a way to prevent the user from being discouraged from using your site; if they can’t figure it out and there’s no way for them to seek help, then they’ll look for a site that they can figure out.

Ten years ago, my girlfriend flew home to celebrate new year’s eve in San Francisco, but I had to stay in New York to work, so we spent the turn of the millennium apart.

A friend of a friend threw a party. I attended, grumpily, as shown here.

Ten years ago, but it may as well have been a thousand. Everything is different now. Everything except that I am once again separated from those with whom I would most wish to mark the falling away of old things and the luminous beauty of new beginnings.

6 Tech Predictions That Helped Shape 2009 and 6 That Might Shape 2010

Since I’ve been at Mashable, my track record with year-end predictions has been pretty good. That’s probably because rather than making wild and sexy pontifications about what will happen in the year ahead (but almost certainly will not), I tend to just look at the trends of the past year and make educated guesses about how those will evolve.

Boring and predictable, perhaps, but also a good way to round up the year past (in our little part of the world) and talk about the year ahead. Below, a look back at 2009’s picks — six of which were pretty spot on — and some educated guesstimates for 2010. Happy New Year!

2009’s Report Card

Facebook and MySpace Become Aggressive Acquirers

Both Facebook and MySpace made a number of significant deals this year. Most notably, Facebook gobbled up FriendFeed, while MySpace pushed further into digital entertainment by acquiring both iLike and iMeem. With $100 million in fresh financing, Twitter also got into the acquisition game, buying up Mixer Labs to bolster its geolocation features. Look for this trend to continue in 2010, with mobile and geolocation startups making attractive targets for the big social sites (along with more traditional acquirers like Google and Microsoft).

The eBay Breakup

As expected, what I called “the Internet’s biggest holding company” began to dismantle. Skype was sold off to private equity firms and StumbleUpon was sold back to its original founding team. Wall Street seems to have responded positively to the refocus on ecommerce and payments, with eBay’s share price more than doubling from its lows of the year.

A Big Year for Amazon

One need look no further than Amazon’s share price to see the kind of year the company had. With its retail business continuing to flourish, its data services business gaining steam, and its Kindle becoming perhaps the hottest gift this holiday season, Amazon had a very big 2009 indeed.

Google Chrome Gains Meaningful Marketshare

One of the most aggressively marketed products in Google history, Chrome has been downloaded more than 40 million times, making it the third most popular web browser. Google finally launched a Mac version earlier this month, and with Chrome OS expected to make its debut on netbooks next year, Chrome is going to continue to be a force in the browser market.

At Least One Big Newspaper Goes All Digital

The implosion of print media continued in 2009, but as expected, newspaper outfits aren’t just hanging up their hats without a fight. The Seattle-Post Intelligencer and The Rocky Mountain news both ended their print editions, but continue to publish online editions (the latter at a new website started by former reporters) with a leaner staff and without the overhead of paper and trucks. This trend will only intensify in the next year.

Comments Become the New Blogs

This didn’t evolve quite as I saw it happening, but as the social stream came to prominence in 2009, our actions on third-party sites — like comments on blogs and news websites — became an important part of what’s being fed into our Twitter and Facebook streams.

Startup Incubators Flourish

The cost of launching a web startup continues to decline, and the incubator model continues to flourish. In addition to Y Combinator and TechStars, which continue to be launch pads for dozens of startups, other programs like Launch Box and Next Start are also providing an alternative to traditional funding. Local governments are even getting in on the low-cost startup game, with both New York and San Francisco launching programs to foster tech innovation.

Twitter Doesn’t Go Mainstream

This was one of my more controversial predictions last year, and although Twitter has grown many times over since then, it could be argued that Twitter is currently stalled just short of mainstream. Sure, everyone and their mother has heard of Twitter at this point, and it certainly has an awareness in the media and with big brands that isn’t going anywhere, but as I suggested, many are simply using the service passively — occasionally checking the tweets of a favorite celebrity, media outlet, or a friend — as opposed to using the service themselves. Twitter is still many orders of magnitude smaller than Facebook and MySpace, despite the latter’s continuing decline.

Predictions for 2010

Facebook Gets into Location and Payments

Location is hot on everyone’s 2010 prediction lists, and for good reason. Most new smartphones includes GPS, Twitter is integrating location (and making deals to bolster its capabilities), and startups like Foursquare and Gowalla are gaining traction. But the company that can and most likely will bring location mainstream is Facebook.

With your whole social graph already neatly organized on Facebook (close friends, strangers, people I friend because I have to) and the social network’s mobile apps already downloaded tens of millions of times across platforms, the company is in prime position to launch location features and dominate the space.

And while Location could be the feature that gives Facebook the staying power that previously dominant social networks lacked, it could be payments that make the company a financial powerhouse. Leveraging Facebook Connect, it’s conceivable that Facebook will launch a PayPal competitor, providing e-commerce sites with not just an easy way to accept payments, but also rich data about who their customers are based on their profiles and connections.

iPhone Launches on a New Carrier in the US

Along with Kanye West and Tiger Woods, AT&T sits near the top of the list for most-used punch lines of 2009 (I even managed to combine them this morning). Rest assured, Apple isn’t ignorant to the service issues its customers have been facing, and perhaps more convincingly, is fully aware they’re making more money in parts of the world where they don’t have iPhone exclusively on one carrier. Combine all that with the need to keep growing market share in light of increasingly worthy competitors and it’s very likely we’ll see iPhone on a new carrier in 2010 — most likely Verizon, but perhaps T-Mobile.

BlackBerry Loses Market Share

As someone who has used BlackBerry his entire working life (recently making me the butt of jokes among colleagues), it saddens me to say that I think 2010 is the year that the device finally loses some ground. When you consider the plethora of Android devices hitting the market and the potential of iPhone launching on a new carrier, someone has to be the loser, and that will likely be BlackBerry, whose interface and app selection sorely trails that of its competitors. Recent service outages also aren’t helping the cause.

Live Video Goes Mainstream and Becomes Immensely Profitable

We’ve recently highlighted some of the huge numbers that live web video broadcasts are generating. Much of that has to do with live video evolving from people turning on a webcam in their bedroom to professionally produced programming with celebrity talent, as highlighted by the recent Ashton Kutcher Katalyst HQ broadcast. In 2010, I expect this narrative to move from “wow, huge numbers” to “wow, it’s a real business” as top live video broadcasters are able to turn their programming into mini-media outfits with the help of sponsors.

Sell Outs: Twitter, Ustream, Foursquare or Gowalla

OK, so I lied, here are a few random guesses at some deals that might happen in 2010 (and why):

Twitter’s acknowledged that it has a growth problem. And while a business model appears to be coming together, selling out might start to look increasingly attractive if the company can’t reignite growth.

In line with my thinking that live video is going to go big in 2010, the web’s giants are going to want to get in on it. And Ustream, with its mature platform, celeb users and evolving business model, is the logical choice.

Facebook might build its own location features — or it might just buy them. In addition to getting both technology and teams by acquiring someone like Foursquare or Gowalla, Facebook would also get a potentially huge new business model to roll out to its existing base of advertising clients: location-based mobile ads.

More Paywalls … Some of Them Successful

One of the more compelling (if not overdramatized) media stories of the past year has been Rupert Murdoch’s plan to put up paywalls on News Corp. websites. Murdoch’s not alone in his vision of how to make more money online. Variety recently put up paywalls of its own, and along with easier ways to pay (Facebook, perhaps?), more media companies will try it in 2010. And I have a hunch that some of them (of the WSJ and Variety ilk) will be successful, at least in terms of making more profit, albeit from a smaller audience.

Jalen Rose: How Social Media Could’ve Changed My Career

This post is part of Mashable’s Fab Five series with Jalen Rose, which highlights trends in the social media space. Jalen Rose is a former 13-year NBA star and current ESPN basketball analyst but may be best known for being a member of the famous University of Michigan Fab Five.

As I look back at the journey that has led me to this point in my life, I have to say that I’ve been blessed to be a part of some pretty amazing situations. At times, I wish I could have had access to social media, so that I could have shared my experiences with the world. There are many, but here are five such moments.

1. South by Southwestern: Ustream

The legendary Coach Perry Watson led my Detroit Southwestern high school basketball team to a national championship my junior year. Our “up in your face, run and jump game” earned us a #1 national ranking by USA Today, and I may be the only athlete that can say he had two high school teammates who also went pro. The three of us (Howard Eisley, Voshon Leonard, and myself) each put in over ten years in the NBA. Playing in the Detroit Public School League gave us a frenzy filled gym that was always packed with die hard knowledgeable fans.

Ustream, a platform that allows users to video broadcast for an audience, would have been great to have on the infamous yellow team bus as we left the opposing hostile arenas. Fans would have been able to see just how much camaraderie the greatest high school team in Michigan shared. Even the chance to upload video from my Flip cam or off my phone to sites like YouTube, alone would have given the fans an inside look they would never have forgotten.

2. Fab Five Forever: Twitter

Ah, 1991-1992. This historic season captured the moment when the members of the Fab Five (Juwan Howard, Ray Jackson, Jimmy King, Chris Webber, and myself), who were college freshman at the University of Michigan, started against Notre Dame. Not only was this the first time a starting line-up consisted of all freshmen, but we took the world by storm in our baggy shorts, black socks and black shoes; a cultural phenomenon still in place today. The five of us scored every one of our team’s points during that nationally televised game. The intensity of this game was portrayed as “good vs. evil” and the announcers vilified us every chance they had.

If I was able, I would have definitely sent a tweet to the world before I left the locker room to let them know we were about to go down in history as the first group of all freshmen to start a game at UM and to make sure they didn’t miss it. I am a huge fan of Twitter and I think if it were available back then, the culture of basketball could have reached even more fans worldwide! We all would have been tweeting all the time, trying to spread our legacy.

3. Motown Style: Twitter, Facebook

In 1994, I was drafted in the first round by the Denver Nuggets.

As I prepared for the big day, it would have been great to have the capability to use Twitpic as I shopped for my draft suit. I would have used Twitter as well as Facebook to get opinions from my fans on which suit to wear on the big day I had dreamt about for years. Many people think my red pinstriped suit is one of the greatest draft suits of all time — as you look back at it, just remember it was 1994 and the style was definitely different back then. It’s a draft day classic that reappears every year leading up to and on NBA draft day.

4. The Bottom of the Barrel: Ustream

If only I could have used Ustream when I was traded, it would have been nice to officially say goodbye to my loyal fans who didn’t want to see me move on to another team. Some of the fans would have probably enjoyed being able to reach out to me to say goodbye as well.

Getting traded is quite an experience. Twice in my career, I was traded to the league’s last place team. After playing for the Pacers for six and a half years, I had to leave a team that had the best overall record in the NBA for the team with the worst – the Chicago Bulls. The same scenario occurred when I was traded from the Raptors to the Knicks, and what made this day unique was that the two teams were playing each other that night. I woke up a Raptor and ended up sitting on the Knicks bench a few hours later. I packed a few things during the day, and after the game, I had to get on their plane with my new team and head to New York. Even though I was on the wrong bench, the Raptors fans still gave me a standing ovation. Those were the kind of fans I wish I would have been able to reach out to on a personal level through Ustream.

5. Best of Both Worlds

Most people don’t realize that I began my media career during the NBA Finals in 2001, even though I didn’t retire until 2007. I was simultaneously playing basketball and broadcasting after my season came to an end each post-season. While I was still in the league, I was fortunate to be able to cover numerous sporting and entertainment events on media outlets such as TNT, ABC, and Fox Sports.

It would have really changed the game if I could have also involved social media back then. I’m a multimedia junkie now and would have definitely reached out through ALL social media outlets as well. The scoops that I could have delivered would have probably intrigued an even wider audience.

Looking back, I wonder how we did it without social media! Social media has truly given celebrities, entertainers, and athletes the ability to reach out to their fans across the world.

Mobile Problems Force Apology by Apple’s U.K. Partner

Smartphone users are starting to tax the capacity of mobile phone networks amid the surging popularity of Apple Inc.’s iPhone and other multimedia handsets from rivals like Palm Inc. — forcing a rare public apology from one of the U.K.’s top wireless providers.

In an interview published Tuesday, the head of Telefonica SA’s O2 U.K. division acknowledged the network problems encountered by some its customers in central London since the summer, and said the company is working to resolve them and investing in more 3G network capacity.

“Where we haven’t met our own high standards then there’s no question, we apologise to customers for that fact,” O2 U.K. Chief Executive Ronan Dunne told the Financial Times. He added: “But it would be wrong to say that O2 has failed its customers en masse.”

Across the U.K, there has been an 18-fold increase in data usage over the past year, said O2 spokesman Nick Wilkins, as users of high-end smartphones surf the Web or watch videos at a higher rate than other phone users. At the moment, data usage is doubling every four months, he said.

In February, O2 revealed it had more than one million iPhone customers in the U.K. Mr. Wilkins couldn’t provide any up to date figures. He also wouldn’t say how many overall smartphone customers it had.

O2’s two-year iPhone exclusively agreement in the U.K. came to an end recently following France Telecom SA’s Orange agreement to sell the iPhone. Subsequently, Vodafone PLC and Tesco PLC have secured similar iPhone deals.

On top of the £500 million already spent on its U.K. network over the last two years, O2 has spent a further £30 million in London since the summer trying to resolve the network problems, O2’s Mr. Wilkins said.

The O2 apology was the second time this week that heavy data usage by iPhone users has drawn questions. On Monday, AT&T Inc. resumed online sales of the iPhone to New Yorkers, after they were unable to buy the device phone on AT&T’s Web site over the weekend.

The interruption — and AT&T’s lack of explanation — was noted on several blogs, adding fuel to questions about whether the company’s network can handle iPhone traffic, especially in dense urban markets. A terse statement from AT&T Monday said “we periodically modify our promotion and distribution channels.” An AT&T spokesman declined to comment on why the carrier temporarily stopped online sales of the iPhone. – Niraj Sheth in New York and Archibald Preuschat in Dusseldorf contriibuted to this article.

Online iPhone Sales Interrupted In New York

UPDATE: AT&T resumed online sales of the iPhone to New York City residents Monday, after New Yorkers were unable to buy Apple’s popular phone on AT&T’s Web site over the weekend for unclear reasons.

In a holiday-shortened week, AT&T has spawned a raft of headlines on the Internet after the company halted online sales of the iPhone in New York City, at least temporarily. The phone is still available to New Yorkers in AT&T and Apple stores, however.

The decision has revived talk about whether AT&T’s network can handle the traffic generated by iPhone users, especially in dense urban markets. Owners of the iPhone tend to use the Internet much more than other wireless customers.

Although AT&T has beefed up its network, complaints about dropped calls and Internet interruptions seemed to have increased. That has spurred rivals such as Verizon Wireless to mock the quality of AT&T’s network in commercials.

An AT&T statement explaining its actions didn’t shed much light: “We periodically modify our promotion and distribution channels.”

When a user attempts to order the iPhone from AT&T’s Web site using New York City ZIP codes, AT&T’s Web site responded: “There are no phones and devices that match your search criteria.”

A blog called the Consumerist, apparently the first site to report the halt in online sales, quoted an AT&T customer-service representative saying “New York is not ready for the iPhone.” She subsequently added, “You don’t have enough towers to handle the phone,” the publication said.

Other AT&T representatives blamed excess fraud or said the online stock of iPhones available to New York customers had been depleted.

Whatever the cause, AT&T faces pressure to expand its network to match the increased usage by iPhone customers – 11 million and growing – as well as 70 million other AT&T wireless subscribers. In a worst-case scenario, AT&T might even have to consider raising prices for iPhone customers, who now pay a flat monthly rate for unlimited Internet access.

Ralph de la Vega, AT&T’s mobile-operations president, hinted at such a possibility in a presentation to investors earlier this month, though he later said a change in pricing policy is not imminent. He insisted AT&T is merely exploring a variety of methods to reduce the strain on its wireless network.

Google’s 2009: A Glimpse of the Web’s Next Decade

In 2009 the web as we knew it changed dramatically. Twitter graduated to become a media darling and a mainstream communication staple. Facebook became the most significant social network of this day and age. And Google changed the way we search.

When historians look back on 2009, they’ll be forced to acknowledge Google’s role in shaping the future of how we search, how we browse, how we communicate, how enterprises store information, and how the population at large has adapted to a web-rich mobile environment centered around applications.

Here’s a look back at Google’s big releases, major accomplishments, and a few faux pas in 2009.

Google in 2009: The Timeline

The Evolution of Search

Google started the year with 63.5% market share in the search space (source: comScore January 2009 data), with a commanding lead over its closest competitors Yahoo (20.5%) and Microsoft (8.3%). Facing competition from Microsoft’s overly-promoted new search entity, Bing, and the recently finalized acquisition of Yahoo! Search, Google spent 2009 modifying and enhancing the search experience like never before.

We first saw slight tweaks made to the search experience in March, with support for longer queries and related searches getting a semantic makeover. Then in April, Google search became more intelligent in relation to local search results, using your IP address to display multiple results to simple queries like “food” on a map. Of course, the bigger play here is to highlight local businesses, as Google would later make a not-so-subtle move to replicate Yelp with Place Pages and encourage vendors to display decals with QR codes.

Google also made efforts to improve search filtering options with the addition of time-based search options. They also experimented with the look of their iconic homepage, extending the search box, testing a permanent search sidebar, and switching to a fade-in homepage.

The social possibilities of search results became apparent when Google Profiles were added to search results for people queries. While insignificant when compared against the future release of Google Social Search, this was a carefully crafted maneuver to encourage Googlers to complete their profiles for more search relevance. Identity in search came full circle when the Google Labs experiment, Social Search, added relevant results based on content shared by friends associated with the social networks in your Google Profile.

Google Music Search made its debut late in October and offered up yet another new addition to the search experience: streaming audio previews for artist, album, song, and lyric searches powered by MySpace and Lala. The deal has major implications and could disrupt iTunes digital music market share, position Google as this generation’s billboard, and even make MySpace relevant again.

Of course, the search experience has forever been altered with the addition of real-time search. The initial announcement was made immediately after Bing touted their Twitter integration in October, but the rollout didn’t arrive until early December. We were all blown away by the fact that search results automatically update with fresh content from Twitter, Facebook Pages, MySpace, Yahoo! Answers and news articles in a real-time box on standard search results pages.

Though Google only made marginal gains in the search sector this year, finishing November with 65.6% share to Yahoo’s 17.5% and Microsoft’s 10.3, what’s important is that they continue to have a commanding lead and are clearly focused on improving the search experience into 2010, especially as it pertains to speed.

The Maturation of Gmail

After five years bearing the “Beta” tag, Gmail has finally shed its adolescent label. The move, though mostly symbolic, was accompanied by big improvements to the web-based e-mail service throughout the year. New additions worthy of mention include send and archive, offline support, undo, Google translate, and duplicate contact merging.

Unfortunately removing the Beta tag did not guarantee up-time, as Gmail suffered several debilitating outages over the course of the year, casting doubt on the notion that cloud-based apps have become more reliable.

Going Google for Business

Google spent much of 2009 attempting to attract enterprise customers for the Google Apps suite of products. The company even went so far as to place billboards in New York, Boston, Chicago, and San Francisco, targeting IT professionals and encouraging them to make the switch.

The campaign ultimately proved successful with two notable new customers: the City of Los Angeles and the US Government. The LA deal was announced in October, completed in December, and included a $7.2 million price tag. As for the US Government, they officially started pushing agencies to switch to Google Apps in September, with the White House launching Apps.gov to serve as a directory of cloud-based IT services.

Google Goes on a Spending Spree

To say that Google whipped out their credit card this year is quite the understatement. The search giant focused on acquisitions and investments to not only enhance their bread-and-butter search offering but to also solidify themselves as leaders in other territories.

The spending spree didn’t start until August of 2009, but once Google purchased On2 Technologies, a video compression company, for $106.5 million, they just kept on spending. The following month they acquired reCAPTCHA to apply the technology to improve Google Books. That purchase was followed by the yet-to-be-finalized AdMob acquisition for $750 million. The mobile ad network represents a huge opportunity for Google in the mobile advertising arena, but the deal is facing scrutiny from the FTC and consumer advocate groups who see the deal as anti-competitive in nature.

Most recently we’ve seen Google snatch up Teracent and AppJet. The later was primarily a talent acquisition, with plans to transition the engineers of EtherPad, a collaborative word processor, to Google’s Wave product development team. The former was motivated by Teracent’s impressive technology around targeted display advertising. Teracent can optimize ads in real-time to match a visitor’s location, language, and even adapt to the content on a website.

Despite rumors to the contrary, Google did not acquire Twitter this year. The two companies have developed a synergy around real-time search, with Bloomberg speculating that that the Twitter deal cost Google $15 million.

Chrome Blossoms

September was the one year anniversary of Google’s Chrome browser. Introduced in 2008, the browser began with a big name but lackluster feature set. All that changed in 2009, as incremental updates helped make Chrome competitive with Firefox and Safari.

Chrome version 3 introduced support for HTML5, promised a much faster experience, themes, and an enhanced Chrome Tab page. In December, Mac and Linux users were finally gifted with their own version of Chrome, though the newly released Chrome Extensions Beta is still Windows-only.

Perhaps even more significant than the improvements to Chrome, the browser, was the announcement that Google had also turned Chrome into an operating system.

Google Chrome OS is based off of the browser, open source, and slated to run on netbooks in 2010. In November, we were able to get up close and personal — thanks to new photos and video provided by Google — with Chrome, the 100% web-based operating system. We also learned that the browser is the OS, security is a priority, all apps are web apps, Chrome only works on netbooks, and it boots in seconds.

Mobile Maneuvers

Android skyrocketed to mobile operating system fame this year, with dozens of devices toting Google on the inside in the hopes of competing with Apple’s iPhone. While the OS currently only accounts for 3.5% of the whole market, it’s fast gaining ground and becoming a recognizable platform among consumers.

The king of all Android phones was none other than the heavily advertised — and TIME’s gadget of the year — Motorola Droid. And while sales have been impressive, rumors of Google’s own phone, the Nexus One, surfaced just a few weeks later.

The HTC device most certainly exists, and reports assert it will be sold by Google, with support from T-Mobile, as soon as January 5th. A real Google phone is bound to resonate with consumers, but the device could also splinter the Android market, creating angst between Google and manufactures and carriers selling Android-powered devices.

Wave Goodbye to 2009, Hello to the Future

A post on Google in 2009 would not be complete without paying proper attention to Google’s newest game-changing product: Google Wave. The May announcement brought instant fanfare from the entire blogosphere, creating an immediate demand for a product that only a small group of individuals had ever seen. As the September rollout date fast-approached, hype and anticipation hit an all time high. But as more and more individuals started receiving their invitations (that number is now upwards of one million), anticipation was met with confusion.

While we’ve already seen the platform used for spectacular and inspiring real-time collaboration purposes, the average person still struggles with how best to leverage the new communication medium. Of course it didn’t help that Wave was — and still is — every bit a preview version not ready for prime time. Some initial flaws, like the absence of undo, have since been corrected, but as it stands, Google Wave is a product with potential that is only being realized by a small minority.

New Years Eve: Watch Live Celebrations on Ustream

Want to check out New Year’s Eve coverage on your mobile phone or computer? You’re in luck; Ustream is ringing in the new year with live video streams of New Year’s Eve celebrations across the globe.

This year, you can watch the famous ball drop live in New York’s Times Square courtesy of the CBS News channel, catch a live stream of the Funchal Harbor fireworks (Guinness Book of World Records record-holder for the largest fireworks display) off the coast of Portugal on the Madeira channel starting at 6 p.m. EST or watch the Junkanoo Cultural Festival live at the Bahamas in the wee hours on January 1.

Architect Day: Jean Nouvel

Jean Nouvel today has one of the biggest architecture offices in France. With a wide variety of bold designs, he implements a new architecture separate from the modernist movement and postmodernism.

Son of two teachers, Jean Nouvel was born in Fumel in Lot-et-Garonne, France, on August 12, 1945. His family began to move frequently when his father became the chief superintendent of the local schools.

“Each new situation requires a new architecture.”

From the beginning his parents encouraged him to study mathematics and languages, but Nouvel had always been interested in the arts, and at 16 years of age, he had a deeper contact when he learned to draw with one of his teachers.

Influences

After not gaining acceptance to the Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Bordeaux, he moved to Paris, where he won first place in a national competition to enter the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts.

Between 1967 and 1970 he worked as assistant to the architects Claude Parent and Paul Virilio, who after a year, already designated him as project manager in charge of a large apartment complex.

Nouvel completed his course at age 25 and soon started his own partnership with François Seigneur. Between 1972 and 1984, he had 3 different partnerships with Lezen Gilbert, Jean-François Guyot, and Pierre Soria. In 1985, he formed the Jean Nouvel et Associés in 1988 and the JNec. His office works, Ateliers Jean Nouvel, was formed in 1994 with Michel Pélissié.

Works

Historically, Jean Nouvel has worked to create a stylistic language separate from the foundations of modernism and post-modernism. For this, he began each project with a mind free of preconceived ideas. Although at times he strays from traditional forms, Nouvel creates buildings that go beyond the traditional parameters.

Nouvel holds great concern for the environment of his projects, seeking a harmony between the work and its context. He consistently presents a fusion of elements of shadow, light and transparency.

AT&T Website Stops Selling iPhone in New York City [REPORT]

The AT&T website has stopped offering phones to the New York metropolitan area, and entering a zipcode from there delivers the message that it is “unavailable” in that area, according to a blog report. AT&T is continuing to sell iPhones in NYC stores.

After verifying this on the AT&T Wireless website, the Consumerist blog called up AT&T customer service and had this conversation:

Daphne: Welcome to AT&T online Sales support. How may I assist you with placing your order today?

Laura: Hi, I was looking at the iPhone 3Gs and the system tells me that I cannot order one in my ZIP code. My zip code is 11231. (Brooklyn, NY) Is this true? Are iPhones no longer available in New York City?

Daphne: I am happy to be helping you today . Yes, this is correct the phone is not offered to you because New York is not ready for the iPhone.

Daphne: You don’t have enough towers to handle the phone.

Laura: Thank you for your help. So the phone is not available to people anywhere in the city?

Daphne: Yes this is correct Laura.

The move echoes the sentiment of AT&T’s CEO earlier this month – he wants iPhone users to limit their usage to take the strain off his network. But to cut off website purchases to New York City seems like both a PR nightmare and a move that’s unlikely to make any difference: surely iPhone buyers will just pick up the phone elsewhere?

We sure hope the reports are wrong on this.

Update: BoyGeniusReport got a similar response from AT&T, thus confirming the reports. AT&T provided no reason to BGR why they’ve stopped selling iPhones to NYC residents.

Update 2: AT&T is now telling callers that it has stopped accepting online orders in NYC due to fraud.

GOOD is such a misnomer for a website with GREAT content and design. GOOD is looking for a Lead Web/Interaction Designer in the Los Angeles area.

This is a killer opportunity to work with an incredible team, led by the venerable Greg Storey (West Coast team). Happy Cog West is looking for a fantastic Lead Project Manager. “You should live in the San Francisco Bay Area, and you will ideally work out of our digs in Emeryville.”

I’d not heard of Flavors.me prior to their job listing. Their app (currently in private beta) allows you to create an elegant website aggregated from things like Twitter, Flickr, etc. (Watch the video.) They’re looking for a Python / Django Expert in the New York or San Francisco areas who’s interested in equity in the company and 100% medical/dental/vision coverage.

Superkix, a sister company to Flavors.me, is a search engine for “authentic sneakers” (nice adjective choice). They need a Ruby / Rails Expert. Same equity and healthy benefits as their sister site.

ZURB creates some pretty impressive web stuff. They need a Designer in their Campbell, California offices.

Beyond (love the logo) needs a Web Developer to join their studio “set in resplendent surroundings” in Maidenhead, UK. You’ll be working with LAMP and existing frameworks such as Expression Engine, Codeigniter, and Drupal.

Hallmark Channel needs an experienced Senior Print Designer who will collaborate with the Vice President of Video/Web and Print on a variety of print projects.

Scrapblog’s Flex-based online photo scrapbooking and printing app is stellar. I had the privilege of using the beta way back when, and they’ve continuously improved it. They need an Interaction Designer whose design and markup (XHTML/CSS/MXML) skills are as mad their “foosball and/or hackysack skillz.”

If you’ve got a penchant for horses, you’ve probably already heard of SmartPak, “the unquestioned leader in daily dose packaging of equine drugs and nutritional products.” They’re seeking a .Net Developer in the Plymouth, Massachusetts area.

I’ve done work for several colleges, so I know it’s not an easy challenge but it’s certainly a rewarding one. Texas A&M University needs a Web Developer to help develop and maintain the architecture, look and feel, and general elements of the site.

How’s this for a job title? Cloud Configuration and Infrastructure Engineer needed at Geodelic Systems, Inc., a “high-energy Santa Monica based startup company working on a groundbreaking location aware iPhone App.”

I’ve not heard of Patch before, but it looks like it’s the 2010 replacement to local newspapers. They need a Front-end Developer with “expert and up-to-date XHTML/Javascript/CSS coding skills” in the New York City area.

This looks like a good early-career position at a non-profit in Washington, DC. The American Institutes for Research is looking for a Web Production Associate.

User Interface Engineer needed at Facebook. I probably needn’t say more.

Architect Day: Richard Meier

Richard Meier’s work is easily recognized in most cases by the use of white and its uses. He established his own pattern of work, which today serves as the inspiration for great architects, forming a school of his architecture.

Richard Meier was born in Newark, New Jersey on October 12th, 1934. He studied architecture in Cornell University, graduating in 1957.

“I believe that architecture has the power to inspire, to elevate the spirit, to feed both the mind and the body. It is for me the most public of the arts.”

Influences

After college, Meier worked in several architecture offices. In 1959, he worked briefly for Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, after working for 3 years for Marcel Breuer.

In 1963 he started his own work in New York and already in 1972 was identified as one of The New York Five, together with Peter Eisenmanm, Michael Graves, Charles Gwathmey and John Hejduk.

Richard Meier was greatly influenced by architect Le Corbusier, using many of his ideas in his work. Mies Van der Rohe and Frank Lloyd Wright were also extremely important for his career.

Works

Meier has a concept of designing very clear and his works are easily recognized. Over time one can see the consistency and dedication in his work which forms his philosophy in all works. His more recent works, however, show a greater refinement compared with his first projects.

Richard Meier has done countless residential projects, all with interesting variations on the theme while every solution maintaining a great aesthetic quality and functionality. In 1984 he received the Pritzker Prize, rewarding a great career and a great variety of work performed.

Eccentric Photographs by Ryan McGinley

This is the kind of stuff that gets me really excited…pictures that look like they were taken from a low budget sci-fi flick from the 70′s. I love it. New York based photographer, Ryan McGinley seems to capture this general aura of mystery in his shots. When I look at them I get confused because I find that I really have no idea what’s going on (especially in those cave pictures). I love it when photos do that to me.

I’m also really digging Ryan’s distinctive use of color and lighting. Oh, and naked people. I just really, really love when photographers (and artists in general) step out of the box and run with their kooky ideas. What can you use the application for?

Lifestream.fm is a social media and services aggregator that combines all of the user’s online activity into one continuous, real-time stream. The service is currently capable of aggregating content from 60 different social networking services. Viewers of a user’s lifestream will see all of the user’s activity from all of the services they use. The services include blogging platforms, presence applications like MySpace and Facebook, and social bookmarking sites such as Digg and Delicious. Other users can comment on any item in a user’s lifestream, and users can mark individual items as favorites. Users can have friends on the site – the registration process gives the user the opportunity to invite users imported from their address books in Gmail, Yahoo Mail, Outlook and others. The registration process also prompts the user to add all of their services to their lifestream.
Users have a My Lifestream page, where they can see their recent activity, their friend’s recent activity, recent comments about items in their lifestream, and their list of Favorites. Users can choose to view the lifestream of the entire site in real time, browse the site by tags, or search the site for keywords. Any activity found on Lifestream can easily be sent to the user’s mobile phone. In addition, the site offers an Adobe Air application which brings the Lifestream site to the user’s desktop. Users can also choose to be notified by email when someone comments on their Lifestream. Users also have an Account Settings page, where they can make changes to their profile, add or delete services from their Lifestream and change their email or password.

What is the history and popularity of the application?

New York, NY-based Lifestream.fm was founded in April 2008 by Juan Xavier Larrea. The site continues to add new services to its list of compatible services.

What are the differences to other applications?

Competition to Lifestream comes from sites such as Tumblr and Soup. Both of these sites have the ability to incorporate outside services into the user’s lifestream. They both also offer an update feature which allows the user to use them as a presence application as well. Lifestream does not offer the user the ability to add updates to the user’s lifestream.

How does the application look and feel to use?

The Lifestream.fm site has a clean and uncluttered look and feel. The site is very responsive, and page loads happen quickly. The user’s lifestream is updated in real-time, and this feature is quite responsive as well, with updates from other services appearing in the user’s lifestream in a matter of a few seconds in most cases. Navigation is intuitive, with a convenient top menu bar provided on all pages of the site. The send to mobile feature works well, as does the Adobe Air desktop application. There is no advertising displayed on the Lifestream.fm site.

How does the registration process work?

Registration to the Lifestream.fm site is free and is required to add a lifestream to the site. The registration process asks for username, email address and password. Validation of the email address is required, and clicking on the validation link prompts the user to enter their profile details, add their services and invite their friends to join Lifestream.

What does it cost to use the application?

There is no premium membership offered to the Lifestream site, and registered users have access to all features of the site.

Who would you recommend the application to?

The Lifestream.fm site is recommended to anyone who would like to incorporate all of their online activity into one continuous update stream. The site works well with the 60 services it is currently compatible with, and does a good job of providing a real-time lifestream of the user’s activity on the web.
