But everything that’s great about webOS comes in a heavy, chunky, plastic-y and cheap feeling TouchPad. It’s a disappointing experience that detracts from the great features of the operating system. And this is only one of the problems with the tablet – it also has issues with its Web browser, Flash, a still paltry app catalog and more.

A Chunky, Heavy TouchPad

To be fair, the TouchPad is only a bit heavier than the original iPad (1.6 lbs vs. 1.5 for the iPad), but it’s much heavier than the iPad 2 (1.33 lbs). At 13.7 mm thick, it feels larger, heavier, and clunkier. And it is. The Motorola Xoom is a more apt comparison for the TouchPad (12.7 mm), while the thickness (or rather, the thinness) of the iPad 2 is 8.8 mm.

The problem with the TouchPad is that it was clearly positioned to compete with the iPad in its design – which it does, of course – but Apple had moved on to the iPad 2 before the TouchPad came to market. HP’s TouchPad, at launch, already feels out of date.

Size, weight and thickness are important factors when considering a tablet – even small improvements in this area lead to big jumps in terms of portability. As for the TouchPad, the overall feel is one of “computer without keyboard” or “better than a netbook,” not “cool, thin tablet.”

As for its other specs, the TouchPad is a better competitor when compared with both the Xoom and iPad, offering 1 GB RAM, 16 or 32 GB of storage, a 1.3 megapixel camera, 1024×768 resolution and 1.2 GHz dual-core Snapdragon processor. (Comparisons to other tablets are here).

But at the end of the day, the TouchPad fails on two key fronts: apps and, as noted above, portability. WebOS is lovely, but it’s not enough.

WebOS: Lots to Like

There are those out there who will prefer the TouchPad simply because it runs webOS. Created by Palm, now owned by HP, webOS is an attractive and functional alternative to Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android. It’s a bit more complex than Apple’s operating system, but not as geeky and technical as Android sometimes feels.

There are some very specific things that webOS does differently, and does well:

• Cards: Possibly the most notable feature of webOS, “card stacks” are how the operating system handles app switching. As you’re multitasking, groups of open applications are stacked together as cards (think: deck of playing cards). You can easily switch between these groups by swiping left or right on the homescreen. You can also shuffle the cards around in any stack, and, when finished, drag a card off the top of the screen to close the application.
• System-wide notifications: The OS updates you on things like new emails, social networking updates, events and more. For true webOS fans, the tablet pairs with a Palm Pre, allowing you to also receive your SMS and MMS messages on the TouchPad. Notifications are less obtrusive than they are on the current version of iOS, by appearing on the top-right of the screen, not as pop-ups in the middle. However, this feature probably seemed more innovative prior to Apple’s reveal of the soon-to-launch iOS 5, which brings with it a new notifications center that mimics the one in Android, and essentially ends the complaints about iOS’s disruptive notifications.
• Just Type: WebOS’s universal search features lets you search your device, the Web or perform common actions like starting an email, adding a calendar appointment, updating your Facebook status, and more.
• Synergy: This webOS feature pulls in your contacts, calendars, emails and photos from multiple services (Google, Exchange, MobileMe, Yahoo, Facebook, etc.), which makes the TouchPad function as a centralized hub for many of the services you want to use.

I would add the “Touch to Share” (content moving) feature to this list, too, as it’s certainly unique to the webOS experience, but it requires users to also have an HP Palm Pre. That’s not most people. For webOS fans buying into the whole ecosystem, it’s great, but it’s not a selling point for the average person debating about tablet purchases.

There are dozens of other good to great features in webOS, too, including its resizable keyboard with a number row at the top (thank you!), built in Skype support, curated app discovery service “Pivot” (a magazine style tool for finding apps), built-in printing support (for HP printers, of course), an included copy of QuickOffice, decent mapping via Bing, a music player called HP Play offering iTunes playlists and library import, and more.

Apps, Apps…Apps?

There are several popular, well-known apps for the TouchPad, including Facebook, Bing Maps, Kindle, Skype, YouTube, QuickOffice, Angry Birds, TIME, USA Today, Weatherbug and others. Spaz HD is available to serve as a Twitter client.

But the TouchPad has only 300 native tablet apps at launch in addition to around 6,200 non-optimized apps designed for phones. What this means is that you won’t serendipitously discover those special apps like you’ll find on iPad, whether something like the iPad-only Flipboard social magazine, or the Apple-only iMovie and GarageBand. Nor will you find deeply integrated Google experiences, like Android users have with apps for Gmail, Docs and other Google applications and services.

Browser

The shortage of apps wouldn’t matter as much if the Web browser lived up to its claims. Recently, Sencha reviewed the HTML5 performance on the TouchPad and found it lacking, unfortunately. (You can read more on that here). This is disappointing for the Web developer community who had hoped that HP’s implementation of WebKit would mean an app platform built on standard Web technologies like HTML5 and CSS3.

In addition, the included Flash support didn’t work as well as one would hope (if you sit around hoping for things like Flash, instead of purposely avoiding it by purchasing Apple devices). Some sites take too long to load, others don’t load properly at all, and Flash performance is often choppy and stuttering. You can choose to disable Flash, at least.

Conclusion

Although this is far from being a comprehensive review of everything TouchPad (check your favorite gadget blog for that), we found webOS to be a promising mobile operating system with several unique features. However, in its current implementation and form factor, webOS is not delivering as stellar a performance as we would have liked. The hardware is heavy and dated, especially in comparison with the iPad 2, the app ecosystem isn’t large enough and the browser not functional enough to serve as a Web app platform. While webOS makes for a compelling alternative to the iPad alternatives, it’s not a compelling alternative to the iPad itself.

Many clients may demand a mobile version of their website – one for the Blackberry, another for the iPhone, the iPad, netbook, and even the Kindle. How does one accommodate this growing population? In this article I will describe the growing prevalence of Responsive Design and factors you should consider when designing for mobile visitors.

What is Responsive Design?

Responsive Web design is the approach that suggests that design and development should respond to the user’s behavior and environment based on screen size, platform and orientation. The practice consists of a mix of flexible grids and layouts, images and an intelligent use of CSS media queries. The website should accommodate for:

• Resolution

• Image Size

• Scripting Abilities

In short, a website should have the technology to respond to the user’s preferences.

Taking A Closer Look

In creating a Responsive Website, your goal is to accommodate the user’s viewing device, such as the iPhone. A Responsive Website can be achieved through these short features:

• The site must be built with a flexible grid foundation.
• Images that are incorporated into the design must be flexible themselves.
• Different views must be enabled in different contexts via media queries.

A responsive web design will usually use CSS @media queries to style the page according to specific rules, such as min-width.

Flexibility

Part of any good web design in these modern times is a flexible grid. This practice will accommodate a variety of browsers already that demand the design be flexible and fluid.

Grid

• Defining your own parameters for columns, spacing and containers is often the best solution for a web design and can be just as flexible as any existing system out there.
• Size and spacing are the two main components to focus on in creating your flexible grid system.

• In place of pixels, use ems and percentages as your units of measurement.

Tiny Fluid Grid is a great tool for creating fluid grids. It lets you make grids with up to 1200px maximum widths, and is based on 1kb grid.

This sample website is on a flexible grid that changes the layout depending on the size of the browser’s viewport.

Images

Another feature of Responsive Web Design is images that move and scale with your flexible grid.

• To maintain fast loading times, use images of a manageable size. Using the width and height attributes to scale them for more text content on smaller devices isn’t a good usability practice.

• An alternative to scaling is cropping. The CSS overflow property (e.g. overflow: hidden) gives us the ability to crop images dynamically as the containers around them shift to fit new display environments.

• The option is available to have multiple versions available of the same image and then serve up the appropriate sized version depending on the user.

• Finally, you have the option to hide images altogether. Media queries that serve up a stylesheet which sets the display: none property for images takes care of this function.

Unstoppable Robot Ninja has a simple script that automatically resizes your images.

Zomigi allows you to selectively hide parts of your image dynamically.

Media Queries

Media queries allow designers to build multiple layouts using the same HTML documents by selectively serving stylesheets based on the user agent’s features, such as the browser window’s size.

Other parameters Media Queries deal with:

• Orientation

• Screen Resolution

• Color

Media queries and responsive design allow us to think outside of the constraints of a screen size or resolution and start building websites that flexibly adapts to all mediums.

NET magazine offer some insightful info on the history of responsive or adaptive website designs and the introduction of the media query module along with tips on how to implement such features yourself.

Understanding Its Value

There are obviously a lot of benefits towards getting behind Responsive Design as the number of mobile users continues to rise. It’s important to note, however, that before you go redesigning your website to first evaluate who the current users are that are coming to your site and what they’re using to access it. Responsive Design may not really be needed for some sites than others, and is best to address the topic on a case-by-case basis.

The web is growing and with it comes a world of possibility of designers and developers who wish to pursue it.

When I first bought my netbook from Acer it came with the  Windows 7 Starter (scam) Edition. Luckily for me I had an extra Home Premium license I could use. Problem was that the graphics driver needed was not available for download, and was not available through Windows. A fact I only discovered once I had re-installed windows. Another irritating thing I discovered was that the bundled software that was pre-installed with my windows starter edition, did not run anymore.

The solution? The hidden recovery partition.

Most new computers today comes with pre-installed Windows and bundled software. These licenses or programs does not come with an installation disk, package or user-manuals. Instead the setup files (or recovery disk) is stored in a hidden partition on your hard-drive, together with various extra drivers and tweak files. At the end of this article I will show you where to look for the files and how to retrieve them, but first lets unhide the partition. To unlock or get access to this hidden partition we need to unhide it. This can be achieved using the built-in DiskPart Tool. You can choose to get access to the disk on a one-time basis or permanently assigning a drive letter for it. In most cases you are able to assign a drive letter using the Windows Disk management tool. The Recovery Partition is normally set to have no drive letter by default. We can override this feature by using Diskpart.

Diskpart

Diskpart is a Command Line Utility which allows us to control every disk and partition on our system. We have shown you different uses for this tool on occasion, and this time we will use it to get access to the hidden partition. To make a hidden partition available we need to assign a drive letter, and this is how:

1. Click Start-button and type DISKPART and press Enter.
2. Click OK when the UAC prompt you
3. In the Diskpart Dialogue Window, type: list disk This will show you a list of the disks  installed on your computer.
4. Type Select Disk 0 (where zero is the disk we want to use, if you have more that one disk you might want to try accessing one by one until you find the right one)
5. Type List Partition. You will see a list of all partitions on the drive, in my case there are two. One large and one small. The small one is the one we want to change. You can also identify the hidden partition by the fact that there are no drive letter assigned to it.
6. Type Select Partition 1 (Where 1 represent your partition)
7. Type Assign If successful you should get an Auto-run dialogue.
8. Type Exit to close the Diskpart Tool.

Hidden on reboot…

On some computers the partition will be hidden again on the next boot. This is due to a setting called “nodefaultdriveletter”, which tells windows that the partition is to be hidden by default. If you would like to keep the partition visible,  you will have to change the setting.

1. Open the Diskpart tool
2. Type Select Disk 0
3. Type List Partition
4. Type Select Partition 1 (Replace 1 with the corresponding letter)
5. Type Detail Partition This will display the settings for your partition. If the Type is set to 27 the partition is set as hidden.
6. Try one of the following commands: Set ID=07 OVERRIDE attributes volume clear hidden
7. Type Assign to assign a drive letter.
8. Type Exit to close the Diskpart Tool.

The next time you boot your computer the partition will still be visible.

Looking through the Recovery Partition Folder

Now it’s time to do a bit of digging inside the Folders. The location of drivers and software will vary depending on your brand or computer type. In my case, everything I need is  hidden inside the ACER-HQ1 folder. You will see many different folders containing everything from Windows Recovery or setup-files, drivers and the licensed software that came bundled with your computer. The content of these folders will most likely be WIM-files or images. The Windows Imaging Format (WIM) is a file-based disk image format (like ISO, RAR and ZIP). It was developed by Microsoft to deploy its latest Windows operating system releases, Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008, which use it as part of their standard installation procedure. It works equally well with older versions of Windows.

Windows Setup Files Found in the Recovery Partition

Accessing WIM-Images

To access the contents the WIM-files you need a WIM capable reader. I suggest you use WinMount which works similar to WinRAR, but allow you to mount WIM-images temporarily.

Inside a WIM-image you will usually find 2 folders and a xml-file (it may vary). Usually the content you seek is within the folder named 1 (one). After mounting you might need to copy the contents to a new folder before installing the program or driver. Once you have done that, you can install the software as you please.

Bundled software licenses

In order to make sure you don’t install the bundled software onto other computers most setup files have a CMD-file attached to it. This is a scriptfile that will check the identity of your computer before allowing the setup to start. Delete this file to avoid it from running.

The serial is usually found inside an INI-file or a XML-file. And that should be all you need to know. Good Luck

Google has stopped shipping the CR-48 notebook, the first pilot Chrome OS device, and is preparing for the next phase of its release.

Google VP of product management Sundar Pichai spilled the beans earlier today on Twitter. “Sorry we have shipped all units for now,” Pichai said.

The Google exec also reconfirmed that the first Chrome OS devices will go on sale this summer. Acer and Samsung were among the first companies to commit to shipping Chrome OS devices back in December.

First announced in 2009, Chrome OS is an operating system designed for the web. It boots up in seconds and can update itself, but most importantly, it only runs web apps. It is Google’s attempt to get people to ditch their desktops and use the web even more.

Since its debut in 2009, however, tablet devices like the Xoom and the iPad 2 have dominated the market and changed the computing landscape. Netbook sales are plummeting while tablet sales are skyrocketing.

So Google is entering the next phase of the Chrome OS development cycle — but it’s unclear whether there’s a market for a web-based OS in an iPad world.
