As designers we are often told to think outside the box when we approach any new project. This change in perspective is supposed to grant us access to seeing the design differently than we normally would. To break out of that mold or routine that we can easily get sucked into, and have a fresh new view of it all. Photographers have a knack for changing the way we see the world, and one way they do so is through macro photography. Showing us the power and beauty in this alternate perspective.

Today we have collected some stunning examples of macro photography that are sure to inspire, and can hopefully stir you from your routine and usual perspective. These wonderful captures demonstrate the delicate and subtle construction of nature, ones that we often overlook from our usual perspective. But with the aid of the photographers lens, we can get a closer look and see the world from a completely different angle.

Many times it takes a unique perspective to find beauty in a place that you may not otherwise have looked. Macro photography shows objects in nature and other aspects of life in a way that brings out a new kind of beauty.

The following macro photographs are sure to inspire beautiful work for any designer. Whether you are looking for inspiration for backgrounds of business cards or artwork for web design, enjoy the brilliant macro photographs below.

The brilliant purple is stunning but the water drop is the real star of this photograph. The crisp clarity of the light and images reflected in the water are amazing.

Once again the water is the real focus, but the shape and color of these petals are not to be overlooked. The color combination in this photograph could be brilliant on business cards.

At first glance, this photograph may startle you. The more you look at it, though, the richer the colors and the more intense the eye becomes. It almost appears to move.

Intricacy in nature is certainly exemplified in this photo. The design of a web becomes a work of art up close.

With crisp clarity, this caterpillar shows character that you may never have imagined without the up close introduction. The color scheme that nature has provided would be great for a high energy design.

Though the subject of a fly is normally not lovely, this photograph is amazing. Beautiful details normally hidden have come to life.

In this photograph the water droplets magnify the tiny nuances of this vibrant leaf. Once again, the color combination is amazing.

If an ant can carry 50 times their weight and team work is still necessary then I think that ants are a great example for us. This image can be used to inspire great attitudes as well as design.

What I love about this image is the stark contrast of deep red, bold white, and complete black. The air bubbles create a design of their own as well.

The beautiful image of the light on a delicate flower sets a lovely background for the bold yellow. Nature really has given us a foundation for color palettes that amaze.

Speaking of color palettes, this clear purple and bold orange pieces on the flower look stunning against the blurred green and pink. The focus effect is incredible!

To me this image is pure happiness. The flawless open blooms are being enjoyed by the delicate and complex butterfly. The clarity of this photograph is wonderful.

An up close look at this simple piece of rope shows that it is not so simple. The depth of color and detail make this image a powerful one that could be used in many a design.

Machinery can be representative of work and strength. The textures and lines of this photograph give it life.

Even the tiniest parts of nature hold so much complexity. What a wonderful display of photography.

The shimmering eyes of this terrifying spider have a very space like quality, especially with the spider crawling across a CD.

While the soft surface of this honey bee are the true focus of this work of art, the colors of the background make this photograph lovely.

This drop of water shows of the many facets of water. Such elegance in this photograph would make for a beautiful piece of art on a wall.

Lovely little lady bug with a pretty leaf to perch on makes a wonderful picture.The angle is brilliant!

The soft gradient of color and shape make this image a great inspiration for design. The water drops on the lips are a nice detail.

Once again, detail in the tiniest parts of nature can be scary and stunning at the same time.

Brilliant colors make the symmetry of this wisping plant look beautiful. Such a soft yet eye-catching photo would be beautiful as the background of business cards or on a brochure.

This simple water droplet is captured in amazing clarity. It reflects the images around it while resting in the bold colors of a leaf. Beautiful art!

Build a High-Speed Laser-Triggered Photography Rig to Capture Split Second Exposures [DIY]

Photographing things that happen in a split second—like a drop of water hitting a puddle—is difficult enough, but when the subject of the photo is in motion, like a flitting honey bee, it requires laser-triggered precision.

The photo above was captured by a Belgian photographer that has fused his enthusiasm for photography and electronic wizardry into one hobby. His photography rig is a technological sight to behold, the camera is flanked by flashes and two arms that have infrared lasers which act as a trigger for the shutter. Check out the picture below to see him at work in the field with the rig:

For those of you who are unfamiliar with macro photography, especially that of insects, a bit of explanation on just how awesome his franken-camera is. In my personal collection (I am a professional photographer) I have at most a dozen photos that come even remotely close to the awesomeness of his insect macros.

When you’re trying to photograph a bee in flight using a powerful macro lens, you’re entirely at the mercy of the bee. You have to set up your camera, get it incredibly steady, and hope that a bee will come into the tiny field of focus you have. If you get a perfectly crisp shot of a bee in flight about to alight on a flower, that means you managed to luck out and have a bee fly into the tiny business-card thin depth of field window your macro lens provides and you snapped the picture at the exact 1/100th of a second that was occurring.

The beauty of his rig is that the lasers which trigger the shutter of the camera are aligned perfectly in the exact sweet spot of the lens. Using the rig you can’t miss a shot because the shot only occurs when the action is occurring in the frame and in focus. (I am so envious of this amazing setup!)

If you have no intention of building such an elaborate rig, we’d still suggest taking a peek at his galleries. His work is amazing and the type of ten-thousandth-of-a-second exposures he captures like a mosquito—a mosquito!—in flight are incredible. Over the recent months we’ve been presenting various showcases of photography – while many readers hated the showcases, most readers found them inspirational and perfect for a lousy workday’s morning. However, what we should have done in the inspirational posts is not just provide you with some inspiration for your work, but also present useful photographic techniques which can help you to achieve optimal pictures for your designs. And as requested by many of you, now it’s time to correct our mistake.

In this post we present useful photographic techniques, tutorials and resources for various kinds of photography. You’ll learn how to set up the perfect environment and what techniques, principles and rules of thumbs you should consider when shooting your next perfect photo. This round-up isn’t supposed to be the ultimate one – please feel free to suggest more useful articles in the comments to this post.

1. High Speed Photography

DIY – High Speed Photography at Home
This guide describes how to capture super fast movements using ordinary camera gear and a little home made electronics. It describes the setup used, the common problems and what can be done to solve them.

Home-Made High Speed Photography (PDF)
Pictures of high-speed events such as popping balloons, breaking glass, and splashing liquids reveal interesting structures not visible to the naked eye. With this guide you can take your own high-speed photos to captures these ephemeral events. A very detailed tutorial.

Quick guide to Simple High Speed Macro Photography
This is a quick tutorial to get you started with high speed photography. There are tons of other resources on the web, but most of them are advanced and require special equipment. This one is simple and basic.

2. Tilt-Shift Photography

Tilt-shift photography refers to the use of camera movements on small- and medium-format cameras; it usually requires the use of special lenses.

“Tilt-shift” actually encompasses two different types of movements: rotation of the lens relative to the image plane, called tilt, and movement of the lens parallel to the image plane, called shift. Tilt is used to control the orientation of the plane of focus (PoF), and hence the part of an image that appears sharp; it makes use of the Scheimpflug principle. Shift is used to change the line of sight while avoiding the convergence of parallel lines, as when photographing tall buildings.

Another, less cost-intensive technique called “tilt-shift miniature faking” is a process in which a photograph of a life-sized location or object is manipulated so that it looks like a photograph of a miniature-scale model.

10. RAW Processing

A raw image file contains minimally processed data from the image sensor. Raw image files are sometimes called digital negatives, because they serve the same role as negatives in film photography. But unlike negatives, these files need much more processing.
