			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Isobar&#8217;s Rob Larsen suggests that there is often a need to build CSS selectors dynamically when building applications. &#8221;This is typically some existing pattern paired with a loop counter or something pulled from a data attribute,&#8221; he writes on his <a href="http://htmlcssjavascript.com/javascript/var-selector/">blog</a>. His choice is to create a variable called &#8221;selector&#8221; and &#8221;to craft the selector on its own line.&#8221; This is then passed into jQuery. He shows <a href="http://htmlcssjavascript.com/javascript/var-selector/">a simple example</a>.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>A while ago, the popular tech blog <a href="http://techcrunch.com/" title="TechCrunch">TechCrunch</a> launched a new design for their website. Along with this design, they released a new logo. I wanted to generate this logo in HTML using <a href="http://jquery.com/" title="jQuery">jQuery</a>.</p>
<div>
    <img src="http://www.marcofolio.net/images/stories/programming/webdesign/techcrunch_logo.png" alt="HTML TechCrunch Pixellogo" />
</div>
<p>This logo looked like the perfect candidate to do so, since it uses huge pixels and only a couple of colours (4 shades of green). With only little HTML, CSS and jQuery, I was able to generate this logo with not much effort.</p>
<div><a href="http://demo.marcofolio.net/techcrunch_logo/" title="Demo HTML TechCrunch Pixellogo"><img src="http://www.marcofolio.net/images/stories/demo.png" alt="Demo HTML TechCrunch Pixellogo" /></a>&nbsp;&nbsp;<br />
<a href="http://www.marcofolio.net/downloads/webdesign/pixellogo_from_techcrunch_in_html/download.html" title="Download HTML TechCrunch Pixellogo"><img src="http://www.marcofolio.net/images/stories/download.png" alt="Download HTML TechCrunch Pixellogo" /></a></div>
<p>Did you check out the demo to see what we&#8217;re going to do? This is how you can generate this pixellogo yourself!</p>

<p>If you want scalable headlines on your fluid or responsive layout, look no further than <a href="http://fittextjs.com/">FitText</a>. It’s a jQuery plugin that makes big type flexible, forcing it to fill the width of the containing parent element.</p>
<h3>Easy jQuery documentation</h3>

<p><a href="http://twitter.com/commondream"></a>It&#8217;s impossible to remember every available method in jQuery, so when I&#8217;m working on front end code using jQuery I&#8217;m usually digging through their documentation as well. Instead of using the jQuery site, though, I browse jQuery&#8217;s documentation on <a href="http://jqapi.com/">jqapi.com</a>. It&#8217;s a site that format&#8217;s jQuery&#8217;s documentation much more cleanly and provides a search that&#8217;s really easy to use.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Today our task is to create a simple WordPress plugin to relate posts as a series. With this, when you  create a new post it is automatically listed in your series, so if a user is reading any post of the series he can jump to others, even posts created after that one he is reading.</p>
<p>It may seem a bit too simple, but with this we can learn a lot about:<br />
1. Custom post types<br />
2. Custom fields<br />
3. Metaboxes<br />
4. Actions<br />
5. Shortcodes<br />
6. Basic plugin structure for WordPress<br />
7. Little bit of jQuery<br />
So, let&#8217;s rock!</p>
<p><span></span></p>
<h2>Step 1 &#8211; Planning</h2>
<p>Before any coding, we need to know what we want to create, so we don&#8217;t get lost in the process. There are a lot of tools and ways to use them to help us. The most important thing is to ensure that you at least know the minimum requirements for the project you&#8217;re working on, what you can add or cut down, and how things must work.</p>
<p>Our plugin functions list is:</p>
<ol>
<li>Create a new series, with title, description and posts assigned to it</li>
<li>Add / remove current post to series (from post edit screen)</li>
<li>Theme &#8211; Show other posts from series via shortcodes</li>
<li>Theme &#8211; Show other posts from series via function (so you can use in your theme)</li>
<li>Create fake series items, for future posts</li>
<li>Edit title of the post when listed in series (it doesn&#8217;t have to be post&#8217;s WordPress title)</li>
</ol>
<p>As long as we are using a CMS with a lot of built-in functions we won&#8217;t need to worry about external tables, SQL and many other functions that could take a little more time to create.</p>
<p>We can use custom post types to store data, by creating a simple custom post type structure and assign meta fields to it, so we don&#8217;t need any additional tables, or any complex changes, we will just use WordPress&#8217; built-in functions. Just write a few lines and you are ready for it.</p>
<p>(Actually <a title="Store Information via Custom Post types" href="http://gilbert.pellegrom.me/store-information-in-wordpress-without-even-mentioning-the-database/">I&#8217;ve stolen Gilbert Pelegron&#8217;s idea</a>, who has explained it much better than me. So, to dig a little deeper, check his post )</p>
<p>With this in mind, we can start to think more specifically about which data we will store and process. At this point we create a simple representation of how data should be stored, so we have all the data we need, without redundancy (so we just get the data from one point). There are a lot of ways to do it, but my idea is to save most data in our series entity, so when we get the series all needed data comes together (without additional calls). In this model, our post entity will just have to store which series it belongs to, and the rest is with the series.</p>
<p>As a simple way to represent it, I&#8217;ve made an <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Entity-relationship_model">entity-relationship diagram</a>, with a little help from <a href="http://www.gliffy.com">gliffy</a>.</p>
<p><a rel="attachment wp-att-45551" href="http://www.1stwebdesigner.com/wordpress/wordpress-plugin-development-relate-posts-as-a-series-%E2%80%93-part-1-2xxx/attachment/diagram/"><img src="http://www.neurosoftware.ro/programming-blog/wp-content/plugins/wp-o-matic/cache/76e94_diagram6.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="425" /></a></p>
<p>As you can see, our post type series will store almost all data, for a better performance. And its attributes is:</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>ID </strong>- Given by WordPress, when we create a series post.</li>
<li><strong>Name </strong>- Title, saved as common WordPress&#8217; post title.</li>
<li><strong>Description </strong>- Little text about series. We will user WordPress&#8217; description for this.</li>
<li><strong>Open? </strong>- It is useful to know if a series is still open, so is much easier to assign a post to series when you have 1.000 series but just 3 open (you have posts to write for it in future).</li>
<li><strong>Posts[], PostsScreenName[], SeriesSize</strong> &#8211; As we will use custom fields, I think the better way to store posts is create &#8220;fake arrays&#8221;. Let&#8217;s say we have one series with 3 posts, so we will have Post_1 = 10, Post_2 = 15, Post_3 = 32 and PostScreenName_1 = &#8220;Hello World&#8221;, PostScreenName_2 = &#8220;Hello World &#8211; Again&#8221;, PostScreenName_3 = &#8220;Hello, Hello World&#8221;. As we have 3 posts, our SeriesSize must to be 3.</li>
</ul>
<p>Now, we can get started on coding.</p>
<h2>Step 2 &#8211; Create our plugin and custom post type</h2>
<p>Let&#8217;s create a folder inside our WordPress install (I recommend you do a blank 3.1.2 install, this is the version that I&#8217;m working with). Our folder name will be 1WDSeries and our plugin file will be 1WDSeries.php.</p>
<h3>Plugin Basic Structure</h3>
<p>Just open this blank file and write something like this:</p>
<pre>
&lt;pre&gt;&lt;!--?&lt;span class=&quot;hiddenSpellError&quot; pre=&quot;&quot;--&gt;php&lt;/pre&gt;
/*
Plugin Name: 1WD Series
Plugin URI: http://www.1stwebdesigner.com/
Description: Creates &quot;Series&quot; custom post type, and makes possible relate normal posts inside one series
Author: Rochester Oliveira
Version: 1.0
Author URI: http://www.1stwebdesigner.com/author/rochester/
*/
?&gt;
</pre>
<p>Those lines are required WordPress data for plugins. Just put a name, URI, Description and it will de shown in wp-admin, when users manage plugins.</p>
<h3>Create post type</h3>
<p>Before we start creating anything you must have in mind that any function we create here can be called in WordPress after (if this plugin is activated, for sure) AND any WordPress function can be called from this plugin. So we have to put a prefix in all our functions, to ensure that we will not have any conflict with other plugins or WordPress functions.</p>
<p>Our magic function to create custom post types is register_post_type($name,$args). Let&#8217;s see how it works:</p>
<pre>
&lt;pre&gt;&lt;!--?&lt;span class=&quot;hiddenSpellError&quot; pre=&quot;&quot;--&gt;php&lt;/pre&gt;
 function wd_registerPostType() {
 //for better understanding when create / edit series we change some default labels
 $labels = array(

?&gt;
&lt;pre&gt;</pre>
<p>The first block set&#8217;s up our labels, for different cases for this plugin. That $args part is pretty important because it defines how this custom post type will behave. Important things:</p>
<ul>
<li>public &#8211; whether display or not this post in front-end, admin menu</li>
<li>rewrite &#8211; overwrite permalinks structure for this post</li>
<li>capability_type -If it is more like a post (hierarchical and &#8220;fixed&#8221;), or more like a page (categorized and time-oriented)</li>
<li>menu_position &#8211; Set its order in admin menu.</li>
<li>supports &#8211; Which common fields this post will have</li>
</ul>
<p>That last line is what calls the function, every time we call WordPress.</p>
<h2>Step 3 &#8211; Post functionality</h2>
<h3>Creating our metabox</h3>
<p>Now we need to add a metabox in the post edit screen. A metabox is a panel in our edit mode, in this case with fixed custom inputs. Thus the user doesn&#8217;t need to know the field name to add it (via default custom fields insert), moreover we can do some custom actions with this data (create a post series when we have a field &#8220;new series&#8221;, for example).</p>
<p>The function we need to call is add_meta_box, and it has some simple parameters. We will call it inside a function, so when we create our series metabox (surely it will need one too) we put it all together.</p>
<pre>
&lt;pre&gt;&lt;!--?&lt;span class=&quot;hiddenSpellError&quot; pre=&quot;&quot;--&gt;php&lt;/pre&gt;
 function wd_call_meta() {
 add_meta_box(
 'series-data', // id of the metabox
 'Series setting', // Title
 'wd_post_options', //callback function that will &quot;echo&quot; the contents
 'post', // which post types will have it (page, post, link, wd_series)
 'side', //positioning: side, advanced
 'low' // positioning: low, high
 );
 }

 if (is_admin()) {
 //register metaboxes
 add_action('admin_menu', 'wd_call_meta');
 }
?&gt;
</pre>
<p>The first block is our magic function, that says to WordPress &#8220;hey, when you edit a post, add this box, with these parameters!&#8221; The second function, says &#8220;hey, when you are in wp-admin don&#8217;t forget to call this function&#8221;.</p>
<p>We will now create our wd_post_options function, that defines what we have in our metabox. It is a simple HTML,  that we will just add some CSS to make it prettier. But we have to pay attention to get default values so if we are editing a post (not creating) we show the correct current data to the user (if our post is part of series_id 11, for example, we have to show this to the user).</p>
<pre>
&lt;pre&gt;&lt;!--?&lt;span class=&quot;hiddenSpellError&quot; pre=&quot;&quot;--&gt;php&lt;/pre&gt;
 //posts meta
 function wd_post_options() {

 global $post;
 $custom = get_post_custom($post-&gt;ID);
 $exist_series = $custom[&quot;series_id&quot;][0]; //it comes as array, we have to get the index 0 value
 $order_series = $custom[&quot;series_order&quot;][0];
 $closing = $name = &quot;&quot;;
 if(!empty($exist_series)) {
 $open = get_post_meta($exist_series, &quot;open&quot;, true);
 if ($open == &quot;no&quot;) {
 $size = get_post_meta($exist_series, &quot;size&quot;, true);
 if ($size == $order_series) { //so, we have the last post in a closed series, this post is the &quot;closing&quot; series post

 }
 $key = &quot;name_&quot;.$order_series;
 $name = get_post_meta($exist_series, $key, true);
 }

</pre>
<p>Creating the inputs itself, doesn&#8217;t save any data. It is just an input that WordPress ignores when saving default post data, so we need to change it. This is a job for our fantastic add_action function.</p>
<h3>Save all this data with custom function</h3>
<p>We need to run a function every time we have a post saved or edited. At this point, we have just $_POST data so we need to add our custom fields, and create our custom post type when this post is the first of its series. At this point we will deal with some series custom fields (because it stores almost all data), so it may seem quite strange now, but in the end it&#8217;s gonna be all right  <img src='http://www.neurosoftware.ro/programming-blog/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif' alt=':D' class='wp-smiley' /> </p>

<h2>Are you hungry yet?</h2>
<p>I think we&#8217;ve had enough fun for today. In our next post, we add our series meta box, deal with its data and show all this stuff in our theme (via functions and shortcodes). It will be amazing <img src='http://www.neurosoftware.ro/programming-blog/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif' alt=':D' class='wp-smiley' /> </p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Nick La has written a detail tutorial on how to create an <a title="Animated Scroll to Top" href="http://webdesignerwall.com/tutorials/animated-scroll-to-top" target="_blank">Animated Scroll to Top</a> as seen on Web Designer Wall. It is very simple to do with jQuery (just a few lines of code). It checks if the scrollbar top position is greater than certain value, then fade in the scroll to top button. Upon the link is clicked, it scrolls the page to the top.</p>
<p>Note the back to top button is linking to anchor #top which is the ID of the &lt;body&gt; tag. Technically speaking you don&#8217;t need to assign any anchor link because jQuery can scroll the page to any position. However, it is nice to include it because it provides a fallback if Javascript is not supported.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Creating custom functions with jQuery based on the scroll position of the page just got a whole lot easier. Today i stumbled through an interesting jQuery plugin that i am sure many of you guys will find useful. <a href="http://imakewebthings.github.com/jquery-waypoints/">Waypoints</a> is a small jQuery plugin that makes it easy to execute a function whenever you scroll to an element.<br />
<img src="http://www.neurosoftware.ro/programming-blog/wp-content/plugins/wp-o-matic/cache/dc871_jquery-Waypoints.png" alt="jQuery Waypoint" /></p>
<pre>
     $(&#039;.entry&#039;).waypoint(function() {
          alert(&#039;You have scrolled to an entry.&#039;);
     });
</pre>
<p>Waypoints makes a solid base for modern UI patterns that depend on a user’s scroll position on the page.</p>
<p>Waypoints is dual licensed under the <a href="https://github.com/imakewebthings/jquery-waypoints/blob/master/MIT-license.txt">MIT</a> and <a href="https://github.com/imakewebthings/jquery-waypoints/blob/master/GPL-license.txt">GPL</a> licenses. You can fork the project or report any issues in the <a href="https://github.com/imakewebthings/jquery-waypoints">GitHub repository</a>.</p>

<p>And, like any other language, <strong>some common mistakes and bad practices -which can be avoided easily- exist.</strong></p>
<p><a href="http://bonsaiden.github.com/JavaScript-Garden/" target="_blank"><img alt="JavaScript Garden" height="288" src="http://www.neurosoftware.ro/programming-blog/wp-content/plugins/wp-o-matic/cache/dd656_javascript-garden.gif" width="480" /></a></p>
<p><a href="http://bonsaiden.github.com/JavaScript-Garden/" target="_blank"><strong>JavaScript Garden</strong></a> is a website (it is open source) which documents these details to help non-expert JavaScript programmers.</p>
<p>The project is also handy as it is sometimes hard to debug JavaScript code (specially for beginners) because of unfriendly errors in some situations.</p>
<p>To sum up, bookmarking the project and <strong>referring to its related category in case of a hard-to-fix error</strong> would be good idea.</p>

<p>It is built using the popular <a href="http://http//code.google.com/p/zeroclipboard/" target="_blank">Zero Clipboard</a> library + totally compatible with Flash 10 and below.</p>

<p>The library is <strong>lightweight (~7kb)</strong> and has support for CSS &quot;:hover&quot; + &quot;:active&quot; states.</p>
<p><strong>zClip</strong> works by transparently overlaying the Flash movie over an element yet it keeps this targeted element&#039;s &quot;click&quot; &quot;mouseenter&quot; and &quot;mouseleave&quot; events.</p>
<p>Also, <strong>2 callback functions</strong>: &quot;before copy&quot; and &quot;after copy&quot; allow you handle the requests better.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>When it comes to efficiently organizing jQuery code, one of the best options is turning certain parts of it into a plugin. There are many benefits to this &#8211; your code becomes easier to modify and follow, and repetitive tasks are handled naturally. This also improves the speed with which you develop, as plugin organization promotes code reuse.</p>
<p>This is why today we are going to demonstrate the process of converting code to a plugin. We are going to take the code from our <a href="http://tutorialzine.com/2010/11/better-select-jquery-css3/">jQuery &amp; CSS3 Select Replacement tutorial</a>, and turn it into a ready for use jQuery plugin.</p>
<h3>The Idea</h3>
<p>Writing a jQuery plugin is not at all difficult. You need to extend the <strong>$.fn</strong> object with your own function. What is more difficult, however, is finding a way to properly structure your code so that your plugin is easy to embed and use, without dependencies.</p>
<p>Here are several problems that we need to solve when converting the tutorial code into a jQuery plugin:</p>
<ol>
<li>We need to give users the ability to control what markup is generated for the dropdown. For example the tutorial code relies heavily on the presence of <strong>data-</strong> attributes, which contain HTML markup. This is too specific to be included into a plugin, so we need to leave it out of the implementation;</li>
<li>Because of the way plugins are called, we need to rewrite the code so it uses the &#8220;this&#8221; object that is passed to the plugin, instead of hard-coding a selector. This will also make it possible to convert more than one select element at once;</li>
<li>We need to extract the JavaScript and CSS code of the plugin into separate files, so it is easy to embed and redistribute.</li>
</ol>
<h3>The Code</h3>
<p>As you remember from the tutorial, our jQuery code scans the select&#8217;s option elements and builds an unordered list. In the process it also looks for a number of data- attributes in the options that contain an image URL and a description to use in the list.</p>
<p>This is, however, too specific for a plugin. We need to give users the ability to override this functionality. To solve the problem, we can allow users to pass a function as a parameter to the plugin, which will generate the markup instead. If such a parameter is not passed, we will use fall back to a default one, which basically takes the text of the option element and turn it directly into a list item.</p>
<p>Lets put this into code:</p>
<pre>(function($){

	$.fn.tzSelect = function(options){
		options = $.extend({
			render : function(option){
				return $('&lt;li&gt;',{
					html : option.text()
				});
			},
			className : ''
		},options);

	// More code will be added here.

	}
})(jQuery);
</pre>
<p>The render function takes an <em>option element</em> (the kind that is contained in a <em>select</em>), and returns a li element, which is directly included in the drop down list by the plugin. This solves problem #1 outlined above.</p>
<div><a href="http://demo.tutorialzine.com/2011/02/converting-jquery-code-plugin/"><img class="size-full wp-image-1357" src="http://www.neurosoftware.ro/programming-blog/wp-content/plugins/wp-o-matic/cache/4e9a1_jquery-css3-select-replacement-plugin.jpg" alt="jQuery &amp; CSS3 Select Replacement Plugin" width="620" height="460" /></a>
<p>jQuery &amp; CSS3 Select Replacement Plugin</p>
</div>
<p>Before we move on with solving problem <strong>#2</strong>, lets see how our plugin is going to be called:</p>
<pre>$(document).ready(function(){
	$('select').tzSelect();
});
</pre>
<p>In the example code above, you can see that we are applying the plugin to every <em>select</em> element on the page. We can access these elements by traversing the &#8220;<strong>this</strong>&#8221; object that is passed to the plugin:</p>
<pre>return this.each(function(){

			// The "this" points to the current select element:

			var select = $(this);

			var selectBoxContainer = $('&lt;div&gt;',{
				width		: select.outerWidth(),
				className	: 'tzSelect',
				html		: '&lt;div class="selectBox"&gt;&lt;/div&gt;'
			});

			var dropDown = $('&lt;ul&gt;',{className:'dropDown'});
			var selectBox = selectBoxContainer.find('.selectBox');

			// Looping though the options of the original select element

			if(options.className){
				dropDown.addClass(options.className);
			}

			select.find('option').each(function(i){
				var option = $(this);

				if(i==select.attr('selectedIndex')){
					selectBox.html(option.text());
				}

				// As of jQuery 1.4.3 we can access HTML5
				// data attributes with the data() method.

				if(option.data('skip')){
					return true;
				}

				// Creating a dropdown item according to the
				// data-icon and data-html-text HTML5 attributes:

				var li = options.render(option);

				li.click(function(){

					selectBox.html(option.text());
					dropDown.trigger('hide');

					// When a click occurs, we are also reflecting
					// the change on the original select element:
					select.val(option.val());

					return false;
				});

				dropDown.append(li);
			});

			selectBoxContainer.append(dropDown.hide());
			select.hide().after(selectBoxContainer);

			// Binding custom show and hide events on the dropDown:

			dropDown.bind('show',function(){

				if(dropDown.is(':animated')){
					return false;
				}

				selectBox.addClass('expanded');
				dropDown.slideDown();

			}).bind('hide',function(){

				if(dropDown.is(':animated')){
					return false;
				}

				selectBox.removeClass('expanded');
				dropDown.slideUp();

			}).bind('toggle',function(){
				if(selectBox.hasClass('expanded')){
					dropDown.trigger('hide');
				}
				else dropDown.trigger('show');
			});

			selectBox.click(function(){
				dropDown.trigger('toggle');
				return false;
			});

			// If we click anywhere on the page, while the
			// dropdown is shown, it is going to be hidden:

			$(document).click(function(){
				dropDown.trigger('hide');
			});

		});
</pre>
<p>The fragment above almost identical with the tutorial code we are converting today. One notable change is that we assign <strong>$(this)</strong> to the select variable (line 5), which used to be <code>$('select.makeMeFancy')</code> (a hardcoded selector), which significantly limited the scope of the code.</p>
<p>The other change is that instead of directly generating the drop down list, we are calling the render function that was passed as a parameter (line 51).</p>
<p>When we combine the above, we get the complete source code of the plugin:</p>
<h4>tzSelect/jquery.tzSelect.js</h4>
<pre>(function($){

	$.fn.tzSelect = function(options){
		options = $.extend({
			render : function(option){
				return $('&lt;li&gt;',{
					html : option.text()
				});
			},
			className : ''
		},options);

		return this.each(function(){

			// The "this" points to the current select element:

			var select = $(this);

			var selectBoxContainer = $('&lt;div&gt;',{
				width		: select.outerWidth(),
				className	: 'tzSelect',
				html		: '&lt;div class="selectBox"&gt;&lt;/div&gt;'
			});

			var dropDown = $('&lt;ul&gt;',{className:'dropDown'});
			var selectBox = selectBoxContainer.find('.selectBox');

			// Looping though the options of the original select element

			if(options.className){
				dropDown.addClass(options.className);
			}

			select.find('option').each(function(i){
				var option = $(this);

				if(i==select.attr('selectedIndex')){
					selectBox.html(option.text());
				}

				// As of jQuery 1.4.3 we can access HTML5
				// data attributes with the data() method.

				if(option.data('skip')){
					return true;
				}

				// Creating a dropdown item according to the
				// data-icon and data-html-text HTML5 attributes:

				var li = options.render(option);

				li.click(function(){

					selectBox.html(option.text());
					dropDown.trigger('hide');

					// When a click occurs, we are also reflecting
					// the change on the original select element:
					select.val(option.val());

					return false;
				});

				dropDown.append(li);
			});

			selectBoxContainer.append(dropDown.hide());
			select.hide().after(selectBoxContainer);

			// Binding custom show and hide events on the dropDown:

			dropDown.bind('show',function(){

				if(dropDown.is(':animated')){
					return false;
				}

				selectBox.addClass('expanded');
				dropDown.slideDown();

			}).bind('hide',function(){

				if(dropDown.is(':animated')){
					return false;
				}

				selectBox.removeClass('expanded');
				dropDown.slideUp();

			}).bind('toggle',function(){
				if(selectBox.hasClass('expanded')){
					dropDown.trigger('hide');
				}
				else dropDown.trigger('show');
			});

			selectBox.click(function(){
				dropDown.trigger('toggle');
				return false;
			});

			// If we click anywhere on the page, while the
			// dropdown is shown, it is going to be hidden:

			$(document).click(function(){
				dropDown.trigger('hide');
			});

		});
	}

})(jQuery);
</pre>
<p>Placing this plugin in a separate file solves problem <strong>#3</strong>. However, as I mentioned previously, we intentionally left out the code that uses the <strong>data-</strong> attributes in order to make the plugin more portable. To compensate, we need to pass a custom render function when calling the plugin, as you can see below (this is also the code that is used in the demo).</p>
<h4>script.js</h4>
<pre>$(document).ready(function(){

	$('select.makeMeFancy').tzSelect({
		render : function(option){
			return $('&lt;li&gt;',{
				html:	'&lt;img src="'+option.data('icon')+'" /&gt;&lt;span&gt;'+
						option.data('html-text')+'&lt;/span&gt;'
			});
		},
		className : 'hasDetails'
	});

	// Calling the default version of the dropdown
	$('select.regularSelect').tzSelect();

});
</pre>
<p><strong>With this our jQuery plugin is complete!</strong></p>
<blockquote><p>You can use this plugin by simply dropping the tzSelect folder (available from the download button above) into your project root, and including <strong>jquery.tzSelect.css</strong> and <strong>jquery.tzSelect.js</strong> in your HTML documents.</p>
</blockquote>
<h3>Wrapping Up</h3>
<p>Following these simple steps, you can easily turn a mess of jQuery code into a structured and ready for reuse plugin. Sure, it does take a bit of work, but the effort would pay out many times in the long run.</p>

<p>
In this video quick tip, I&#8217;ll teach you how to add a bit of flair to your page, by displaying a set of elements sequentially. While there are numerous ways to accomplish this task, today, we&#8217;ll review one technique that uses recursive functions.
</p>
<p><span></span></p>
<div>
<span><a href="http://www.youtube.com/user/nettutsplus">Subscribe to our YouTube page to watch all of the video tutorials!</a></span>
</div>
<pre>
// Wrapping, self invoking function prevents globals
(function() {
   // Hide the elements initially
   var lis = $('li').hide();

   // When some anchor tag is clicked. (Being super generic here)
   $('a').click(function() {
      var i = 0;

      // FadeIn each list item over 200 ms, and,
      // when finished, recursively call displayImages.
      // When eq(i) refers to an element that does not exist,
      // jQuery will return an empty object, and not continue
      // to fadeIn.
      (function displayImages() {
         lis.eq(i++).fadeIn(200, displayImages);
      })();
   });
})();
</pre>
<hr />
<h2> Conclusion </h2>
<p>What makes this usage effective is the fact that, when <code>lis.eq(i)</code> refers to an element that doesn&#8217;t exist in the wrapped set, an empty jQuery object will be returned. When this happens, the subsequent methods in the chain (<code>fadeIn</code>) will never be called. </p>
