This Christmas we’re hosting a large family gathering at our house. The conservatory is being converted into a dining room with a 3 metre long table, nicely decorated with all kinds of Christmassy objects and pretty fairy lights surrounding the room. We have 11 people coming over including Laura’s parents, my parents, Laura’s brother, my two sisters and both our Grandparents. Following this is an evening of games for the youngsters and falling to sleep on the sofa for the oldies.

New Year wise, we don’t have any plans as yet. It’s tradition for my Auntie to have a gathering, so if things are going ahead this year, that’s likely to be our destination for New Year partying!

1. CSS3, HTML5 and Fonts as a Service

CSS3, HTML5, and Fonts as a Service such as Typekit that cater to web browsers that already support the @font-face rule, are giving web designers the creative freedom that they have been coveting for a long time.

CSS3 is opening up various new options for styling content on the web, from multiple backgrounds on page elements, better ability to select and style elements with greater specificity, and color gradients without reliance on static graphics, to simpler aesthetical improvements such as support for rounded corners without the need for complicated sliding doors techniques or JavaScript.

HTML5 is slowly but surely changing the way we mark up our pages, bringing us closer to the holy grail of the semantic web, opening up native support for open format multimedia such as video and audio, and bringing us better ways to interoperate with the content of a website.

Another change that web designers have been wishing for is being able to use any font on a web page, without using static CSS background image replacement or relying on JavaScript and Flash. The development of tools like Typekit and greater support for the @font-face rule are enabling site builders to use a much wider range of fonts in their design.

So what will change?

These are all web technologies that are guaranteed to make the web a more aesthetically pleasing place. Of course, expect these new things to be misused by Sunday driver designers; there will be some horrible font choices and misemployed color gradients that will produce unreadable and tacky page designs, but it’s the opportunities that they open up for capable and creative designers that will be most interesting.

2. Ways we browse the web

The browser landscape is alive and well, with better and faster web browsers such as Google Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Opera. Web users today are provided with many choices that will surely drive competition and one-upping from these companies – stressful for their developers, but great for consumers.

The browser wars is in full force, and unlike the preceding browser wars where Internet Explorer dethroned other browsers to take hold of a majority browser share, IE is shaping up to being the "dethronee" this time around.

And changes in browsing the web aren’t just limited to the web browser competition, the way we digest content from the web is increasingly becoming removed from the traditional "sit in front of your desktop" way. Smart phones are becoming more common, TV’s are becoming web-enabled–and as are gaming consoles such as the PS3 and Netbooks and mobile devices such as the iPhone and the Droid are giving users an experience on a smaller screen than a traditional laptop.

Moreover, browsers themselves are changing. The launch of Google Chrome brought the WebKit engine, a layout engine that has a big portion of CSS3 and HTML5 specifications already implemented, to Windows-based computers better than Apple’s Safari port to Windows, and it may yet be a bigger milestone than many first thought. With Google aiming for a 10% share of the market over the next couple of years, a big push for users may well be coming. A large shift from the dominant web browser, Internet Explorer, is underway and may be successful next year. In Germany, Mozilla Firefox is close to overtaking IE’s market share as we speak.

These factors are revising the way we think about web design and accessibility. Do you have a mobile version of your site? What does it look like on a small screen? What does it look like on a large screen? What does it look like in a WebKit versus Gecko versus Trident browser layout rendering engine?

Attitudes towards viewing of websites across different media is changing as well, designers are increasingly becoming of the opinion that designs do not need to render the same everywhere, nor do they need to give the same user experience across all web browsers.

So what will it change?

There’s a good chance that you’ll start to see websites that don’t look the same in every browser. Techniques for progressive enhancement are more commonplace than before, giving users of modern web browsers a better web experience than those who will not or cannot use them. Furthermore, there’s already widespread acceptance towards foregoing support for antiquated browsers, putting the burden of getting users upgraded on the browser makers, and not the designers. This type of forward thinking will only grow in the upcoming year. What’s more, the changes in the way we view the web will shift focus to content, functionality and accessibility, but by no means at the expense of good, interesting and inspiring design.

3. Social media

No one can deny that 2009 has been a big year for social media: Twitter, for example, has become the buzzword in many a boardroom and office. It’s obvious that it will continue to a big part of the web in the future.

In many ways, the growth of platforms such as Twitter and Facebook has led the web to be much more community-oriented. Big changes could happen within social media and, no doubt, will be led by monetization of the media.

One of the big questions revolves around how you measure the impact and value of social media and how to get that value back. How valuable are 1,000 twitter followers? Do you start charging for the service? Answering all these questions will lead to significant changes over the next year in the social media arena.

Along with these changes will come increased focus in getting information in real-time. Google is already discussing real-time search to leverage the immediate and breaking information that can be found on sites like Twitter. How these changes are integrated into the current web system, especially in terms of search engine technology, could precipitate into some interesting developments and innovation in the way we seek information online.

So what will it change?

With more people participating in the creation of information on the web, the way in which we obtain information will shift from being from a singular source, into a more community-created source. Looking for information about, say, a car repair shop will show you recent tweets and Facebook updates about that company instead of outdated and static information.

4. JavaScript

Whilst CSS3/HTML5 has started to step on the toes of JavaScript, JavaScript itself has started to inch into the territory of Flash. The growth of frameworks such as jQuery and has made rich client-side interaction and asynchronous/seamless user experiences a reality. This leads to easier deployments of web applications, which in turn, increases competition, which in turn, leads to innovation.

JavaScript is already stepping into what, in the past, we would associate as being Flash’s territory, such as interactive games (which can be used for training and distance-learning applications) and complex and interactive data visualization. It should also enable us to replicate rich interfaces and flash type experiences in a much more accessible way.

And very recently, 10 years after the last major revision, JavaScript (known as ECMAscript in web standards organizations) has just finished a major revision of its specifications for the language. Once browser companies adopt these standards, web developers will be provided with more tools to improve their capabilities in creating web applications.

So what will it change?

Because CSS3 and HTML5 will replace a lot of what JavaScript is doing now (i.e. complex element selections, dynamic rounded corners, handling real-time editable web pages), we will see a surge in JavaScript developing into being focused solely on handling programming logic of webapps on the client-side. With the news of the major revision on JS specifications, we will see a progression towards better web applications that can interoperate much better with other web apps (for example, a major goal for the new set of specs is the security of JSON objects).

For a database administrator, DBM (database management) tools make tasks related to maintaining relational databases efficient and fast. Prior to the popularity of these tools, most DBA’s had to use the command line to create, edit, and delete databases. In this article, we present to you the top five most popular/most voted for database management tools.

Late last month, we asked what your favorite database management tool was, and now, here are the top five most-voted-for tools.

5. Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio

For Microsoft SQL Server database admins, there probably isn’t a better tool out there than Miscosoft’s freeware app (downloadable at $0 dollars on the Microsoft site), SQL Server Management Studio. SQL Server Management Studio has a GUI that Windows OS users will find straightforward, and it has an innovative feature called Object Explorer that lets you browse, select, and perform tasks on database objects. It’s the only tool you need for creating and administering Microsoft SQL Server databases.

4. Sequel Pro

For Mac OS users, Sequel Pro–an open source MySQL database management front-end tool–is a top pick. It has a slick and intuitive GUI that keeps it barebones so that you can easily navigate the app. To get started with Sequel Pro, make sure to check out their docs page (but a word of caution, the docs is still under development at this time).

3. SQLyog

SQLyog is a GUI administration tool for MySQL developed by Indian-based software company, Webyog. It comes in two flavors: Enterprise (with the price ranging from $99 to $999) and the pared down Free Community version; to see the differences, check out the feature comparison table. SQLyog’s list of features is outstanding and unfathomable – a top-notch tool for professional database admins.

2. Navicat for MySQL

Navicat for MySQL is part of the family of cross-platform (Windows/Mac/Linux) relational database management tools created by PremiumSoft. It has a visual query builder for creating complex database queries in a snap, import/export/backup tools for your databases, a report builder for printing out db queries that the boss can understand, a task scheduling assistant for scheduled execution of jobs, and much more.

Navicat also produces front-ends for Oracle and PostgreSQL. Navicat products have a Lite version (non-commercial) and a Premium version; check out the feature matrix to see the difference in features of both versions.

1. phpMyAdmin

phpMyAdmin, the most popularly voted database management tool by you (and where my vote would have gone), is an open source web-based MySQL manager. Don’t let it’s simple and aesthetically-challenged GUI fool you, phpMyAdmin packs a punch: you can create/manage databases, tables, db users, optimize and check for errors in your db tables, run queries, export/import data in plenty of file formats, and much more; couple all of that with ease of installation and you’ve got yourself a true winner.

To learn more about phpMyAdmin, you should consider getting the Mastering phpMyAdmin 3.1 for Effective MySQL Managementbook by Packt Publishing (a book that I highly recommend).

jQuery can pretty much do anything you can think of. All you need is a creative imagination and some time to learn the simple and intuitive API.

In this article, we share with you some innovative uses of jQuery in animating web design elements. You’ll read about some interesting techniques, tutorials, and examples that will show you how to create similar effects on your own websites and web apps.

1. Puffing Smoke Effect in jQuery

This example by Dutch web developer Gaya Kessler features an impressive animation effect of cartoonish smoke emanating from factory smoke stacks. Kessler thoughtfully supplies a configurable jQuery plugin with instructions based on his site’s header, so that you may create a similar animation effect for your website.

2. Crafting an Animated Postcard

Sam Dunn of the web development duo, Build Internet, wrote a tutorial on how to create an animated landscape using transparent PNG images. The tutorial takes advantage of the popular jQuery Easing plugin to help with the animation and the setTimeout() JavaScript function to time the events accordingly.

3. Create a Realistic Hover Effect

In this tutorial, you will learn how to animate image elements in a smooth and fluid manner. The tutorial features objects that, when hovered on, rises upwards. In the live demo of the effect, notice how the reflections and shadows at the bottom also changes when the object lifts up; hence "realistic" in the name of the technique.

4. Scrolling Background Effect

The creators of the site youlove.us shares their code (and explanation) for making a seamless vertical scrolling CSS background; featured on the site’s header. The script is also dependent on the user’s system time; the animation starts at a different position depending on whether you visit the site at night or in the morning, a nice touch.

5. Multiple Animations with Glimmer

Glimmer, a JavaScript animation creation tool that leverages the jQuery library, has several live demonstrations for some of the things you can do with the app. For instance, with Glimmer, you can create cool animation sequences or make a spiffy and impressive rotating banner for your website.

6. jQuery Blend

jQuery Blend is a plugin for animating CSS background images. The project emphasizes on web development best practices such as progressive enhancement  so that users with JavaScript disabled are still able to interact with your interface, albeit without the animation effects, making for a truly universal design.

7. Parallax Scrolling Background

In this jQuery tutorial, you will learn how to construct a Parallax Scrolling background – first popularized in web interfaces with the use of Flash. The technique involves div elements with CSS background images. The Parallax Scrolling technique requires the scrollTo plugin by Argentinean Web Developer and Game Programmer, Ariel Flesler.

8. Stunning Sliding Door Effect

Designer and Developer Kevin Liew shows other website builders how to create a striking animation effect where a top image splits up into four pieces, moving smoothly to the corners, and revealing another image beneath it. It’s an animation effect suited for interactive thumbnails of images.

9. Make Your Header Responses to Mouse Movements

In this jQuery animation technique, you will learn how to animate a set of images that reacts to the user’s mouse movements. When the user hovers over a set of images, the set begins to follow the mouse cursor. This technique can be adapted to many user interface related functions, or you can just use it to impart a memorable experience to your users.

10. Animated Header Using jQuery

This animated tutorial goes over a similar concept to the youlove.us example of vertically moving a large CSS background image. Illustrations on how the technique works will help readers grok the concept more fully. Devirtuoso, the author of the tutorial, goes through due diligence by offering an IE6 hack for backwards compatibility.

Last week, we asked readers what they thought the best web application for designers is, and here we share the top five favorites that gained the most votes. The web applications you’ll see here aren’t all specifically for designers but, as you’ll soon see, it’s not surprising why designers love them.

5. FreshBooks

FreshBooks (coincidentally Six Revisions’ longest standing site sponsor) is a time-tracking and invoicing tool targeted towards freelancers. It’s perfect for project-based work, with the ability to keep your time logs, keep track of your expenses, create repeating invoices, and much, much more. FreshBooks comes in many flavors, and for those wanting to try before buying, the free version gives you all the features of the webapp (but is limited to only three clients). As a FreshBooker myself, I can’t say enough good things about this web application, only that it’s crucial for people who work on contractual jobs.

4. Google Analytics

Google Analytics is a free web application that tracks site statistics. This is a favorite tool amongst web designers for seeing how effective their web user interface designs are. It lets you create custom reports that you can PDF and ship off to your clients (you can use it to show the effectiveness of that recent redesign you did for them). I use Google Analytics on Six Revisions for traffic reporting, and it’s, without a doubt, the best web analytics out there – free or otherwise.

3. Basecamp

Basecamp is a project collaboration tool aimed mainly towards small-to-medium sized organizations. You can share and upload project files, create to-do lists, set milestones, participate in real-time collaboration (with Writeboard), and a lot more. I’ve been using Basecamp for roughly six months, and it’s made teamwork with co-workers and communication with clients a breeze.

2. DropBox

DropBox is a file syncing tool that’s fast, reliable, and very easy to set up. DropBox also has a web interface that allows you to manage, upload, delete, and organize your synced files. DropBox is free, allowing you to store 2GB of files (and you can get up to 5GB for referring people to join) – if you need more storage space, the $100/year is more than worth it, especially if you’re using it for work. DropBox is my personal favorite: it’s become an essential component to my work.

1. Kuler

Coming in at numero uno: Kuler, managing to garner nearly a third of the total votes, is a web application that lets you make, store, and share color schemes. It’s wonderful for remembering your favorite color combinations and getting color scheme inspiration for your design projects.

SpeckyBoy Design Mag

Speckyboy Design Magazine launched in October 2007, as my personal web design homepage. I was just taking (what felt like) a giant leap into freelance design and consultancy, and needed a home base for my potential clients to get in touch with me… Somewhere over the following months this site changed direction, when I realized I was getting more and more visitors.
It started with an article called Top 25 Free Icon Resources for Web Designers, and it did very well on delicious, and the visitors increased. By then I had caught the blogging bug.

From that initial article I have tried to cover every aspect of web design and development offering FREE and HIGH QUALITY RESOURCES as well as attempting to inspire through our showcases. I am not a graphic designer (I still use Adobe Fireworks), but do love it and certainly appreciate it, the same goes for typography and photography.

Abduzeedo

This blog was created and developed by Fabio Sasso, a Brazilian designer living in Porto Alegre (south of Brazil).

My first contact with the Internet happened in 1995 and 1996 I started playing with it as a designer. I have a degree in graphic design and I’ve been working professionally since 1998, here in Brazil, at least in my town, I could say that it was the very beginning of the Internet.

The idea behind this blog is primarily to be a channel for me to write down some ideas, experiments, news, and a lot of thing that I see online and probably will forget in a couple of months. Basically it is an archive of my adventures online as a designer on the daily basis. Another thing that I want to do with this blog is to improve my English skills, as a Brazilian and non-native speaker of English, it’s a good way to practice it.
