The main news this month is that Android finally passes Nokia and becomes the third-largest mobile browser. It has taken its time; I’ve been expecting this ever since April or so.

Other than that not much happens. NetFront wins a point after recovering from a StatCounter bug and is back to its customary 4%; Opera loses a point but is still clearly ahead of Safari for the second month in a row, and there are some minor changes at the bottom of the market.

All in all yet another boring month.

Year-over-year

Let’s spice things up by doing a year-over-year comparison for July. The main conclusion must be that Android won an immense amount of market share, and that most of it comes form Opera and Safari. Surprising.

More interesting is the long tail. Four browsers that still marginally made the threshold a year ago have now all but disappeared globally: Sony PlayStation, Openwave, Bolt, and Palm. Instead, the Samsung browsers, Obigo and UC now rule the long-tail roost.

Also interesting is that in one year the Big Five have retained exactly 89% of the market. The story of the past twelve months is one of the shifts within the Big Five. The other browsers don’t matter all that much — yet.

Finally, take a look at the last row. Mobile browsing has more than doubled in importance in a year: from 3% of all browsing to 7%. That’s growth.

Browsers by OS

Let’s spice up things even more and assign specific browser percentages to specific OSs. Which browser, exactly, do the Symbian users use?

This is necessarily a rough estimate; I don’t want to use fractions, and I’m not totally certain of the exact spread of Opera and NetFront among the various OSs. So what follows is only an indication.

iOS and BlackBerry are easy: there is so little mismatch between OS and browser figures that other browsers (mainly Opera) don’t even make it to 1%.

Symbian and Android are also easy. There is a mismatch between OS and browser figures (in the case of Symbian a significant mismatch), but the only browser that can possibly fill it up is Opera. That accounts for 16 of Opera’s 22%; and also for Nokia’s dislike of Opera.

From here on things get more sketchy. I give the larger part of the Unknown OS to Opera, because Opera Mini does not always give platform information, which forces StatCounter to count it as Unknown. Still, I give the Other browsers a little bit, too.

As to Samsung and the other OSs, this is more guesswork than anything else. I give Opera a little share here, but the main share goes to the other browsers, especially NetFront.

I’m working with various browser vendors to get a better idea of what’s going on in the long tail of the market. I hope to be able to make better guesses next month.

You may recall that back in April, Postagram launched as a way to transform your Instagrams into physical picture postcards and deliver them for $0.99. A few month later, PopBooth launched as a way to use your iPhone/iPad as a photo booth complete with the picture print outs. These apps, while great themselves, were tests for Sincerely’s platform. A platform which today they’re opening to all iOS developers.

The Sincerely Ship Library is built from the tools the company was using internally to build apps like Postagram and PopBooth. Once developers sign up, they can add print and ship capabilities to their photo apps in under an hour, Sincerely notes. Those developers will be able to utilize Sincerely’s printing network as well as user network (for connections already established through Postagram and/or PopBooth). The result is 4×6 300 dpi color postcards from any iOS app that can be sent anywhere.

Okay, that’s nice, but why should developers sign up for this? Because it’s also a potential monetization platform. Sincerely asks that developers place a minimum $0.99 fee on the images. But for anything above $0.99, Sincerely pays 70 percent back to the app developer. Sincerely obviously keeps the other 30 percent — the same split Apple themselves do with developers.

So if a developer decides to charge $1.99 for their in-app photos, they would keep $0.70 of that (again, the developer keeps 70 percent after the initial $0.99 threshold).

For this fee, Sincerely handles all the billing and address collection as well as the actual logistics of printing and delivering the photos. They also handle the customer support surrounding the entire process. And the platform allows developers to have a branded space on the actual photo printouts.

Developers can sign up for the Sincerely Ship Library starting today, and the plan is for the platform to go fully live in September. The company is also sponsoring the Photo Hack Day in New York this weekend — the winner of which will get some nice iGear and a featured spot when the Ship Library launches.

Given the huge amount of photo apps flooding the market (with more to come), this seems like a smart idea. My only question is whether or not the payout to developers will be enough? Many will be hard-pressed to charge more then $1.99 for the functionality, and some will probably want to use the $0.99 price that Postagram itself uses — but then they’d make no money.

Even still, it’s not like it will cost developers anything to implement Sincerely’s solution. And they get to offer this functionality to users in a simple way.

Online travel website Kayak has just released a new Mac app that lets users plan their vacations, customized by destination and budget.

The app, Kayak Explore for Mac [Mac App Store link] is free and available in the Mac App Store. It’s an expanded version of the “Explore” feature on Kayak.com, but it adds a better user interface and options like sorting by type of trip. You can choose what time you want to travel or find optimum travel times for your intended destination.

Users are given an overview of various hotel and flight options for their trip, including access to reviews and photos. A flight or trip can then be booked on the web by clicking on the app.

We played with the app briefly and were impressed with its speed and ease of use. It certainly makes planning a trip or looking at vacation options more pleasant.

Lion users, get ready for a software update. Apple has just released out its first update for OS X Lion. The latest Mac OS, 10.7.1, is available as of Tuesday.

The update weighs in at a mere 17.4 MB, a nice departure from the hefty updates of old. It offers reprieve from a number of bugs and issues.

Foursquare has added photos inline with checkins in an update to its iPhone application Tuesday. The new version adds color to the activity stream and refreshes the look and feel of the app.

With the update, Foursquare for iPhone users will now see friends’ photos and checkins coupled together in the activity stream — just as they would on Foursquare.com.

Users can even select “here now” to view all the photos and shouts from friends at the same venue in a single stream. “Commenting on a friend’s night out? You’ll see all the other photos and comments as you’re composing your witty retort. Everything is in one place,” says Foursquare’s blog post.

The location-based social network — which added U.S. President Barack Obama as a celebrity user Monday — also retooled its iPhone application to make for a crisper and cleaner user experience. “There’s a new design scheme and a cleaned-up header, and, as has been frequently requested, bigger tap targets,” Foursquare says.

In early August, Foursquare gave its website a photo-facelift and started displaying images inline with checkins, foreshadowing Tuesday’s iPhone app release. Foursquare promises its Android and BlackBerry users that similar features are on the way for them as well.

In a move that shows the continuing evolution of its search product, Google on Tuesday introduced Google Related, a bottom-of-the-page bar for the Chrome and Internet Explorer browsers that suggests similar pages you might be interested in.

If you’re on a restaurant’s homepage, for example, Google Related might call up a map of the restaurant, reviews from Google Places and sites from other competing establishments. If you’re reading an op-ed, Google Related might offer an essay that takes the opposite opinion.

The suggestions are designed to be unobtrusive. Displayed on a thin bar at the bottom of your screen, they get magnified if you track your cursor over them. If you like something that’s suggested, you can give it a +1.

Naturally, Related would be prime real estate for advertisers. At the moment, however, it appears to offer only regular search results.

The launch is further evidence of the changing nature of search. Google has tinkered with its results of late by incorporating +1s from users as well as social search results from Twitter, Flickr and Quora. Musicians are not always the most articulate folks — often letting the sound and emotion of a jam outweigh vocal clarity — which can make singing along to your favorite tunes a bit of a chore. Enter musiXmatch, a new iOS app from the lyrics provider that makes uncovering the words to any jam a snap.

The app — which is available for Android, Symbian, Windows Mobile 7 and now for iPhone and iPod touch [iTunes links] — scans your music library, allowing you to listen to your music and tap to uncover lyrics while you jam. Right now, the app has around 5.5 million songs, so pickings are relatively robust.

Users can also share lyrics to their social networks, check out trending searches and search for specific songs.

Music recognition service Soundhound has a similar offering, allowing users to identify songs and pull up lyrics for “Now Playing” tracks on one’s iTunes. That service, however, only has access to 500,000 lyrics at present.

A little while back, YouTube launched an online town hall to get the public interested and voting on the issues that matter most, and now the video site has released an infographic showing some of the results.

Every week YouTube posts user-submitted questions and U.S. representatives respond with short videos. Users then watch two videos head-to-head and vote on their favorite. Party affiliation is hidden until after the vote to get the public listening to ideas rather than thinking along party lines.

In two months of existence, YouTube’s town hall received 50 videos from U.S. representatives viewed a cumulative 1.3 million times. The most viewed video is a response from Senator Jerry Moran, R.-Kan., speaking about American economic growth.

The infographic below highlights some other data points, like most viewed topics and which issues received the most votes. There is even more data on the YouTube blog. The team went through all the town hall transcripts to find out which words were most used by each party. For example, while addressing the topic of Afghanistan, Republicans talked about “progress,” “withdrawal” and “success,” whereas Democrats talked about “war,” “mission” and “security.”

The advertising community is up in arms about a proposal that would make top-level domain names open-ended.

Under ICANN’s so-called “dot-whatever” plan, a company like Pepsi would be compelled to buy the “.pepsi” domain and whatever other iterations might apply. On Monday, the Interactive Advertising Bureau voiced its displeasure with the scheme, charging it would force advertisers to bid on the domains against cybersquatters, causing “incalculable financial damage” to brands.

The IAB’s opposition came after the Association of National Advertisers had also called on ICANN to abandon the plan. On Tuesday, another big group representing advertisers, the 4A’s, went public with its opposition. After one year on the music/tech scene, Shuffler.fm has made quite a name for itself as a tool for music discovery. Now, the web app is out with a slew of upgrades, and the news that an iPad app is on its way.

Shuffler.fm launched last summer as a kind of Pandora/StumbleUpon for music blogs, allowing you to surf through blogs whilst listening to jams covered.

The site has built out its functionality, allowing users to listen to tunes from one music blog — a kind of blog radio station — as they surf that blog. This was a feature that we really wanted in the first iteration of the service, which automatically shuffled blog posts when a song finished playing (you had to pause a song if you wanted to read the rest of the blog). Now, Shuffler.fm is much more like Spin magazine’s iPad app, which allows you to listen to all the tracks in the mag while you read (which is probably no coincidence, seeing as how Shuffler partnered with Spin a few months back to provide a similar functionality on the magazine’s website).

New features also include the ability to check out popular songs and artists, search for music and news from your favorite artists (a great way to find playable tracks from acts that you’re into), and to save tracks to your own playlist, as well as subscribe to blogs. Music blogs can also easily add their blogs to Shuffler.

Shuffler has also given us a sneak peek at its iPad app, which isn’t quite ready for primetime (bug city). Keep an eye on Mash, though, for a walkthrough when it hits the iTunes Store.

The iPad’s popularity has prompted Google to revive a program that aggregated catalogs from major retailers.

The new app, called Google Catalogs, is designed for “all major tablet devices” though it is just available in an iPad version now. The app displays the catalogs in rich media. Dozens of retailers, including L.L. Bean, Macy’s and Saks Fifth Avenue are providing content for the app.

Google Catalogs includes features familiar with other tablet apps, like zooming and the ability to share content. But the app also lets you buy content via online stores. It also directs you to nearby brick-and-mortar locations.

Google shuttered a similar program, called Google Catalog Search, in 2009 because of a lack of consumer interest.

Something new has popped up on Starbucks’s menu: free iPhone apps.

This week, the coffee giant started dispensing gift cards good for the free apps in stores, according to various reports. Starbucks has been offering free songs from iTunes since 2007, but the apps appear to be something new. Reps from Starbucks could not be reached for comment.

The first app to be offered under the plan is Shazam Encore, a music-identifying app that sells for $5.99 on iTunes.

What can you use the application for?


Goalscape.com takes a unique approach to the act of setting goals. The system uses a circular goal chart. The user’s main goal appears at the very center. The user can add secondary layers and list sub goals that fall within the larger one. The user can continue to add layers as much as they have to. Goalscape also accounts for the fact that time and resources are limited. The user can shift a goal to make it larger on the chart. As the goal grows wider, the other goals shrink accordingly. This allows the user to get an overall picture of where they are allotting their time and energy to make sure their chart is realistic. As the user completes tasks for each portion of the goal chart, that portion begins to fill in and all related areas do the same. The user can click on layers to view a separate goal map that includes only that item and all related items. When viewing individual goals, the user can always see the larger chart which appears as an icon on the page. Goalscape is available for Safari, Internet Explorer, FireFox and Google Chrome browsers. Users can also download a desktop version for Apple and Windows computers as well as an iPhone app.

What is the history and popularity of the application?


Goalscape.com was created in 2006. The application was intended to give internet users an improved way of keeping track of all their goals. The team behind Goalscape is based in Kiel, Germany. The application has been officially patented in the United States. Many users have discovered that Goalscape takes an in depth approach to goal setting. Rather than listing tasks, the user can also see how many resources they can devote to a specific area and how that will affect their ability to work on other aspects of their goal.

What are the differences to other apps?


The approach taken by Goalscape is what makes it so unique. There are a number of applications that allow users to manage goals and build to do lists. Goalscape offers a similar service but in an improved way. The user can actually see how the number of tasks they have affects existing tasks. The application also records progress on individual tasks as well as broader areas that affect the user’s main goal.

How does the application look and feel to use?


The goal chart created by Goalscape is where it all happens. The user is presented with a circular chart. Additional layers can be added, that cause the chart to resize. The user can drag the corners of each item added to their chart to increase or decrease the amount of size that item takes up (which effectively represents the amount of time and resources required for that item). A list of tools can be found along the right side while a small icon depicts where the chart falls on the user’s overall goal chart.

How does the registration process work?


A new user can try the free trial of Goalscape by clicking the green and white “Register for Free Trial” button found near the center of the homepage. A second button to the left allows the user to install a free trial directly onto their desktop. After clicking the first button, a pop up box appears and asks the user to provide an email address. The user must also successfully enter a CAPTCHA code before clicking the blue and white “Create New Account” button at the bottom of the box. Once the form has been submitted, the user must check their email inbox for an activation message to complete registration.

What does it cost to use the application?


A desktop version is available for purchase on the Goalscape website. Users who would like to buy the desktop application can access their goals while offline. The purchase includes a single user perpetual license that permits the user to install and activate the application on two computers. The desktop version costs around $130. Updates are included in the purchase price.

Who would you recommend the application to?


Goalscape.com could be interesting tool for anyone who is serious about accomplishing goals. The application can be accessed a number of ways and allows the user to tailor their goal chart to their specific needs. The interface is easy to understand and provides the user with a complete visualization that depicts their goal status and resource requirements.

Let’s imagine Microsoft two years ago, gazing longingly at Apple’s just-released Magic Mouse and wondering how Microsoft might jump into the buttonless mouse game. Cut to the present day, and the Redmond giant has released Touchmouse, specifically created for Windows 7. How does it measure up? We have one in our hands and put it through its paces.

After plugging in Touchmouse’s thumbnail-sized wireless dongle and inserting its batteries, it was ready to go, its software installed automatically. Following a beautifully produced introductory practice session, in a few minutes I had learned the intuitive multi-touch gestures that make Touchmouse work.

It’s so easy to use, there’s hardly anything to learn. Swipe down with three fingers, and all your windows are minimized; do the opposite and they’re all laid out so you can choose one. Swipe down with two fingers and the window you’re working on is minimized, and vice versa. You can also scroll left or right, say, on an Excel spreadsheet, by moving your finger in the direction desired.

An elegant addition: When you perform any of these multi-touch swipe moves, they’re accompanied by an attractive mini-animation next to your cursor, showing little blue representations of your fingertips moving, complete with misty blue trails that fade away. It’s a hint of how well-integrated the drivers are with Windows 7.

Those gestures are all useful, but the Touchmouse’s best trick is its scrolling, giving you iPhone-like smooth slides up and down long webpages. You can smoothly scroll in tiny precision increments, and with a quick flick of one finger, zip through multiple pages in an instant. This is as good as scroll control gets.

The hardest thing for me to get used to was clicking on the left or right mouse areas without any actual buttons involved. When you click with this Touchmouse, the entire front of the mouse leans forward. It feels slightly awkward at first, but I noticed that awkward feeling going away after a few minutes.

Easier to get used to are the thumb gestures, where a quick swipe of your thumb toward the right jumps forward on a webpage (or does whatever you’d like to configure it to do), and a similar gesture toward the left with your thumb can let you jump backward to a previous page. This can be configured for lefties, too. If your thumb naturally wanders around your mouse from time to time, you might have slight difficulty with accidental activations of this, but that was not a big issue for me.

Perhaps the most important attribute of the Touchmouse is the way it feels in your hand. Accustomed to Logitech devices that are designed to be a bit taller in the palm, I think this low-slung Microsoft mouse is just the right shape. Microsoft is a longtime expert in mouse ergonomics, and continues its tradition with this product. However, all hands are different, so I’d suggest putting your mitts on one in the real world before you commit to spending your hard-earned $67.

Finally, just look at the mysterious sculptural allure of the Microsoft Touchmouse. Its beauty goes much more than skin deep. Unlike Apple’s Magic Mouse, the magic in Microsoft’s Touchmouse is embodied in how perfectly it fits your hand and how well its gestural software works with Windows 7. Its aesthetics are a matter of taste, but I found its voluptuous shape and the embossed “X” motif of its sensor area quite captivating. Take a look at our gallery below and see if you agree:

As part of an effort to support LGBT teens, an online campaign wants Sesame Street‘s Bert and Ernie — the male puppet roommates with an Odd Couple-esque relationship — to say “I do.”

The campaign includes a petition on Change.org and a Facebook Page that has already amassed a rather large following. The petition has garnered close to 8,000 signatures in nine days.

“We are not asking that Sesame Street do anything crude or disrespectful,” it reads. “Only that they allow Bert & Ernie to marry, or even add a transgender character to the show. It can be done in a tasteful way.”

The petition’s creator, Lair Scott, was inspired by the “It Gets Better” series of videos launched by columnist Dan Savage. “The videos are giving support and hope to the youth out there, and I am just trying to do the same,” says Scott.

Sesame Streetresponded to the petition Thursday on its Facebook Page — pointing out that the puppets are neither gay nor straight.

“Bert and Ernie are best friends. They were created to teach preschoolers that people can be good friends with those who are very different from themselves,” says the post. “Even though they are identified as male characters and possess many human traits and characteristics (as most Sesame Street Muppets do), they remain puppets, and do not have a sexual orientation.”

The service, which is still in beta, comes from the Stickybits team and resembles AOL chatrooms of old — a series of user-created, browser-based chatroom/listening rooms where “DJs” (a.k.a. you and others) can play songs, vote on how “lame” or “awesome” those songs are, score points for picking good tunes, and chat with others. You can choose songs from a MediaNet-powered library or upload your own. Sadly, the site is no longer open to anyone outside the U.S. because of Turntable’s efforts to stay DMCA compliant.

As we approach the fall, all the rumors of the Apple empire descend upon us. And this year may be the craziest yet because for the first time since the iPhone’s inception, Apple did not release new hardware in the summer. And there are still whispers of an iPad revamp as well. iOS 5 is coming. iCloud is coming. And then there are the iPods which are traditionally updated in the fall timeframe each year. Things are already getting crazy enough that potential Apple announcement dates are topping Techmeme one minute, and then stories debunking those dates are the top story in tech the next minute.

This will only get worse.

But there’s a reason people write up these rumors. Because people read these rumors. And the reason they do that is because sometimes those rumors are correct. And more often than that, they’re at least somewhat correct. That hope keeps peoples’ imaginations running wild. Now it’s time for me to indulge that.

One rumor that caught my eye this week was the talk of Apple looking into releasing an “iCloud Phone” alongside a new iPhone 5 this fall. This actually isn’t a new rumor so much as it’s a repurposed one. If you’ve heard talk about the “iPhone 4S”, this is the same potential device. It’s the “cheap iPhone” that TechCrunch and others have written about in the past. Given the smoke out there, it would seem that there’s something to this rumor. Even Apple’s executives have hinted at the possibility.

But the iCloud angle is a particularly interesting one. That doesn’t mean it’s entirely accurate necessarily, just interesting. First reported by Apple ‘N’ Apps, Trevor Sheridan writes:

It has come to our attention that Apple is planning to combine iOS 5 and iCloud with a piece of hardware internally referred to as the iCloud iPhone. The iCloud iPhone will rely heavily on Apple’s new cloud based offering, and less on internal storage.

He continues:

Apple is aiming for a $400 final price for the iCloud iPhone as compared to the typical $600 iPhone price, which the iPhone 5 will cost. The carrier subsidization will bring the cost to consumers down to free with a 2 year contract for the iCloud iPhone with the same $199 iPhone cost for the iPhone 5.

He cites three independent sources on the information, and notes that a modified iPhone 4 design is likely to be used for such a device.

Reducing the internal storage in the iPhone is certainly one way Apple could reduce the overall cost of the device. Plus, Apple has spent the past year and a half perfecting the manufacturing of the iPhone 4, so you can be sure costs in that regard have come down. On the face of it, this makes some sense.

But the larger question remains if the world is ready for a cloud-based smartphone? And there’s a side question: what if this cloud phone is a data-only device?

To the first question, with Apple rolling out iCloud this fall, the timing could be right. Apple hasn’t turned on things like music streaming from the cloud yet, but they easily could. They recently did this with an Apple TV update for television shows. If you have an always-connected device, this concept could work. Storage would be needed for apps and perhaps a little for offline usage, but overall, maybe Apple could get away with a device with just a few gigabytes or so of onboard storage.

The second question is different. After we reported on Apple’s work on a cheaper iPhone, a few people reached out wondering if the iPod touch could simply morph into this product? In other words, Apple could upgrade the iPod touch with an iPhone 4 body, including the 3G radio.

If that’s Apple’s thinking for this product, it may be the perfect opportunity to create a phone that doesn’t offer traditional phone service. As in, it would be data-only.

Now, the carriers probably would have a hard time with this concept. But if Apple sold it as more of an iPod touch with 3G capabilities, they may bite. The carriers are currently making no money off of the iPod touch, which is a hugely popular product. It remains WiFi-only. If they offered a $29-a-month data plan, or pay-as-you-go, it could be a really compelling new source of revenue.

And to consumers, Apple could tout it as more of a “lite” phone. It can do everything the iPhone can, except make phone calls. And really, thanks to apps like Skype, FaceTime, etc, it can do that too — maybe they just don’t play that up as much at first.

Without full $60 or $70-a-month plans for cellular minutes and data, the carriers probably wouldn’t subsidize the cost of such a device down to $0. But they might be able to get close if Apple was able to make the device cheaply enough. The low-end iPod touch is currently $229. But then again, contracts are one more headache for consumers, so maybe Apple would be more in favor of selling the device cheaply without a contract, and allowing consumers to pay for 3G service on the go, like they do with the 3G iPads.

The concept of a data-only phone has been around for a while. In November of 2009, we reported that Google was looking into possibly offering their own Android devices which would be data-only. This didn’t happen, obviously. Instead, Google not only fully hopped into bed with the carriers for their Nexus devices, they got really close for maximum snuggling and abandoned their broader Android dreams.

Whether or not Apple takes this path this year, it’s pretty clear that this is the future. Eventually, carriers will exist as data dealers. All information, including voice calls will happen over this pipe. Cellular phone service will just be an optional add-on if you’re in an area with a bad data connection. Apple could kick-start this movement in the coming months. Or they might not. But someone will.

Before this week, the Google Plus iOS app was unable to run on the iPad. this week’s update changed that, and brought additional fixes. However, you’ll still be stuck using it in an iPhone sized version on the iPad. Our Jon Mitchell writes that he still prefers the mobile Web version on the iPad to the iPhone-sized experience.
