After all, don’t forget Picasso’s famous quote that’s been popularized by Steve Jobs: “Good artists copy. Great artists steal.” After the break, we’ve put together a list of a dozen of our favorite sites that can get you inspired to create and help you get feedback on the things you’ve created.

Get Inspired and Share Your Best Work

There’s many ways you could share your new designs with the world, and there’s many ways to get inspired about design. These sites bring the best of both together. They let you share your best designs for cred and feedback, and let you get inspired by looking at the logos, typefaces, letterpress, websites, and more that the top people in design are making today.

Some are more exclusive than others, so it might take a Just looking, no touching period before your ready to share your designs. But be careful: it’s easy to waste hours admiring the beautiful designs on these sites instead of actually making your own work!

Dribbble

Dribbble

Dribbble is the the world’s most popular site for sharing designs, and most of the art here is nothing short of mindblowing. But don’t rush out to sign up. While anyone can now sign up to comment and favorite shots, only the select few who are special enough to get a coveted Dribbble invite can share their work. But that’s ok. There’s enough beautiful stuff on Dribbble, you can still use it to get inspiration even if you don’t have an invite. It’s a great place to catch a glimpse of the best upcoming sites, apps, and more from the top designers in the world. Plus, the Envato design team regularly shares their latest creations on the Envato Design Team Dribbble page, so be sure to check it out to get a glimpse of what’s next for our family of sites!

Favwork

Favwork

Favwork is a newer site for sharing your designs and voting up the ones you want. It’s designed somewhat like Dribbble, but is open for anyone in the whole wide world with a Twitter account. You can whip together your designs, upload them, and share them with your friends and colleagues to see what they think. That doesn’t guarantee your design will get to the front page, though. Even though Favwork isn’t as large as Dribbble, it’s already got a large number of beautiful designs that can inspire you.

Forrst

Forrst

Forrst is a fast-growing community full of everything design-related: logos, mockups, articles on design, sample code for web design, and more. Just like most of the other site,s you can mark your favorite items, and give feedback on the things others have made. It’s almost like a customized Tumblr just for sharing your design stuff with the community, and is very nicely done. It’s also a private site, but it’s a tad easier to get Forrst invites than Dribbble invites.

Creattica

Creattica

Creattica is Envato’s own design inspiration site, and it includes an incredibly wide range of creative works. From business cards to desktop wallpapers to advertisements, you’ll find brilliant examples of the best in design here. You can subscribe to each type of design in an RSS feed so you never miss the latest stuff in your favorite category. And if you’d like to see your own work featured, you can create an account and submit it to the editor as well.

Designmoo

Designmoo

Designmoo is a design site with a mission. It’s designed to let leading designers share some of their favorite designs with the community, complete with the original source files. If you find something that inspires you, you can usually download the PSD file to tweak it for your own use or learn how others put their designs together. If you’ve got something to contribute, you can create an account and join in the fun.

Bēhance

Bēhance

The Bēhance network is a great place to look at designs and images from a variety of creative industries. It’s used by many leading firms to discover upcoming talent, so if you think you’ve got a chance at design stardom, you can feature your pictures on it and create your own creative portfolio. With full-sized images, it’s got a different focus than the other design sites we listed, but it’s still a great spot to get inspired or share your work with the world.

Zootool

Zootool

Zootool may be a bookmarking tool, but it’s one of the best for saving the design inspirations you come across online. All of your bookmarks are viewable as image galleries, which you can flip through for inspiration or share with the world. You can also view popular public bookmarks from your account, giving you a fresh dose of inspiration every time you log in. GitHub

Github: If coding design you crave, Github may just be your fave

GitHub isn’t the first thing you’d think of when looking for design inspiration. It’s a site to store your source code in Git, and quickly find and fork other publicly available code.  Not the kind of thing designers usually are looking for. But, most web design is powered by intricitate CSS and HTML code, and there’s tons on GitHub for you to learn from. When you’re ready to get serious about coding that masterful site, check out what the pros are doing with CSS and more, and find some great new Javascript to integrate into your site. And When Feedback’s All You Need…

Sometimes, you’ve already got all the inspiration you need, and you’re not ready to share your design with the world. In fact, you might want to get some more private feedback from the people you trust the most. In that case, there’s some great design apps that are ready for you. Here’s some of our favorites.

CloudApp

CloudApp

CloudApp is one of my most-used apps, both to share random images and files with others, and to get feedback on quick snippets of text or parts of a design. You can upload files through the web app, or drag-and-drop them to the Cloud icon in your Mac menu bar or FluffyApp in Windows. Your files can be kept private or shared with the world: your choice. Upgrade to a pro account, and you can share your designs, text, links, and more with your own private short URLs, too. Notebox

Notebox

Notebox is designed for getting feedback on designes of all types. Upload your images, PDFs, or any other design file, add your own notes about the design, and share it with anyone you want. One great option is to share multiple styles of your design, then check and see everyone’s feedback on the different ones to see which one will be a hit. FiveSecondTest is a brilliant way to see if your design comes across to viewers like you think it will. Just upload your image, then enter questions to see what your design made users think of. If people figured out what your design was for, congrats … you must be on the right track! Otherwise, you can go back to the drawing board and tweak your design so it makes sense to everyone.

Conclusion

If great resources and examples could make you a world-class designer, then we’d all be making such beautiful works of art that the MoMA would be overflowing with designs. Sadly, it takes more than just looking at designs to get good at it. You’ve got to keep trying, get feedback, incorporate it into your design, rinse, and repeat. Once you’ve done it enough, you’ll be able to take the best ideas and put them together with your creativity into something so impressive and unique that it’s finally your own true work.

Good artists borrow great artists steal
— Pablo Picasso

I’m sure you’ve seen the above quote before. What does it really mean? Is it an ok from one of the world’s great artists to literally steal from others? Is it an excuse to ignore copyright? No and no. It’s a much deeper statement about the creative process.

Steal Like an Artist

What does it mean to steal like an artist? What was Picasso trying to say?

When you borrow something you plan on giving it back. At least you’re supposed to. When you steal something you make it your own. It’s the making it your own that Picasso was suggesting.

Great artists stealing doesn’t mean they copy the work of others and pass it off as their own. It means they so absorb the work and ideas of others that they can recombine everything with their own work and thoughts to create something truly theirs.

It’s a similar idea to the Medici effect, the idea of finding intersections at the crossroads of ideas in different disciplines and combining what you find into something new or unique to your discipline.

To make ideas your own you need to take them apart to understand how they were put together and why they were put together in a certain way. You have to assimilate and internalize those ideas so they mix with your own.

A few years ago I published a post about developing your voice as a blogger and suggested that your voice is what comes out after everything you take in is filtered through your thoughts and experiences.

Your voice as a writer, an artist, or a designer is the end product of this artistic theft Picasso talks about.

Your voice comes from filtering things through the sum of all your thoughts and experience. When you steal from other artists you do two things.

• Provide new source material to run through your filter
• Modify your filter for future source material

Vincent Van Gogh often referred to himself as a link in a chain. He saw his work as building on the work of those who came before him and leaving something behind for those who came after to build on top of.

In essence he stole from past masters, internalized what he took, reformed it as something of his own, and left it for others to then steal and continue the process.

How You Can Steal And Grow as a Designer

Assuming you’re on board with the idea of stealing as Picasso meant it here are a few ideas for how you can learn to steal better in order to grow as a designer.

• Collect ideas, inspiration, and techniques
• Set a path for your growth and see and collect everything along that path
• Seek quality over quantity
• Read, read, and read some more
• Look deeper at things. Take the time to understand how and why things work
• Live in the crossroads. Increase the probability of the Medici effect

Collect

Again the stealing part is about taking things in so your first step to steal and grow as a designer is to collect.

As Austin Kleon points out it’s not about collecting indiscriminately, but rather selectively. Much of what’s below is how to collect selectively.

Set a Path

Have you ever noticed once you become interested in some topic that you start noticing information about that topic wherever you go. I know when I start studying something like typography it seems like every magazine or blog post is about typefaces and line-height, and measure.

It’s not some mystical thing at work. It’s simply that you’re more attentive to the things you’re interested in.

It’s important to set the path for your collections. What finds its way into your consciousness is what you develop an interest in. Put a little thought into how you want to grow as a designer. Set a direction for yourself. You’ll discover yourself finding more things on that path to collect.

Seek Quality

You’re only going to be as good as the ideas and techniques you collect. Garbage in, garbage out. If you want to produce the best work you need to take in the best ideas.

What we collect and take in becomes the source material for what we create. The better the source material, the better the resulting end product.

Read, Read, Read

One of the best ways to collect ideas is to read the ideas of others. Again read selectively. Read those things you’re interested in and seek quality over quantity. Read the theory behind design to understand why different design principles work.

Look Deeper

When I first started learning to build websites I would stop whenever I found a site I liked and start pouring over the code. I’d look at how the html was structured and how the css presented that html. I’d ask myself why the designer had chosen to do things that way and think if there was a better way to accomplish the same thing.

When I didn’t have time to study the code at that moment, I’d bookmark the site and come back later to study it.

That’s still one of the best way to learn how to develop websites. Think of your favorite sites as your mentors. They’re all willing to tell you exactly how to develop a site of your own. Study their designs. Ask yourself why one design element is red or why another is off to the corner.

When you come across sites giving away snippets of code don’t just copy the snippet and paste it into your site. When you copy code like that you borrow it. You don’t make that code your own. You won’t understand how to apply that code to a different problem or how to fix it when it doesn’t work. You won’t own the code. It will own you.

Read the tutorial explaining how the code works or better yet study it on your own. You can certainly use the code without doing either, but again you won’t own it that way. You’ll be borrowing it.

Always look deeper than what’s on the surface in everything. You borrow the surface. When you dig deeper you steal what you unearth.

Live in the Crossroads

Don’t limit yourself to collecting from the world of design. Look beyond design for inspiration and ideas. Collect things from other disciplines and think how they might be applied to a design problem.

Be receptive to The Medici Effect (PDF)

Learn how other industries solve problems. Ask yourself if those solutions will work for some design problems you come across. Be open to taking in ideas that seem unrelated on the surface. Those ideas will modify your filter in unique and interesting ways.

Write more to be a better designer and design more to be a better writer. Learn a wider variety of things to see the commonalities between them.

Summary

Good artists borrow. They copy the techniques of others, but they never make those techniques their own. They never learn to apply them in ways beyond how they were originally presented.

Great artists steal. They internalize the ideas and techniques of others, mix them with everything else they have inside, and release them in new and interesting ways. By stealing they make those ideas and techniques their own.

Stealing in the sense Picasso meant isn’t about ripping off your fellow designers. It’s about learning what you can from them and filtering their ideas through yourself in order to build something new.

Be a link in the chain of design. Build on the ideas of others and leave behind something of yourself for other designers to build on.

In this way we all become better and we all push design further.

I am … and I do …

My name is Luca Molnar and I am a 20-year old digital artist from Hungary. I’ve been working in the industry in past 5 years and I’m studying illustration at the university. I got into designing …

When I was in high school a guy held a presentation about web design and Photoshop, so me and my best friend went and I liked it. After that I was starting reading tutorials and stuff, but for about 2 years I only cared about web design, and then realized how horrible boring that was. I started creating illustrations and basically that’s the story.

I get my inspiration from …

From anywhere. More specifically I always listen music while I’m working; I’m crazy about all kinds of arts.  I can stare at pictures for hours; I’m also inspired by nature and by great artists. I have a huge weakness for beautiful music videos, lights and fashion magazines.

In the beginning I promoted myself  … . Now I am marketing myself …

This is probably the hardest question, this is the question every new designer is interested in. At the beginning it was really painful, I mean the money was horrible and the clients were even worse, at the top of it I wasn’t a good illustrator at the time either. Anyway I was sending messages to anyone I thought maybe could give some work, I’m talking about freelance projects. Well, this wasn’t really working. Now I’m represented by an agency, so I get commissions from there and sometimes I’m also working on some projects with the KDU, other times the client just see my works and sends me an email.

I think the future of design …

I love talking about it, so thanks for asking! I think we will see more abstract stuff and in general everything will be more artistic, since the designers become better and better. Probably we will see more geometric forms and more gray and pastel colors. I think the illustrations will be more clean and elegant.

Very often I stumble upon some great artists at DeviantART. There are some amazing pieces of work there, from photography to sculptures and illustrations. For me, there isn’t just one good style of illustration, but many.

I sure love illustration, and for many years now I’ve been following many great artists at DeviantART. I could check the evolution of many illustrators, and one of the is Daniel Conway. His pieces are fantastic.

I just love to find out about great artists that live nearby. Rafael Albuquerque is a Brazilian illustrator from our home city, Porto Alegre. It’s great to find such an amazing artist from our town.
