Apple confirmed its plans to build a data center in Maiden, North Carolina in 2009. But despite images of the 500,000 square-foot facility from news organizations and a citizen helicopter videographer, evidence of its construction only appeared on Google Earth around the time that Apple pre-announced its new cloud-based service offering, iCloud.

Fortune‘s Philip Elmer-Dewitt first noticed that the facility was missing from Google Earth back in October 2010. The address of the 183-acre land parcel that Apple had purchased the year before showed a real farm instead of a server farm even though video footage of a massive white building at the address had emerged on YouTube.

After the iCloud pre-announcement, Elmer-Dewitt checked the address again on Google Earth — something he says he did two weeks before, only to find green farms. This time the satellite image included Apple’s massive building, which has little employee parking and a single road leading in and out. As suspected since 2009, it looks a lot like a building that might host an ambitious cloud project like iCloud.

“How was Apple able to keep Google (GOOG) from displaying this particular swath of satellite imagery — imagery provided by the USDA Farm Services Agency? That’s still a mystery,” Elmer-Dewitt writes.

Google has not yet responded to our request for a comment.

There will be a run on Royal Wedding related Twitter hash tags, Facebook will explode with posts from ladies who dream of being in Middleton’s place, and of course, YouTube and Google will be in on the fun as well. In fact, YouTube will be streaming the event live, and some publications think the video king of the Internet could see viewership records broken as people flock together around mobile devices and laptops everywhere, eager to get a glimpse at the attractive couple.

It almost reminds one of a family gathering around the radio; however, in order to capture it correctly for this generation, instead of a black and white photograph, the medium would be a mash-up video of various people watching the event on their computer. With that in mind, it’s hard not to picture the video looking like a Chatroulette session.

Currently, there’s a countdown page on YouTube’s page for the Royal Family — the Royal Channel, naturally enough — reminding us that currently, only six days and 12 hours remain until the most anticipated wedding of the 21st century, considering the massive amounts of hype, anyway, kicks off. Interested YouTube members can upload best wishes and congratulatory videos if they so choose, which is the 21st century version of signing the wedding book:

YouTube’s page for the Royal Wedding also features the Buckingham-Palace-to-Westminster-Abbey procession route the couple will travel, making use of Google Maps in order to do so. There’s already a Google Earth-powered video of the route, which was previously discussed by WebProNews:

As for the records in doubt, as pointed out by The Vancouver Sun, the previous viewer record for a live stream was set when approximately 30 million viewers watched the YouTube Symphony Orchestra concert. If the whole world is indeed watching this wedding, creative license-ly speaking, of course, then that number should fall quite easily.

YouTube’s coverage starts an hour before the Royal Wedding does, giving users ample time to get their drink orders in and fulfilled.

Most of us won’t be able to go to Cowboys Stadium on Sunday for Super Bowl XLV, but Google is offering the next best thing: a 3D Google Earth model that lets you fly around, over, inside and through the stadium.

The best news of all? This virtual tour is free. If you haven’t already, download Google Earth, type “Cowboys Stadium” in its search field, turn on Google Earth’s 3D layer and wait a couple of seconds. A detailed 3D model of Cowboys Stadium comes to life, and with a little mousing around, you can fly all over the thing.

We’re wondering if Google will fill the stands with 3D virtual screaming fans during the Super Bowl. We want the virtual version of that 2,100-inch “Jerry-Tron,” the largest HDTV screen in the world at 152 by 72 feet, to light up with a live feed. Unlikely.

Google and NORAD (North American Aerospace Defence Command) have teamed up once again to help you follow Santa as he travels around the world, jumping chimneys, delivering presents, and generally being very jolly.

Right now, Santa is still preparing his route, muttering to his reindeer and killing time with some basketball, but soon he’ll start flying, and you won’t miss a thing if you tune into www.noradsanta.org.

There you can see Santa’s current location and his next stop on a Google Map; you can also watch the “Santa Cam” videos and learn more about each city Santa visits by clicking on the gift icons.

If you’re the 3D-loving type, you can switch over to the (much more attractive) Google Earth view with the Google Earth plugin which you can install here.

Google Earth Now Has Trees

Google Earth goes mostly under the radar and doesn’t get as much buzz as other Google products do. Version 6 of this desktop app is now available for download for all major OS platforms. With Google Earth 6, you can explore the streets in 3D like never before, and now you can see 3D trees in locations all over the world. Trees ensure much more detail to the location you are viewing. Just fly from outer space down to the streets with the new Street View and easily navigate your way around. You can also switch to ground-level view to see the same location in 3D.

LastPass Acquires Xmarks

LastPass acquires Xmarks

Formerly known as Foxmarks, Xmarks is a very popular Firefox plugin (now available for other browsers too) that helps millions of users sync their bookmarks in the cloud. Couple of months ago, they had decided to shut down the service due to a lack of funds. Lots of users pledged to help Xmarks out of a pickle and now they’ve found a buyer.

LastPass, the cloud based password manager and form filler app, is their new owner. Xmarks is transitioning to a “freemium” business model and the browser add-on will remain free. Users can now opt to purchase Xmarks Premium for $12 per year, which includes new enhanced features like Android and iPhone mobile phone apps, priority support, and more. If you are planning to go with Xmarks and LastPass Premium bundle, it will cost you little less.

Google to Boot Piracy Sites Off AdSense

Internet piracy groups are a real sneaky bunch of people. They constantly find new ways to profit from content that is not legally owned by them. You don’t have to be a member of a forum or torrent site to find pirated content, links to such content are indexed just like anyother webpage and show up in search results maximizing the damage to content owners. Google takes down these links from their index when the copyright holders complain but there are millions of links out there with newer ones showing up by the hour.

From now Google will stop auto completing keywords related to piracy and will kick sites promoting piracy of Google AdSense, a major source of revenue. Earlier this year, pirates lost a major revenue stream when popular file sharing site RapidShare abolished the Rapid Points system and Google new move id sure to hurt them more.

New in Labs: Smart Mute and Easier Ways to Unmute

If you are someone who subscribes to a lot of mailing lists or receive a lot of promotional offers and other mails of less significance, use the smart mute feature to prevent them entering the inbox in the future. Can’t wait to try it out!

Onlive promotes cloud based video game processing, allowing games to run without game consoles or high-end computers, introducing a paradigm shift in the game purchase and download market. You can try games for free and rent them for a three or five day period for a fee. Now with the introduction of PlayPack, users can play games all day, every day, for just $9.99/month. PlayPack will come out of beta in mid-January and the service is free for all members until then.

Google Chrome Hits Version 8

Google has silently updated Chrome to version 8. It is a well known fact that Chrome follows an aggressive development cycle and their versioning system is a bit different from others. How else can you explain a browser launched couple of years ago to hit 8.0 while Firefox is still at 3.x? The update fixes a lot of bugs and major features include support for a built-in PDF viewer.

Advertising is the bread and butter of YouTube and its video producers. Level headed people understand that the content creator has bills to pay and are Ok with ads in the videos. The problem is ads that are unbearable to watch. Dubbed as TrueView video ads, YouTube’s new feature now allows the viewer to skip ads that do not interest them. It is not being forced upon all video publishers yet, but Google is working towards giving viewer choice and control.

Google has announced the release of Google Earth 6. The latest version is available today for Windows, OS X and Linux.

The update includes:

• Integrated Street View - The Google Maps Street View experience is now fully integrated into Google Earth. Pegman (the little guy that represents your Street View position) is now docked alongside the Google Earth navigation controls, where he launches Street View just like he does in Google Maps. The difference here is that you can go from orbiting the earth to standing in front of your childhood home. It may be a little disorienting.
• 3D Trees - While Google Earth has supported 3D buildings for some time, trees were only recently added to liven up the environments. The addition allows those using walking navigations to take direct paths and — as the video illustrates — not walk into trees. It also keeps the landscape from looking like a desolate wasteland.
• Better Historical Imagery - Historical imagery allows users to look at map views of times like Warsaw in 1935, London in 1945 and Port-au-Prince Haiti before and after the January earthquake. The feature was first added in Google Earth 5, but it wasn’t always clear when and where it was available. In Google Earth 6, the date of the oldest imagery will appear in the status bar at the bottom of the screen.

All in all, Google Earth 6 is more of a refinement than an outright overhaul, but if you’re a fan of Google Earth, you’re going to want to grab the new version stat. If you’ve never used the service, maybe this video demonstration will change your mind:

First up was the new iLife ’11 suite, and iPhoto was the first up. Apple is adding quite a few new features to their popular photo organization tool, including some new printing options as well as a new full-screen mode.



The new full screen mode makes it easier for you to browser around your images. They’ve also added a Google Earth-like mode for geotagged photos where it will show you were your photos were taken on sort of a virtual Earth that you can zoom down to street level to see.

They’re also adding a new auto-slideshow feature where it’ll take your pictures and create a snappy slideshow video with music and transitions. This actually seems pretty nice, though I don’t know how much of a market it’ll get.

iPhoto also will be getting some new e-mail integration, allowing you to send formatted e-mails right from the suite. Social networking integration is also included. You’ll be able to share it directly to Facebook or Flickr, and you’ll even be able view Facebook comments on your photo from iPhoto. Pretty all-inclusive.

Apple also has overhauled their printing options for iPhoto. In case you didn’t know, the last version of iPhoto has allowed you to have your stuff professionally printed. They’ve added some new options on that front, and they’ve also added letterpress cards, too.

There are still “For Sale” signs on most streets, many of the partially built condominium buildings downtown and in midtown still sit empty and the homeless population is still very prevalent. However, many signs of new beginnings are also easy to find.

In South Florida, on the other hand, it is a whole different story. Unlike Atlanta where some areas of growth can be found, in South Florida, they seem to be having a more difficult time recovering. I love South Florida, specifically the Miami area, and I certainly don’t want to criticize such a beautiful place; however, the greed of developers in that area is no secret to anyone. I’m sure an economist/real estate expert could explain exactly why this is true, but that isn’t the point of this article.

I’m here to show you some Google Earth aerial photographs, which look like artwork created by these developers. I was taken aback by these for a few reasons. First of all, I’m blown away by how densely populated some of these neighborhoods are. I’m also a little surprised at the lack of creativity shown here. However, most of all, I find these photographs very interesting in an artistic way.

As one person commented in the original Boston.com article, “The greed of the developers here is shown in an ironically beautiful way.” Yep, that pretty much sums it up for me too. In the end, I would still enjoy living in South Florida. It’s a magical place full of culture. It’s like its own little planet.

Ayn Rand is getting some pretty heavy endorsement via GPS of late, as one man — Nick Newcomen — recently drove 12,328 miles across 30 American states to scrawl “Read Ayn Rand” via GPS data inputted into Google Earth.

Newcomen — who explained to Wired that he undertook this mission simply because he is a Rand fan — took more than 30 days to execute this task, using a GPS logger (Qstarz BT-Q1000X) to create the letters. He started in Marshall, Texas, where he began writing out “Rand,” and then drove on (turning off the GPS whilst not writing) until the entire, “Reading Is Fundamental” sentiment was complete.

You can check out more info on the site World’s Biggest Writing, which also features David Lynchian videos of locations Newcomen visited, most ending with a shot of his almost expressionless face (see below).

Although we understand that Newcomen is passionate about the famed Atlas Shrugged author (we’re all groupies of someone, amirite?) we can’t help but wonder what Rand herself would have thought of the stunt. After all, part of Objectivism, a philosophical system she developed, states: “Man—every man—is an end in himself, not the means to the ends of others. He must exist for his own sake, neither sacrificing himself to others nor sacrificing others to himself. The pursuit of his own rational self-interest and of his own happiness is the highest moral purpose of his life.”

To that end, perhaps Newcomen should have scrawled his own name across the States — but, you know, whatever floats your fountainhead…

Yes, Google Earth 5.2 is now supposed to account for both rain and snow – everything "from light drizzle and snow to hurricanes and blizzards," in fact – at least in some regions of North America and Europe. 

As for how a person can take advantage of the new feature, it’s not at all complicated.  Software engineer Quarup Barreirinhas explained on the LatLong Blog, "First enable the clouds layer, then zoom in to a particular location where it might be raining or snowing."  (You check out the radar layer to see what’s covered if guesswork isn’t your thing.)

Zoom in far enough, and you’ll be able to see something like the image below, which was captured/generated around the time Hurricane Alex was passing into Texas.



Travelers and people who are weighing a move – along with folks who just enjoy interesting graphics – are sure to appreciate this information.

Maybe only weathermen will object to the development, since Google Earth is starting to represent a pretty decent alternative to watching the local forecast.

Google Escher Effect – Paris, France
Stitching together satellite pix and aero pics of cities can result in situations like this where the different aerial vantage points result in buildings’ pictures being taken at different angles. Once stitched together, the taller buildings at the edges of each of the pictures appear to be leaning toward or away from one another at pronounced angles.



Graffiti in Google Maps
Site of an extinct volcano crater, the Cerro Prieto, located near Mexicali in Baja California (Mexico). Apparently, a lot of visitors to the site have decorated it with their graffiti, drawn huge enough to be seen from high above. The graffiti appears to have been drawn with the intention to be seen by people looking down into the crater from the eastern rim of the crater. Here’s a closeup shot of it, taken from the ground.

Yum! Brands Inc created the logo near Rachel, Nevada, and claimed it’s the first ad that can be seen from space. The Palm Islands of Dubai
The Palm Islands are artificial islands in Dubai, United Arab Emirates on which major commercial and residential infrastructure will be constructed. They are being constructed by Nakheel Properties, a property developer in the United Arab Emirates, who hired Belgian and Dutch dredging and marine contractor Jan De Nul and Van Oord, some of the world’s specialists in land reclamation. The islands are the Palm Jumeirah, the Palm Jebel Ali and the Palm Deira.

Giants have a hard time getting clean. I mean, baths aren’t usually built big enough to fit your average giant, right? Which is the only sensible explanation as to why there’s a giant sitting in the Guadalquivir river in Córdoba, Spain.



Google Maps Oddity
This is a very strange picture from Google Maps satellite picture of downtown Dallas. The rounded top building in the upper middle is the JPMorgan Chase Tower. Next to it is the tall rectangular 2100 Ross Avenue building (dead center). Catty-cornered from those two on the left side is the pointy-topped Trammell Crow Center which appears to be leaning at a sharp angle compared with the other buildings.

This represents a quick turnaround on Google’s part, considering that Google Earth 5.2 was just launched yesterday.  The search giant didn’t cut any corners, though, as Peter Birch, a product manager, was sure to explain.

"With our latest release, we now have native support for the iPad, which means that you get to see the world in beautiful full-resolution imagery," Birch wrote this afternoon on the LatLong Blog.  "There is a custom toolbar at the top, and you can click on individual icons to open ‘balloons’ without having to navigate away from the 3D view."



Furthermore, "Along with Panoramio photos, Wikipedia articles, and Google Places, you can also view roads rendered directly on the terrain.  Select any of these layers from the ‘Layers’ menu in the toolbar."

Google Earth for iPad is of course free, too, so there’s little reason for iPad owners to not give the new software a whirl.

• Swipe with two fingers to adjust your view to see mountainous terrain
• Show the Panoramio layer and browse the millions of geo-located photos from around the world
• View geo-located Wikipedia articles
• Use the Location feature to fly to your current location
• Search for cities, places, and business around the globe with Google Local Search

At times its almost like getting a small present in the morning. And this morning in particular was one of those times. The app update that I am referring to is Google Earth.



Of course, this is good news for me as I always loved the Google Earth app. In fact, when Google first made it available in the App Store I loaded it up and it remained on my iPhone for almost the entire time I owned it. I then picked up an iPad when the 3G was released and unfortunately the app was not iPad-friendly.

Well, good news to me — that Google Earth app update finally arrived this morning in the form of version 3.0. The changes in this version are short, yet sweet, and include perks for the iPhone 3GS in addition to the iPad.

• Native support for iPad, including full resolution imagery and an iPad-specific look and feel
• Road layer added for iPad and iPhone 3GS

And while the “what’s new” section in the App Store is really just a bunch of text and could be overdramatic — let me tell you this — the Google Earth app is pretty spectacular on the iPad. Granted that is just my personal opinion, but given that I have already wasted a little over 30 minutes of supposed work time playing around, I think its safe to say that I was impressed.

That said, I am sure the iPhone 3GS users will also be appreciative of the road layer addition.

Otherwise, the Google Earth app for the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch comes in at 12.8MB and remains a free download.

Google has just updated its Google Earth iPhone app to work with the iPad. The free app brings the desktop Google Earth experience to Apple’s latest device.

In addition to offering native iPad support, Google Earth 3.0 also adds a road layer for the iPad and the iPhone 3GS. Testing the app on our 3G iPad, we found that the built-in GPS unit worked quite well when determining our exact location, and that the optional tilt function was great for controlling the axis of the globe to pinpoint location and find out additional information.

If you’ve never used Google Earth before, think of it like a giant scalable world map that has the added benefit of not only Street View and terrain indicators, but also pulls in information from Wikipedia, photos added by other users, and the locations of businesses and Google Places.

Our only real complaint is that we got an “Out of Memory” message a few times while testing the app. This is the first time we’ve seen this message in more than two months of frequent iPad usage, and while we imagine it’s because the constant redrawing of satellite and Street View imagery is taxing on the iPad’s available memory, this is still something we hope Google can address in a future update.

Toshiba is showing off a novel user input case for its flexible LCD screen: you can physically bend the screen to zoom in or out in Google Earth. Shown off at the Society for Information Display 2010 Conference, the bend sensor in the display changes resistance values as the screen is flexed.

The 8.4-inch LCD panel is only 0.1 mm thick and displays at an SVGA resolution of 800 x 600 pixels. Custom software from Toshiba handles the translation between changes in the bend sensor’s resistance values and the level of zoom in the aerial Google Earth display.

As the massively popular app has matured, so has its features and capabilities. Yesterday Google announced and released Earth view within Google Maps, a 3D look at Earth and a growing list of cities.

You’ll find some screenshots of some neat 3D views you can find in Earth view after the jump.

Overview

You won’t get the full power of Google Earth in Earth view but you’ll now be able to view the Earth in 3D, along with many cities’ buildings and features. This is a perfect example of the closing gap between browser capabilities and desktop applications.



Earth View within Google Maps

When you first try to load Earth view, you’ll likely need to install the Google Earth plugin first (unless you’ve already done so), which was released to developers back in 2008.

I have to say that I’m really impressed with the performance of Earth view within a browser. It is surprisingly smooth and fast, easy to navigate around, almost as if I was running the Google Earth software. Not quite, but close enough.

Hold shift while clicking and dragging your mouse to quickly rotate the viewing angle and map.

Neat 3D Views

As you start exploring, you’ll find lots of neat 3D views and hidden “treasures” along the way. While these may have been available in Google Earth, you can now explore them without downloading the Google Earth software, from the comfort of your browser.

Something I thought was rather neat, was water is actually animated, displaying more like live water than just an image. Very neat!

Las Vegas

The first place I explored was my current home town, Las Vegas, Nevada. Downtown is filled with massive hotels and entertaining structures but I was a little surprised to see an advertisement on the Luxor (the Pyramid) for Absolut, an alcoholic beverage. It sounds like a scene straight out of Jurassic Park: Today a nine-year-old’s trip-and-fall accident in South Africa has helped scientists discover a new hominid species that lived two million years ago. What’s even more intriguing is how Google Earth technology contributed to the significant fossil find.

The New York Times reports that the child in question, Matthew Berger, “dashed after his dog Tau into the high grass … tripped over a log and stumbled onto a major archeological discovery.” Berger’s initial finding — the remains of an ancient boy — was passed along to his father, which led to the discovery of three additional individuals. The remains have been classified as Australopithecus sediba, a new species of early man that’s likely a descendant of Australopithecus africanus.

So how does Google fit into the mix? Apparently the archaeological team exploring South Africa — led by Dr. Berger — turned to Google Earth to map identified caves and fossil deposits and to discover new caves via satellite imagery.

The crux of Google’s role in the unearthing can be gleaned from the following excerpt:

“With the help of the navigation facility and high-resolution satellite imagery in Google Earth, Professor Berger went on to find almost 500 previously unidentified caves and fossil sites, even though the area is one of the most explored in Africa. One of these fossil sites yielded the remarkable discovery of a new species, Australopithecus sediba. This species was an upright walker that shared many physical traits with the earliest known species of the genus homo — and its introduction into the fossil record might answer some key questions about our earliest ancestry in Africa.”

As we start to learn more about this new hominid species and its implications, we can’t help being fascinated by the entire story; it has blockbuster written all over it.

Google calls it the fastest mobile version of Google Earth yet.

Along with the release, comes the Roads layer, which has been popular on the desktop version of Google Earth. The layer is meant to give users a better sense of where they are, with road labels drawn on top of satellite imagery.



"As with other versions of Google Earth, you can also browse photos, places, and local businesses, whether it is in your local community or on the far side of the globe," says Product Manager Peter Birch. "Click on an icon to see photos, videos, and read about prominent places in the world. You can easily customize your version of Google Earth to display the layers that most interest you."

Google Earth for Android also takes advantage of voice recognition that "responds to your every command," according to Google. "With Google Earth for Android, we have brought together the convenience of Google Search by voice with the power of Google Local Search to make it easier than ever to navigate the globe and find whatever you are looking for," says Birch.

Google Earth will be available in the Android Market for devices that have Android 2.1 or higher. As older Android devices get upgraded to 2.1, they will be able to get it.

Google allows you to take a virtual tour of the Olympics in 3D. They recently released updates in Google Earth’s 3D Buildings layer, which showcase Olympic venues (54 buildings). Models range from downtown event centers to ski lifts and spectator bleachers. The Official site for the Olympics uses the models itself.

Vectoral Elevation has "an interactive artwork" that allows users to direct light beams and transform Vancouver’s skyline until the end of the month using a custom interface built on Google Earth and Map APIs. It lets users design big light sculptures by directing 20 robotic searchlights located around English Bay.

Bing

Microsoft launched a new Bing Maps application that pulls photos from Flickr, associates them with Bing Maps Streetside photos, and overlays them stretching the photo to form fit where in the world it belongs. The app is currently available in Vancouver (among several other places).

Bing actually has a Winter Olympics-specific Maps app as well. "In coordination with NBCOlympics.com, get up to the minute information about the 2010 Winter Olympics in everything from venues to news," says Bing’s Chris Pendleton. "Click the Venues bar on the left to see the different venues where the events are taking place. Click the Medal Count bar to see every country mapped out with the number of bronze, silver and gold medals awarded to the respective country. Click the Winter Games News and Blogs to get the latest information about the Winter Olympic Games from news sources and bloggers on site. Finally, check out the Winter Games Tweets which filters information from our Twitter Maps application specific to the Olympics." Bing talks about more Vancouver apps that feature Bing Maps here.



Bing is also giving its home page some Olympics love. It will be updating it with various photos from the events. "And while we’ll show some winners, this won’t be the standard parade of medalists," says Bing’s Stephanie Horstmanshof. "We’re out to show the great moments from the games: the alpine skier from Ghana, the debut of Ski Cross as an Olympic event, anything to do with curling—all with the stunning imagery that you’ve come to expect on the Bing homepage."

Yahoo/Flickr

Yahoo has a games-dedicated site, as well as a new Olympic mobile site at m.yahoo.com/olympics. This will provide coverage with live results, upcoming events, medal counts, photos, news, commentary, etc.

Yahoo also has a Yahoo Sports Olympics Coverage app for My Yahoo, that gives you more such information.

On Yahoo’s Flickr, the IOC, the official governing body of the Olympics, has set up their official Olympic photo group for people to share their photos of the events and of Vancouver.



Facebook

The IOC also has an official Olympic Games Page on Facebook. "Through the page, you can stay updated on activities and events at the Games, while sharing your own stories about what the Olympics mean to you," says Alex Huot, head of social media for the IOC. "You’ll even be able to stay updated on future games even after this year’s Winter Olympics end."

Alex also encourages people to use Facebook to become a fan of athletes and Olympics teams, play the Vancouver 2010 Official Minigame, and share photos.

Twitter

Twitter has a list of verified athletes from the Olympics who will be tweeting. Fans will of course be tweeting non-stop about things that happen at the Olympics throughout the events.

For many ‘designers’ today, the ‘art of typography’ consists of picking a typeface – and, maybe if the audience is lucky, experimenting with leading, tracking, and kerning.
That’s not to say that there aren’t many extremely talented designers working with type today. Typography is, of course, an intricate art-form.

As computers continue to increase in power, typographers working digitally have been experimenting with textures, lighting, and more to create awesome effects including a whole movement of 3d style work.
But what about real-3d? Technical advances often spur a strong backlash, and typographers are no exception.

The designers below have literally taken their type off the page using materials including hair, cigarretes, toothpaste, underwear, and condoms to create beautiful 3d typographic works.
From Vladimir Zivkovic’s Google Earth project, to Arjan Benning’s pinched skin alphabet, these designers are working with anything and everything to push the envelope.

Try to download Google Pack in Czech, French, German, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, or Spanish, and you’ll see Avast’s logo among symbols for Chrome, Google Earth, Picasa, and a handful of other things.  This endorsement should help Avast Free Antivirus Version 5 find its way onto more than a few new computers.



Of course, the odd thing is that Spyware Doctor with Anti-Virus, and not Avast’s product, is still recommended to anyone who takes a look at Google Pack in English.  Whether this is because the change is experimental or Google’s been caught mid-rollout is hard to say.

Or perhaps Google’s just really trying to split hairs with regards to what security software is most effective in different markets.

It’s likely that the adjustment represents some form of payback, though.  Alex Chitu, who wrote about it, also noted, "In December, Avast’s blog announced that the software will offer users the option to install Google Chrome."

In the wake of the devastating Haiti earthquake, the Red Cross has already been able to raise $5 million for relief through $10 donations via text message, while Google has stepped up to the plate with a $1 million donation of its own.

But lots of other tech and Internet outfits are quickly moving to get involved too, both with their wallets and on-the-fly updates to their services that go towards helping the cause. Here’s a look at a number of initiatives that have come across our radar — please add links to others in the comments.

Zynga: The social gaming company has added virtual goods to its games – including Farmville – that go towards Haiti relief. So far, the effort has raised $1.2 million according to Social Times.

Skype: The VoIP service has sent $2 vouchers to all of its customers in Haiti, allowing them to make up to one hour worth of calls to US.

Salesforce: The CRM software provider has set up a donation matching program – i.e. – for every $1 you donate to Red Cross or World Vision, Salesforce will also give $1, up to $200,000 total.

T-Mobile: According to CNET, the carrier has dropped all charges for calls and texts to Haiti through the end of the month. Other carriers are waving charges for the donation text message that has been so successful for the Red Cross.

MyYearbook: The social network is allowing members to donate their virtual currency to the Haiti Relief Fund. So far, members have pledged $3.5 billion in “LunchMoney.” We’ve followed up with the company to see how much real world money that equals.

GoDaddy: The domain registrar has donated $500,000 to relief efforts.

Facebook: The company is leveraging its “Disaster Relief on Facebook” Page to spotlight ways that members can get involved. Facebook’s Randi Zuckerberg blogged about the effort earlier today.

Google is responding to the disastrous earthquake in Haiti with a $1 million donation that will go to organizations “on the ground that are rescuing those still trapped and providing clean water, food, medical care, shelter and support to those affected.”

The generous donation was announced this morning on Google’s blog. It’s being made in conjunction with the search giant’s continued efforts to encourage and support your donations to organizations. As we reported this morning, Google is also providing a satellite view of the damage in Haiti using Google Earth. It’s also using YouTube as a means to collect and share video from Haiti and expand the outreach.

Google’s efforts, combined with text message donations to the Red Cross — which now total more that $3 million — show the power of social media to inspire action, and the significance of individuals and companies pulling together to support the hundreds of thousands of people in need in Haiti.

You can now get a satellite’s-eye view of the devastation in Haiti with Google Earth. Google worked with satellite imaging company GeoEye to put together a map layer file that provides up-close views of the wreckage of government buildings and more in the Haitian capital city of Port-au-Prince.

Download the file to check it out. It’s in KML format, and it should load in Google Earth automatically if you have that desktop app installed. Alternatively, you can just pull it up in the web-based Google Maps app.



If you switch the layer on and off for some before-and-after perspective, you’ll see just how serious the damage is — as if the pictures circulating on Twitter and other places on the Internet weren’t harrowing enough already. Here’s an embed with the data to make things even easier.

You can help relief workers, orphanages and other critical services in Haiti by donating on the web. We’ve put together a list of places you can go online to do that. You can even donate $10 by texting “HAITI” to 90999; the Red Cross has collected more than $3 million that way already.

Want to know Santa’s whereabouts this Christmas Eve? Well, Google has you covered. The company has been helping NORAD track the man in red since 2004 — the bi-national U.S.-Canadian military organization had been tackling the task all on its lonesome since 1955, when a Sears and Roebuck magazine ad accidentally instructed readers to call NORAD instead of the real hotline.

Well, technology has come a long way since 1955 — and since last year, for that matter — making it easier for even the most computer-challenged wassailers to log in and watch Mr. Claus navigate his way from the North Pole.


In the past, Google’s Santa-tracking service has included “Santa-cam” videos, SketchUp models of the big guy’s sleigh and North Pole digs and a feed of Santa’s movements from NORAD headquarters. And while there are several ways to keep up with Saint Nick, Google’s has been pretty popular over the last five years.

Last year, more than eight million people made use of the software, and Google’s hoping for an even bigger turnout tomorrow night. This year the company has added a Google Earth plug-in that works on the NORAD site to create a whole world right in your browser. Moreover, Santa’s hip to all the new trends: You’ll be able to follow him on your mobile device, via Twitter and by using real-time search.

With this many tools at your disposal, Google’s made it pretty easy to keep up with Santa’s every move starting at 2 a.m. ET on the 24th. Now all you have to do is continue being “nice” for 48 more hours. Good luck with that.

Yes, plenty of cars have built-in GPS navigation. But up until now, no car had Google Earth integrated, and now Audi has remedied that with their new luxury car, the Audi A8.

Snugged right into the LCD screen in the car, the Google Earth application will let lucky owners look at 3D satellite imagery, terrain information, and even additional info layers such as Wikipedia articles or Panoramio images related to a certain location.

A8’s system will also feature Google Maps and Local Search, plus the ability to link it all with your desktop computer. To save time, you can simply search for an address on your computer and send it to the car; when you start driving, the car will know where to go.



However, if you’re not familiar with German manufacturer’s luxury cars, lets just say that only those with the deepest pockets will be buying one. The rest of us will have to make do with an iPhone stand and the Google Earth mobile app.

The progress should be evident right from the beginning.  A post on the LatLong Blog states, "We know that waiting for a program to start-up can be really frustrating, so we improved our start-up time by 25%."

Tweaks in terms of memory utilization and shaders from that point on have also been made.  All in all, the post promises, "we can show more buildings, layers, and user content," and you’ll get "[a] faster, smoother experience when you’re flying around the globe."

Since issues pertaining to speed can definitely be a stumbling block to adoption, version 5.1 of Google Earth could succeed at attracting new users.  It might even be well positioned to make its debut in a lot of schools, if the old clunkers in computer labs weren’t capable of running it before.

Regardless, this represents a nice treat for existing Google Earth fans.  Have fun exploring the world at a faster pace.

"We’ve also made some useful improvements to the product, including: the option of a Google Earth-view when you’re choosing a location to model, the ability to save models as drafts before submitting them for review, and a new tool for tracing buildings," the company says.

Original Article: Google has launched a new tool for creating buildings for Google Earth, called Google Building Maker. The company thinks of this tool as a cross between Google Maps and a "gigantic bin of building blocks."

Users can use the tool to pick a building and construct a model of it using aerial photos and simple 3D shapes, provided by Google. Google will then take your model and add it to the 3D Buildings layer in Google Earth if they think it looks right and there isn’t already a better one for the same building. Google says you can make a whole building in just a few minutes.

Currently, users can choose to make buildings in one of nearly 50 cities. "We’ll keep adding more cities, but don’t feel left out if we don’t have your hometown yet — modeling in a place you’ve never been is a fantastic way to discover more about it," says Google. "Teachers might find that Building Maker is a great way to get students interested in geography. Armchair tourists can not only visit an unfamiliar city; they can engage with it. It’s amazing what you learn when you look at something really closely."

Google Building Maker runs completely in the web browser, and is supported by Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Internet Explorer, etc. Users have to sign in to a Google account to use it. It’s available in 14 languages.

Models reside in the Google 3D Warehouse. Users can use Google SketchUp to edit or modify anything they make with Building Maker. Google says to make sure you have the latest version of Google Earth installed on your computer, and that if you’re using a Mac, you’ll need to download the Google Earth plug-in directly.

A post on the LatLong Blog announced, "We’ve added some exciting new features, including the ability to view maps that you create on your desktop computer right from your iPhone, explore the app in new languages, and improved icon selection and performance."

Then the other big difference is that this release of Google Earth for iPhone is available in 13 new languages (for a total of 31).  Impressive.

Still, this development raises an interesting question: Where’s Google Earth for Android?  Google Earth for iPhone was first released over a year ago, and for Google to upgrade it prior to acknowledging its own mobile operating system seems odd.  Especially since there is (and has been) a demand.

Ah, well.  The official Google post concluded, "We hope you enjoy our latest release.  Please note that the app will be rolling out around the world over the next twenty-four hours – if you don’t see it immediately, be sure to check back soon.  You can download Google Earth for iPhone here."
