Excerpt from Part One

Theme designers and plugin developers have been pushing the boundaries of what WordPress can do for some time. This has accelerated since the introduction of Custom Post Types into the WordPress core as it allows developers to use WordPress in a lot of weird and wonderful ways.

Today we will begin showing you examples of themes and plugins that let you use WordPress in ways you may have never thought possible.

As we mentioned last week, in this installment we will show you how to extend the possibilities of your WP site to make it a Wiki, an Arcade, a Job Board, a Membership based site, a Review site, or just a Q&A site. Now let’s get at it.

Wiki

Due to the sheer amount of content they contain, Wikis are a good way of making money online (take Star Trek fan wiki Memory Alpha for example). They are also a useful addition to blogs and websites as it allows readers to contribute to the site. As you would expect from a CMS, WordPress handles Wikis easily.

• Clean design (though perhaps a little dated).

• Hasn’t been updated for years so new WordPress features aren’t built into this theme.

• Support for any type of game type.

Overview

Throughout the course of these two articles we have shown you how flexible the WordPress is and how it can be used for a variety of purposes. The products that have been listed in this article can be split into two categories: plugins that integrate with your existing WordPress powered website to add extra functionality to an area of your site and themes or plugins that use WordPress to completely change how WordPress is used (e.g. a discussion forum).

When you are using a product that uses WordPress to power the main areas of your website, you need to consider the stand alone scripts that are available. For example, The G Forums uses the WordPress platform to create a discussion forum. It achieves this through custom theme templates therefore it couldn’t be integrated into an existing WordPress website. The script retails for $29 and has very basic features therefore, in my opinion, you would be better off using a PHP bulletin board such as phpBB or Simple Machines instead. If however you wanted to integrate a forum into your existing website, a plugin such as bbPress may be better than phpBB or Simple Machines.

Another factor to consider is plugins. The official WordPress plugin directory has over 15,000 plugins. The number of add ons available for stand alone scripts is sometimes poor therefore if you need additional functionality on your website, a WordPress product is a good choice (e.g. one click installs of forums, sitemaps, member areas etc).

Today we release Spectacular, a free WordPress theme that aims to provide a warm and pleasurable atmosphere for personal musings and ramblings. The theme comes in two flavors: HTML 4.01 and HTML5. Also, both German and English versions of the theme are included in the download package. The theme is cross-browser compatible and supports Opera, Safari, Chrome, IE7+, and FF. Support for IE6 is not available, though the theme works in IE6, too.

The theme was commissioned by Smashing Magazine and designed by Maleika Esther Attawel exclusively for Smashing Magazine. As usual, the theme is absolutely free to use in private and commerical projects.

Newpaper/Magazine Style:

The tell-tale sign of this type of blog theme is the “Featured” article section. You all know what a regular blog looks like. Just take a look at PVMGarage as an example. Articles come one after the other in reverse chronological order.

Now I understand why it makes sense for some sites to adopt this type of layout. I think it works well for larger sites that have a lot of news across multiple categories each day. This makes it easy for the reader to find the good stuff (“Featured”) as well as the subjects they are mostly interested in. CNN.com or ESPN.com are good examples. However, for a niche blog where a reader is likely interested in most of the published articles, I think this style layout is overkill. Keep it simple. When you are designing a theme for a niche blog, make it easy for the reader to know what the latest unread articles are. Use the standard reverse chronological format.

“Most theme developers create a lot of magazine and portfolio themes for WordPress, however the education niche is mostly ignored. We decided to do something about it, and create a flexible and versatile free theme that can be easily customized and branded for any university/academy or non-profit organization. Of course, the theme can be used in other niches as well, no restrictions or whatsoever. After reviewing a ton of web-sites of educational institutions, our eyes fell on the web-site of Massey University of New Zealand. With a rather general layout and color palette, we decided to make the navigation and all styling pure-CSS, without any gradients, so that the theme can be customized much faster and easier.”

The theme is based on the design ideas of Jan Tschichold, Josef Müller-Brockmann, Dieter Rams, and other modernists. It’s hard to believe that a year has passed since our last WordPress theme collection, but there you have it — the time has come again. Once a year we feature the most useful and interesting WordPress-themes that we are collecting over months and present them in a nice quick overview. The collections from 2007, 2008 and last year are still useful, but some of the themes are outdated or updated now.

Looking back over these previous theme articles, you can clearly see how and why WordPress has rapidly matured into the CMS powerhouse it is today. With all of the features that have been added and improvements made with every new WordPress version and with its ever-increasing popularity among the design and development community, the quality of free themes is evident. Developers are continually pushing WordPress’ boundaries, giving us today’s outstanding free theme collection.

Today, we present a fresh collection of useful WordPress themes. Please notice that some themes are a bit older, but they are included because we haven’t featured them last time. This round-up picks up where we left off last year: most themes below were released between June 2009 and August 2010. Cumulus is a very clean and calm portfolio theme. It contains a large block for featured projects and images and a nifty blog posts navigation in the sidebar.

Free wordpress theme in modern-minimalist style. Imbalance is a very user friendly, jQuery powered theme which looks really well under any browser and OS. Inspiration Behind The Design

The basic idea behind this theme first comes in mind when we looked around and saw that there are only very few good news themes available over web for WordPress platform and most of them are premium or paid once. So, we wanted to create something useful and make it available to share with design community for FREE. That is one of few strong reasons which inspired us to design this theme. Therefore, we sit together and draw the rough idea on paper. When the things had finished up with designing part the next question which comes in our mind is the conversion of design. The aim was to design an universal WordPress news theme that’s focused on content and images, with an invisible, yet typical newspaper design.

News themes are often very hard to customize and difficult to handle for a single person but this time we want to design this theme with various admin options and widgets to make your life simple. There really are very few limits to what WordPress can handle, so we’ve decided to built in a lot of custom features and some admin options to give people a little flexibility in handling, and give them a feel that how some small functionality tweaks can make a huge difference to the overall experience of browsing a news theme/blog. This time we’ve decided to not to code this theme by our own so we’ve stumbled upon many designers around and finally contacted RapidxHTML for the conversion part and i must say we’re surprised with their designing skills and we had fulfilled with all our expectations and even more.

After running few successful tests and plugin optimization we’ve finally end up with current theme. Hope you all going to like it.

Custom Post Layout Options

Through our admin options, you can easily select whether to display all large full width posts (as you see in the demo) or small half page width posts.  You can even mix these layouts up and do “X” amount of large, and “X” amount of small posts!  You’re in control of how your posts are displayed to your readers.

Custom Author Box and Post Excerpt Captions

Out of the box, SketchPad will create an “Author Box” in every one of your blog posts.  This author box will use the authors email Gravatar as the image, use the author’s name as a link to their posts, and use the “BIO” information that an author can fill out in their WordPress profile page.  Another neat feature is the custom excerpt caption.  This area is directly beside the main posts thumbnail and will first display the “excerpt” field ( you have to fill the excerpt field out whilst creating a new post ), if no excerpt variable exists, it takes the first 150 characters from your content to display.  This is a great way to give visitors a quick summary on the article and the author, capturing their interest and increasing reader loyalty.

2. Create “About Me” page – let people know the real you.  Tell us some unique things about you.

3.  Fix broken links - Go to this site and verify any broken links to fix; do it yourself or hire someone.

4. Sell it – Sell your blog to someone who wants it, that’s a great way to better your blog.

5. Add Social Profiles - If you don’t have Twitter or Facebook then its time you should; do it for the blog.  When you do, use some social media plugins to connect with your readers.

6. Switch to a Premium theme - If your using a free WordPress theme, maybe it’s time to upgrade to a premium theme.

7. Give Something Away For Free – People love free stuff, why not give them something of value for free!  Maybe an ebook??

8. Guest Post – guest post on another, more popular blog in your niche.  This is a great way to build traffic and network.

9. Q & A – depending on your traffic, having a question and answer session is a nice way of engaging with your visitors.

10. Check Spelling - We are all human, everyone makes mistakes.  Nice little cliche, try your best to spell everything right; nothing worse than multiple typos on a post or page.

11. Ease up on the ads – I don’t want something popping up every time I hover over a word.  Don’t let your content drowned in ads.

12.  Create a “recommend” page  – Why not have a page for your recommended products that you use.  I have one where I swear by anything I recommend.

13. Stop checking stats - instead write awesome content.  This rule applies to new blogs especially, it’s very discouraging to only see 4 visits.  Content and interaction will bring in plenty of traffic.

14. Get your own domain – If you are on wordpress.com or blogger.com, it’s time to get your own domain to look more professional and be brandable.

15. Post Consistently – Nothing is worse than visiting a site and viewing their last post and it’s from 3 months ago!  Whether you post daily or weekly, just be consistent.

16. Comment on other blogs - Interaction is key.  Go around to other blogs and comment on their post.  Make sure you link back to your site.

17. Don’t comment on other blogs - if you quickly write “nice artcle.”  Be more in depth so it doesn’t look like spam.

18. Have a voice – don’t sound like a robot in your writing.  Just be you.

19.  Use timestamp – When you feel inspired and you can bang out several articles then you should.  Schedule them to publish on your regular schedule.

20. Don’t quit over money - Don’t quit or get discouraged if you blog isn’t generating the money you hoped for.  It takes time to become successful.

21. Be patient – Along the lines of the above, take one day at a time.  Most successful blogs don”t become a success in a day, week or 3 months; it takes many months/years to be a success.

22. Make a top list - This is popular in the design community, a top list showcases the best of the best in a particular topic.  It’s an easy read and entertaining.

23. Change your sidebar - If you think your sidebar is boring, add some widgets like popular posts.

24. Run a contest - Give something away for commenting, subscribing or retweeting.

25. Ask – ask your readers, friends, family what they would like to see change on your site.

26. Step Away – from the computer and grab a coffee or go for a walk.  Its not healthy, mentally or physically, to be sitting in front of a couple for hours.

27. Learn Something New – and write a blog post about it.

28. Stop reading other blogs - instead build online relationships and focus on your site.

29. Add a Sitemap - A great way for search engines to recognize your pages.  If you are using WordPress there are many plugins that will organize this for you.

30.  Redesign logo - a logo should say something about your  site. Do it yourself or pay someone if you don’t have web graphic experience.

31. Be done for the day - Sometimes the best thing to do is stop tweaking and step away from your site.

32. Submit to directories - This is a good way for search engines like Google and Yahoo to recognize your site.

33. Fix permalinks – visit this post to do so.

34. Create mailing list - I don’t have one ( I should), but most pro-bloggers swear by having a mailing list you increase readership and revenue.

35.  Fix your workspace – In order to be more productive clean up your workspace.

36.  Create a favicon - You know the little icon up top?  Yeah, you should have one to look more professional.

37. Eat Healthy – In order to be on top of your game today you need to eat right! Don’t eat foods that will leave you sluggish.  Instead of a McDonalds 1/3lb burger, grab a piece of fruit.

38. Spend Money - buy an ad spot to increase traffic.

39. Link to others - link out to some articles that you find interesting

40. Backup – it’s important to have a scheduled backup for you files.

41. Interview Someone – Another great way to reach out to someone is to interview them with some quality questions.  Shoot an email over to a person in your niche, most would be glad to answer a few questions.

42. Check in on your competition – You should know who your competing with and every once in a while you should keep tabs on what they are doing.

43. Turn the TV off - You can get alot done when you don’t have any distractions.  Instead of watching Seinfeld, make a quality post for you blog.

44. Retweet – this is similar to an outgoing link only you are using your Twitter profile to shout out an article

45. Visit with someone – have some real interaction with a friend or client, bounce some ideas off of eachother.  This will give you more to write about when you sit down to write a post.

46.  Take a shower – its weird but I do my best thinking in the shower so this is a personal suggest for you.

47. Expand - expand your blog with a possible sister site.  For example, the Envato network has PSDTuts, Nettuts and so on.

48.  Share personal happenings – maybe you are a recent Dad, share it with us!

49.  Write the old fashioned way – grab a pen and paper and write a post (journal entry).  Sometimes its nice to write without hitting keys!

50. Do you!  – It’s your blog, you don’t have to listen to anyone!  You can ignore these tips if  you want.  The most important thing is to be yourself.
