All the way back in January, we speculated that Apple would introduce its then recently acquired facial recognition technology into the upcoming iPhone 5. Now, it seems that prediction has come true – and not just for the iPhone 5, but for any iPhone capable of upgrading to the new mobile operating system iOS 5.

Sponsor

Developers to Get Access to Facial Detection Tools

The Apple-tracking site 9to5Mac first discovered the new facial detection tools on Apple’s Developer website. According to the blog post, the technology will not be implemented in an Apple-provided mobile application, like its Photo Gallery, for example, but will be offered to mobile developers for use in third-party applications sold in the iTunes App Store.

Specifically, Apple is introducing 5 new iOS 5 APIs (application programming interfaces), which will allow developers to determine things like where a person’s eyes, nose and mouth are located – all things that enable facial detection and facial recognition.

The Polar Rose Connection

The technology that makes this possible comes from a 2010 acquisition of a Swedish company called Polar Rose, which previously designed consumer-facing services that enabled you to automatically tag your Facebook and Flickr photos with your friends’ names. While it’s beyond exciting to think about how this technology can be implemented in the future by Apple’s large developer community, it’s odd to think that Apple itself wouldn’t also include some interesting facial recognition features of its own into its mobile operating system.

For example, 9to5Mac notes that face detection tools are already available on the Mac, so why wouldn’t Apple also provide something similar for your iPhone (or iPod Touch, or iPad) photos? Those name tags could then be synced either manually over USB or via Apple’s new iCloud service to your Mac, where they would be recognized by Apple’s photo management software.

Why Nothing from Apple Itself?

Could it be that Apple is holding back on implementing facial recognition out of fear of a backlash, similar to what Facebook is experiencing now? Facebook added facial recognition for U.S. users last year, and to the world last month, in order to help suggest tags for the faces present in photos users uploaded to the service. But thanks to an overly paranoid user base (probably due to Facebook’s continual mismanagement of user privacy amid an array of confusing settings), privacy advocates insisted on improved opt-out options for this new feature.

Google, too, reportedly has facial recognition technology in development which allows mobile phones to recognize the people seen within the camera’s lens. Supposedly, Google has held back on releasing this technology due to privacy concerns.

If we know Apple, it will let other companies take the brunt of abuse for implementing these “new-fangled” innovations, wait until consumers are more comfortable with the technology, then release an update that radically improves on the overall user experience through ease-of-use and good design.

In the meantime, wouldn’t it be nice to see a simple facial detection device unlock feature like this jailbreak app (below) come to the next iPhone? That wouldn’t be too invasive, we think. What do you think, Apple?

Google has acquired a seven-year-old company that develops facial-recognition technology for images and video, though the Web-search giant didn’t say what it plans to do with it.

The company, called Pittsburgh Pattern Recognition, or PittPatt, is run by three “image analysis” and “pattern recognition” specialists with PhD’s from Carnegie Mellon University, according to its site. Terms of the deal weren’t disclosed.

A statement on PittPatt’s site said on Friday that “computer vision technology is already at the core of many existing products” at Google, including Image Search, YouTube and Picasa, “so it’s a natural fit to join Google and bring the benefits of our research and technology to a wider audience. We will continue to tap the potential of computer vision in applications that range from simple photo organization to complex video and mobile applications.”

A Google spokesman said PittPatt developed “innovative technology” in the area of computer vision and that its research “can benefit our users in many ways,” without elaborating.

Regarding face recognition, the spokesman said, “We’ve said that we won’t add face recognition to our apps or product features unless we have strong privacy protections in place, and that’s still the case.”

Google has said it built facial recognition technology for smartphones into a product known as Google Goggles, but withheld it. “As far as I know, it’s the only technology that Google built and after looking at it, we decided to stop,” said Google Chairman Eric Schmidt last month at a conference. “People could use this stuff in a very, very bad way as well as in a good way.”

During its annual developer conference in May, Google showed off something called “Virtual Camera Operator,” which uses computer-vision technology to stabilize mobile video chats by following a person’s head movements and to determine who is speaking during a multi-person video conference so that the camera would automatically focus on the speaker.

It also recently launched Google+, a social network that lets people share and store photos, among other things. Rival Facebook has face-recognition technology to identify people in photos, which has raised concerns from privacy advocates. The technology, first introduced last year, was designed to help Facebook users easily identify and mark, or “tag,” friends in photos as they upload them to the social-networking site.

“If for any reason someone doesn’t want their name to be suggested” for tagging, “they can disable the feature in their Privacy Settings,” Facebook has said.

PittPatt’s software “accurately counts the number of people viewed by a video camera” and “it can automatically generate reports measuring the presence and movement of people over extended periods of time,” according to a cached version of its website.

Some of the “practical applications” of the technology include measuring “the effectiveness of digital signage, advertising, kiosks and narrowcasting”; “customer traffic flow,” or gathering “insight into customer behavior and shopping patterns; “security-related matters” such as being able to send alerts when the PittPatt software detects a face that isn’t in its database.

PittPatt offered a tool for people to “integrate face finding and tracking into your own product,” and in 2007 it partnered with General Electric to develop an “intelligent security camera system,” the site said. The GE system “will obtain high resolution facial imagery using a motorized pan-tilt-zoom camera that will track and zoom in on faces that enter the field of view,” according to the site.

Google has just acquired facial recognition software company PittPatt (Pittsburgh Pattern Recognition), according to an announcement on the startup’s site.

PittPatt, a project spawned from Carnegie Mellon University, develops a facial recognition technology that can match people across photos, videos, and more. The company has created a number of algorithms in face detection, face tracking and face recognition. PittPatt’s face detection and tracking SDK locates human faces in photographs and tracks the motion of human faces in video.

Here’s the notice PittPatt has up on its site: Joining Google is the next thrilling step in a journey that began with research at Carnegie Mellon University’s Robotics Institute in the 1990s and continued with the launching of Pittsburgh Pattern Recognition (PittPatt) in 2004. We’ve worked hard to advance the research and technology in many important ways and have seen our technology come to life in some very interesting products. At Google, computer vision technology is already at the core of many existing products (such as Image Search, YouTube, Picasa, and Goggles), so it’s a natural fit to join Google and bring the benefits of our research and technology to a wider audience. We will continue to tap the potential of computer vision in applications that range from simple photo organization to complex video and mobile applications.

Google has reportedly been exploring adding facial recognition to its products (i.e. Google Goggles) more seriously but has held back because of privacy concerns. As the company told Search Engine Land in March, Google wouldn’t put out facial recognition in a mobile app unless there were very strict privacy controls in place.

But in May, Google Chairman Eric Schmidt said the company is “unlikely to employ facial recognition programs.”

Google issued this statement confirming the acquisition:

“The Pittsburgh Pattern Recognition team has developed innovative technology in the area of pattern recognition and computer vision. We think their research and technology can benefit our users in many ways, and we look forward to working with them.”

Like voice search, this has been available on mobile for some time (via Google Goggles), but now it’s coming to the desktop.

Google explains on its Inside Search blog:

You might have an old vacation photo, but forgot the name of that beautiful beach. Typing [guy on a rocky path on a cliff with an island behind him] isn’t exactly specific enough to help find your answer. So when words aren’t as descriptive as the image, you can now search using the image itself.

To search using an image, go to images.google.com and just put your picture in the search box. There are many ways to do this. You can click the camera icon in the search box and upload a photo from your computer or paste the URL of an image from the web. You can also drag and drop pictures from webpages or your computer into the search box. To search images on the web even faster with just one click, you can download the Chrome or Firefox extensions.

Google says the feature returns the best results for images that have related content already on the web, so you’ll be more likely to get relevant results for landmarks, paintings, and things like that, as opposed to images of your family. This is pretty standard for Google Goggles already.

Google made it clear at its Inside Search event that it does not use facial recognition technology, surely thwarting any potential privacy complaints.

The feature is rolling out globally today.

If you have a bunch of tag-happy Facebook friends, you may want to read this. Facebook has been rolling out a facial recognition feature that makes it easier to tag friends in snaps, and it has introduced this feature as a default setting.

We first heard about Tag Suggestions back in December.

The feature basically means that whenever you’re offered the chance to tag groups of your friends in an album, Facebook will use its facial recognition technology to group similar faces together and automatically suggest the friend you should tag them with.

The option has been rolling out to international users over the past few months, and according to a report from Sophos, the social networking site has been making the facial recognition feature a default setting. Facebook explained the rollout in a post on Tuesday.

If you don’t want Facebook to suggest you when your friends go to tag everyone in that picture from last week’s naked mud-wrestling pool party, here’s how you disable the feature:

Go to your privacy settings.

Click “Customize settings.”

Scroll down to “Things others share.”

Find “Suggest photos of me to friends.”

Edit accordingly.

Although this is an easy fix, we can see some privacy-focused users getting peeved about the option being turned on without their knowledge. And this wouldn’t be the first time Facebook has turned on a feature without users’ consent (heck, we even wrote an entire guide to Facebook’s privacy features).

What do you think of this latest change?

Google is working on a facial recognition mobile app that would allow users to snap a picture of a friend or new acquaintance — and then access his or her Google Profile contact information, according to multiple reports.

The as-yet-unnamed app is capable of grabbing a Google Profile user’s name, email address and phone number. The technology is also capable of accessing Twitter, Facebook, Flickr or other online photos and data.

Naturally, Google has to wrestle with the privacy implications. How do you harness the power of this technology while still allowing individuals to maintain some semblance of anonymity?

Right now, Google is working on an opt-in model. Google Profile users have to elect to participate, and they must explicitly give Google permission to use their profile data and picture. If they don’t, the photo app won’t recognize them.

Googler Hartmut Neven is in charge of the company’s image-recognition applications; his company, Neven Vision, was acquired by Google in 2006. He told CNN that people are right to be wary about this kind of technology.

“In particular, women say, ‘Oh my God. Imagine this guy takes a picture of me in a bar, and then he knows my address just because somewhere on the Web there is an association of my address with my photo,’” Neven said.

“That’s a scary thought. So I think there is merit in finding a good route that makes the power of this technology available in a good way.”

The app makes use of Neven’s facial recognition technology, which is already being used in Picasa, Google’s photo-sharing application. And similar object-recognition technologies developed by Neven at his previous company are being used in Google Goggles.

Google’s balancing of high technology and human privacy has come under fire in recent months. Last fall, the company had to settle a privacy-related lawsuit when its social product, Google Buzz, shared personal data without user consent. And the company was subject to international scrutiny over Street View privacy violations; these issues came to a head when the FCC opened an investigation into the matter last November.

We’ll have to wait to see if Google can skirt privacy violations while still rolling out really interesting apps like this one. What do you think the company would have to do to ensure personal security for users of this app?

UPDATE: WebProNews has spoken to a Google spokesperson about any upcoming plans for the use of facial recognition technology. Here is their official statement:

“As we’ve said for more than a year, we will not add facial recognition to Goggles unless we have strong privacy protections in place. We’re still working on them. We have nothing to announce at this time.”

Ever get yourself involved in a conversation with an old acquaintance and suddenly realize you don’t remember their name? Awkward. Well, there might be an app for that, depending on how sly you are with snapping photos.

At least that’s a more optimistic use for the new app being developed by Google. The app would use face recognition technology to search for matches through the Google profile database, and would then be able to display a person’s name, contact information and whatever else was included in their profile. Let’s ask the more sinister question now.

Have you ever been ignored by the hottest girl at the bar and really wanted to find out where she lived so you can make a proper impression? There might be an app for that. But not yet, a Google engineering director told CNN. The most obvious problem surrounding the app is its privacy implications.

“We recognize that Google has to be extra careful when it comes to these [privacy] issues. Before the app launches, Google plans to have acceptable privacy models in place,” said Hartmut Neven to CNN.

Google and privacy concerns are words that seem to be linked together quite often as of late. Yesterday, Google announced that it had settled with the FTC over publicly released email contacts associated with the launch of Google Buzz. There has also been plenty of privacy concerns involving street-view, both here and across the pond.

Obviously, if people have to opt-in to letting their information be shared via this app, the database for photos able to be recognized will be relatively small. What if the app could comb through billions more photos online for a match? An app like this could expand far beyond Google profiles to involve Facebook, Twitter, and Flickr. Could this in-development app handle that kind of task? “That, we could do today,” says Neven.

Neat/Creepy.

But obviously, that won’t be happening any time soon. There are way too many privacy concerns.

“I think we are taking a sort of cautious route with this. It’s a sensitive area, and it’s kind of a subjective call on how you would do it.”

Tonight, we’re seeing Facebook‘s all-new design for displaying photos rolling out to quite a few users. It features larger images, a lightbox-type UI and other features that put Facebook in even more competition with Flickr on the casual and social photography front.

We got wind of these new Facebook Photos features some months ago around the end of September. And while some users have had this feature for a while, we were beginning to wonder why Facebook was delaying a general roll-out.

However, Facebook did confirm yesterday that the new photo viewer was on its way to all users soon; and tonight, we’re seeing this new interface from several accounts.

One major benefit, from Facebook’s perspective, is that users will be able to browse through many photos in the lightbox layer without disrupting the underlying page and “losing their place.” Other features include hi-res photos, photo-download links and bulk tagging options.

In fact, as we noted last fall, many of these feature upgrades strongly mirror recent changes to Flickr’s own UI during the summer of 2010.

Along with Tag Suggestions, a.k.a. nascent facial recognition technology, Facebook’s photo offering, which has long been a distinguishing factor of the social network, is remaining strong and competitive.

Check your Facebook account to see if you have the new interface; if you don’t have it tonight, expect it to come over the next couple weeks.

In the comments, let us know what you think of the new Facebook Photos. Are these improvements more welcome to you than other changes Facebook has made in the past?

Facebook Photos, one of the social network’s most popular features, is getting a big and potentially controversial upgrade with a new feature that automatically suggests who users should tag in photos based on facial recognition technology.

The new feature, Tag Suggestions, will begin rolling out to U.S. users next week, according to Facebook Vice President of Product Chris Cox. He told us that the product utilizes technology that was built in-house, as well as some technology that came from partners. Cox did not disclose the partners Facebook worked with for Tag Suggestions, although we have our suspicions.

Tag Suggestions is fairly straightforward. Whenever you’re offered the chance to tag groups of your friends in an album, Facebook will utilize its facial recognition technology to group similar faces together and automatically suggest the friend you should tag them with. As you can see in the screenshot below, Facebook fills in the “Who is this?” box with its suggestion — all you have to do is click the “Save Tags” button to accept.

Cox says that suggestions will only appear when its algorithms have “high confidence” of who’s being suggested. Unlike Face.com, Facebook doesn’t reveal its certainty level and wouldn’t reveal what percentage actually correlates to “high confidence.”

The social giant is also preemptively addressing the potential privacy issues that will be brought up from automatic, algorithmic tagging. Users can opt out of Tag Suggestions by going to their privacy settings and disabling the “Suggest photos of me to friends” feature.

This release is part of a bigger effort to upgrade Photos. Earlier this year, Facebook launched a slew of upgrades, including bigger thumbnails, group tagging and drag-and-drop photos.

This may be the biggest upgrade for Photos yet, though. Photo tagging is considered a chore by many users, yet it is the company’s most popular product. “Photos are by far the most engaging content Facebook has ever had,” Cox told us earlier today. By vastly simplifying the tagging process, Facebook expects that its millions of users will tag more photos, which will create millions of new engagement points and social connections, making it that much more addicting.

Face.com, the developers of the facial recognition technology behind Facebook apps like Photo Tagger and Photo Finder announced that it is opening up its API, which will allow developers to take advantage of this technology anywhere on the web. We had a chat with Face.com founder Gil Hirsch, who talked about the technology, the API, Facebook’s Open Graph, and what kind of apps we can expect to see around this API.

Basically, the API allows third-parties to utilize the technology behind Photo Finder and Photo Tagger to create new and unique ways of utilizing facial recognition. Face.com has scanned billions of photos and tagged over 50 million users through these two apps. Between the API and Facebook’s Open Graph initiative, imagine how many more will be scanned/tagged.

"What it means for us, is you can now apply facial recognition on your social graph," Hirsch tells WebProNews. You can take the functionality to other websites. "You can take it outside the walled garden [of Facebook]." You can ID your Facebook friends in Picasa or Flickr photos for example.

Hisrch says he’s heard two to three hundred people have ideas for what they wanted to do with the technology before they even opened up the API. These things range from retail apps to e-cards, and campaign managers wanting to personalize campaigns. "Everyone came up with a different idea," he says.

The company has some sample apps set up to give developers an idea of the kinds of things that are possible. One such example is the Tagger Widget. This lets users add a Face tagging interface to any image on a webpage. It automatically places tags on people’s faces, and allows users to add names.

Another example is PosterYourself, which lets you inject your Facebook friends’ faces into images for things like e-cards, posters, and other creative apps:

These are just a couple of examples. There’s no telling what we’ll see developers actually do with this technology. Technorati Founder Dave Sifry is already utilizing the API for some apps. He says, "I’ve been impressed with Face.com’s API, and their plan for working closely with developers to build great applications that incorporate face detection and face recognition. Open platforms like this one will enable the creation of exciting new applications that we’ve never seen before at scale."

Facebook’s Open Graph has already caused a great deal of concern over privacy. It will be interesting to see if any such concerns are raised over this, with people’s faces are coming into play (though that was really already happening through Facebook itself).

"Privacy is something from day one we’ve put in everything we do," says Hirsch. He says Face.com applies the same logic that applies inside of Facebook. You can only ID people within your social graph. He says they enforce that through verification through valid Facebook or Twitter sessions. You can’t just do people who aren’t your friends.

The idea behind this API is that people will create more engagement around photos all around the web, Hirsch says. A lot of people ask him if it can be applied to security strategies, but Face.com is more focused on the consumer world, and applying its technology to consumer apps – not security.

Face.com does have a product that can help you monitor where your Face is being used, however. It’s had "Face Alerts " for a while. Think about this as Google Alerts for images of you.
