Hu2 is a London-based company comprised of four crazy dudes (and one dudette!). They have some simply awesome ideas when it comes to creative uses of vinyl. Flicking through their online catalogue, we’re reminded of some of Banksy’s pieces, which we really dig here at Abduzeedo.

Vinyl wall decals are often overlooked but they’re a really simple and creative solution to playing up a boring wall. Rich Soil Lion – Rich Soil Clothing

The first of 2 tee shirt illustrations I was asked to create for Los Angeles Lakers player Lamar Odom’s clothing line, Rich Soil. Art Direction was provided by Jonathan Garcia.

I use roughly 3 programs; Photoshop, Cinema 4D and Poser occasionally. I didn’t know any decent tutorial sites when I started so as far as learning the technical aspects of the programs I would just keep trying artistically. I also learned a lot by looking at surrealist & futuristic painters work like H.R Giger & Salvador Dali.

Trinity – Advanced Photoshop Magazine

Artwork created for the Advanced Photoshop Magazine cover contest, the brief was only to use one of the provided stocks. The image was not a selected winner, but did lead to the commission of the illustration ‘Living Is Loving’.

The second promotional illustration I created upon joining the Keystone Design Union, a international collective that houses some of worlds finest artists.

Artwork I created for Tiger Beers global exhibition Tiger Translate. The exhibition was focused around the concept of balance, and was curated by Kult.Sg.

I am still pretty influenced by surrealists like Dali and Magritte but less than I was before. These days I get more inspired by my surroundings, especially tagging & graffiti and artists like Banksy.

As I have mentioned a few times we are working on an iPhone app for Abduzeedo. We had some small issues that delayed the release but now we are on the right track for the launch. First, however, we want to test it more and with more people.

The first version of the iPhone app will be about inspiration and it will show all images from the Daily Inspiration series. We have already planned the expansion to all the inspiration content on Abduzeedo.

Sneak Peek

Here is a short video showing the basic functionality of the app. Our goal is to provide an easy to use interface for inspiring images, so you can save it on your iPhone or iPod Touch; share it with your friends via Twitter or visit the site for more information.

Looking for some beta testers

We want to release the app as soon as possible, but we want to make sure that it will be running smoothly, that is why we need to test it a little longer. Therefore we are looking for some iPhone/iPod Touch users that would be willing to test it for us.

One of my new years resolution is to practice and learn more 3D. I’ve been playing with Cinema 4D for quite some time now but never went into much depth. I know it’s going to take some time until I reach the level of the images I’m about show you here, but I’m going to do my best to make the learning process as fun as possible.

Every new year I like to try new things with the Abduzeedo logo. In 2009 I changed the typography a little bit, but now that it’s 2010 I decided that the blog needed a symbol. That necessity came up when we are finishing the Abduzeedo iPhone app and we needed to have an icon.

So in this tutorial/case study I will show you how I created the symbol and what the inspiration behind it was. We will use Adobe Illustrator for the tutorial

Inspiration

My first idea was to play with a triangle. First because it resembles the abduction light coming from the sky, and second it also resembles an ‘A’.

Of all plane figures the triangle is both rigid and strong, but the beauty of the equilateral triangle reminds us of those lessons necessary to keep our spiritual building both strong and secure, now and forevermore.

Following this idea I looked for references in style. My idea was to create something simple without gradients but with some color overlays. I also didn’t want anything rounded, and instead wanted to try something more acute.

Step 1

Open Illustrator and create a new document. The size is not important right now. After that get the Polygon Tool and create a triangle.

Step 2

With the Pen Tool (P) create a point in the middle of the base of the triangle. After that with the Direct Selection Tool (A) select the point and move it up like the image below.

Step 3

Duplicate the triangle twice. After that rotate one of the copies (1). Select 2 of the triangles, the original and the one you rotated and go to Window>Pathfinder. Select the Minus Front option over the Shape Mode, it’s the second. You will have to delete some parts to leave just the ones inside of the original triangle.

Step 4

With the Rectangle Tool (M) create a rectangle like from the bottom left to the center of the base (1). After that with the Pen Tool (P) delete and move to create half of the base of the symbol (2).

Repeat the same process to create the other half of the base. Use the image below for reference.

Step 5

Repeat again the previous step to create the right side.

Step 6

It’s time to make some adjustments, with the Direct Selection Tool (A) move the points to make the symbol a little bit bolder. Use the image below for reference.

Step 7

Now it’s time to add some colors. I used 4 basic colors, pink, yellow, green and cyan (1), the order is very important. After that go to Window>Transparency. Select the all objects and change the Transparency mode to Multiply. By doing that there will be 3 new colors, red, dark green and purple.

Step 8

Create a new document, I used A4 for the size. Then with the Rectangle Tool (M) create a rectangle to fill the whole page. Change the color of the rectangle to (#383434).

Step 9

Copy the symbol from the other document and paste it in the new one with the dark background. As I was using Multiply for the Transparency Mode, the symbol won’t be shown. So, change the Transparency mode back to Normal and change the color of the symbol to white.

Step 10

Now just paste again the color symbolo and align it to be over the white version. That way the colors will be visible.

Conclusion

Now let’s finish the poster adding the logotype "Abduzeedo" with the slogan "abducted by design".

The idea of this little walkthrough was to show you the creative process behind the new symbol we will be using on Abduzeedo now in 2010. We are still working on some new features, so you will start to see this symbol more and more.

Also we will have this poster printed in case you want to support the blog, as well as t-shirts.

Light Effect version

With the icon done I created another version of the poster adding some old school light effects. But this is for the next tutorial.

Another year is closing and a new one is on the way. The start of every new year is filled with planning and goals for the next 365 days that follow. It’s not any different for me. I have some crazy resolutions for the next 12 months, and I believe 2010 will be a creative year. One for the books.

I was reading some articles online. One in particular was a really interesting post by Mike Kuz (one of my favorite designers) for 24ways.org called a New Year’s resolution, where he talks about trying more and not limiting yourself to the web when designing for the web.

“A key factor in creating something original and fresh for the web is to stop thinking in terms of web design. The first thing we need to do is forget the notion of headers, footers, side bars etc. A website doesn’t necessarily need any of these, so even before we’ve started we’ve already limited our design possibilities by thinking in these very conventional and generally accepted web terms.” – Mike Kuz

Besides reading articles I love listening to podcasts when I’m running. I’ve listened to some really great ones, but there’s two in particular that I want to mention. The first is from the IA Summit 09 called Creating Magic Kingdoms: User Experience Lessons from Disney’s Imagineers by Mike Atherton.

Mike talks about passion when doing something and how that helps us to achieve our goals. He uses Disney and their engineers or as he calls them- “Imagineers” as an example. It’s very motivating with great insights about the importance of trying and believing in what you’re doing.

“Our greatest asset was ignorance. We didn’t know we could fail” – Marty Sklar, Imagineer.

The second podcast that I found useful was a great episode from the SpoolCast, podcast from the UIE.com by the mighty Jared Spool, called Innovation Beyond the Buzzword. It was an interview with Scott Berkun and he talked about the meaning of the word innovation and how we can bring it into our projects.

The part that I enjoyed the most was the discussion about how to be creative. He says that everyone is creative but somehow we deny that because it is something very particular of each person, there’s no right or wrong, but instead only points of views. We simply don’t want to expose ourselves or get into discussions or arguments about our thoughts and we end up choosing the logic fields like math or science where there’s one right answer.

“True innovation starts with you allowing yourself to be creative and recording your ideas religiously in a safe place like a notebook or sketchpad. Don’t self-censor, either. Initial precision and “getting it right” are the antithesis of creativity. It’s essential to let the ideas flow, and your ideas will improve as you continue to record them. Your journal is an incubator of ideas. Not every idea will be a success, and some will be terrible! But Scott says that’s OK. When an opportunity for change arises, you’ll have a treasure trove of ideas to pick though.”

They go on to talk about the importance of group trust when you have an idea because that’s what’s necessary in making the idea come true. This leads to one of the most important topics for us designers that is how to provide useful feedback, or honest and constructive criticism among teams and individuals.

Great design by Glennz, one of the most creative t-shirt designers out there. Glennz simply plays and tries different concepts for well known things like this one.

When I said in the beginning of the text that 2010 would be a creative year I meant that the best way to be creative is practicing and exercising creativity. There was a time where I believed that good ideas would come out of the blue. I later found out that there’s always a lot of thought involved. Nobody simply comes up with a good idea if there’s not a problem to solve, a question to ask, or a desire to fulfill.

I want to propose that we all make 2010 a great and creative year by sharing our knowledge and not being afraid of experimenting. Let’s be less critical about the outcome of our experiments and more cheerful about our discoveries in the learning process and the evolution path in the design skills. That’s what’s most important after all.

A More Tangled Web

This presentation by Eric Meyer took place on November 5, 2009 at Build Conference.

Meyer discusses universal uses for HTML and CSS, the death of the browser plugin, and shares an interesting viewpoint on the proposed completion date of 2022 for HTML 5.

I majored in Industrial Design. During the course, however, I changed to visual design/graphic design. Even though I changed I always admired good industrial designs, especially because of all the considerations taken during the process. It’s more than visual; there are materials, ways of production, logistics.

In this post I’ve selected some of the coolest industrial designs from Behance. I was looking for some inspiration in this field and decided to browse through Behance, and before I knew it I had hundreds of tabs opened.

I love Pixel Art, I have 3 posters decorating the walls in my apartment with pixel art, probably because I grew up playing those 8/16 bits video-games for consoles like NES, SNES, Master System and Genesis. One of the masters of this trade is the EbOY.

EbOY is Kai Vermehr, Steffen Sauerteig and Svend Smital. We create re-usable pixel objects and take them to build complex and extensible artwork. And we make toys.

It’s the end of the year and for the last tutorial of 2009 I will show you how to create a poster inspired by the amazing work of Simon Page, especially those beautiful posters for the International Year of Astronomy. I created this design first for the Abduzeedo 3rd Anniversary poster but I changed it a little bit for this Photoshop tutorial.

So I will show you how to create a minimalistic design in Photoshop playing with stock photos, blend modes and filters. We will also use a paper texture to give a nice retro feel to our design.

Step 1

Open Photoshop and create a new document. I’m using for this tutorial 900×1440 pixels for the size. Fill the background layer with black and then go to Edit>Transform>Scale. Resize the background layer like the image below.

Step 2

Go to Layer>Layer Style>Color Overlay. Select brown for the color, the one I used is #37281e

Step 3

After the Color Overlay, select Stroke. Use 4 pixels for the Size, Inside for the Position, Color Dodge for the Blend Mode and White for the Color.

Step 4

Add another layer beneath the brown layer and fill it with beige, the one I used is #edd3aa.

Step 5

Let’s import a photo of a ladder. The one I used is courtesy of Shutterstock and you can get it at http://www.shutterstock.com/pic-39923698/stock-photo-ladder-leading-up-t…

Step 6

Select the image layer and go to Image>Adjustments>Hue and Saturation. Reduce the Hue to -170 and leave the other values the same.

Step 7

Still with the image layer selected go to Image>Adjustments>Levels. Increase the black input to 87, the middle input to 0.93. Also for the Output Leves use 0 and 130.

Step 8

Go to Layer>New Adjustment Layer>Hue and Saturation. This adjustment layer has to be on top of the other layers, the ladder and the background. Increase the Lightness to 12.

Step 9

Let’s use another stock image, this time of a starfield with a nebula. The one I used is courtesy of Shutterstock and you can get it at http://www.shutterstock.com/pic-1611518/stock-photo-space-heart.html

Step 10

With the Polygonal Lasso Tool (L) create a marquee selection of the yellow sky. After that with the stars image selected go to Layer>Layer Mask>Reveal Selection.

Step 11

Go to Image>Adjustments>Hue and Saturation. Reduce the Hue to 30, the Saturation to 30 and increase the Lightness to 13. Also select Colorize. Use the image below for reference.

Step 12

Now let’s add some text. I added 2010 using Helvetica Neue Bold, 107pt using brown (9e7539) for the color. Below the 2010 I added "Happy New Year" using Helvetica Neue Light, 33pt with the same brown. At the bottom of the page I added a quote by Paulo Coelho using Helvetica Neue Regular, 16pt. Use the image below for reference.

Step 13

Add a new layer on top of the others and fill it with white. Then go to Filter>Render>Lighting Effects. For the Style select RGB lights and leave the other values the same.

Step 14

Go to Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur. Use 120 pixels for the Radius.

Step 15

Reduce the Opacity of the layer to 30% and also go to Edit>Transform>Rotate. Rotate the image so the red will be at the bottom. After that go to Image>Adjustments>Levels. Increase the Black input to 70.

Step 16

Let’s use another stock photo, now a paper texture. Once again the one I used was courtesy of Shutterstock and can be found at http://www.shutterstock.com/pic-20845342/stock-photo-old-yellow-paper-ba…

Step 17

Change the Blend Mode of the paper texture to Multiply. This layer will be on top of the others.

Step 18

Go again to Layer>New Adjustment Layer>Hue and Saturation. This adjustment layer will be on top of the other layers. Reduce the Saturation to -32 and increase the Lightness to +28.

Conclusion

In this tutorial we played only with Blend Modes, masks, and basic filters. The idea was to create something minimalistic but beautiful and with a retro feel. It’ll also make for a really cool New Year’s card!
