The word is out, folks: HTC CEO Peter Chou has something big on the books for tomorrow. A live teleconference is scheduled for at 8:30 PT/11:30 ET, and while the email making the rounds offers no insight, you can rest easy knowing that people will be speculating the night away.

Well, there was one: Google Wave. I loved Google Wave, and spent a lot of time experimenting with it as part of the closed developer preview before it launched. It was really fun to play with group collaboration and conversation, and the nature of the format made it extremely intuitive to use. However, Google ended the Wave project last year and, although they’re working on a solution for a self-hosted version, it’s not really used by the public any more.

But don’t think that this means you have no other option for this type of communication. Peers.me is a great alternative that’s not currently waiting for its switch to be flicked off. The group communication tool shares many of the features of Google’s product (even its name!), but is currently maintained and in service, making it a considerable option for the next time you need to send out that group memo.

Waving Goodbye to Email

Peers.me is centred around the waves you create – yes, that’s right: the “wave”. Although this seems too much of a coincidence, it was quite favourable that I could pick up the format quite quickly thanks to my experience with Google’s product. When you signup, you are given a custom *.peers.me URL to access your wave inbox.

A wave is essentially the replacement for an email, in that it is the centre of your group’s conversation. Naturally, you can create a wave for each different topic of discussion and you’re not really limited in that sense. The participants in a wave are determined by the group you have chosen to start the wave in, which is, in turn, decided by your creation of one from the sidebar menu. This has the whole Google+ Circles-style feel to it – especially since each “Wave group” has it’s own division of your address – which is pretty nice.

Waves act just like a regular email; you can write and format text and embed media to be shared with the recipients of the wave. Similar to the system on Twitter, hashtags can be applied to a wave to be easily sorted later on. Of course, unlike Twitter, the results when searching for a hashtag are only limited to the waves you are included in. Unfortunate for the curious, but favourable for the privacy-concious!

A Peers.me Wave

It is really hard to ignore the obvious ties with Google’s products here. The interface does not look too much unlike Google, nor does the overall structure of the service. Then there’s hashtags and the Circle-like groups system, which makes Peers.me seem very familiar. To be clear, however, that is not a complaint. In fact, having a stable service that brings in favourite features of several different services is very promising, and could be great for your personal or business life.

Waving Hello (or Goodbye!)

Of course, this group messaging web app is all about the group aspect. Therefore, you can invite friends to any conversation at any time, much like forwarding an email but maintaining all the original recipients. This is a very helpful feature, as it doesn’t allow a conversation to split up into sub-groups of recipients. Instead, every recipient (new or old) receives every message.

Just as it’s easy to add a new recipient to a wave, it’s incredibly easy to leave one too. If you’ve had enough, all that is required to cease the communication is to hit the unfollow button in your inbox. This is a super useful feature that I wish other social networks offered.

One can add a new recipient through their wave address (username@group) or through email.

Pricing and Availability

Peers.me is publicily available for free, as long as you’re able to limit your recipients to the measly number of tens. Loners with the odd contact (or web app reviewers who have nothing better to do than write reviews at 1am on a Saturday morning ) will adapt to the limit of free invites, but socialites have the option to purchase membership for more people.

Peers.me works on a credits system when additional membership is purchased. Users have the option to buy credits for between €0,60 and €1,40 per user per month, depending on the quantity purchased.

Peers.me is free for up to 10 users, and very cheap to add additional ones.

Conclusion

Peers.me is trying to take a slice out of the massive demand for communication services. We certainly love to talk online, and do so privately (through means such as this) or more publicly (on social networks). As developers realise this, the growth in group communication apps has been evident, especially this year. Peers.me seems like a pretty secure choice. It brings the best of public communications style that we’ve gotten used to with social networks, and takes it all as private as email.

Tools such as the easy adding of new recipients and categorizing waves by hashtag are really great to have. And, if you feel like you won’t remember to keep checking yet another inbox, options in your notifications allow you to receive emails when events occur in your waves. It seems replacing your email might not be too difficult after all!

What can you use the application for?


RingLeadr takes another approach to the standard daily deals concept. The user provides a city or zip code location to begin. Then the user selects a specific business that they would like to receive a deal from. The user then adds additional information, such as how much the deal is worth, how much of a discount they hope to get and a short description of the deal. The user can also supply an image to go with their personally created deal. The deal is submitted to RingLeadr who in turn shows it to the business. If the business approves the deal, it is posted to the site and the user receives a link to access and buy it, just like a regular daily deal website. The user can pass the deal on through Facebook, Twitter or email to encourage more people to buy so it becomes active. The RingLeadr homepage features a scrolling feed of recent activity. Users can also join an existing deal.

What is the history and popularity of the application?


RingLeadr was founded in September of 2010 by Michael Davis. The application was intended to provide a customizable twist on the standard daily deal website. Rather than looking for existing deals, users could actually suggest their own deals. The company is currently based in New York City, New York and consists of fewer than five individuals.

What are the differences to other apps?


The Daily Deal concept seems a bit overdone, however RingLeadr has managed to approach it in an entirely new way. Rather than wait and see what businesses come up with, users can actually suggest deals that they would be interested in purchasing. These deals must be approved by the business of course, but provide the user with a way to communicate their needs directly to the business.

How does the application look and feel to use?


The RingLeadr website invites users with a blue and grey color scheme and clutter free layout. The homepage features the stylish RingLeadr logo under the silhouette of a crowd of people, with a single person highlighted in dark blue (presumably the ring leader). Below, the user can find the location entry box. Below that, two blue buttons are available for users who wish to create a deal or access existing deals. The user activity feed is found at the very bottom of the homepage.

How does the registration process work?


To get started, a new user can enter a city or zip code then click the blue and white “Create a Deal” button found along the left hand side, near the bottom of the RingLeadr homepage. A pop up box will appear and ask the user to sign in. Those who do not have an account can click either the blue Facebook button at the bottom of the box or the blue “Create One Now!” link just above it. The link causes the box to shift into the registration form. The form asks for a first and last name, email address, username and password.

What does it cost to use the application?


RingLeadr gives all users access for free. There are no subscription fees or other charges for suggesting daily deals or browsing existing deals. Of course the user will have to pay for any deals they decide to purchase, but the site does not set any minimum requirements to maintain an account.

Who would you recommend the application to?


RingLeadr.com is aimed at anyone who loves daily deal websites but dislikes receiving all the spam messages they can generate. Users can instead suggest a customized deal that suits their needs.

Tables for layout are lame, but they really are the only way to reliably craft HTML emails (currently). View source on the HTML email I sent recently and you’ll see markup similar to that of Sean Powell’s boilerplate. (I prefer only one td as a single wrapper rather than individual cells for the layout — divs can usually handle that just fine.)

Update: Some of you have mentioned that the Authentic Jobs email I linked to doesn’t display nicely in Outlook 2007 or 2010 (screenshot). For the most part, I’m okay with those three items being stacked rather than in a row. However, if having your HTML email appear as similar as possible across all clients (which is still virtually impossible today), table cells are really the only way to go.

What bugs me with every social media sharing widget I have looked at is that they are not very keyboard friendly, i.e. they are difficult or even impossible to use without a mouse. They also tend to use invalid, obtrusive markup.

I’m sure you would have noticed the $0.99 membership promotion we ran yesterday.

Tuts+ has never tried Promotion of a membership in this way before. Ever. We are not internet marketers so we are still learning and still make mistakes. We didn’t know what would be received poorly and what would be taken positively.

In proofing the post I wasn’t as thorough as I should have been. I wasn’t clear that it would default to a regular $9 membership after the first month. Naturally, this caused anger. To make sure nobody is adversely impacted from this I will be individually emailing those who were fortunate enough to get the offer. If they don’t get the email then we’ll happily refund them.

There was some confusion around the discount code. There was only the one code for all of the sites, but it had many uses. It ran out very quickly, in 3.5 hours. Again, this was the first time we’ve ever done something like this, and there was no way to tell how popular it would or wouldn’t be. There’s a high likelihood that we’ll do this or something similar to it again, but we can be confident in saying the same mistakes wont be made again.

I’m sorry for any confusion or disappointment that was caused by this, we’ll know how to better handle it next time.
