What can you use the application for?

TimeCenter provides users with an online appointment scheduling tool. The application includes automatic SMS and email reminder messages to help prevent a missed appointment. The user is given access to their own TimeCenter page that can be used as their website. TimeCenter is ideal for a number of businesses in many industries, including fitness classes, beauty salons, workshops, coaching sessions, events and meetings. A journal feature is included so the user can see what was discussed with the client during their previous appointment. The application also maintains a customer database for the user that can provide an overview of clients, including personal preferences, email addresses, telephone numbers and other contact details. Users can upload their company logo to make their TimeCenter page look professional and identifiable. Clients can visit the user’s TimeCenter page and make appointments or cancel or reschedule booked appointments. Promotional tools are included that allow the user to send text messages and/or emails to all of their clients at once to alert them to promotions and special offers.

What is the history and popularity of the application?

TimeCenter was founded in 2007. The application was intended to provide a better appointment setting solution for small to medium size businesses. The company is based in Sweden with RackSpace hosted servers in the United Kingdom. Current languages include English, Swedish, French and Danish.

What are the differences to other apps?

TimeCenter offers many of the same features found with other similar applications. Some users might prefer TimeCenter because of its clean, professional style. The application includes a number of helpful extras such as email and text message notifications that can help prevent a forgotten appointment. The application also allows users to send out promotional material to their customer database.

How does the application look and feel to use?

The TimeCenter homepage welcomes users with a vibrant blue and green color scheme. The stylish logo features a clock in place of the letter “c” with a light reflection just underneath. New users can easily navigate to all the important areas of the TimeCenter homepage. The application also allows users to customize their appointment pages with logos and content.

How does the registration process work?

New users can try TimeCenter for free for 30 days by clicking the green and white “Try It For Free” button found along the left hand side of the homepage. The user is then asked to choose their preferred TimeCenter plan by clicking the corresponding green “Sign Up” button. The registration form asks for a name, company name, desired booking page URL, email address and a password. A small note at the bottom of the form advises the user that by submitting their information, they are automatically agreeing to the TimeCenter terms of use.

What does it cost to use the application?

TimeCenter provides users with three membership options to choose from. The first is the One plan which is intended for a single user and includes one calendar for just under $30 per month. The Pro plan is intended for small teams and allows up to ten calendars for just under $50 per month. The Premium plan is the site’s “top of the line” plan that gives the user up to 50 calendars for just under $100 per month. Text messages cost extra and start at around 16 cents per message. Users can purchase text messages in packages of 100, 500 and 1,000. The higher the quantity, the less the user pays per text message.

Who would you recommend the application to?

TimeCenter could be a valuable tool for small to medium size businesses that need to take appointments. The application provides many helpful services as well as text messaging options (which cost extra, but might be worth it for some businesses).

As Facebook users we all think about how great it would be to find and befriend people without needing to have their email addresses or even their names. We all think that whenever a pretty one crosses our paths, or whenever we come across a person who looks like he/she could take our careers forwards. Well, someone has come up with a service that to some extent lets us do that: befriend people without having to really know their names, their email addresses or any other kind of personally-identifiable information.

Just ask any successful Internet marketer, and you will quickly learn how important an opt-in list is.

Sometimes, beginning Internet marketers confuse list building with collecting email addresses. The two are worlds apart. Anyone can collect email addresses and send out numerous emails, the bulk of which will be deleted or lost in the spam folder. However, when you build a list of prospects to which to send emails, you are building a list of prospects who are already interested in what you are selling.

This is why it is called list building. You are not simply collecting or gathering email addresses, but you are building a list of targeted prospects, which takes time. In order to get individuals to take the time to give you their email address so that you can send them marketing emails, you will probably have to give them something in return. In fact, this is one of the easiest ways to get people to consent to receiving marketing emails.

Many Internet marketers give away a free ecourse, ebook, or something along those lines as part of their list building techniques. Look at it this way; if they are on your website, they are most likely interested in the niche in which you are marketing. Give them something for free in exchange for their name and email address, and you will add a contact that is truly interested in what you are selling.

List building is about building relationships, not collecting email addresses. While you are building a list of prospects so that you can market to them through email, you must focus on building trust. You want your prospects to view you as an expert in your field, someone in whom they can believe. While you may send numerous emails without making a sale, build relationships while you are building your list and the sales will follow.

List building is something you may have to work on from time to time. Even when you have a large list, customers will come and go and so you never want to be unconcerned about building a list. Once you have a list of prospects to market to, you want to ensure that your emails will actually be opened and read. This is where the subject line comes in. Regardless of how powerful your message is, unread messages lose all of their power the moment the recipient pushes the delete button. Therefore, you must ensure that your email subject lines convince prospects to open and read your email.

If you are new at this, it may take some time and effort to write convincing subject lines. You can learn a lot just by browsing your own email inbox. Which subject lines convince you to click on the message, and which ones do you delete? Start noticing other subject lines, and use what you learn in your list building techniques.

Hotmail users can use the “name+something@hotmail.com” email filtering trick—so, you know, it’s at Gmail’s level from five years ago. But it’s got an even more powerful spam-fighting, privacy-protecting option: creating an entirely new address that arrives right in your inbox. More »

Some don’t care. But spam gets irritating. What is spam you ask? It is an email sent to you by companies you don’t even know of and have nothing to do with you. You are considered spammed if you receive tons of these cheesy advertisements that fill up you bulk email folder. It gets worse. These spam emails keep being sent to you and the thousands of other people that these companies have in their email address list.

If you have an online business, one thing you wouldn’t want to hear is that your advertisements and newsletters are considered as spam. One way to avoid being addressed as a spammer is by creating an opt-in email list. An opt-in email list is a list of email addresses where those who receive your emails have chosen to receive them. Unlike spam, the recipients have a choice, either to receive your newsletters or ezines of not to receive them.

This way, when you send your advertisements, newsletters and the like, your emails wouldn’t be considered spam. If you’re asking what is all the fuss about spam emails? Well, you could be fined a minimum of $500 for sending them. And by creating your own opt-in email list you wouldn’t be risking your business just because you sent advertisements.

Creating your own opt-in email list isn’t as hard as you might think. There are many resources available in the internet to help you create these opt-in email lists. You can’t say you don’t know how since there are many websites who will guide you through the whole process.

The advantage of an opt-in email list is that your recipients have full knowledge that you are sending them your emails. To be sure that they are giving you their own email address is by sending a confirmation letter. This confirmation letter will be confirmed by the user through the email address he/she has sent you.

Be sure that you’re sending you emails to those who have confirmed emails. Also, don’t send your emails to those who have chosen to stop receiving your emails. This may give you a small list but your list will contain only the email addresses of those interested on you products or services and won’t jeopardize your business.

When creating your newsletters and ezines. Be sure that it’s content has information that is valuable to your recipients. It must contain things such as up to date updates on your business. Don’t send them emails which contain exaggerated advertisements.

One thing you should avoid is sending these emails over and over again to the same users. They don’t need multiples of your newsletters. Sending them one newsletter is already enough. They don’t need another email with the exact content as the other email you sent them.

Make your advertisements straight to the point. Show them exactly what they’ll get if they purchase from you. Don’t give them extras that you can’t provide. Don’t send emails like other companies containing things such as an order form. If your recipients want to purchase products and services from you they will go to your site or send you emails.

All these are very helpful guidelines to prevent you from being called a spammer. So start your own opt-in email list now.

If you could only send one more marketing email, what type
of email would it be?

Would it be acquisition? Retention? A bit of cross selling perhaps? Let’s face it,
the options are almost endless! If you’re like me, you probably want it to be
the one that makes the most money.

That makes sense doesn’t it? Why waste time on emails that
don’t work? So it would need to be highly targeted, sent to people who want to
receive it and sent to the people most likely to buy now.

So how does the marketer find that segment of people? What
differentiates these people from the rest of the list? And what can marketers
practically do to add this email segment to their campaign programme?

Email is undoubtedly one of the most effective types of push
marketing you can get today. But to get it to work properly, you need to know
what to send and to whom.

If you look at the email addresses in your list, they
will all vary in their potential value to you as a marketer. The ones who
haven’t brought anything at all, or not visited the website or opened an email
in a long time, are probably right at the bottom of the pile in potential value, but those who are visiting the site regularly, choosing products, going
through the buying process, sit well and truly on the other end of the spectrum
in terms of value.

These regularly active users, even if they haven’t bought
yet, are close to buying, increasing their value as a customer. And arguably,
the further they get down the conversion funnel the higher the potential value
they have.

Ultimately a user will buy, or not. And it’s these ‘nots’ that represent some of the biggest opportunities in email marketing.

The recent Conversion Report from Econsultancy and RedEye found that of the 35% of
organisations who DID target these ‘nots’ (people who abandon their online
baskets or shopping trolleys), 84% of them had seen improvements in conversion
rates.

So targeting abandoners makes sense. But there are still
quite a few organisations happy to leave this type of email to their
competition (53% of those surveyed!) and the cynic in me can’t help thinking
that one of the elements that makes targeting abandoners so successful is that
so few are currently doing it.

The future of email is changing; it’s not that the
technology is changing, or that new applications are making email easier, it’s
that customers are changing their attitude to marketing. The DMA recently
published research (Data Tracking Study 2010) which suggests the highest
changes in attitude to unsubscribing had come under the ‘irrelevant or over
communication’ banners.

This shows it’s even more important to get your targeting
right; and if I could send only one type of email, I would want it to produce
the best result as far as revenue is concerned and also improve my relationship
with the customer.

And what better way to achieve this than a customer service
email, focused on helping the ones that got away come back to my website and
buy my product.

Contrary to some popular opinion, this type of email doesn’t
always need to contain more money off as the customers were pretty close to
buying the first time. And while they are merrily surfing around, comparing
prices and products again, it doesn’t take too much of a nudge to get them to
come back, to take another look and have another go.

If email campaigns were chosen on ROI and value to the customer experience,
then this is a good place to start. Every email marketer can easily send out
broadcast emails, but we all know where that leads eventually.

Everyone knows
that sending highly targeted relevant emails work and choosing ones that are
based on the customer’s web behaviour are a good place to start. The easiest of
these is the cart or basket abandonment email and once this is in place, you
can begin looking further up the conversion funnel to find other pots of gold.

Pointofmail.com is a new web service that you can use in order to know exactly who is reading the emails and attachments you are sending out. You can also know where they were read, for how long and it they were forwarded.

Moreover, Pointofmail.com will let you modify emails after they have been sent. That is a great option and no mistaking. If you have to send a report to your boss and you realize you have forgotten to attach it the minute you send the email out, then there is no need to panic. This application will let you undo the wrong, and avoid looking completely unprofessional.

Pointofmail.com works with all email addresses, and it also supports virtually any email client that you could think of. And while you are not required to download anything in order to begin using it, a set of optional add-ins is featured.
Again – all the main email clients and browsers on the market today are fully supported.

Today’s Internet marketing atmosphere is plagued with email spam that doesn’t seem to stop as unethical spammers just hammer our email boxes with multiple offers for prescription drugs and other more intimate products.

Although spam attacks are annoying, it is important to keep your marketing reputation intact with quality email content sent only to your subscribers after receiving a double opt-in consent for your information.

Your focus is definitely to build a loyal, responsive list of subscribers willing to receive your emails and the safest way to build that list is with the double opt-in process.

In your rush to get your Internet marketing business going without a list, you might mistakenly try some shortcuts that will get you branded as a spammer.

Buying a list, gathering email addresses from forums and social networking profiles or using email addresses your friend uses is a definite No-No. Even when those email addresses are effectively public knowledge, you do not have permission to invade their email with your message.

Building your list without being branded a spammer requires some specific processes that start with the double opt-in on your website or blog. When you offer your visitors something of value to them, like a short report with information or step-by-step instructions they need, they will give you their email address and name in order to download it, which builds your list.

If you’ve correctly set up your site, that email sign-up will automatically go to your autoresponder and initiate a sequence of emails that will require a click on a link to verify both the email address and the permission to market to them.

When that happens, your new subscriber is added to your database on the autoresponder and a link to download the product is sent to your new member, along with a welcome email.

Even if you have permission to send emails to your subscribers, do not forget your manners. Send welcome emails and ones thanking your subscribers for anything they do, like provide information to you or buy one of your products.

The double opt-in gets you permission to send marketing emails, but it will not keep your subscribers happy if you treat them as strangers. An unsubscribe click is all it takes to lose them forever.

To keep your subscribers happy why not use the holidays and send out an email with offers of a special, free gift and it’s download link. No hoops to jump through. Just a gift from you to them. Make sure it is valuable to both them and to your marketing campaign. Include genuine holiday wishes in the email.

Email campaigns where permission is first sought are very successful, and most successful Internet marketers have built lucrative businesses with it. Make all marketing methods work for you, and these could include offline methods too, by printing your webpage link on everything you distribute. It does not have to be a large advertisement, just a simple link to your site and maybe one line of text offering something free.

Your best asset when you are building your list is patience. It takes time to build a responsive list and shortcuts will not benefit you. Never send unsolicited emails, instead use the double opt-in process and you will be more successful.

It’s clear that attending TechCrunch Disrupt is a big investment and deal for startups of all sizes. We watched career-altering moments happen at the Hackathon, on the floor at Startup Alley, and during Startup Battlefield Sessions, Fireside Chats with Michael Arrington, and special on stage product announcements.

After three days of watching some truly impressive interactions, I caught up with Rebecca Reeve, professional publicist, and we had a great conversation on how startups can practice effective PR at conferences where your access to media, investors, and incredible talent is unmatched.

Design Dishworthy Email Outreach

TechCrunch Disrupt conference sponsors, partners, and presenters are provided with a valuable press list. This list is an important commodity to your pre-conference preparation and strategy.

Make sure to treat this email list with the same respect you’d give your a personal friend’s email addresses (unless your someone who spams all your friends and family with your company’s updates). Do not add these people to your newsletter or other automated mailings unless they request it.

Segment With Style

Spend 2-3 hours researching the media list and find a handful of writers who are most likely to be interested in your company and product. You’ll receive far better results by focusing on a few targeted media, than blasting out updates to the entire list.

Outreach Without Overreach

Email outreach requires science. Start with a straightforward subject line that includes: Company Name, Product, Launching at TechCrunch Disrupt, Day, Time.

“Company Name Launches at TechCrunch Disrupt, Tuesday @ 12:30, Featuring…”

vs.

“Redacted Creator Promises Unprecedented Levels of Personalization…”

Personalize & Generalize

Open with personalization and a crisp one-line pitch that explains why the writer’s readership will care about this news story.

Lead With a Link

Link to your company’s website the first time you mention the company name (if you have a special page set up just for messaging around the conference, that’s even better!).

Clarify Your Request

State very simply what you are looking from from the press: an article, interview on their channel, video, even tweets.

“Hi Chrissie, I’m with Company X (link) and we’re launching our XYZ service on 9/28. I’d like to set up a 15 min briefing with you early next week…”

It’s Not a Sprint, It’s a Relationship

Plan a multi-email campaign. Start your media outreach 1-2 weeks in advance, asking for briefings.

Depending on how much time you have, follow-up at least once between 2-4 days after the initial email, and potentially even a third time depending on whether you had any response.

Briefings Lead to More Meaningful Content

Request a 15-minute briefing and provide at least three specific time slots. If you can get a blogger to meet with you in person chances that your company, product, and position will get great and more meaningful coverage are dramatically increased.

When you confirm a briefing, make sure you’ve scouted out a quiet location that’s on site, so you can minimize distractions and maximize conversation.

Prose Pacifies, Bullet Points Summarize

Organize your company’s core news with bullet points that excite verses trying to posture with paragraphs of prose.

Avoid Attachments

Include the official press release below your salutation and NOT as an attachment. People won’t open the attachment, and valuable information like stats can be searched for in an email archive.

Deliver the Full Monty Without Teasing

Make sure that you have new information to share if you’re reaching out with embargoed information.

“You may have read about our beta product a few months ago, we’re releasing it to a wider audience at TechCrunch Disrupt, and I’d love to highlight some of the improvements and new features.”

vs.

“I would love to set you up with 15 minutes to chat in-person with an executive at Wednesday at Disrupt to learn more. I can’t give you additional details but can tell you that the announcement is going to be “disruptive.” (HUH?)

Manage Your PR Firm’s Motives

PR firms should be instructed to NOT promote their brand over your brand. Let’s be honest, you’re spending a lot of money with your PR firm for them to market you and not themselves, especially in the lead of the outreach emails:

“I am excited to share that Redacted PR FIRM just started working with Redacted Company who will be making an announcement onstage at the show, that I think you will find of interest.”

Investing in TechCrunch Disrupt? Invest in People

Startup Alley

Sure it’s a small space, but it matters. Place your best staff at your “booth”, or hire great people to be there to represent you, even consider flying in a “super user” or “super fan” who can share your story in the most authentic, exciting, powerful way.

Creative Low-Cost Alley Swag

You may not have the budget for impressive swag, but have special business cards made up and branded specifically for the event (e.g. “We Disrupted in San Francisco”).

Research Your Targets

Spend time figuring out who, both media and investors, you want to meet before the event. You should know what they look like and if you tweet, start following them on Twitter. You will increase your chances of crossing paths, and recognizing them when you do.

Buffer Your CEO

CEOs shouldn’t send email pitches to media, it can make your company look small-time. Create a smart buffer for the media to coordinate with, and always make sure the CEO can be accessed for follow-up.

Tired, Hungry, Hungover

Before a conference make sure that your team, hackers/developers, speakers, Startup Alley representatives, and employees are in tip-top media shape.

People who are tired, hungry, hungover, or cranky should not be at the Startup Alley booth. You may think you’re invaluable, but when you’re a Grumpasaurous Rex (cause you and MC Hammer danced it up all night) you’re collateral damage. Leaving for a 4-hour nap, lunch, shower, and walk to clear your head is great damage control.

You’re on a Stage, a Huge-Ass Screen, & Being Streamed to Devices Everywhere

If you’re presenting that means you’re going to be on video, which means you’re going to be beamed out to the public in some very unflattering resolutions, renderings, and easily you’re going to look 10lbs heavier.

On Stage vs. Center Stage

Practice your presentation. If you’re the CEO, but you aren’t a compelling speaker, work with a team member, and be on stage, but not center stage.

Practice to the Bushes, Shubbery, Wall

One of the best things we saw at TechCrunch Disrupt was a guy with his publicist delivering his presentation to a line of bushes about 2 blocks from the venue.

Catch Cliches

Avoid the following words: rockstar, ninja, guru, and other overused startup cliches.

Save Self-Deprecating Humor for Later

Confidence is just sexy. Be sexy.

Anecdotes

Open with your name, role, and the name of your company. Press gets bored once they start hearing stories about your dog who met some boy carrying a bucket (see, you’re bored right now).

Put This On

It’s important to remember that if you’re presenting at TechCrunch Disrupt, you’re also presenting to countless constituents on live video streams (that will also become archived streams). What you wear matters:

Blue usually looks great

Red looks terrible

Wear an undershirt

End of the day? Bring a change of clothes.

Wear what you might wear to a VC meeting. If you’re most comfortable in a t-shirt, then just make sure it’s your very very best Threadless shirt. Pressed. In blue.

Hold a Retrospective

The event is over, give yourself and company a few days to recover, but make sure you hold a retrospective:

Organize a TechCrunch Disrupt “media list” of interesting and influential people you connected with and ask them if they’d be interested in getting updates from your company the next time you have an announcement.

Organize a TechCrunch “cohort list.” Startups are an exciting culture, and a lot happens between conference events. You were part of an experience, and you can build great relationships on having shared that with other entrepreneurs. You all have an exciting year ahead.

Watch any video that was captured of your presentation(s), get feedback, and improve.

Events are fun and powerful because people connect, so practice PR with the best intentions to connect, contribute, and be creative!

When you get on the web, where is the first place you go? If you regularly close your browser, it’s whatever you have your home page set as. Is the page the destination of the majority of your online activity? If so, there’s a good chance you have Facebook set as your home page. Maybe it’s Google or Yahoo or Bing.

Whatever it is, Facebook appears to be getting ready to make a big push to get users to switch their home pages to Facebook. The company is reportedly testing different messages for users, encouraging them to do so. Many of Facebook’s half a billion users are constantly logged into the site, and enhancing their experiences on many other sites on the web as a result already, so it stands to reason that many of these same users will take Facebook up on its offer, and just make the site their starting point.

Should Google be worried? Tell us what you think.

People are already spending a great deal of their time on Facebook. Some check their Facebook inbox, wall, or news feed before they check their email. Now with Facebook’s new messaging system and email addresses, even more will go to Facebook first. If the messaging stuff could be considered an assault on Google, this subtle move certainly could be as well.

I don’t have a number for how many people have Google set as their home page, but I’m guessing it’s a pretty big one. It’s about to get smaller. Facebook’s only going to give people more and more reasons to keep Facebook as their entry to the web as well. Wait until Facebook payments become a standard way of making payments around the web, as they are likely to do eventually.

Don’t be surprised if Google starts doing more to promote iGoogle, its customizable homepage, to stay in the forefront of users’ minds. They’re already doing more to promote Chrome, the company’s web browser, which is looking to be more and more a key component of Google’s overall strategy. What would happen if Facebook launched its own browser though? Rockmelt has essentially already done it for them (via Google’s own open source Chromium platform), but if Facebook promoted its own browser right from Facebook itself, that could be an incredible blow to Google as well.

You might say Facebook doesn’t need to own the browser, because its presence is felt nearly everywhere on the web anyway, but if Facebook were able to phase Chrome out of users’ experiences, that’s one less weapon Google has in competing for user attention.

But a lot of users’ web experience starts with search right? Well, Facebook is pretty tight with Bing. If Facebook were to launch its own browser, I wonder what the default web search option would be. Facebook has so far not indicated that it will launch a browser, but it is encouraging users to set Facebook as their home page, and Bing is the default web search there. Here, it’s going to be the on-page search competing with the browser search box (as well as Chrome’s omni-box). Bing might see a bump in search market share from this as well. The fact that users already have ways to search from their browser toolbars also decreases the need to have a search engine as a home page.

The bottom line is that Facebook users have a lot of reasons to set Facebook as their home page. Their friends and family are there. Their messages are there. Their news feed (from friends, as well as any brand/publications they "like") is there. For gamers, their games are there. Their photos and videos are there. They can update their status from there. Their events are there.

Will you set Facebook as your home page? Do you already have it set? Let us know in the comments.

What can you use the application for?

Ta-da is web application for making lists.

What is the history and popularity of the application?

Ta-da Lists is a product of 37signals, a firm founded by Jason Fried, Carlos Segura, and Ernest Kim.

What are the differences to other applications?

It is extremely simple, free, and can be shared. It works in most web browsers as well as on the iPhone.

How does the application look and feel to use?

Ta-da List is completely easy to use. It is clean, simple, and straightforward. Simply type in the name of the list and start adding items. When an item is completed or is no longer needed on the list, checking the box moves the item to an area below the list and reduces the print size. Lists may be edited, reordered, or shared. To share, users simply add the email addresses of those they wish to share with, or they can make their lists public with a link provided by the site.

How does the registration process work?

Registration requires a username, full name, email address, and password. Once entered, users are immediately directed to log in.

What does it cost to use the application?

Ta-da Lists is completely free of any fees.

Who would you recommend the application to?

This application may be used by anyone, from students to homemakers to executives to create lists for anything. The sharing option is particularly welcome for those who create lists that they wish to allow others to access.

What can you use the application for?

Gigbot is a website for listing and promoting events such as concerts.

What is the history and popularity of the application?

Gigbot was founded by Sean Porter in 2003. It was recently purchased by Ticketfly.

What are the differences to other applications?

Gigbot does its best to be cutting edge, funny, and hip. The problem with this is that it undermines the usability of the site. The About Us page yields some interesting photos and email addresses with the descriptors “making it pretty” and “speaking in code” which does not enlighten users at all. “How this Party Got Started” leads to a rambling story of finding a robot.

How does the application look and feel to use?

The application is clunky to use. Very limited results for test area entered even though there are several major venues in this location. Users may suggest venues.

Upon checking “Your Gigstream”, a suggestion to follow some people was made, but no directions were provided on how to do so.

Overall, the site is not user friendly, nor does it provide extensive listings for all areas.

How does the registration process work?

Users must provide a screen name, full name, password, email, and provide email preferences. Mobile phone number and personal website link are optional.
Account activation email is necessary to complete registration.

What does it cost to use the application?

The site is free to use, but venue owners can pay for a Pro membership. Pricing is available upon request.

Who would you recommend the application to?

This site is very difficult to use and has very limited listings. It is questionable whether people will find any useful information beyond the humor.

Once in a while I come across a site that becomes my daily pet peeve. There are certain things that you should do and shouldn’t do. I bet I’m guilty of some things that may piss you off but this post is personal to me. Obviously everyone’s different but these 5 crucial site trends really push my buttons. I don’t like it and you might have people like me that feel the same way.

1. You spam me -I signed up for your mailing list and I get nothing but products thrown in my face. I want real information, which is why I wanted to be included in your posse.

2. You leave me - I love reading your posts but when you fade away and not write for 30 days I question why am I still reading it.

3. I’m often dodging text links to read your posts – I don’t want to be playing a game of dodge ball on your site. I want to flow through your content!

4. I’m greeted by a box! Personally speaking, I hate when I visit a blog and a subscribe box pops up. I know it’s an effective way of capturing email addresses but I’m not diggin’ it.

5. You stole my ish! There’s nothing worse than visiting on of your favorite blogs and realize they stole your content. I don’t mind if one of my posts inspired you but when it’s word for word then we have a problem.

Note: I wrote this post before this site was hacked, so that is my excuse for being a culprit of #2.

This is a quick, 11-step WordPress set up guide. This article won’t teach you how to completely create your site but it is a good reminder of the simple starting steps everyone should take when they begin their WordPress journey.

1. Install WordPress: This is pretty self explanatory. The first step should be to install WordPress on your host. WordPress has a great guide to follow so this shouldn’t hold you up. Some webhosts even have something called Fantastico, if your hosts doe,s you are in luck! Fantastico will install WordPress automatically for you.

2. Login to your new site: Again self explanatory. The way I usually access my WordPress site is by adding a /wp-admin after my domain name in my web browsers address bar.

3. Make sure your email addresses are set: This is important because this is where you will get your updates and password if you ever lose it. There are two places to make sure your password is set. The first spot is in Settings->General. The other spot is in your Users menu – you will want to ensure your Admin email is correct.

4. Change your permalinks: I suggest this to all clients. In your Settings menu there is a Permalinks section. Open that menu and then choose your new style of permalinks. For the ultimate in clean URLs I suggest choosing custom structure and inserting the following string: /%postname%/. This will make the title of your posts be the web address.

5. Add your title and tagline: In General Settings once again add the name and tag line of your blog. The name is anything you want – keyword rich is best. The tagline is your site’s description.

6. Choose your theme: If you want to use a theme (you do) you can find a wide variety to choose by using your WordPress back office itself. Just navigate to Appearance->Themes and then use the tools they have to search for a theme. Once you find one to your liking download and activate it.

7. Install your plugins: Any plugins that you wish to add, do so now. Plugins are very flexible so you can add more later on if you discover one you need. Install whatever plugins you think you need. I would suggest that you definitely include All-in-One SEO and XML Google Sitemaps. They will both help with your SEO and each has fantastic support if you need to know more. I would also suggest Askimet but it comes installed already.

8. Activate askiment: I think this should be done as soon as possible. Askimet is a great spam blocking plugin that ensures your site isn’t full of spam comments. As soon as you start adding content you will notice the spam beginning. Askimet has a huge database of comment spam so it can usually pick up and block any on your site. If it does make a mistake then you can manually override it for a particular comment and it will actually learn from that. The one caveat to this is you have to get a WordPress API key. To get that API key you have to sign up for a free account on wordpress.com. Not a big deal, but an extra step you might not be aware of.

9. Check your privacy: In your Settings menu there is a Privacy heading. Click it and make sure your blog is visible to everyone. If it isn’t, Google will not index any of your content!

10. Add your widgets: Under Appearance there will be a Widgets menu. You can use this to add functionality to your WordPRess site using the sidebars. If you chose a widget ready theme (most are) you will have one or two sidebars (or more) on your site. In the widgets menu the sidebar will show up and you can drag and drop “widgets” into it. These widgets can be things like a search bar, an archive, a calendar, a recent posts list or a text/html box that you can put just about anything in. There are even more widgets than that available. There are even downloadable ones if the standard ones don’t do everything you need.

11. Create content: Now you can create some content! You can add pictures, galleries of those pictures, an about page etc… You can also start making posts – remember to create categories to keep them organized. Take advantage of the tag feature as that will come in handy when you have hundreds of posts. It helps with searches on your site as well.

That is the bare minimum to get started with WordPress. You will have to learn a lot more but when you do, you will be happy you made the move to WordPress. Happy blogging!

Application developers have created many clients for various social media websites. Most of these clients are targeting at the Facebook and Twitter community. From what I have observed, Twitter clients outnumber the Facebook clients; but Twitter clients often lack originality. Many of these clients are similar to each other and do not offer anything special. Even if they do offer something special, Twitter catches up and makes that ‘special’ feature a built-in Twitter feature.

Because of all that, a unique Twitter application is a rarity which is what makes TweetyMail such a wonderful find.

TweetyMail is a free to use Twitter client that offers what no other Twitter client offers and its features will not be implemented by Twitter any time soon. With TweetyMail, Twitter users can control their accounts via email. This means that to perform almost any task, all you have to do is send an email to an email address; to receive any Twitter messages or updates, all you will have to do is check your email.

After creating a TweetyMail account by linking our Twitter account, we are supposed to link a valid email address to TweetyMail.

We then use our linked email address to send email to email addresses. The email address we send the mails to changes according to the task we want to perform. These email addresses can be seen in the image below.

TweetyMail is a very convenient way to handle our Twitter account. People who are trying to access Twitter on networks that have blocked the site will find this Twitter client to very helpful.

Have you ever wondered how to broadcast live video through your cellphone? Imagine being able to share your phone camera’s image with the entire world. You could show the world whatever it is you were seeing in real time, and take sharing experiences to a new level.

You might have come across tools and services that provide live video sharing through your cellphone but these are mostly paid services. After reading about today’s tool however, you will not need to spend a penny to share live video. I am referring to Kocking Live Video.

Knocking Live Video is a free to use websites that enable live video sharing. We must first register for a free account before we can take advantage of the site’s services.

After registering for an account you add your friends and contacts on Knocking Live Video. New friends can be added by clicking on the “+” button. We can choose to invite users already on Knocking Live Video, invite users by specifying their email addresses, or have Knocking Live Video search our contacts in Gmail and Yahoo.

Once you have added your friends, the next step is to download and install Knocking Live Video’s application for your iPhone or Android device.

iPhone App Screenshots:

These applications will help broadcast live video through our cellphone’s camera. The uses we can put personal live broadcasting to are endless. Knocking Live Video’s versions for other cellphones (Blackberry, Symbian, Windows Mobile and Palm OS) are currently in development. When they have applications for all cellphones out, all smartphone users will be able to benefit from this remarkable free service.

What can you use the application for?

LetterMeLater gives users greater control over their ability to send emails and text messages. The concept allows busy people to stay better organized by getting more done sooner. Rather than wait until a specified date to send an important email reminder, greeting or message, Letter Me Later offers a way to schedule future send dates from your existing email address. Any kind of recurring messages can also be sent using Email Me Later’s scheduling features.

What is the history and popularity of the application?

Letter Me Later was launched in 2007. Early in the website’s life, many features were lacking. Users could send email messages without attachments. There were also severe limitations to managing messages and reviewing sent messages. Today, some of these features have been added and expanded upon. Although there is room to grow for Letter Me Later, users can now enjoy more flexibility.

What are the differences to other applications?

Providing users with greater email sending control makes Letter Me Later very appealing to private and business users. However, what truly makes this application stand out is the compatibility factor. New users do not have to change email addresses, instead they can continue using their existing email address and still utilize Letter Me Later features. Those receiving messages sent through this service have no idea the message was scheduled through a third party application, no advertisements or changes are added to emails.

How does the application look and feel to use?

The look of Letter Me Later is very basic. It lacks in bright colors or graphic intense flourishes. However, this lends itself well to the application’s purpose. Users can get logged in and easily begin using the application without wading through confusing ads. Click “compose” and begin creating a scheduled email. The required fields are very prominent which creates a no nonsense atmosphere for personal and business message sending.

How does the registration process work?

The registration process for Letter Me Later is simple. Just click the blue “sign up” button and enter your name, email, password and select your time zone. After verifying your email address, you can access all application features. Log in and start scheduling messages or create your contact list. Each step is very clearly marked with easy to find buttons. The registration information requested is minimal, which is a plus.

What does it cost to use the application?

Users have the option of a free Letter Me Later account or an upgraded account. The free account permits up to 30 emails sent per month, up to 10 recipients per email and a 2 MB file limit per email with up to 10 MB total per account. If you choose to pay the reasonable yearly upgrade fee, the number of emails is raised to 400, with an equal number of recipients per message permitted, 10 MB attachment limit and a total of 50 MB account limit for files. While the upgrade link is easy to locate, Letter Me Later does not force the upgrade on users. All features are accessible to a free account, with the limitations applied, of course.

Who would you recommend the application to?

Anyone who has ever sent a recurring email can really appreciate the service offered by Letter Me Later. Businesses can send monthly newsletters, scheduling them well in advance. Private users can also send updates or holiday greetings that arrive right on schedule. Frequent email users searching for a way to organize and simplify their monthly emailing will find this application beneficial as well. Letter Me Later also assists users in maintaining consistency when dealing with newsletters, updates or any kind of mass-messaging.

Email communication has not changed much in the past decade, but the amount of email we get daily has grown exponentially. Be it relevant communication or spam, the sheer volume of emails received impacts our email productivity. Inboxes are inundated with too many newsletters, product updates and countless other services that send emails adding tremendous noise to the conversation stream.

OtherInbox comes as a cure for email overload. The Otherinbox team has not reinvented the email infrastructure, but has created a web app that acts as a workaround for common email painpoints. In this review, we’ll take a look at how OtherInbox solves email overload by using multiple email addresses.

Overview

Unlike other email services, instead of giving a single email address OtherInbox lets you create multiple email addresses using your own subdomain (username.otherinbox.com). There is virtually no limit to the number of email IDs you can create with your subdomain. The best part is, you don’t have to create email addresses in advance from your OtherInbox control panel. You can create an email address on the fly, while signing up at a site. Cool isn’t it?

OtherInbox Home

Pricing

OtherInbox follows a freemium business model. The main difference between the free and premium service, is the free service only displays mails received in the past 30 days. If you want to be able to view all your messages, you’ll need to subscribe to the premium account which costs a nominal $19.99 annual. For business users, OtherInbox allows creation of up to 10 delegates per account and their mailing activity is reported back to the administrator via a daily summary.

Pricing

The sign up can be done in two ways. First, you can sign up by linking your existing Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail or AOL account and let OtherInbox organize the mail for you. The second option is creating an Otherinbox account without inbox analysis.

Inbox Analysis

To start, let’s proceed with the second sign up option. The sign up page is simple and straight forward.

Sign Up Page

After filling out the form, the account can be activated via the confirmation mail sent to the registered email address.

Confirm Email

Those who hate lengthy mail IDs can use the username.oib.com subdomain instead of username.otherinbox.com. Mail will be delivered without fail for both subdomains.

Creating Multiple Mail IDs

OtherInbox addresses can be used to sign up anywhere in the web. For example, let’s say that I am tempted by an offer from wemightspamyou.com and want to sign up for their newsletter. To avoid a possible spam blitzkrieg, I do not want to give out my real email address. Instead, I decide to register with the email address wemightspamyou@username.otherinbox.com

Multiple Email Ids

There is absolutely no need to create the wemightspamyou@username.otherinbox.com email address from your OtherInbox account beforehand. OtherInbox creates an email ID once it receives mail addressed to your subdomain. A folder is created in your OtherInbox account for each of the custom address, and all future conversations with that mail ID are stored in that folder.

Create Email IDs

OtherInbox lets you create an infinite number of mail IDs to keep your inbox more organized. You can use one email ID for signups, say signups@myusername.otherinbox.com or alternatively create an email ID for each website you are signing up like ebay@myusername.otherinbox.com, amazon@myusername.otherinbox.com and so on.

Multiple Email IDs

All common email operations like read, archive, search, delete and reply can be done on all the custom addresses from a control panel with a familiar Outlook-style layout. When you login to your OtherInbox account, it features folders from every site you signed up with multiple addresses in the left pane. To read mails from a particular address, simply click on the respective folder and you can view/read all emails sent to that address.

No Filters

All this is possible without creating filters or even without logging into the OtherInbox account ahead of creating the email IDs. Sign-ups, newsletters, promotions, alerts, and personal mail can all be filtered, managed and grouped by OtherInbox in their own sweet little email IDs.

Stopping Spam

If a mail address is flooded with spam as suspected, all you have to do is to click the “Block All” button and that address is disabled completely. You will not receive mail from that particular address again. However as an after thought, if you want to receive mails from that address, you have the option to re-enable that inbox again.

Block Spam

Importing Mail From Other Accounts

To further enhance email productivity, OtherInbox can also import messages from any IMAP enabled email account and help in organizing the imported mails like newsletters, receipts, coupons, etc. Currently, there doesn’t seem to be a limit on the number of emails that can be saved in your OtherInbox account.

Organizing emails from another mail ID can be done while creating the account or from the settings menu after signing up, at your convenience.

Importing Email

Choose the mail service from the left panel, enter the login credentials and the import process will begin. OtherInbox takes a few minutes to import and organize all the mail. The entire process runs in the background (server side) and you will receive an email once the import is complete.

Email Scan

Once the import is complete, mail is grouped into their respective folders, eliminating noise from your conversation.

Email Grouping

Settings

OtherInbox lets you tweak the account from the settings page. All the mail can be exported from the settings page in plain text format for archiving. For those of us who prefer to use their own domain instead of a generic subdomain, that option comes with a premium subscription.

Email Export

Messages via RSS Feed

OtherInbox has additional options to auto-forward all incoming mail to another email address and to read your mails via RSS feeds. You can create an RSS feed for the entire OtherInbox account or for unread, saved and deleted messages.

Notifications

In addition, digests of the account can be scheduled at various intervals from the settings page.

Final Thoughts

OtherInbox promises to “Put your email on autopilot”. So confident with their promise OtherInbox has gone ahead and trademarked that tagline. After using the service for almost a year now, I’ve found that claim to be very true. I am reading only the mail I actually want to read. Gone are the days when I had to click the “Report as Spam” button multiple times a day. OtherInbox mailboxes are ad free and have encryption (https) turned on by default. For the rich set of features it offers, Otherinbox premium is a steal for less than two dollars a month.

Not being able to read mail that is more than 30 days old does irk me at times, but that problem can be solved with a premium subscription. After many months of using the service, I am surprised at the serious lack of new features. However wonderful the app may be, OtherInbox needs to push forward with newer features to keep the service going. I’m giving a 8/10 to Otherinbox with a strong nudge to incorporate new features.

Email signatures are so easy to do well, that it’s really a shame how often they’re done poorly. Many people want their signature to reflect their personality, provide pertinent information and more, but they can easily go overboard. Why are email signatures important? They may be boring and the last item on your list of things to get right, but they affect the tone of every email you write.

Email signatures contain alternative contact details, pertinent job titles and company names, which help the recipient get in touch when emails are not responded to. Sometimes, they give the recipient an idea of who wrote the email in case it has been a while since they have been in touch. They are also professional: like a letterhead, they show that you run a business (in some countries, you’re required to do so). Here are some tips on how to create a tasteful signature that works.

[Offtopic: by the way, did you already get your copy of the brand new Smashing Book?]

Be Concise

First and foremost, the sender’s header (the “From” field) should have a name, and you should use a company email address if you can. If someone sees stevies747@hotmail.com, they’ll suspect it’s spam. If the sender’s header reads, “Steve Stevenson – Mister Stevenson Design Company” <steve@misterstevenson.com>, they’ll know it’s a professional email from Steve, their trusted designer.

Start by making your website a link. Many email clients convert email addresses and websites into links automatically, but not always. When you’re creating the HTML for an email, make sure the link will appear by adding writing it in HTML. And instead of linking text like “My website,” type out the URL, which will be useful for those who want to copy and paste the address.

An email signature shouldn’t double the email’s length, so make it as short as possible (three lines is usually enough). Don’t get into your life story here. The purpose of a signature is to let them see who you are and how to get in touch with you.

Make Sure to Include…

Your name,

Your company and position,

How to get in touch with you.

No need to include 10 different ways to get in touch with you. As in website design, less is more; and then they’ll know which way you prefer to be contacted. Go to two or three lines, with a maximum of 72 character per line (many email applications have a maximum width of 80 characters, so limit the length to avoid unsightly wrapping). An optional fourth line could be your company address, but use caution if you work from home.

Short and Concise, but Check the Rules

In some European countries, laws dictate what items you must put in your email signature if you are a registered company. For example, UK law requires private and public limited companies to include the following:

Company number,

Address of registration,

VAT number, if there is one.

You can be fined for not including this information on all electronic correspondence and on your website and stationary. Many freelancers and small businesses have ignored these rules since their inception, risking a fine. For more information on UK rules, go here. Do some research to find out what rules apply in your country.

55 Main Street, London, UK, EC2A 1RE
Company number: 12345678

Don’t Include…

Personal Twitter, IM or Skype details;

Your home phone number or address (unless you want to be called by international clients early in the early);

The URL of your personal website;

Random quotes at the bottom;

Your entire skill set, CV and lifetime achievements in point form.

Random quotes are fun for friends, but you risk offending business associates with whom you don’t have a personal relationship. Unless you want clients contacting you while you’re watching Lost, don’t share your home details far and wide. Also, don’t share your personal contact information with your corporate partners. They certainly won’t be interested in it, and you may not want them to know certain details about you. However, mentioning your corporate Twitter account or alternative means of contact in your signature might be useful, in case your correspondent is not able to get in touch with you by regular email.

Don’t do this.

Images And Logos

Let’s get this out of the way now: your entire signature shouldn’t be an image. Sure, it will look exactly how you want, but it is completely impractical. Not only does an image increase the email’s file size, but it will likely be blocked before being opened. And how does someone copy information from an image?

This signature is too big at 20 KB and impossible to copy.

Any images should be used with care and attention. If you do use one, make it small in both dimensions and size, and make it fit in aesthetically with the rest of the signature. 50 x 50 pixels should be plenty big for any logo. If you want to be taken seriously as a business person, do not make it an animated picture, dancing dog or shooting rainbow!

Most email clients store images as attachments or block them by default. So, if you present your signature as an image, your correspondents will have a hard time guessing when you’ve sent a genuine attachment.

The best way to include an image is to host it on a server somewhere and then use the absolute URL to insert the logo. For example, upload the logo to
http://www.example.com/uploads/logo.gif
. And then, in your email signature’s HTML, insert the image like so:

<img src="http://www.example.com/uploads/logo.gif" width="300" height="250" alt="example's logo" />

Don’t Be A Fancy Pants

Use vCards With Caution

While vCards are a great, convenient way to share contact information, in emails they add bytes and appear as attachments. It is often said that you shouldn’t use a vCard for your email signature, because as helpful as it might be the first time you correspond with someone, receiving it every time after that gets annoying. Besides, the average email user won’t know what it is. Look at the example below. Would an average user know what that is?

---
Steve Stevenson, Web Designer
www.misterstevenson.com | steve@misterstevenson.com

If you do want to provide a vCard, just include a link to a remote copy.

What About Confidentiality Clauses?

If your emails include confidential information, you may need to include a non-disclosure agreement to prevent information leaks. However, good practice is never to send sensitive information as plain text in emails because the information could be extracted by third parties or forwarded by recipients to other people. Thus, including a non-disclosure agreement doesn’t make much sense if you do not send sensitive information anyway.

Keep in mind, too, that the longer a confidentiality clause is, the more unlikely someone will actually read it. Again, check your country’s privacy laws. Some big companies require a disclosure with every email, but if you’re at a small company or are a freelancer and don’t really require it, then don’t put it in. The length of such clauses can be annoying, especially in short emails.

Don’t Be Afraid to Show Some Personality

Although your email signature should be concise and memorable, it doesn’t have to be boring. Feel free to make your email signature stand out by polishing it with your creative design ideas or your personal touch. Using a warm greeting, adding a cheeky key as Dan Rubin does or encouraging people to “stalk” you as Paddy Donnelly does, all show personality behind simple text.

The key to a simple, memorable and beautiful email signature lies in balancing personal data and your contact details. In fact, some designers have quite original email signatures; most of the time, simple ASCII is enough.

HTML?

If you can, stay away from HTML formatting. Every Web designer knows the pain of HTML newsletters, and while HTML is supported for email signatures, you’ll likely have problems with images and divider lines in different email clients. Some nice ASCII formatting may work in some cases.

Of course, if you’re really keen to use HTML, keep it simple:

Make sure it still looks good in plain text.

Use black and standard-sized fonts, and stay away from big, tiny and rainbow-colored fonts.

Don’t use CSS. Inline HTML formatting is universally accepted.

Use common Web fonts.

Including a logo? Make sure the signature looks nice even when the logo doesn’t load or is blocked.

Check how it looks when forwarded. Do all the lines wrap correctly?

You may want to load your company image as your gravatar from Gravatar.com as Joost de Valk does.

Feel free to experiemnt with your e-mail signature: Jan Diblík uses a signature with dynamicaly changed promo image.

Separate Signature From Content

Your signature should clearly be a separate entity. Wikipedia explains the correct way to separate the signature:

“The formatting of the sig block is prescribed somewhat more firmly: it should be displayed as plain text in a fixed-width font (no HTML, images, or other rich text), and must be delimited from the body of the message by a single line consisting of exactly two hyphens, followed by a space, followed by the end of line (i.e., “– \n”). This … allows software to automatically mark or remove the sig block as the receiver desires.”

There are other less standard ways to separate your signature. While not automatic formatting, a line of —–, ======, or _______ or even just a few spaces will visually separate your signature from your email.

Wrestling With Your Email Client

Offering general advice on signatures is easy, sure. But anyone who has tried to implement automatic signatures in Outlook, Gmail or Yahoo knows it’s not always that simple. Here are some resources to help you get yours right every time.

Outlook
Changing Outlook’s signature is a real pain, but here’s a guide that teaches you a few things. If you use Outlook 2003, here’s another tutorial on custom signatures.

Gmail
Want just one basic signature? Here’s how to change the text. You’d think Google would allow you multiple signatures, links and a bit of formatting. If you’re looking for something a little more designed or wish to choose between multiple signatures, here are five ways to do it in Firefox.

Hotmail
Tips on custom images and more for Hotmail (Oh my!) can be found here. If you use Windows Live, here is a tutorial on adding images and HTML. The detail is helpful, even if the images are awful.

Yahoo
After a bit of research, I found that Yahoo used to support HTML signatures, but no longer. Here’s how to change your signature using rich text.

Apple Mail
Here is a pretty decent tutorial, with some inline HTML for formatting. It then explains how to implement it in the application. You even get some hints on how it will look on the iPhone.

Palm Pre
Learn how to customize your message on your Palm Pre here.

iPhone
Customize your “Sent from my iPhone” message here.

BlackBerry
Some information on how to change your message on BlackBerry smartphones here.

Now, the company is releasing a feature that turns group blogging into something you can manage right from your inbox. Whether you have an email list or group blog that is for private, public, or for the family, you can now not only post to Posterous via email, but also get instant notifications and add comments without ever leaving your inbox.

Not ready to create a Posterous account? That’s okay. You can test out the features by sending an email to post@posterous.com, adding whatever content you want (the subject line becomes the title, while text, images, and video are the body), and hitting send. Posterous will create your blog and email you back with confirmation and a link to view.

To add contributors, you’ll need to claim your Posterous site, click to edit it, and then input their email addresses. Once you add them, they won’t need an account to contribute to the group blog and can accomplish everything — posting, viewing, and comments — via email. The group blog/email list can be password protected or public. Should you wish to share content and comments without posting publicly, that can be accomplished by emailing private@yourblog.posterous.com.

Even though email may seem like a step backwards in terms of innovation, the new Posterous functionality actually creates a workflow that’s convenient and not labor intensive. We see this as being a big win for family and friends who create email lists to share content, for remote teams to collaborate and share multimedia content, for group mailing lists, and for dead simple blogging with other other contributors.

Now that Google is putting Google Profiles in search results, you might want to consider getting verified. You have to go through a process to do this however.

"Should you get a verified name? Right now, it doesn’t influence whether your profile will rank better in profile results," says Danny Sullivan at Search Engine Land. "But if you’re trying to convince people to trust that the page is really controlled by you, it probably makes sense."

Danny has a great article up looking at the ins and outs of Google Profiles, where he also discusses verification. Barry Schwartz at Search Engine Roundtable however puts it into an easier step-by-step format:

1. You must go to Google’s Knol site and sign in.
2. Then go to your profile settings.
3. Click on the "Name Verification" tab
4. Then choose to verify by phone or via credit card

So basically, you’re not getting verified without giving up a little personal info, which should be a hot topic among those people who frequently criticize Google on privacy. Still, they’ve got to make sure it’s really you one way or another don’t they? And it’s not like you have to get verified.

I have not done this, and my profile is the only one showing up in a search for my name at this point, so I’m not too worried about it. That may change in the future, but for now, I’m good.

You can still verify other email addresses with your Google account right from your profile (no going to Knol or anything). When you go to edit your profile, you’ll see a link for "verify an email address" in the middle of the page under the "Verified Domains" heading. However, if you have an email address that is associated with a different Google account, you will be unable to verify it.

Article writing is a skill that most people can learn, and if you know how to promote your home business by writing articles, then article marketing can be an effective way to make money. However, most people do not know how to write in such a fashion as to maintain the readers interest, and have an even less idea of how to properly use those that they do write.

Writing articles is a skill – that cannot be denied – but it is a skill that can be learned. Sure, you will need a reasonable grasp of grammar in your language, but not so much spelling if you use a good spell checker. It is not these that are the problem, as much as knowledge of how to write the content in such a way as to be of use to the reader.

Therefore, let’s consider the reader and what they are seeking when they find your article.

1. Information

People use the internet for information, to chat or to buy something, and by far the most extensive of these is information. The vast majority of people that use Google are seeking information of one kind or another. It could be a price, it could be technical information or even what time the next bus is due, but it is information and most of that is the type of information that you can provide them with by writing an article on their topic.

You might have website focusing on the niche, or simply write an article on it with a link to an affiliate product. In the latter you can make money without having a product or even a website, and in the former you have a means of collecting names and email addresses that you can use to keep in touch with people that have expressed an interest in your niche.

2. There is No 2

That’s right – there is no 2 that concerns you. People want information, pure and simple, and you can provide it to them either with a well constructed website that you advertise using article marketing, or with a well written article, offering good and accurate information about their subject, and that in their eyes will make you an expert in their subject. That’s right – their subject. It isn’t yours, but theirs, and you are providing information to them on their subject by writing articles on it.

Article writing is more than just knocking out a few quick essays, but involves good keyword research, time in providing useful informing of a type that people are genuinely seeking and also perhaps contains an element of the benefits a prospect can achieve by reading it.

How to Write Articles

There has to be a benefit for the reader, or there will be no incentive to read it. That benefit must be stressed in the title of the article: the first part of the article that anybody sees, and the part that will head your Google listing, or that of any other search engine. This confuses many people, but if you submit your articles to article directories, and your article is approved for publication, then it will appear on its own web page, and can be spidered and listed on search engines just like any other web page.

The title will be the heading for the listing, and your summary, or the first few words of the article, the summary that appears below the title in the listing. Visitors seeking information, using the keywords that appear in your title and article, will be offered your article to click, and hence the importance of a compelling title.

Use your main keyword early (main is ‘article writing’, and other main keywords in the rest – in my title I have managed to include: article writing, how to promote your home business, home business, make money, article marketing, money from article marketing

You expand on the theme of the title in the introductory paragraph, including the main keyword within the first 100 characters, and then write the article itself. Use keywords sparingly (once each 300 words), and use vocabulary that explains and defines the main keyword. Use a sparse sprinkling of the other keywords used in the title.

Overuse of keywords will result in your article being dropped from the listings, because Google’s purpose is to provide Google customers with good solid content, and not keyword repetition. Keep Google happy and you will be rewarded.

Most reward is in the form of high search engine listings for your keyword and lots of visitors. However, this can easily be transferred into cash if you have a good monetizing system operating on your website. You might be using Google Adsense adverts, selling affiliate products or offering a service, but traffic is what brings sales and writing articles brings the traffic.

As to the mechanics of article writing – well, let’s just refer to that as a different topic, since it would take more than one simple article to teach you article marketing, and the effective use of articles to advertise your website or product. Articles can be use to promote your home business, and you can also make money from article marketing if you understand how to do so.
