According to Millennial, iOS impressions grew 18% quarter-over-quarter, whereas Android impressions grew 11% quarter-over-quarter. RIM impressions grew 29% quarter-over-quarter, Symbian impressions grew 13% quarter-over-quarter, and Windows Phone 7 impressions grew 31% quarter-over-quarter. In fact, according to Millennial’s data, Android saw the slowest growth out of all the smartphone platforms for mobile ad impressions.

Millennial frequently takes a look at app development ranked by revenue on the network and in Q2, Android represented 41% of the Application Platform Mix, a 14% increase from quarter-to-quarter. iOS represented 49% of the app, and grew 12% quarter-over-quarter.

By impression share, Android remained the leading OS on the network for the 7th consecutive month with a 54% impression share (but this was the same share as May), followed by iOS with a 26% impression share in June. RIM had 15% impression share, with Symbian and Windows Phone 7 trailing with 3% and 2% share, respectively.

The iPhone continued to dominate Millennial’s network in June as the top mobile phone on the ad network with a 16% impression share in June. The closest Android phone was the original Motorola Droid at 2.95%. But the Android platform also had 16 of the top 20 mobile phones.

By manufacturer Apple took the lead, representing 30% of the Top 15 Manufacturers impression share
Samsung followed as number two manufacturer for the fifth consecutive month. In June, the Samsung Nexus S impressions more than doubled month-over-month and moved to the number four position on the Top 20 Mobile Phones ranking.

Smartphones made up 65% of all impressions on Millennial, and connected devices grew 13% month-over-month, and accounted for 18% of all impressions.

It’s certainly interesting to see that Android’s growth is slowing. And that iOS is picking up. We’ll see if that trend continues into July and the third quarter.

As for Millennial, it’s unclear whether the company, which is the largest independent mobile ad network remaining, will become a public company or will be acquired. The company raised $27.5 million in new funding a year ago, and is considering an IPO in the near future. Considering the growing number of tech companies going down that road, it’s certainly the right time for an IPO.

Verizon has put up Droid 3, the grandchild of Motorola’s legendary Droid smartphone, up for sale on its website.

The Droid 3 sports a 1 GHz dual-core CPU, a 4-inch qHD (960 x 540 pixel) screen, an 8-megapixel camera and a slide-out, full QWERTY keyboard.

It runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread and offers 16 GB of storage, as well as all the other standard bells and whistles that adorn the Android smartphones of today, including Bluetooth 2.1, Wi-Fi, UMTS and aGPS support.

The device costs $199 with a two-year contract on one of Verizon’s new data plans. It is also available contact-free for $459.

What It’s Good For: Surfing the web, making phone calls, listening to music, taking photos and playing games.

Who It’s Good For: Verizon users who want a robust, lightweight phone that delivers screaming 4G LTE speeds.

Limitations: The battery life is disappointing — definitely don’t leave home without a charger. Plus, the device is expensive, especially for a single-core smartphone.

Bottom Line: The Droid Charge might not be the best specced phone on the market, but paired with Verizon’s 4G LTE network, it has some of the best data speeds we’ve seen. This is another contender in a growing cadre of great Android handsets.

A Closer Look at the Droid Charge by Samsung

The Droid Charge is Verizon’s second 4G LTE handset, following the similarly specced HTC Thunderbolt. The phone ships with Android 2.2 Froyo and includes Adobe Flash Player 10.3.

It features a 1GHz processor, 32GB of storage space (microSD) and a 4.3″ AMOLED Plus display. The rear camera is 8 megapixels and records video in 720p, and the front camera is 1.3 megapixels. The phone is thin and weighs about five ounces.

As more dual-core smartphones start to enter the market, we can’t help but wish the Droid Charge took advantage of those faster chipsets, a la the Galaxy S II. Still, even running Froyo and at 1GHz, the Droid Charge was speedy and responsive in our tests.

Samsung TouchWiz UI isn’t going to be for everyone, but we didn’t mind the alterations it made to the stock Android interface. The Samsung widgets didn’t do much for us, but a few of the Verizon-specific widgets, including a bandwidth monitor, were quite handy.

When it comes to the Droid Charge, the real story is about the network. We tested the device all over New York City and were impressed to find we had access to 4G LTE speeds more often than not. 4G LTE trounces everyone else in the bandwidth game, and in our speed tests, we frequently got speeds that exceeded not only our office broadband Internet, but even our home connections.

The speed is so good, our only fear was exceeding bandwidth limitations on the device. Our test plan included unlimited data but we blew through 3GB of bandwidth in just a few days of hardcore testing. When the speeds are that fast — consistently in the 15 Mbps range — it’s easy to use a lot of data.

The Droid Charge comes with a built-in hotspot feature that lets users share the 4G LTE data connection with up to 10 other devices. Users can set-up a USB, Wi-Fi or Bluetooth connection. The hotspot setup process was a snap and we were quickly able to share data with our laptop, iPad and other devices. Tethering with a cell phone is often a subpar Internet experience, but Verizon’s network was so fast, it was no different than using any other Wi-Fi connection.

Of course, the price of all that speed is in battery life. The Droid Charge consistently died on us around the 6 hour mark, and even when in standby mode, the device just eats battery power. My year-old iPhone 4 (which needs a new battery) consistently outlasted the Droid Charge, even when the Charge wasn’t in use and the iPhone was.

The camera — both video and still — aren’t anything spectacular, but it does take serviceable photos and video.

At the end of the day, the Droid Charge isn’t really about the phone specs or features, it’s about the network and the data speeds. On that front, the phone bests the competition. If you’re looking for a phone that can double as a 4G LTE MiFi, look no further.

Homescreens

The Droid Charge uses Samsung’s TouchWiz UI. While we’re partial to stock Android, we don’t have a problem with the Samsung interface at all. It’s clean and easy to navigate.

As you can see, LTE absolutely trounces Cablevision’s 30Mbps Internet package. This particular speed test was an anomaly; we rarely saw speeds this fast, but it shows the power of the network.

This screenshot shows a history of various speed tests we took at different points in time. With one exception, the LTE speed tests always exceeded 10Mbps.

In comparison, 3G speeds using the same Verizon network never got above 2Mbps.

Camera Test

The 8 megapixel rear camera on the device is serviceable, if not overly impressive.

The Samsung software allows for extended options like scene modes and white balance settings, but every shot we took had an aquamarine hue.

Motorola has released the Droid X2, Verizon’s first dual-core smartphone. Although it looks similar to its Motorola Droid predecessor, it’s been improved with a higher-resolution 4.3-inch screen and a 1GHz NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor. Let’s put it to the test.

Taking the Droid X2 out of the box, I was impressed with its slim and light form factor. Starting it up for the first time, I could see its saturated colors filled the 960×540 screen in a resolution otherwise known as quarter HD or qHD. But even though the screen’s resolution is 20% higher than its Droid predecessor, it’s still not quite as sharp and vibrant as some of the OLED screens we’ve seen.

The Good

The speediness of the dual-core Tegra 2 processor makes everything happen noticeably faster and smoother. Apps launch faster, games play smoother, multitasking works better — but the most pleasing improvement is the smoother-scrolling screens, a joy to behold.

Another benefit of that increased horsepower is quicker camera response than previous models. Now you can start up the camera and take a picture in three seconds, and it stores those pictures quickly, letting you take another picture in slightly less than three seconds.

Shooting pictures and video with the Droid X2′s 8-megapixel camera resulted in well-focused, correctly exposed and colorful stills. See the gallery below for an example.

The Bad

The Droid X2′s 720p video recording was not quite perfect in testing. When I subjected the video camera to wide variations in light levels, it dropped frames. This shouldn’t happen with a 1GHz dual core processor on board.

What else is missing? There’s no front-facing camera for videoconferencing. And there’s no sign of Verizon’s much-vaunted 4G LTE network, because this phone doesn’t handle that. Supposedly the LTE baseband radio chip is not compatible with the Nvidia Tegra 2 processor, so we’ll have to wait for a dual-core LTE phone on Verizon.

The Droid X2 is running Android 2.2 (and reportedly soon to be updated to 2.3). Android 2.2 is starting to feel old, especially after we’ve been testing Android tablets with Honeycomb 3.1.

The Ugly

The phone’s 5.4 oz weight makes it easy to handle, but it also makes this mostly plastic object feel dime-store cheap. The X2′s overall impression is that of a utilitarian handset that was slapped together without regard to design. It looks and feels like a disposable slab with four cheap buttons across the bottom, topped by an overly obtrusive Verizon logo.

Like many Android smartphones, the back ramps up to a sloping chin with the camera on top. And that side of the phone is festooned with no less than four logos, reminiscent of a NASCAR driver’s fire suit. If you’re looking for high style, you’re certainly not going to get it with this smartphone.

The Verdict

Those quibbles aside, the highlight of the Droid X2 is its snappy response. Even though its design is nothing groundbreaking, its performance is excellent. But that performance is out of sync with its old-style 3G connectivity and doesn’t make sense. If all you do is text, its 3G service will suffice, but if you want to do more than that, you might want to wait until a 4G version is available.

Verizon is expanding its smartphone roster in a big way today, with the introduction of four new devices: LG Revolution, Xperia Play, HTC Trophy and Motorola Droid X2.

The LG Revolution‘s claim to fame is LTE-capability, which makes it the faster device in this bunch as far as data transfer speeds go. Other than that, it’s a mid-to-high range Android smartphone with a 4.3-inch, 800×480 pixel screen, single-core 1 GHz Snapdragon CPU, a 5-megapixel back camera and a 1.3-megapixel front one for video calls and 16 GB of storage memory.

The Droid X2 is a more powerful beast with a dual-core 1 GHz CPU, and 8-megapixel back camera, and a 4.3 inch, 960 x 540 display. The lack of LTE makes it $50 cheaper than the LG revolution, though: it costs $199 with a two-year contract with Verizon.

The HTC Trophy is a fairly standard Windows Phone 7 device, with a 3.8-inch, 480×800 pixel display, a 1 GHz Snapdragon CPU, a 5-megapixel back camera, 16 GB of storage memory, all of which makes it the cheapest device in this bunch – it goes for $149 with a two-year contract.

Finally, the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play, as the only phone to bear the PlayStation mark, has the distinction of being made for gaming, while otherwise it’s another Android with a 4-inch, 480×854 display, 1 GHz CPU (with an additional Adreno 205 GPU to power all that graphics-intensive games), and an 8 GB pre-installed memory card. It will set you back $199 with a two-year contract.

In the first three parts of this series, we covered a lot of information about the anatomy of a typeface, and what kinds of things to look for when actually combining two fonts. Here, we’ll tie it all together.

Below are guidelines for combining fonts for paragraphs and headlines, as well as for other common type elements, like pull quotes and by-lines.

Headlines and Paragraphs

The headline and paragraph are two of the most basic building blocks of the typography of a design. In some cases, a heading and paragraph may be the only kinds of typographic information present in a design. Because of this, they’re often given great precedence in the design process.

So let’s start with these two elements, and we’ll expand from there. Here are some examples of effective typeface combinations, starting with the least difficult.

The absolute simplest way to create a headline/paragraph combination is to use the same typeface for both, but with different weights and sizes. Here, we’ve combined Adobe Caslon: Regular for the paragraph copy and Bold for the headline. It’s simple and formal, but can be a bit boring.

The next easiest is to select fonts from the same family. Here we have Fontin Bold for the headline and Fontin Sans for the paragraph copy. Again, change around the weight and size to get better contrast. There are a lot of typeface families that include both serif and sans serif typefaces, including Droid Sans and Droid Serif, and Museo and Museo Sans.

Probably the most common method of combining typefaces is to pair a serif with a sans-serif. In print design, serifs are generally used for the body copy, while sans-serifs are used as headlines. The opposite is more generally true online, though both can work in either setting. Here, we’ve combined Lucida Sans for the headline with Crimson Text for the paragraph copy.

Here we’ve combined Rockwell Bold for the headline and Gill Sans for the paragraph type. Both of these typefaces have a basis in geometric shapes, and therefore they work well together. If you look at the letter “o” especially, you’ll see that in both typefaces, it’s almost a perfect circle (the same is true for the bowls of the letters in both).

Both the typefaces here are clean and modern. The headline is SF New Republic SC and the paragraph is Hero Light.

Here’s another set with a similar mood and style, this time old-fashioned or antique. The headline is Tagettes and the paragraph copy is Goudy Bookletter 1911.

Mixing a strong typeface with a more neutral one can also be a great technique, especially on the web. Here, we have Dancing Script for the headline and Georgia for the paragraph copy.

The trickiest typeface combination technique is probably creating a combination from two radically different typefaces. It’s tricky because it’s so easy to go wrong. Just because two typefaces are radically different doesn’t mean they’ll automatically work together. And when one of those typefaces also needs to be legible as paragraph text, it makes things that much more difficult.

The example above combines Tallys for the paragraph copy with DayPosterBlack for the headline. Tallys is a decidedly traditional-looking typeface, with a fairly light stroke weight. DayPosterBlack, by contrast, is a strong, modern, almost sci-fi-looking typeface.

This is one of those techniques that’s best achieved through simple trial-and-error. Try out a bunch of different combinations and see which ones look good together. You may have to try out a dozen or more combinations before you find one that works well because of it’s contrast.

Beyond Headlines and Paragraphs

Headlines and paragraphs, while important, are only one small part of a lot of designs, especially blogs and news sites. Below are a few more types of typographic elements you may find yourself using.

Pull-Quotes

With pull quotes, there are a couple of different options. First, you can simply use the body copy typeface for your pull quotes, but in a larger size, and possibly a different weight:

It doesn’t look bad, but it’s also kind of boring having both the paragraph and pull quote in Times.

Another option is to use the headline typeface, in this case Dancing Script, for your pull quote. This is more interesting, and definitely draws more attention to the pull quote, but it’s not going to work in every situation. As a general rule, the more decorative your headline font, the worse it will work for pull quotes. You can get away with a script, but anything more decorative than that isn’t going to look right.

The other options with pull quotes is to use a typeface completely different from your headline and paragraph choices. In this case, we’ve used Anivers for the pull quote, Times for the paragraph, and Dancing Script for the headline. Consider the guidelines for combining paragraph and headline typefaces, and use the same general guidelines. In this case, since the paragraph text is a serif and the headline is a script, it made sense to use a sans-serif for the pull quote. Using a weight for the pull quote that’s roughly the same as the weight for the headline helps tie everything together.

Meta Information

Meta information is going to be found on virtually every blog or news site out there. This includes things like the category or tag information, the time the article was posted, and other similar information. Sometimes, it also includes the by-line of the author. Again, there are a couple of different ways to approach the typography for this kind of information.

The first thing you need to remember, though, is that meta information is usually displayed quite small, and sometimes in a lighter color. This rules out a large number of potential typeface choices, as you need something that’s legible at an 8 or 10 point size.

The first option is to use the same typeface you’ve used for your body copy, but in a slightly smaller size and/or a lighter color. Here, both the body copy and the meta information are Crimson.

Another option is to use a very neutral typeface, like Helvetica, for your meta copy. This choice is especially good if your body text isn’t highly legible at small sizes.

Captions

Photo captions should be treated much like meta information. Generally, the type used to caption images is small and sometimes in a lighter color than the body text. In a lot of cases, it’s included within the image border.

Again, you basically have two options for photo captions: you can use the same typeface as your body copy, or you can use a different face. If your captions are going to be very small, legibility may make the decision for you.

For example, look at the captions on the images above. Both are in 11pt, regular weight fonts. The top caption is in Tallys, a common typeface for body copy, which isn’t particularly legible in this instance unless you squint. The bottom caption, by contrast, is in Helvetica, and is significantly more legible.

Examples

Whether you’re combining two typefaces or eight, the same principles apply. You need to find typefaces with some kind of shared characteristics (except when using radical contrast) so that they work well together. Here are some examples of websites that have done just that.

Elysium Burns

Elysium Burns uses a combination of serif and sans serif typefaces, as well as a variety of styles (including all caps).

Good Magazine

Good Magazine also uses a combination of serif and sans serif typefaces, including Georgia for the body text and Arial for navigation and meta information.

Viget Inspire

The Viget Inspire blog uses a combination of sans serif and serif typefaces. Constantina (with Georgia as the primary alternate) is used for headings, while Georgia and Verdana are used for meta information. Body copy on the blog is Verdana.

The Morning News

The Morning News uses Georgia for their headlines and Arial for body copy. They use a variety of weights and styles (including italics and all caps) to set apart different kinds of copy.

The New Yorker

The New Yorker uses their own typeface for article headlines, and Times New Roman for body copy. Meta information and some navigation is set in Arial.

A List Apart

A List Apart uses Georgia for their headlines and navigation, and Verdana for body copy. For by-lines and meta information, they use a combination of Verdana and Times.

Design Wise

Design Wise uses various weights of a slab serif typeface for all of their typography.

Quipsologies

Quipsologies uses a variety of custom fonts for their headlines (p22-underground-pc-1 and coquette-1 most prominently). They also use custom fonts for body text (mostly p22-underground-1 and skolar-1). It’s a bold choice, made possible by web fonts.

sr28

sr28 uses Georgia for headlines and Arial for body text.

I Love Typography

I Love Typography uses web fonts from the same family for their typography, including ff-scala-sans-web-1 for their headlines and meta information, and ff-scala-web-1 for their body copy.

Burciaga

Laura Burciaga’s blog uses a combination of three primary typefaces: Dancing Script (for headlines), Droid Serif (for meta information), and Georgia (for most of the body copy). Combining two serifs is tricky, but it’s done really well here.

Black Harbor

Black Harbor uses Georgia for body copy and KnockoutHTF48-Featherweight for the headlines and navigation.

The Dollar Dreadful

The Dollar Dreadful uses a huge number of retro-styled typefaces for their headlines. Their body font is Georgia.

Matt Bango

Matt Bango uses a mix of Georgia and Helvetica, as well as another serif typeface (with Flash replacement).

Kari Jobe

Kari Jobe’s site uses a variety of typefaces, including Courier New for the body copy. Most of the typography on the site is done with images rather than web fonts.

Design Intellection

Design Intellection uses a variety of weights and styles of Proxima Nova, as well as a bit of Georgia (for block quotes).

The Old State

The bulk of the typography on The Old State is Georgia, though there’s a thin slab serif also used for the navigation and logo.

Poems Out Loud

Poems Out Loud uses Baskerville as their primary typeface for both headings and body copy (with Times as the secondary font). There’s also limited use of Helvetica Neue for navigation.

A Word on Web vs. Print

There’s a lot of conflict surrounding the best practices for typography on the Web when compared to print. In print, longstanding wisdom has pointed toward using serif typefaces for body copy and sans-serifs for headlines. On the web, the opposite is often touted as gospel: sans-serif body copy and serif headlines.

The truth of the matter is that both serif and sans serif typefaces can be perfectly readable both onscreen and in print. It’s all dependant on proper contrast and sizing. Some typefaces are designed to work well at small sizes (mostly by “hinting”), while others are not.

One general rule of thumb for optimal readability, though, is that slightly larger type works better onscreen. This is partly to do with resolution: printed materials are generally printed at 300 dots per inch and up. Screen resolution, though, is generally around 96 points per inch. Because fewer pixels/dots are used to make up the letterforms, they’re slightly less crisp onscreen than they are when printed. By making a type slightly larger, you’re using more pixels to represent the same forms, making the form sharper. The more detailed the letterforms (such as with serif typefaces), the more stark this difference becomes. This is why sans-serif typefaces are often preferred online, as their simpler shapes are better reproduced at smaller sizes.

Conclusion

Much of good typographic design has to do with being unafraid of trying new things and experimenting. Sometimes unlikely combinations work beautifully together, while at other times two typefaces that should look great together just don’t quite look right. The only way to learn what works and what doesn’t is to try new things.

Here are some very general guidelines for using typefaces for various parts of a typical design. Remember, these are just guidelines, and there will be exceptions to all of them.

• Small fonts are more readable if they’re less detailed to begin with. This is compounded when they’re being used online.
• Captions and meta information are generally a few points smaller than body copy, and should either be in the same typeface or a neutral alternative like Helvetica.
• Your typography should match the feel of your content. Formal documents should use formal type. Informal documents should use informal type. (In other words, don’t use something like Comic Sans for a corporate report, and likewise don’t use Times New Roman for a child’s birthday party invitation.)
• When in doubt, use Caslon.

With the unique privilege to experience the event, here’s where all those gadgets and toys are taking us and what companies aren’t but should be doing.

Yes this comes a little after the event has ended, but much hasn’t changed since the closure of the event. I played with almost every device on the floor. The experience of going to MWC for the second year is just as intense as the last. The plethora of devices and technologies is impressive — this year bringing over 60,000 people. As I made my probing through the booths, exhibits, picking the brains of exhibitors and the like, there were two things that became evident within the tech industry:

• Lots of Android.
• Seemingly lack of innovation

A ton of Android. It became evident that as I bounced from exhibition to exhibition, we found a plethora of Android devices finding myself saying “I keep seeing the same thing over and over again”. The same thing, with slight minor variations — Samsung doing this, Motorola doing that. But with no innovation. Steve Ballmer, Windows CEO, hit the nail on the head during his keynote. He established that it is not about the devices, everyone has the same hardware nowadays, but the OS — the platform is how you distinguish yourself.

“The battle has become Platforms vs Platforms rather than devices.”

This is true for the most part, although very well built devices and gadgets with quality materials has a very strong swaying power. This is what has helped make Apple so successful, but this isn’t about them…well it is actually.

Blame Apple for lack of industry innovation

The lack of innovation is because of the relationship, rather, the affinity non-Apple companies have with Droid. Not that the OS is bad or flawed, but the bottom line is influencing, maybe more so than normal, innovation. Companies are finding it successful to be passive and churn out devices pushing Android. Ballmer already said, the battle is of platform. Nokia was forced to either move to Droid or WP7 OS because of how weak the Symbian OS is fairing in the U.S. market. Innovation is becoming stifled. Apple’s enormous success has tricked companies into being complacent. Surely Apple executes like Steve Jobs knows this. As Apple continues to “do their own thing”, they continue to innovate a bit a head of the curve, both in hardware and software. Whereas companies are working to continue doing what they are doing hoping for success. For those running Droid OS, it is indeed a battle of devices — and mediocre proprietary Droid OS overlay and skins. Of course there is the occasional 3D this and 3D that, but how is that innovation? It is changing how we interact with the device? Not really. It is in fact straining your eyes; having spent time with the LG Optimus 3D, the exhibitor told me the best visible range for the device when I commented, “I can’t see anything as I push the device away”.

RIM and HP are exempt. I think they are trying to find ways to distinguish themselves and innovate. They have recognized the value of maintaining identity and finding niche markets (mainly BlackBerry). I like the playbook and how it works harmoniously with your BlackBerry, the relationship I wish the iPad and iPhone had. I like the HP Web OS and how they are organizing its functionality. These are companies who are continuing to be successful and “doing their own thing” (yes the Storm has been a flop, I know).

One Japanese company really impressed me with how they are using 3D. The name slips me, but they showed signs of innovation. No, it was not a device, but they created a new way of interacting with the device. I approached this gentlemen standing next to a little hole at this giant exhibition and I said “what do you have here?” He says, “Grab the stylus and touch the screen”. Of course I grab the stylus and attempt to touch the screen that has this small gecko staring at me, in 3D. As I approach the screen with the pen, it’s head turns and stares at the pen and as it gets closer the lizard begins to open it’s mouth, strikes the pen with its tongue, and I exclaim “Woah”. Suddenly a crowd of people are behind me. I felt the tongue hit the pen, I didn’t even touch the screen. The demo utilized magnets so that the computer would detect the pen within a radius of the screen (the pen having another magnet) and with careful programming would send the signal to flip the magnets causing the pen to move. It was truly different and quite an experience. I felt as though I had offended the lizard with my intrusion — a great sign of someone with their thinking caps on!

I’m an optimist and computer scientist

These are Eric’s words during his keynote. I find it ironic that the guy I have a lot of faith in, in terms of innovation, is Google’s CEO (and soon to be former) Eric Schmidt. Why ironic? Well he is Droid and he is being muscled out from his Executive position. During his keynote Eric Schmidt eluded to a lot of ideas; he is thinking ahead, while so many companies are trying to be current.

“The phone as a serendipity platform — Why doesn’t my phone coordinate with my friend’s phone and tell me ‘what road did they take to get here?’”

This resonated me. We are trying so hard to be social, and the device that is supposed to increase social interaction is actually alienating us from each other because of apps, increased phone complexities, and the like. Why can’t my phone coordinate with my friend’s phone when he or she adds a particular event that they label to interest friends, and then sync on my calendar? Or inform me that a buddy of mine has been to this restaurant and took a particular highway that took him 35minutes rather than my 45minute route? Schmidt asked a lot of these questions. We have the devices, they are all going to get faster and faster, but what is changing how we use them?

Where you can thank Apple, and where you come in

No I am not an Apple “fanboy”, I do own Apple products and do enjoy them; but you can thank them for making the competition, relatively stagnant right now. All are nipping at  their heels to make the Apple killer this, Apple killer that. Something I learned when I ran track: “It is easier to start off fast than to have to catch up at the end.” Apple has clearly set the pace, for better or for worse. You can choose to get sucked into it, or create your own path — your own race. The Zuckerburgs and Costolo’s are changing the way we interact, Steve did it with the iOS. The technology ecosystem is delicate and innovation is king, followed by content. How we interact with the world is what shapes it and creates a new direction. The Camera, phone, TV, these are all things that change interaction.

“…the device that is supposed to increase social interaction is actually alienating us from each other because of apps, increased phone complexities, and the like.”

I played with WP7 on day 2 and left feeling unsatisfied with the phone. It was “ok” but didn’t match my needs. Came back the 3rd day and played with the phone. For an hour. And guess what? Pretty damn nice OS. Sure, I was on HTC’s beautiful HD7, but the OS was crisp, smooth, beautiful, and to the point. My colleague said he’d switch from his Droid Incredible (I an iPhone4 user). We found the OS refreshing, much like Ballmer said we would. It was as though when we used it we found ourselves repeating what Steve was saying in his keynote concerning the OS. Simple tasks completely simply, but with great comfort and efficiency. Complex tasks such as email and web were intuitive and uninhibiating. The all text OS relaxes the eyes, eases the muscular faces. I heard my colleague respond after using it “I feel so relaxed while I use the phone. My eyes don’t get stressed at all.” I think this is innovative. The WP7 steers away from the direction of complex pixel pushing OS’s with all the icons and graphics to still look beautiful using typography, while still being incredibly effective.

Recap

The MWC ’11 was a great event. There is a lot to see, learn, and play with. The market is saturated with the same products over and over again. It is no wonder Apple is gaining strength. The reality is that iOS and Droid are incredibly similar, sure, iOS has higher quality applications (in my opinion), but neither OS’s are like WP7. The natural cycle of life is that as things become more and more complex, it will eventually turn to simplicity. As developers and designers, there is great innovation being done on the app front. This is where most designers and developers will continue to find work. Creating great apps that blow us away. And surely, with Android and iOS saturation, there is a ton of opportunity for App growth. App designers and developers will push how phones will shape in future expansions. Software development should drive the need for different, and hopefully innovative, technology and devices. How are we interacting with technology that makes it actually worth the effort? Lets face it; its a bit exhausting controlling your smartphone and the many things going on.

Microsoft Kinect is a way of innovating thinking. Games aside, Xbox aside, what if we could apply the same level of interaction to our TV’s, laptops, and more? This stale ecosystem of slow progression of innovation is allowing for what some call “the era of entrepreneurs”. Why? Because the technology is there, but now we have so many more ways to innovate and create things that aren’t being done. Sure you aren’t manufacturing your own hardware and what not, but maybe you’re a part of a web design team or industrial design team and you can ask “What if” or “Wouldn’t it be cool if”. These are important questions that, from MWC 11, companies aren’t asking. Apple says, “What if we do this, wouldn’t that be cool?” and they implement it while the competitive companies respond “Yes, that is cool — I’ll do that too.”

Has mobile technology innovation hit a wall? 3D is a step in the direction of innovation, but it isn’t really “moving”. It is cool to see something in 3D, but is it changing your experience? What innovations are you seeing on the mobile front?

The same goes for some foods. I used to think that eating certain foods was inhumane. Then, I visited the countries that depend on those foods for survival. Suddenly, eating these foods isn’t inhumane, instead, it’s part of the natural cycle of life. The same can be said for the old appliances we have around our house. I used to see these rusted old “droids” discarded on the streets or polluting the parks here in Atlanta, but now, after learning about Homeless Droids, suddenly they seem sad and abandoned. My perspective has changed. I don’t know how a website could somehow successfully personify these old appliances in my mind, but it has. They almost seem like lost pets.

Whether it’s an old oven, freezer, television, printer or copy machine, Homeless Droids is a place where these old machines can have a proper burial. Well, that is, until they get dumped in a landfill or wherever it is they are headed to next. The caption on the first photo is “This poor droid. Attacked and killed by humans, just outside my house, no one saw a thing.” So sad.

There are probably a few boxes any discussion of a serious interloper in the Big Two’s smartphone playground should tick. Not the least of which is the way this state of affairs came to a head, because for people who aren’t completely mentally divorced from the market events of about four short years ago, the complete reversal of Microsoft and Nokia’s fortunes in that space still can’t help but simultaneously shock and educate. Both are now rallying and attempting to retake what they’ve lost and it’s Nokia’s effort that we’ll be looking at today, personified in the N8, a strapping example of which we’ve been furnished with by Three UK.

According to Ask’s findings, in the gaming category, Xbox is at the top of the list, with over 5% of all Ask.com questions being related to the console. According to the company, gamers asked nearly five times more questions about the Xbox than the Sony Playstation. Nintendo’s Wii was somewhere in between. 

When it comes to movies, Harry Potter takes the cake. According to Ask, double the amount of questions were asked about Harry Potter, compared to Twilight, and five times more often than Avatar. 

Then there’s gadgets. The iPhone received twice as many questions as the Droid. Interestingly, Amazon’s Kindle seemed to spark more interest than the iPad. The iPad received two-thirds the amount of questions as the Kindle, according to Ask. Barnes & Noble’s Nook received less than half as many questions as the Kindle. 

"The Ask community agrees with the millions of questions asked by users overall, choosing the iPhone over the iPad this holiday season," the company says. "According to the community, while the iPad is easier on the eyes, flexible wins out. The iPhone4 is more portable, can be used as a phone, and is a lot less expensive than its larger counterpart."

I don’t know that questions asked by users of Ask.com are the best indicator of what the most popular gifts of the year will be, but it is one sample worth considering. There is no doubt that the iPhone, Kindle, Xbox and Harry Potter will all be popular gifts. 

Earlier this month, Ask shared the top ten questions/answers for the year, as well as the top questions in several specific categories like entertainment, tech, and health.
