From time to time we like to introduce artists to our readers. Today we are proud to introduce Pierrot Sant’Ana, a 23 years old brazilian designer and illustrator that loves comics, robots and zombies. Pierrot learned how to paint when he was 15 years old and also spent five years working with photography, so now he uses all of that experience on his drawings. Pierrot paintings are beautiful, delicate and inspiring, check it out.

I strongly recommend gathering reference materials and doing a bit of research to find things that inspire you before taking it to the sketchbook.

Here I have done a drawing of a musician/singer that is full of energy and life. My inspiration for this has come from a recent trip to New Orleans where music and art are completely infused into the culture.

Once you have a drawing that you are happy with, scan it into Photoshop at 300 dpi. Alternatively, if you don’t have access to a scanner you could also use a digital camera to take a picture of your drawing and then import that image into Photoshop. Below is my drawing that I have scanned which we will be using as a starting point for this tutorial.

You will find this scanned drawing in the folder called ‘drawing’ inside of the resources folder.

Step 2

After opening the drawing, create a new document that is 8.5”x11” and 300 dpi. For now you can leave the color set to RGB as shown below:

Drag the drawing into the new document and position it so that the bottom and right edge of the drawing are flush with the document canvas. The original sketch that I have scanned was done on a standard sized paper so you shouldn’t need to scale it up at all. Keep this in mind when working on your own mixed media piece because if your drawing is very small you may run the risk of losing some of the quality if you need to blow it up after scanning.

Now what we want to do is double click the Background Layer, which is currently locked, and press OK when the dialog box appears. Once the layer is unlocked we simply want to rename it ‘Background’ just to keep track of things. It is worth mentioning that as we go through the design process we should keep track of all of our layers by naming them. This will save you a headache later on, especially if we end up having 50+ layers to keep track of.

Step 3

Next, open up the first paper texture from the textures folder nested inside of the resources folder. These textures are also quite large which is great, and by adding this to our design we will already begin to see some interesting results.

What we want to do is make sure that the texture covers the entire canvas before we change the Blending Mode to Multiply. From here, reduce the Opacity and Fill to 70% as shown below:

After doing this you should have a result that now looks like this:

Step 4

Create a new layer at the top of your Layers Palette and select the color #00C6FF as shown below:

Using your Paint Bucket Tool (G) fill the new layer with the vibrant cyan color we have just selected.

After doing this, we want to change the Blending Mode of the layer to Hue so that we get a nice toned down version of the color. This creates more of a cool gray-blue color. By adding this color and blending it with the paper texture we are beginning to establish the mood of our design.

Step 5

So far we have been building up some color and texture on top of our Line Art Layer, but by doing this we also start to lose some of the contrast of the drawing. To bring this back we will make a copy of the Line Art by selecting the layer and pressing Command+J to duplicate it. Move the newly duplicated layer to the top of the Layers Palette and change the Blending Mode of the layer to Multiply as shown here:

Below you will see the difference that this makes, bringing some of that good contrast back into the piece.

Another reason that we are making a copy of this layer is because we will be doing a bit of painting to add some color to the design and we want to make sure that we don’t cover the drawing.

Step 6

Create a new layer just below the duplicated drawing layer and select the color #F35A53 as shown below:

Change the Blending Mode of the new layer to Multiply and with your Brush Tool (B) select a small-to-medium sized brush.

Begin to paint the shirt using the new color and your Brush Tool (B) staying inside of the lines. For this part I recommend zooming in at about 400-500% so that you can see the details. It’s okay if you do go outside of the lines in some spots, you can just go in and erase the areas outside of the shirt. After doing that you should have something similar to the image below:

Step 7

Next, we will create another new layer above the previous layer, but still below the line art. Choose a medium gray color (#929292) and using your Brush Tool (B) we want to paint the tie. For this part we will leave the Blending Mode set to Normal.

Zoom in while doing this to help stay inside of the lines. Again, if you go outside of the lines then you can use the Eraser Tool (E) to clean up the edges.

Step 8

Now we want to focus our efforts on laying down some mid-tones for the skin. Select the color #FBB584 and on a new layer above the tie layer begin to paint with your brush inside of the hands as well as the head. For now we will color around the mouth because we will be using slightly different colors for this area. We also want to make sure that the Blending Mode of this layer is set to Multiply.

By doing this we can start to create a more realistic piece. We will be adding slightly darker values for the shaded areas as well as some lighter areas to create the highlights. All together we will try to stay in the range of 3-4 different values, but before doing that we need to have a foundation, which is why we start with a color somewhere in the middle.

Step 9

Next we will create another new layer above the skin and using the color #985E63 we will paint the lips.

Create another new layer above the lips and use the same color to paint the tongue. Once you have done that we will need one more new layer. Choose the color #D2D0D9 to paint in the teeth.

This area may look a bit bright right now but we are going to be brightening up the skin and clothing once we add more values so everything will balance out. You should now have three separate layers for the mouth – teeth, tongue, and lips all with a single flat color applied.

Step 10

Create another new layer and using the same color that we used for the teeth in the previous step we will paint the highlighted areas of the microphone only – leave the shaded areas as is for now.

Create another layer for the watch and one for the buttons on the shirt. Use the same color to paint in a few of the highlights here as well. Once you have done that make sure to save your work in case you haven’t done so already. You can see all of the layers we have already, and this is why it is so important to name them so that we can easily locate specific layers when we need to.

We have now applied our flat colors over the image and from here we can begin to introduce some more values to enhance the depth of the design. This is what we have so far:

Step 11

Create a new layer above the shirt layer and set the Blend Mode to Multiply. Using the same color we used for the mid-tone (#F35A53) we want to choose a soft round brush at 20-40% opacity and begin to brush in the shaded areas to enhance the shadows.

Continue to go over the shaded areas to bring out some of the darker parts of the shirt. The effect should be subtle but you can see in the image below how we can gradually begin to add depth using this method.

Create another new layer above the first shadow layer and select a slightly deeper shade of red, here I am using #89322F as shown in the image below:

Paint over the darkest parts of the shadows again using a low opacity soft round brush. Make sure that your Blending Mode is set to Multiply as we have done with our first shadow layer. As you paint you may notice some areas where the color doesn’t blend quite as well. In order to rectify this problem and create a smoother fade, use your Eraser Tool (E) at a low opacity setting (10-20%) and you will notice that the colors start to blend in a more subtle way.

We have now added two shadow layers to the shirt on top of our original flat base color. In the image below you can really see how the shirt starts to come alive when we compare the before and after images.

Step 12

Now that we have added some shadows we want to add a few highlights to further enhance the shirt. Create a new layer above both shadow layers and choose a lighter shade of red (#FFB0BE) before switching to your Brush Tool (B) if it isn’t already selected.

On the new layer begin to paint with a soft brush at a low opacity like we used for the shadows in a few key areas. It’s important to keep the light source in mind as we paint, but in this instance the light is coming from behind the singer. For this reason we want to add the lighter color on the shoulder, the bottom right, and just a hint of color on the left side of the figure as I have indicated in the image below:

To smooth things out switch back and forth between the brush and the eraser at low opacities to blend the colors. This is the same technique we will be using for the other parts of the image – applying shadows and highlights with the brush and smoothing them out with a low opacity eraser.

Step 13

Create a new layer above the Tie Layer and while this layer is still highlighted in your Layers Palette, hold down the Command/Ctrl Key and click on the thumbnail icon of the Tie Layer.

Doing this will activate a selection around the tie. You should see your marching ants showing up around the shape of the tie to indicate this area.

On your new layer, switch to your Brush Tool (B) and select a soft round brush set to about 20% opacity. Here is where we will repeat the process that we used earlier when we shaded the rest of the shirt.

The image above represents the values that we want to use to add some depth to the tie. The numbers are going from the lightest to darkest.

You can easily toggle between your brush and the eyedropper by holding down the Alt Key and clicking a color that you want to use. Sample the original gray color and go a bit darker with your brush, and then using a lighter color add a few light areas as well.

Take your time with these parts and try to create a smooth blend using the techniques we have covered. After working with these four values and blending them together we continue to develop a bit more realism in our image.

Step 14

Create another new layer above the lips and switch to your Brush Tool (B). We want to use about four different values here that we are going to blend together using a low opacity brush.

From left to right the exact colors I am using are #A37D7C, #8E5568, #6A3235, and #2A1416.

The image below indicates the areas from lightest to darkest where I have used these colors and smoothed them out in order to create a nice blended feel. Notice how the highlights are being used sparingly around a few edges, but the rest of the lips are painted using these values to give the illusion of depth.

The teeth are created using the same method as above by implementing a few values and shading them to create depth. Again, use a soft round brush at about 10-20% to smooth out any hard lines that may appear.

Step 15

We are looking pretty good so far, so I hope that you are still with me here as we continue to shade and work on our painting. The two parts that still remain are some of the more difficult things to paint – skin tones and metal (the microphone).
Some people prefer to work on everything at the same time but for the purposes of this tutorial I thought it would be easier to break things down and focus on the separate parts individually. This also helps us because it allows us to isolate different pieces of our image like we are about to do.

Hold the Command/Ctrl Key and click on the thumbnail icon of your flat skin color layer as shown in the image below:

Doing this should then activate a selection around the skin.

Create a new layer while this selection is still active and set the Blending Mode to Multiply. Switch back to your Brush Tool (B). Select a soft round brush and begin to brush the darker shaded areas of the skin using the color #4D382A. Here is where you can use the sketch as somewhat of a guide: It helps us to see the value in the image like we did earlier with the shirt.

Begin with the hands and fill in the areas that are shaded before swapping your brush colors by pressing the X Key on your keyboard. Select a slightly pinkish value or a rose color to use in some areas like the ears and the thumb of the hand on a new layer above your shadows.

Begin to mix these colors together with the original flat color by sampling with the Eyedropper Tool (I) by holding the Alt Key and selecting a color then brushing with a light opacity brush.

Use the darker brush again on the Multiply layer and paint the darker parts of the face such as the beard, underneath the ear, around the eyes, and continue to use the drawing as a rough guide.

Once you have blended the colors a bit further zoom out a bit by pressing Command and the Minus Key on your keyboard to see how things are looking from a bit further back.

Step 16

We now want to add a few additional values to the skin so that we can continue to blend them together creating a smooth gradient from light to dark. The colors I am using here from lightest to darkest are #C29C83, #9B755A, #714F38, and #3B1F13.

Use the same techniques that we have been using for the previous step where we hold the Command/Ctrl Key and click on the original flat skin color layer to activate the selection and add the new values on separate layers using a low opacity soft round brush.

This is another step where you can take as little or as much time as you would like in order to achieve a higher level of realism with the image. Continue to blend these different values together including some highlights on the nose, cheek, and forehead. From here we can toggle back and forth between the eyedropper and brush by pressing ‘B’ to select your brush and then while you are painting you can just press the Alt Key and click on an area that you want to sample.

At this point we just want to check and make sure that everything is balanced and check to make sure that we don’t have any areas that are too bright or saturated. As you paint you can also zoom in and out to concentrate on the larger areas first and then going in close for the details.

Step 17

Next we will move onto the microphone and the mic stand. Create a new layer above the Microphone Layer and using a dark gray (not quite black, but close) we want to go over the darkest parts of the microphone stand. Remember that the drawing is here as a guide and the values and shadows can serve as a loose guide for us to follow.

In the image below you will notice that I have darkened the microphone stand and have also begun to blend in some other shades of gray as well. The lighter values have been added on a separate layer just like we did earlier with the other parts of our image. We want this part to look shiny and have some nice tones although these aren’t quite as smooth as the skin for example.

Using a low opacity hard round brush continue to blend these values into one another. I am keeping my brush opacity at about 10-15% for this part. This really starts to bring everything together and creates a nice contrast in our image. Remember to zoom out every once in a while to see your progress.

Step 18

Create a new layer at the top of your Layers Palette and with a hard round brush at a low opacity, begin to sample some colors from the shirt to add some ambient light to the microphone. The image below shows a few of the colors that I am blending and what we want to do is make the edges darker and more saturated and gradually blend them into the lighter gray color towards the highlighted piece.

You may notice from the image above that I have tweaked the microphone itself to suit my needs and this can be done on a new layer at the top of the Layers Palette where you would want to use a hard round brush at full opacity to create more defined lines that define the shapes.

Step 19

Create another new layer at the top of your Layers Palette and switch to your Gradient Tool (G). Make sure that you have a Radial Gradient that fades from solid white to transparent as shown in the image below:

On your new layer, create a gradient and change the Blending Mode to Overlay. Move the highlight over the top of the forehead, right in the corner of the hairline. From here, we just want to lower the Opacity to about 28-30% and also set the Fill to about 50%.

This is an easy way to add a bit of extra highlight to an image just to give it a little bit of extra shine. Experiment with using gradients set to different Blending Modes to create some interesting results.

Step 20

Next, make sure that you have your top layer highlighted in the Layers Palette and then click on the small black and white cookie icon along the bottom row of icons in the palette. This is the Adjustment Layer Menu where we want to scroll up and select ‘Levels’ to apply the adjustment.

Move the left slider in to the right so that it’s set to 8 as shown here:

After applying the Levels Adjustment everything below this layer will have been adjusted. Doing this helps to bring a slightly stronger contrast to the entire image.

Step 21

Load the Sparkle Brushes from the Resources Folder and create a new layer at the top of your Layers Palette. From here, switch to your Brush Tool (B) if you don’t already have it selected and press the F5 Key on your keyboard to bring up your palette.

Choose the brush you want to start with and select a solid white color. Use the right bracket key to enlarge the brush to about 2200-2400 pixels and paint on the canvas. Once you have applied the brush, changing the Blending Mode of the layer to Overlay and with the layer still highlighted in your Layers Palette, press Command/Ctrl+J to duplicate the layer once.

Move the brushes so that the diagonal lines intersect with the upper right of the body, near the collar and neck area.

Continue to add new brushes and experiment with the positioning of them, making sure that the Blending Modes are set to Overlay while using a solid white color. After trying a few additional brushes this is what I have come up with:

Step 22

Select the first sparkle brush layer and then hold down the Shift Key and click on the bottom brush layer in your Layers Palette to select all of your brushes simultaneously.

While the layers are all selected, press Command/Ctrl+G to put them into a Group Folder and call them something like ‘Sparkle Brushes’ or any other name you like.

With the folder selected click on the Layer Mask Icon at the bottom of the Layers Palette where I have circled below:

Next, with a hard round brush select a solid black and paint over the skin to remove any parts of the brush that are overlapping the face, neck, and hands. Using a mask this way gives us more control over where the brushes are visible.

Continue to add brushes and experiment with the placement of them before adding more masks and painting out the areas that you don’t want showing.

After building up some light streaks in the background and over certain parts of the singer you can bring out not only more saturated colors, but the overall contrast of the image. Having angles like this will also make the design quite dynamic as well.

Step 23

Create a new layer at the top of your Layers Palette and switch to your Gradient Tool (G) selecting a Radial Gradient that fades from solid to transparent. For the color, we want to use a vibrant blue color (I am using #040EFE).

Create the gradient on our new layer and change the Blending Mode to Linear Dodge (Add) and position them around the singer and in the corners of the image. This will bring out more color in the background and enhance the overall light effect that we have created. To further enhance this effect you can make a duplicate of it by selecting the layer and pressing Command/Ctrl+G. The light may become too intense in which case all we need to do is lower the opacity to about 50% before pressing Command/Ctrl+E to merge it with the layer below.

Step 24

After blending the colors a bit more and adding a few details I think that our image is looking good. Let’s take a step back just to see where we are at now compared to what we started with.

At this point we have gone through the process of taking a scanned drawing and turning it into a mixed media piece that uses digital painting techniques along with some creative brushing and lighting. Make sure you save all of your hard work and give yourself a pat on the back if you have made it through! Thanks for following along! See you next time.

In this Photoshop tutorial, we will learn how to create digital painting for techno car shape in Photoshop using graphic tablet. The following steps show how to construct your painting from scratch and move to the final look of the car shape. In addition to the steps, the speed painting video shows how to use the graphic tablet to create the painting.

It is the first time to add this type of tutorials that are enhanced with screencast video. If you find this new video addition helpful to learn better, share with us your opinion about this type of tutorials to consider in the next tutorials.

Step 1:

Sketch your own ideas of a ship or car of some sort.

Step2:

On a new layer, make some definitive shapes that will end up in the final piece.

Step 3:

With the Poligonal Lasso tool (L) outline the shape of the ship and fill it in with color gray.

Step 4:

Your best friend should be the Poligonal Lasso tool (L). Put a mark on the area of the ship where you will start to do the shading. Make sure to do it on a new layer and to have that layer as a clipping mask. Double click on the layer and a menu bar will appear. Scroll down and hit “create clipping mask”.

Step 5:

You will also want to use the Gaussian blur a lot. After you set a certain amount of blur you can make a short cut by hitting Ctrl/Cmd+F.

Step 6:

Continue filling in the shadow to make it more dimensional. Make sure that the light source is the same on all of them.

Step 7:

In every part where the metal touches another plate that has a groove, make it with a dark gray and then add a little highlight on the side that is hitting the light.

Step 8:

Don’t forget to add little indentions and variations in the piece by using the lasso tool.

Step 9:

Some interesting things can be added. This can be done with the circle marque tool.

Step 10:

Adding a little color is nice. You can select areas but you want to make sure they are on their own layers because you will be moving it.

Step 11:

Adding little lights is a great idea. Add each circle by creating one and then duplicating it (Cmd/Ctrl+J) and then moving/resizing (Cmd/Ctrl+T) and then merging the different layer circles (Cmd/Ctrl+E).

Step 12:

Once you have all the lights on a single layer hit Ctrl/Cmd+B to change the color.

Step 13:

In some areas where they end up being too bright, you will have to go back and make the parts darker the same way you did at the beginning but on a new layer.

Step 14:

Make sure to smooth it out.

Step 15:

Throughout the piece, you want to have grooves and intentions to make the piece interesting. Don’t forget to add the highlights to the different plates. Adding some really dark places will make it more dimensional as well.

Step 16:

After you are done with all the shades and shadows, it is now time to color the piece. Put all the layers in a single group and then, duplicate that group and merge it into a single layer. Then, hit Ctrl/Cmd+B to change the color.

Step 17:

Metal, no matter how new had spots and hard spots, so pick out/make a texture brush and add it around the darker areas.

Step 18:

To change the color of the windshield, make a new layer as a clipping mask and lasso the area. Fill it in and change the layer style to “Overlay.” If you do this, the value of the layer below will stay the same.

Step 19:

Then, change the color of the windshield to the color you want.

Step 20:

You don’t want the ship to be floating in white space so, add a bit of shadow underneath it to make it appear it’s really floating on water. Use your Gaussian blur.

Step 21:

Create a new Adjustment layer with “Brightness/contrast” and make the contrast high to where you want it. And there you go! A cool ship! I Hope you find this helpful.

As always, this is the final image that we’ll be creating:

Step 1

Create a new document (600X700px). Paste in this old paper texture.

Step 2

Call this first layer ‘old paper texture’. Reduce it’s opacity to 30%.

Step 3

Apply a hue/saturation adjustment layer and a levels adjustment layer.

Settings below:

Hue/Saturation Adjustment Layer

Hue: 0
Saturation: -60
Lightness: 0

Levels Adjustment Layer

57 / 0.87 / 255

Step 4

Now download this great free High-Res Sunburst Vector Set.

Paste it into your document, making sure to position it centrally.

Call this layer ’sunburst’, and then change it’s opacity to 20% and change it’s layer blend mode to ‘multiply’.

Step 5

Now apply a hue/saturation adjustment layer (settings below).

Hue/Saturation Adjustment Layer:

Hue: 0
Saturation: -100
Lightness: 0

This grayscales your sunburst, but also your entire image! You only want this adjustment layer to effect your sunburst shape, so simply go to layer>apply clipping mask:

Step 6

Paste in this guitar photo.

Crop it so that only the parts shown below remain. Then change this layer’s blend mode to ‘overlay’.

Call this layer ‘guitar 1′.

Step 7

Download this incredible High-Res Watercolor Brush Set.

Then with your ‘guitar 1′ layer selected, go to layer>apply layer mask>reveal all.

Use various brushes from your watercolor brush set, set to black (000000), 100% opacity, and start painting over the edges of your guitar image. Because you have applied a layer mask, painting over these areas in black with mask off the edges of your guitar image.

The watercolor brush that you’re using means the edges will be very rough and artistic!

Step 8

Apply a hue/saturation adjustment layer, and be sure to apply a clipping mask, so that it only effects your ‘guitar 1′ layer, rather than your entire image.

Hue/Saturation Adjustment Layer

Hue: 0
Saturation: -100
Lightness: 0

Step 9

Now duplicate your ‘guitar 1′ layer, calling the duplicate (you guessed it!) ‘guitar 2′.

Go to edit>transform>flip horizontal to flip your duplicate guitar image. Then reapply the same adjustment layer settings. If needed reapply clipping masks where needed:

Step 10

Now type out some text to fill your poster.

I used a variety of fonts (see diagram below), including:

Chunkfive
AW Conqueror Carved
AW Conqueror Inline
Birch Std
AW Conqueror Slab

Step 11

Use your line tool to draw a black, 1px line above and below your bottom line of text.

Merge your two line layers together and call your merged layer ‘divider’. Reduce this layer’s opacity to 50%.

Step 12

Paste in part of a texture from our great Premium Texture Set: Tint.

Make sure that this texture layer is beneath your text/guitar layers, but above your background/sunburst layers. Call this layer ‘tint texture 1′.

Step 13

Move your ‘tint texture 1′ layer to the top of your canvas. Reduce this layer’s opacity to 55%, and then use the same masking technique that you used on your guitar layers (being sure to use your watercolor brush set for masking).

Step 14

Now apply a hue/saturation adjustment layer (settings below). Be sure to apply a clipping mask so that this adjustment layer only effects your tint texture 1 layer.

Hue/Saturation Adjustment Layer:

Hue: 0
Saturation: -80
Lightness: -30.

Step 15

Now repeat this technique, but placing your texture over the texture specifying your supporting band. You can duplicate your tint texture 1 layer and hue/saturation adjustment layer, and then just adjust your layer mask.

To give your image a final bit of impact, we’re going to apply some final adjustment layers as top layers.

As always, this is the final image that we’ll be creating:

What You’ll Need For This Tutorial

- A Webcam (it doesn’t need to be top-quality)
- A hobby
- Some creativity!

Step 1

Personally, I get a little tired of using the same old stock photography as everyone else.

As we’re all creative people here, why not simply take out own? For the purposes of this tutorial you don’t even need a digital camera or even photography skills. We’ll be using our computer webcams! If you’re on a Mac then you can just us the app Photo Booth. Otherwise, if you’re on a PC just use the equivalent piece of software. It doesn’t matter that this won’t provide the absolute clearest picture, as we’re working on a slightly messy/grungy montage!

Start off by thinking about what you love doing, what your hobbies are. Personally, asides from design I love playing and writing music, so this is going to be the theme of my montage. I collect up a few objects that remind me of music (my two guitars, a guitar tuner and a guitar pick). Then I use Photo Booth to collect a photo of each. You can see my photos below:

Step 2

Now create a new document (600X600px). Use your lasso tool to select the guitar in your first photo, and then copy/paste it into your new document.

Step 3

Cut out the rest of your objects, and paste them into this new document:

Step 4

Duplicate each of your object layers, and hide the original. This is just to retain a copy incase anything goes wrong during your image construction.

Then start resizing, rotating, and reordering your images into a composition that you’re happy with:

Step 5

Merge down all of your visible object layers until they’re combined on a single layer. Call this merged layer ‘music montage’.

With your ‘music montage’ layer selected go to filter>sharpen>sharpen, just to clean up your image a little bit.

Step 6

We want a background texture now, but in the spirit of this tutorial, we’ll be creating our own! Select a nice surface that you like (I chose a rug of mine) and use your webcam to capture it. Then paste it behind your ‘music montage’ layer, resizing it to fit your canvas if necessary:

Step 7

Now it’s time to start blending together your images a little better. Create a series of adjustment layers just above your background texture layer (so below your music montage layer).

You need to create the following:

A Hue/Saturation Adjustment Layer

Saturation: -30
Lightness: -30

A Levels Adjustment Layer

14 / 0.95 / 212

A Color Balance Adjustment Layer

Shadows: -5, -4, -5
Midtones: -23, -4, -6
Highlights: -33, -11, +8

Step 8

Now apply a series of adjustment layers over your ‘music montage’ layer. Be sure to apply a clipping mask (layer>apply clipping mask) to each adjustment layers, so that their settings only effect your ‘music montage’ layer and not your entire document.

You need to create the following:

Hue/Saturation Adjustment Layer

Saturation: -72
Lightness: -10

Levels Adjustment Layer

23 / 1.14 / 207

Curves Adjustment Layer

(see diagrams below):

Step 9

Create a new layer called ‘dodge/burn’.

Go to edit>fill and fill your canvas with ‘50% gray’.

Step 10

Change your ‘dodge/burn’ layer’s blend mode to ‘overlay’.

This will make your 50% gray invisible, and let you paint over your underlying canvas.

Select a soft, black paintbrush (15% opacity) and proceed to paint in your shadows. You should try to accentuate your larger areas of shadow first. Then zoom in closely, and use a smaller black paintbrush to paint in the details of shadow in your image.

On the same layer repeat this process, but using a white brush as your dodge areas. Paint over all highlights, accentuating them also.

The images below show your ‘dodge/burn’ layer at ‘normal’ blend mode, so that you can see where I painted, and then at ‘overlay’ so you can see the effect this has on your image. It makes it very stylized, giving it an almost hand-painted feel:

Step 11

Create a new layer called ‘overlay lighting’. Select your radial gradient tool, and create a white-transparent gradient. Drag out a few radial gradients over areas of your canvas where you want to enhance the color/lighting.

Step 12

Change this layer’s blend mode to ‘overlay’, and reduce it’s opacity to 30%. This should give your image a little more impact, making these select areas brighter and more intense:

Step 13

Now create a final top adjustment layer (gradient map) with your gradient ranging from 0b01b8 to fdfa03.

Change this layer’s blend mode to ‘overlay’ and reduce it’s opacity to 6%.

And We’re Done!

No doubt that the new release of Photoshop CS5 comes with some great features that will change the way we use Photoshop and reduce the time and effort that we usually spend performing certain tasks.

The release of Photoshop CS5 includes many new, revolutionary features such as Mixed Brushes that let you create digital painting effect over images, the complex selection using the Quick Selection tool and the Puppet Warp tool that lets you easily change the shape of images and text with more flexibility.

In addition to the above features, Photoshop CS5 includes an enhanced Merge HDR Pro that lets you easily create HDR images and 3D Repoussé that lets you create 3D objects from 2D based shapes and text.
The Content-Aware Fill is one of the new smart features that allow you to fill areas in an image with the same content of the background. Actually, we used to have a problem when we wanted to remove part of the image elements such as a car from the street image or a man from a garden. This task was taking a lot of time, effort and required good skills to smartly remove these parts of the image.

The new Content-Aware algorithm lets Photoshop fill the areas that you want to remove with similar content from the background as accurately as possible depending on the image details and how Photoshop’s new algorithm interacts with the image content. The Content-Aware can be found as one of the Fill options when you select the area that you would like to remove from the image. Therefore, you can use this new feature with any of the selection methods available in Photoshop. You can also use the Content-Aware option of the Spot Healing Brush tool.

In this article, we will see how to use the Content-Aware tool to smartly remove parts of the image, either using it through the fill option or through the Spot Healing Brush tool.

The Content-Aware Fill

Using the Content-Aware as a fill option gives you the ability to remove large parts of the image and fill it with background that does not include a lot of details. You can select the part that you would like to remove using any of the available selection tools and choose how you want to replace the removed part.

In the below example, we will see how to remove part of an image using the Selection tools and fill with the Content-Aware fill:

In the image, I would like to remove the jumping man from the sky background. In previous versions of Photoshop, I needed to use the Clone Stamp tool and go through many steps to remove the image whilst keeping the background consistent with the rest of the image. Now, I will use the Content-Aware to remove the background with only two steps

1. Use the Lasso tool to select around the man on the image
2. Choose Fill from the Edit menu and set the fill option to be Content-Aware

Notice how the man is removed with the image easily and Photoshop tries to fill the gap with similar content from the background.

Content-Aware with the Spot Healing Brush tool

The Spot Healing brush can use the Content-Aware option from the Properties bar to give you more accurate results, especially when working with small areas or when you need more accurate content placement.

In the example below, we will remove the flower parts that are spread on the sky. We can do this by using the selection tool, select each part, and remove it, or we can use the Spot Healing Brush tool with the Content-Aware setting. The second method is much easier and takes fewer steps than the previous method.

1. While the image is open, select the Spot Healing Brush tool
2. Set its properties to Content-Aware from the top Properties bar
3. Draw over the areas that you would like to remove and notice how Photoshop replaces it with the sky background.

Although you don’t have to use both methods at the same time, its good practice to be capable of doing so as they are each suited to different scenarios. For example, Photoshop could not replace the removed areas with the correct background for some reason. In this case you can try either method or try to fix smaller areas instead of one large selection by changing the Spot Healing brush size.

In this article, we briefly covered the new Content-Aware feature in Photoshop CS5 and understood how to use it to remove image parts smartly and easily. You can try to practice this feature with different images and different complexity of details.

This technique requires a solid understanding of light, exposure, color theory and composition. A truly masterful depiction of a fantasy city. This one has superb perspective, a grand scale and wonderful lighting.

Believe it or not, this is actually this artist’s first matte painting! The colors are just beautiful. You could stare at this one all day.

Some people are just geniuses when it comes to design. They’re the "Albert Einsteins" of the industry, often forcing you to *facepalm* for the insane brilliance of their concepts and techniques.

In fact, their artistic ability appears so naturally, as if they emerged from their mother’s womb with a graphics tablet already in hand.

Did I mention I hate (hate is such a strong word, more like envy) those people?

We All Start From the Bottom

No matter what our artistic skill level is at the time we become a designer, we all start at our lowest. And the only point at which we finally realize this is when time has passed and we see visible improvement.

As a digital artist, I often hear feedback from other artists who are insecure about their current skill level. And though as discouraging as it may initially be to push forward, I can assure you that the payoff is incredibly rewarding.

My Bout with Mediocrity

This was my first digital painting back in 2007. It’s okay, you can laugh it up.

I made the painting in Corel Paint Shop Pro with an obvious misunderstanding of building layers for volume and intensity. I can now look back on this first attempt and continue to learn from my mistakes, even today.

Digital paintings require time, patience and persistence to continue working on areas you just know aren’t right. At the time, I didn’t understand the significance of painting in layers, and frustrations peaked when it seemed impossible to master quickly.

But as an artist or designer, when you’ve discovered a style that piques your interest, you take on the inevitable journey to continuous growth. View my own progression as an artist from the age of 5 to 20 years old.

Reemerge Into the Design World as a Butterfly

The only way to unsheathe your potential for artistic genius is by embracing growth. Envelope yourself in a cocoon of knowledge and get ready for your talents to blossom.

The following are tips for bringing out the talent within you.

Stick to One Style

You don’t have to be a jack-of-all-trades — it’s exhausting.

Take the time to perfect the style and technique of your choice, leaving room for future branding potential.

Enroll in at Least One Design/Drawing Class

Designers all over the world have proven that it’s not necessary to have a degree in design to be successful.

However, whether you realize it or not, your work exhibits common design principles and understanding these principles is important to functional designs that make sense.

For years, I tried to read every drawing book I could find, but it wasn’t until a drawing professor showed me what I was doing wrong that I was able to jump over my plateau. Something inside me just "clicked".

Once you have your "aha" moment, feel free to scour the unlimited resources on and offline to further your wealth of knowledge.

Switch It Up!

Is the current style, technique, or medium you utilize beginning to bore you to death?

Well, try something new! It didn’t take long before I joined "the occult of Adobe," armed with a pen tablet in hand and ready to embark on the fantasies within my mind.

Practice, Practice, Practice

Take a sketchbook and draw what you see. Create sketched observations of light and shadow. Play with perspective until it starts playing with you — just practice! After all, a person doesn’t just wake up and become an Olympian gold medalist overnight.

Enjoying the Fruits of Your Labor

Two years after my original digital painting faux pas, I recreated an acrylic painting from my teen years in Photoshop.

This moment would soon become an enlightening point in my life where I finally realized my potential.

And though I will forever consider myself as an artist on a never-ending path of knowledge and growth, it’s important to stop and embrace those powerful moments of reflection.

This tutorial will walk you through the simple steps used to turn a regular photograph into an interesting digital painting illustration, using Photoshop’s Filter Gallery and the Smudge Tool. Depending on the photograph you choose, it shouldn’t take you more than a couple of hours to complete.

Before I begin, I must give a huge thanks to @kidhelios / for allowing me to use his photo of George Auckland (my old boss from the BBC) as the source for this illustration.

Preview

The first thing to do is to resize the photo to your desired output size. This is important as the Filter Gallery effects are heavily pixel based and if you resize after you’ve finished your work, it can blend them all back together and lessen the overall effect. My photo was taken with an original iPhone and is only 480×640 pixels. I wanted the final illustration to be bigger so I enlarged the image size to 960 pixels high and also increased the canvas width to 1200. Next I boosted the Brightness and Contrast to help the Filter Gallery effects really pick out the noise from the iPhone’s less-than-brilliant camera. The easiest way to do this is with an adjustment layer, as it is non-destructive.

Next we need to drop out the background, fix any problems and prepare the photo for the filters. I’ll leave you to choose your own way of removing the background, but I prefer straightforward painting in the Layer Mask, for the level of control is gives you. You can be fairly rough with elements like the hair as they’ll be fixed when we get on to the smudging part later on. In my original photo, the subject’s left shoulder has been cropped from the frame, so that needs to be put back in. I’ve just copied the right shoulder and flipped it across to the left, tweaking a few bits along the way. Again, it doesn’t need to be precise and photo-realistic at all, as long as the basic shape is right and you pay attention to the highlights, shadows and overall tone of the area.

Now we are finished with our basic image adjustments, it’s time to apply the filters.

Load your Layer Mask as a selection (hold down the Apple key and click the Layer Mask) and Copy Merged (Apple-Shift-C), then Paste into a new layer. If you find that the pasted version has moved slightly, just reposition it over the original – quickly flipping the Blend Mode to ‘Difference’ can help, when everything is black, the two layers are aligned.

Select the bottom layer of the three and apply the ‘Poster Edges’ effect from the Filter Gallery. Tweak the settings until you get some nice black lines defining areas of you subject, almost like cartoon outlines.

On the next layer up, apply the ‘Accented Edges’ effect. This one should brighten up your image and add some nice highlights. Set the Blend Mode to ‘Overlay’.

On the third layer, apply the ‘Glowing Edges’ effect. Don’t worry that your image has suddenly gone black, the extra highlights and neon glows will be perfect once you set the Blend Mode to ‘Lighten’ and reduce the Opacity down to 50%.

Obviously, all of these settings are specific to this photo and may not be right for yours, so feel free to tinker and tweak until you’re happy, maybe even try out some of the other filters. When you’re done you should end up with something like this.

Now for the fun part.

With your three Filter Gallery layers visible, Select All, Copy Merged and Paste once more, and make sure the pasted copy lines up with the other again. Duplicate this layer (so you have a merged back-up) and then this is layer that we will be painting, but before we start there are two little tweaks to Photoshop’s default settings we should change first. In the Preferences, go to Performance and up the number of History States saved to at least 200 if you haven’t already. The second tweak is in Keyboard Shortcuts from the Edit menu, and is to change the usual Undo command (good old Apple-Z) to activate Step Backward instead. This allows you to quickly go back through those 200 history states if something doesn’t look right.

OK, now for the fun part…

Select the Smudge Tool – it’s the third option of the Blur/Sharpen tool – and choose a smallish soft brush, with the Strength set to 50%. Now just start brushing your image and blend the combined Filter effects back together to resemble brush strokes. The key here is ‘short, controlled bursts’ and to follow the natural lines and curves of your subject. Go with the contours of the skin, the curls of the hair, the patterns of the clothing and so on. Be careful not to bend any of the black lines away from their curves, if you do then Apple-Z is your new best friend.

Other useful keyboard shortcuts to know for this process are the square bracket keys – [ ] – which reduce and increase your brush size, and the number keys, which will alter the strength of the smudge effect (remember; 0 sets it to 100%, 9 to 90% etc)

Keep going like this, working methodically around the subject. When you do the hair, you can tidy up your rough mask from earlier by extending whispy hairs out from the head when you smudge them and also correct any other areas that you’re not happy with – I altered the cloned lapel of the jacket while smudging as I didn’t think I had the angle right first time.

Once you’ve finished your painting, you’ll need a background. I’ve used and tweaked Fabio’s excellent space background tutorial and added a spiral galaxy from the NASA archive for mine. As a finishing touch I’ve duplicated my painted layer, given it a high Gaussian Blur and moved it below the painting layer to add an overall glow to the image. If you plan on painting your background using the same effect, it’s useful to keep it separate from your foreground image so you don’t end up smudging the two together.

This pulled me over the edge to do a showcase on digital painting, something I’ve been following for years now. Even if you don’t know the first thing about digital brushwork you can still be greatly inspired by the awesome color choices, composition and sometimes totally unique angles these paintings have.
