Close to 200 customer comments on a Dell blog–recounted on sites such as The Consumerist–are all remarkably similar: People placed their orders, months ago in some cases, and then watched as the shipping date keeps getting pushed off.

“I ordered an Inspiron 17 on NOVEMBER 28, supposedly to be delivered on Dec 14. Just checked the status page, and it has been delayed for the fourth time and now not set to deliver until JANUARY 7, 2010!,” wrote one customer.

Said another: “I haven’t received a single email from Dell, either proactively about the delays or in response to the two emails I have sent…Some people here report problems cancelling orders. I can’t even get in touch with anyone to be able to talk about cancelling mine!”

Dell didn’t respond to a request for comment. But on its blog, Dell blamed the delays on increased demand for computers and an inability to get the appropriate components from suppliers. This, incidentally, is pretty close to the explanation it gave when it had similar delays shipping a product in mid-2007. A blog post addressing the delays back then received 1,333 angry comments, so the current situation still has a ways to go before it catches up on the volume of ire.

There might be more depth this time around, though. One thing that seemed to upset customers was that Dell’s ordering system was still quoting delivery dates that didn’t take the delays into account. Commenters said that they wouldn’t have ordered computers if they were told the computers wouldn’t’ arrive in time for Christmas.

In the current blog post dated December 17, Dell offered to send people who were waiting for computers intended as Christmas gifts a holiday card to stick under the tree instead. That didn’t go over so well. The first response: “Thanks Dell my son will be so thrilled to receive his holiday card instead of his netbook, you really came through this time!!”

Yesterday, for vague reasons, AT&T’s website stopped selling iPhones to New York City residents. iPhones were still being sold in AT&T’s physical stores, which created a lot of confusion (something the company’s statements and service reps didn’t help alleviate).

While the exact reasons for the iPhone being yanked are still blurry (it may have been due to fraud concerns), the issue is now moot as AT&T’s website has begun selling iPhones to New York City residents once again. If you’re a New Yorker and you try to buy an iPhone from the AT&T website, you’re going to actually be able to follow through on your order.

AT&T’s decision to resume iPhone sales in the NYC area likely means one of two things: Either the company solved the fraud problem or (more likely) it wanted to get out of the negatively cast spotlight.

With many New Yorkers not happy with AT&T’s coverage, they didn’t need any more bad press.

Well seeing as it’s Christmas over the past few weeks I have been searching for sites that have displayed the festive spirit and created sites with a touch of the Holidays about them. This was much harder than I thought it would be and I didn’t manage to find quite as many as I’d hoped. I’d love to hear about any that you may have seen. When my father was alive, every time I would send him an email, he would pick up the phone and call me. He explained that since we didn’t live close together and didn’t have an in-person relationship, he wanted to call me so that nothing was lost in translation online.

His theory was that when you communicate primarily online, since there is no eye contact, no tone of voice, no obvious gestures, sometimes things can be misinterpreted. My father’s words are ringing in my head after what happened yesterday. I got in my very first online argument ever. To make matters worse, it was with one of my closest Twitter friends.

He sent me a direct message which I misinterpreted. I fired back with an email. He misinterpreted my email and sent a very strong email back arguing points that weren’t relevant. We wasted a whole bunch of time and energy on jumbled up mess of misunderstandings.

The strange thing is that this person is so special to me and I would never want to hurt him, but it just all happened so fast. And then poof – the damage was done. Suddenly an entire long standing friendship felt like it was on the rocks over a thirty minute misunderstanding. I didn’t sleep all night.

I learned a lot from this experience. If this has never happened to you before, then I hope to give you some pointers so that if it does happen, you will handle it better than I did.

1. The whole thing started with that first email I sent. Once I did that, it was over. I’m still having a hard time recovering from that action. Don’t think twice before sending something like that, instead, think about ten times.

2. Everything online is amplified. If you are annoyed, you will come across as angry. If you are angry, you will come across as very angry. Instead of typing exactly what you are thinking, remember this and adjust your words accordingly.

3. Know when to stop. That is probably the only one thing we did right in that argument. I wasn’t even the one to stop it; he gets all the credit for that. He knew when to stop and turn the corner. Looking back, that was so important.

4. Be more patient, more kind and more understanding that you might be in person because just as you are trying to decipher their text, they are doing the same thing with yours. Give the other person the benefit of the doubt, always.

In the end, we kissed and made up, thank goodness. I apologized over and over. I won’t be having another online spat again, ever.

A review done by a user. There are PLENTY of such reviews on YouTube but this one caught my interest quite fast. It looked like a really good video capture and good quality is always nice to watch. Sound and picture wise.

So I started watching it trying to pass the information into the proper parts of my brain where I knew I could store them. The clip, lasting some 6 minutes and 30 seconds, was a great review…I am sure. Watching it gave me…just about nothing. The quality and the wealth of information was really nicely organized and the different locations were really…uh…distracting.

After watching it I can honestly say that I had no clue what the girl (Melissa Jenna Compagnucci) who was reviewing this amazing hardware had been talking about. How some people actually believe people will listen to their really nice review when they look like models and are tech fanatics like the rest of us geeks I will never understand. I feel kind of guilty when I say this as I feel as I should have been listening closer to what she was talking about instead of just watching her.

I am sure this must sound really weird and maybe I am odd in some way but it really put things in perspective. All of a sudden I understood that…I’m a geek!! I know, I should be ashamed. Sorry, but is it just me? LOL

Remember how last month an Australian coder has come up with an exploit for jailbroken iPhones to prove that those who didn’t change their root passwords are at risk? Well, after a few weeks someone else has turned it into a virus that was supposedly capable of stealing your sensitive data. But things got a bit more complicated today, as another Swiss developer said that Apple’s iPhone may not be as safe as the company claims it to be, even if it’s the original and not the pirated version.

Back in the day I was one of those kids interested in getting all those tricks you see on TV out of my skateboard. While I didn’t become the next Tony Hawk, I certainly enjoyed riding it. I don’t know if I’d get on such a beast right now but if you offered me one of these electric skateboards that I’m about to show you, then I’m going to be back in the game.

Google got into the Holiday spirit several weeks early. The search giant didn’t want to just give boring old toys or gadgets, though. No, when Google does something, it does it on a wide scale. Perhaps that’s why they gave holiday travelers the gift of free Wi-Fi in 47 U.S. airports and free Wi-Fi on Virgin America flights.

The technology behemoth made clear today that it’s not done giving, though. Google has just added an additional seven airports in its free Wi-Fi program. They are: Washington-Dulles, Washington-Reagan National, Phoenix, Columbus (Ohio), Albany, Boise, and Asheville (North Carolina).

Don’t forget: in addition to free Wi-Fi, Google is also matching donations made in these airports to Engineers Without Borders, One Economy Corporation, and the Climate Savers Computing Initiative, so you can do your part to give as well.

Earlier this month some smart thieves managed to get their hands on 3,000 to 4,000 unlocked iPhones from a Belgian store. You might ask what’s so special about Belgian phones for robbers to steal that many units. Well in case you didn’t know it already, Belgian iPhones are required by law to be unlocked before customers get their hands on them.

When I opened CreativeCox.com, I really didn’t have a plan (mistake #1) and have had a hard time deciding what to make this site into. I’ve been tempted to close the site down or merge it into another blog, but keep receiving feedback otherwise.

So I need your input. Here are just a few questions / discussion starters and I’d love to hear designers and creative individuals weigh in. I’m basically crowd-sourcing this one little piece of my life…

Is there room for another fully-blown inspiration and tutorials site?

What hasn’t been touched on or blogged about enough in the design community?

If you were my blogging boss, so to speak, what would you tell me to change? Really, you can be honest.

In case you happen to love your Nintendo DSi then I just hope you didn’t just purchase your own DSi. I am saying all this as there’s a new DSi in town, a bigger one that you’ll like even better. The DSi LL has been officially unveiled today by Nintendo and the new handheld console will be available in Japan starting with November 21.

First of all, do you know what was happening on Earth 43,000 years ago? I didn’t. I had to look up a timeline. Apparently, 43,000 years ago was the time when the earliest migration into Europe took place according to mitochondrial DNA. It’s difficult because according to http://www.webfamilytree.com, the dawn of the human species began at least 50,000 years ago but the beginning of recorded history didn’t start until 3,500 B.C.

Is it really possible that there could be a plant that existed during the majority of the evolution thus far of Homo sapiens? I’ve done the research, and it is true.

The Tasmanian King’s Holly Lomatia Tasmanica (Proteaceae) has survived for 43,000 years. This miraculous plant does not reproduce by seeds, and because it is so unusual in so many ways, it is now for the first time, considered an endangered species of plant.
