If you have an idea for a web app and you don’t believe that it will be successful or you don’t think you have the time to build it, think again. It’s possible!

We invited Stu Green of Haloweb and Great Web Apps to share with us how he built a web app to meet a particular need and launch it successfully in just three months.

The Story of My Web App

I always found project management something very scary. Agencies that I worked for used Basecamp, MS Project and other very complicated (and pricey) systems. I tried them myself but I really needed something a lot simpler and ‘less serious’. Because I had some spare time, and because I was already learning a ‘rapid application development framework’ I knew it wouldn’t take me that long to build, so I decided to do it.

I designed everything the way I thought it should work. Because I wasn’t a project manager and had no experience in that area there were no plans in my designs for Gantt charts or complicated reporting systems. Everything was very simple and fun to use. After three months of building the app I decided to share it with the world in November and since then it has rapidly grown to a user-base of two thousand. Apparently I was not alone in believing that there was a need for a project management web app that handled projects and invoices in a simple fashion.

The web app is called Project Bubble. I continue to develop and support it every day and I love seeing other users really enjoying using it. I particularly enjoy seeing people suggesting new ideas and us all gathering together as a community and discussing whether or not to implement these ideas. Because I believe in keeping things simple, a lot of the time these features don’t make it but it’s fun to be a part of something so agile and fluid in it’s development. I also believe that customer service is critical to the success of the web app (as I’ll explain later) and proving that your web app is alive with activity and social buzz will also keep user retention and satisfaction.

What About Your Web App Idea?

Some people, particularly entrepreneurs, go to bed at night and can’t sleep because they have so many ideas for websites. It might be some new community website that is focused on a particular passion of yours, or a unique web application that integrates with Twitter, or perhaps you have ideas for how you can rebuild your current site and utilize all the latest web technologies. This is your inspiration and your dream, but how do you make it a reality when you have a day job and twenty other websites that you look after?

With this inspiration you have taken your first step. The next step is making that dream a reality and building your web app, even though there are many factors that could stop you such as time and money. Here are some tips that will help you down that road of inspiration to reality. Start believing that you can make this happen, because you can.

1. Stay Motivated

These days it is very possible to build those web applications that you previously only dreamed about. A few years ago you would need to build everything from scratch, today you can benefit from the vast array of open-source code libraries and freeware design resources that are out there.

So much of the hard work has been done already so time shouldn’t be too much of an issue. Also a lot of the resources out there are free so money cannot be an excuse either. You have to stay motivated and believe that you can take your new project on. Commit yourself to at least getting a public beta launched so people can give you their feedback, and just block out some spare time when you can work on your web app.

2. Don’t Be Afraid of Competition

I learnt this lesson when I built Project Bubble. The reason why I wasn’t afraid of competition was because I didn’t think I was going to be competing with anyone! I built Project Bubble firstly for my own business, months before I ever thought I would release it publicly. Now it has become very successful. If I think about competition today part of me still wonders how on earth it could possibly succeed when you compare it with the greats. So don’t worry about competition. Your app will be unique, because you made it.

3. Plan Everything

Set deadlines and plan everything from the early development through to the Beta launch. You could even make wire-frames using online tools such as Mockingbird to help you with the design phase. Whatever you do make sure you’ve thought it all out on paper (or stickies!) before you ever get to the design or build stage.

4. Use a Rapid Application Development Framework

Development frameworks such as Ruby-on-Rails, CodeIgniter and Kohana have done all the hard work for you and are really easy to learn. I use CodeIgniter and I love it. On their website they will show you how you can build a blog engine in just twenty minutes! A lot of cool web apps that you see these days are built on Ruby-on-Rails including Basecamp and the beauty of using something like Ruby is that not only do you have that massive library of time-saving functions but you also have a huge community of other developers who will help you if you get stuck.

5. Get Feedback

Once you have your public beta live, use widgets like Get Satisfaction and User Voice to get feedback from your users. They will be happy because you are listening to them, and you will be happy because you will know straight away if something is wrong and also you will get ideas that you probably would never have otherwise thought of. Don’t be afraid of saying “No” to people if they suggest something that you don’t think is appropriate and always welcome peoples suggestions and ideas no matter how crazy they might seem.

6. Use Social Media

Once you are happy with your app, use social media to create a buzz for your app. Submit it to all the web app reviews you can possibly think of such as:

- Feedmyapp
- Killer Startups
- Great Web Apps

Make sure you are on Twitter and you have a clear link on your website so people can follow you. Get involved with your community, respond to them, and show that your web app is new, exciting, buzzing and active. Your users will be excited to be a part of something fresh and evolving.

7. Keep Trying

If it doesn’t work out, don’t worry just try again. I built a web app recently for car owners and it wasn’t successful at all. It wasn’t because the idea wasn’t original and it wasn’t the design, in fact I still don’t know why it hasn’t worked out but the point is it really doesn’t matter. Just pick yourself up and try again with another idea because one day you will just ‘hit the nail on the head’ and get it right. Practice always makes perfect.

Chances are you’ve come in contact with a piece of flat-pack furniture from Ikea. You may even have put a shelf or desk together with the help of an allen wrench and a single-sheet instruction manual. Ikea has successfully innovated in pricing, logistics, packaging, and store layout to become a global phenomenon.

But the lesson we, the UX community, can learn from Ikea isn’t directly related to their low prices, or making customers put products together themselves. Rather, the valuable lesson we can take from the self-assembly giant comes from an earlier point in a product’s lifecycle: the design stage.

When it comes to design, Ikea is a price-first company. Sure, they pride themselves of their Scandinavian design and ingenuity, but above all else they want their products to be as affordable as possible. As a result, the target price for a product defines and constrains the product design, rather than the other way around. Instead of specifying a product and then determining how much it will cost, Ikea decides how much a product should cost and then designs it to fit within the cost constraint. In an interview with CNET, Ikea product developer June Deboehmler said, “When we decide about a product, we always start with the price… Then, what is the consumer need?”

To some this may seem like a counter-intuitive approach. But in actuality, creativity loves constraints. It may seem that a cost constraint would be burdensome to designers but in fact it helps focus and guide their work. Even if cost isn’t the leading constraint (as it is with Ikea), it’s always a critical constraint that should be factored into design.

But in the world of software and UX design, you seldom see projects where cost is treated as a primary, initial constraint. Instead, cost is treated as something that’s derived from scope. Foundational problems with scope, budgets, and constraints are a setup for failed projects and poor UX. But how can we all learn from Ikea in a way that makes sense to industry? We have defined four lessons that will guarantee smoother projects before they even start.

1. Cost is a primary constraint

After they’ve outlined a product’s scope, most companies already have a strong sense of what they think the product should cost, or at the very least how much they can afford. But, in the majority of cases, rather than communicating both the scope and cost expectations to their vendor or internal development team, they withhold the cost information. This forces the development team to go through a complicated, error-prone process of trying to extrapolate a cost estimate from the scope. This is followed by a back-and-forth of discussion until the estimate comes into alignment with the original cost expectation. The cost expectation (or limit) was known all along but everyone has to participate in a ritual dance before it’s disclosed.

In most other settings, this practice would be considered dysfunctional, and an example of how poor trust and communication wastes time and money. But, oddly, it’s standard practice in software and Web development. If the cost expectation is fixed and present from the beginning—in other words, it is a primary constraint—why not simply let the development team know about it? Constraints give the team better understanding of what will be possible, reduces errors in their projections, and gets them working sooner.

Companies are generally wary of sharing their budget numbers upfront for fear of having the development team take advantage of their trust. Their concern is that the development team will charge the full amount in the budget even though the scope of the project should actually cost something less. But, in actual practice, this can’t happen because the scope is never smaller than the budget. For innovative, UX-focused product and website development efforts, the project’s requirements will always grow as large as the budget will allow—again, cost is the project’s primary constraint. The entire course of a project always entails an ongoing negotiation between the stakeholders and the development team about how much work can reasonably be accomplished, and how many requirements can reasonably be fulfilled, before the budget runs out. This is true whether or not the budget is initially disclosed, and whether the project is charged fixed-bid or hourly, because of the weaknesses of upfront planning and the ambiguity inherent to scoping documentation. If the development team is aware of the real cost constraint from the outset, their projections about what they can accomplish will be much more accurate—and, often, much more ambitious—than if they were left to make guarded guesses about what the cost constraint might be.

2. Goals are more important than specs

Initial scope and specifications documents are a form of guesswork product design often done by whoever owns the project, rather than by actual product designers. Such documentation is meant to serve as the definitive blueprint for the project, but have you ever (seriously, ever in your life) seen an early scoping document that turned out to be anywhere close to accurate when the project was done? This isn’t because the people drafting these documents are incompetent; it’s just that product design is something best left to, well, product designers.

And even for the most experienced product design professionals, the beginning planning stages of a project are the time when the least is known about what the project will actually entail. This is the worst time to have to lay out definitive specifications for the product. Complex, UX-focused software projects just don’t lend themselves to extensive upfront planning and specifications efforts—too much of the project’s actual needs won’t be discovered until design and development commence. So how, then, can project stakeholders ensure their vision and requirements for the product are met? By expressing their needs very clearly in terms of the business’ goals for the product. Goals are another form of constraint.

When business stakeholders attempt to build detailed specifications up front, they are attempting to extrapolate specific requirements from their general goals. If Ikea took this approach in their product design, businesspeople would spend a week in a conference room trying to describe in words in long, numbered lists, exactly what a chair or table should look like and what features it should have. This would obviously be silly; product requirements (for both furniture and software) are best expressed through design materials and prototypes, not through lengthy specs built by business stakeholders. The stakeholders’ role is to clearly express the constraining goals for the product and hand those off to product designers who can begin to design the specifics.

Business stakeholders need to ask themselves, what does it mean for a project to succeed? Is it successful if it fulfills on guesswork requirements built by the wrong people at the wrong time in the project, or is it successful if it meets the business’ goals and stays within its budget constraints? Business stakeholders have the clearest understanding of what the company needs the product to accomplish, but the team that will build the product will advise them best on how to meet the goals. Setting clear, high-level goal and sharing the project’s budgetary constraint gives a reliable development team the ability to plan accurately, reduce risk, and squeeze the most bang out of a buck.

3. Honesty and trust are mandatory

As we mentioned, many companies refuse to share their budget out of worry that they’ll be taken advantage of. If you tell a car salesman that you’re willing to spend $30K, he’ll try to sell you a $20K car for $30K. If, on the other hand, you keep your budget constraint to yourself, you may drive out with a $20K car and $10K in savings in your pocket. But when shopping for cars, you’re dealing with products that have already been built, and you’re just picking the one that suits you. But when you’re building software or a website, you’re building something entirely new with great uncertainty about, and flexibility in, the details of the implementation. The scope of the product is a direct function of its available budget.

It’s critical that you be able to work honestly and openly with your development team or vendor. You’ll collaboratively manage a project to ensure it fulfills its goals, stays within its cost constraint, and delivers the best value possible. If you don’t think you can trust your development team or vendor enough to share your budget with them, then you’re working with the wrong team. That lack of trust will undermine the success of the project by crippling your ability to collaborate effectively. You and the development team need to be partners in building a great product, not adversaries who are managing each other as risks. In an adversarial or arms-length relationship, the development team will always be trying to do the least amount of work for the most money. The business stakeholders, for their part, will be trying to take advantage of the ambiguities in the initial scoping documents to get the development team or vendor to do more work for the same price. Both parties will be focused on protecting their interests, rather than working as true partners toward the joint goal of a good outcome for the project.

This partnership with the design team is what Ikea achieves by staying goal- and cost-focused. While it’s uncertain what the product will look like, it’s never ambiguous what the definition of success is for that product. This business stakeholders and design team are working toward the same goals without needing to keep information from each other.

4. Abandon guesswork for concrete understandings

This guessing game of “what’s my budget” is very much a waste of time. Some business stakeholders think they couldn’t possibly guess what a project should cost, but in thinking this they’re approaching the problem backwards. When it comes to important, high-complexity, UX focused software and website development efforts, the question isn’t “what should this cost,” but instead “what can this cost?” One needs to have a number in mind—a limit that will constrain the scope and ambitiousness of the project. Giving development teams a pile of guesswork specifications documentation will just get you a pile of guesswork price estimates. What you end up with are unreliable specifications and unreliable cost estimates. By providing development teams with a specific understanding of your cost constraints, you make it much easier for those teams to make accurate projections about what will be possible. This also lets development teams show you other projects from their portfolios that had similar budgets. This, in turn, allows everyone to work from a solid understanding of the cost constraint with a concrete example of achievable scope. Development teams can help stakeholders by providing detailed information about the budgets and challenges encountered in their portfolio projects.

We believe that these four lessons are important to succeed in the high-complexity domain UX-focused software and Web development. Making cost a primary constraint and sharing budgets with development teams may require a shift in thinking by all parties involved. Business stakeholders need to trust the teams they work with, and therefore choose to work with teams that are trustworthy. Development teams need to earn that trust by clearly communicating what they will do with the information and by being honest and transparent about their projections and about project progress once it’s underway. And if there’s any doubt on either side, you can always say, “Hey, it works for Ikea”.

The one thing that strikes me the most is that we’re really seeing a huge development in user behavior analysis in order to make gadgets and app as simple as possible in order to mix with people of all levels of usage. If it ain’t easy you can be darn sure that the gadget won’t become the next big thing anytime soon.

So, with this in mind we are now seeing augmented reality make a swoop into our everyday lives. The applications are endless and the sheer fun you can have with it is just awesome. Augmented Reality really made a name for itself last year and already we’re seeing the incorporation of it in pretty much everything. And, now it hits the Social Networking as well, even if it just in the beginning of things. You will be able to point your iPhone at a person, the app will go through a facial recognition phase and voila, you instantly get that persons different Social Networking links and information. Just click and add. Simple as that!

It ain’t hard to see the next step really. You’re watching a movie, you point your camera at the screen and there you have it. You get information about the actors or actresses, producer, movie information and statistics…as saif, the applications are endless. So, let’s embrace this new feature. Let’s make it the next big thing and somewhat hurry up the technology development. We are the projected user group, we are the ones making this possible. So go out there and look up everything about it. Maybe we can even help develop it. I am sure we have tons of smart kids watching Bit Rebels eager to get into some cool stuff. As a matter of fact I think you all are. So get going!

It has been a very different holiday season as everyone got ready for CES this year. This is my second time at the show (first time was having the honor to pick up an award for the Gears team) and was a very different experience.

It was great to come out with some good news today: from Verizon, to video recording, to Flash, to 3D games. From a consumer point of view the Palm Mobile Hotspot is pretty sexy. Tethering has been a pain, and I was eyeing up a MiFi when I got to learn that devices will be able to become MiFi hotspots. Awesome.

All good stuff, but I am obviously most excited about the developer side of things. This year it turned out that we got to turn on the full developer program today in conjunction with the other CES news. A ton of work went into this first launch of the full program and there is a lot packed in there:

New developer portal

When you work with Ben, you quickly learn that things should be as polished as possible. He really lead the charge on making a great new developer portal with a spruced up look and feel throughout, and some good new content. There is a lot more in the works and the community has been coming together nicely to provide some fantastic documentation too. We now have a good foundation to move quickly on, and to really help developers.

PDK: On-ramp for native code via Plug-in Development Kit

One of the things I love about the Web is its diversity. It isn’t just One Community. It has sub communities galore. On the server-side you have Java and PHP and Ruby and Python and [insert every other platform] camps all at home on the Web. Even on the client-side, despite the ubiquity of JavaScript, you see many different types of developers.

I am really happy that we are providing the Plug-in Development Kit (PDK) that will enable a path to native code on the platform enabling a role that we have seen on the Web via Flash, Gears, QuickTime, RealPlayer, and on and on.

The goals of the PDK are:

• Easy porting of C/C++ applications to webOS, including those that use OpenGL ES 1.1 or 2.0
• Easy integration of C/C++ components to enhance the capabilities of webOS applications

Flash 10.1

Flash 10.1 fits into this picture too. I am glad that we have a path for Flash developers to get their content to our users. Adobe has been working very hard to make their engine work on mobile. This has got to be a tough problem given the nature of it (event loop etc) and they are doing great. Can’t wait to see the finished product.

Hot Apps

We want to put our money where our mouth is, and want to reward developers in a fair way, so we decided to offer $1 million dollars in cash bonuses to webOS developers through our Hot Apps Program.

Contests are interesting, but having been involved in a few myself, they get very subjective and judging can be difficult. This is why this time around we wanted to try to let the market do its thing and reward developers based on downloads and how many devices have installed their application.

Some high level info:

The Palm Hot Apps Program will reward developers of the hottest webOS applications with a total of $1 million. The top rewards of $100,000 will go to developers as follows:

• The developer of the free webOS application that’s downloaded the most between February 1, 2010, and May 31, 2010 will receive a $100,000.
• The developer of the paid-for webOS app that generates the most revenue during the same period will also receive $100,000.

Developers of other top free and paid apps will also receive cash awards, as follows:

• The next 20 apps in each category: $10,000 each
• The next 200 apps in each category: $1,000 each

To qualify for an award, your app – either free or paid – must be available to webOS users via Palm distribution programs between February 1, 2010, and May 31, 2010. In addition, the following criteria apply:

• The app must have been developed using the Palm webOS Software Development Kit or the Ares Integrated Development Environment. Since the Palm webOS Plug-in Development Kit is not widely available, applications utilizing this development kit or any APIs not in the Palm webOS SDK are ineligible.
• Apps must be available for download through an official Palm webOS distribution program (App Catalog Distribution, Web Distribution, or Beta Distribution). Apps distributed through non-Palm methods do not qualify.
• Apps developed by Palm employees or their direct relations are ineligible for awards.

I am a huge GitHub fan and I am really glad that we have opened up our Palm GitHub account with some goodies. We have various projects that contain sample code that go from ye olde hello world app, to Mitch Allen’s great news app from his book to the indispensable stylematters app that our great HI put out to show you how to make beautiful, usable applications.

I hope that this is just the beginning and that you will see more and more projects on GitHub to fork! Speaking of projects to fork….

Project Appetite

One of the new projects is Project Appetite which is an open source project showing how you can interface with the Palm application feeds that come out of our full catalog.

Early partners have already built sites using the feeds: PreCentral App Gallery, webOS App Catalog Viewer, the House of Palm, and on FreshMeat.

Now you can integrate the feeds yourself. There are a lot of different pieces in that one project, and I need some other posts to go into details on the front end code (some fun CSS transforms if you are in Safari on Mac and hit Ctrl-F!) as well as the backend (using Java, node.js and lots of good stuff). There is still a lot that we want to do to help people and this is just the beginning of that project.

Suggestion number one is to “embrace [the] cloud as an early-stage platform.”  Cloud computing’s only likely to get more and more popular as time goes by, after all.

Suggestion number two is to “follow in the footsteps of the Web giants and Web startups.”  Their deeper pockets and (possibly) brighter minds should set them on the best paths.

Next is the idea to “favor flexibility and cost over platform loyalty,” because people and companies certainly learned the importance of saving money in 2009.  Developers should “become passionate about user experience,” too, to help set them apart from the crowd.

Conceptual Development of this Design

I wanted to design something bright and striking for the team at the Tuts+ Network which had me diving into sci-fi material from the 70s and 80s, most notably were old Omni Magazine covers. Omni had a way of creating interesting imagery for their covers that were somehow vague enough to leave a lot to your imagination. This is the chord I wanted to strike with the poster, I even modeled the type after Omni’s title.

After several different concepts and hours of development, one version involved a colorful exploding astronaut, the poster finally settled on the version seen here . . . the space medusa I lovingly nicknamed ‘La Femme II’ after my previous poster.

Whatever your topic, niche or passion sometimes learning from other market places can give you inspirational ideas. In fact if you will just walk around with your head up and your eyes wide open then you will see that opportunities are presenting themselves to you all the time.

These ideas will help stimulate some ideas for you:

# 1 Visit a local exhibition

Go to an organised show of any kind and take your camera. Shoot photos of exhibits that are attracting a crowd, and of the signs, booths and all types of exhibitors. Collect any handouts, marketing documents, price lists, future exhibition schedules, and anything else that pertains to working or exhibiting at trade shows.

Take a notebook and make general notes on your observations. Using the photos and material collected, begin a reference file of how to participate and create effective exhibits at trade shows.

#2 Go to your local car boot sale

Take your camera and wander round to find the niches that the various dealers have carved out for themselves. Look at what people are buying and take pictures of interesting exhibits. Speak to the sellers and get an insight into how passionate they are for their market.

Make a note of items that catch your eye: note how much they are being sold for, condition and any other key pieces of information. Then go back and search the items on eBay and see if they are being sold there and what for.

#3 Take a walk around your local large Maplins or PC World

Find the largest high tech retail store in your area, and spend a few hours there. Look closely at computer accessories, video cameras, and computer networking technology.

All of these technologies have a learning curve and they are things that you can develop “How To ” products around.

#4 Attend a Free Workshop

Find a one day training workshop on any subject that interests you. Attend and pay attention to how the workshop is organized.

Take photos of the stage, the registration desk, any signs, serving tables, product displays and collect copies of all the hand-outs and marketing materials used to promote and manage the event.

Keep a dossier of all that you collect, you may need this material at a later date as reference when you eventually produce your own training workshops.

#5 Go to your local Borders or WH Smith

Any place with an extensive magazine collection is ideal, and spend some time looking at the number of magazines that cover specific niches. Look for trends of increasing or decreasing magazine covering specific topics.

Find and buy magazines on subjects you know nothing about, but seem interesting to you. Read the magazines you buy, especially the letters to the editor and the ads. Look for opportunities to solve problems. Look for interesting technologies and topics that might be your future niche.

#6 Take lots of photographs

Go to your nearest big tourist destination and again take your camera. Pick up all the free brochures, flyers, maps, free newspapers, and other marketing material you can find for businesses and activities in the area.

File these for later use as reference material for product ideas and take photos of interesting businesses, signs, promotions, exhibits.

#7 Make A Video

Start with a topic that interests you and make a mini documentary about it. Have an objective for the documentary, then structure it so it has a beginning, middle and end. Shoot some video footage, import it, edit it, add titles and background music, and burn the results to a menu driven DVD.

Learn what tools you need to get the job completed, and get it done. Learning to produce interesting videos is a strong path to profitable product development.

Summary:

Carrying out these tasks will give you a good grasp on where you can source inspiration for new products. Plus, you’ll have conducted some market research, discovered that there are people all over the planet who are interested in buying and learning a whole bunch of stuff .

But more importantly, you’ll have built a great resource of images, documents and material to help you get started.

Further, you’ll have also practiced your skills in product development by making a short movie.

Now all you need to do is chose a topic that is interesting to you, and has market potential, that can hold your interest for at least 12 months!

Palm says Ares is the first complete set of integrated mobile development tools hosted entirely in the browser. The goal is to make it easier and faster to create Palm webOS apps.

The Palm Developer Network Blog provides more details. “Ares streamlines the entire app development process, from design, to coding, to debugging, to app submission. You can preview apps right in the browser, and—with the Palm Mojo SDK installed—it takes just one click in Ares to launch your app in the emulator or on a webOS device. When you’re ready to distribute your app, one more click lets you package and download your app for submission to the App Catalog.”

Mobile applications are the new Shangra La for software development shops. This article in the Washington Post reports that more than 800 million iPhone applications have been downloaded and there are now more than 25,000 apps in the iTunes store. Clearly, there’s an enormous market for mobile applications. But, when it comes to choosing the best method for developing iPhone apps, it’s not always obvious which approach aligns with your business goals. This article outlines three different development methods for building mobile apps along with pros and cons to help you choose the development approach that’s right for your business.

Build In the Browser

The easiest option for creating an iPhone, Blackberry or Android application is to build it in the browser using Web development languages like HTML and JavaScript. There are some solid reasons to take this approach. For starters, if you’re a Web developer and are familiar with HTML and JavaScript, but not versed in the native iPhone app development language of Objective-C, you can build an iPhone application in the browser using the skills you already have. Second, browser-built apps are easier to build and distribute. They’re portable and accessible from multiple devices, which helps to spread the application’s popularity. Also on the upside, browser-built apps update instantly, generally load faster, are easier to read and update and offer more flexibility for future feature updates. Popular browser-built iPhone apps include Gmail and SlideShare.

The simplicity of browser-built iPhone apps attracts many developers, especially Web developers, but there are problems with this method. A major setback is that applications built this way can’t access native iPhone features like accelerometer, GPS, camera, contacts, etc. That’s a significant handicap when users are clamoring for applications that make the most of iPhone technology.

Create a Native App

Native applications built in Objective-C make full use of all the iPhone features: GPS, accelerometer, local storage, camera and more. This approach works especially well for robust applications, like 3D games. If your goal is to sell a complex, full-featured application, building a native application is your best bet.

So, why doesn’t every development shop build native iPhone apps? Because they’re built in Objective-C, an obscure programming language that can be difficult to learn. Not only are Objective-C developers hard to find, their skills don’t always transfer to other Web development projects. Finding and hiring a team of Objective-C developers is costly and not very practical, unless you plan to focus entirely on iPhone application development.

Take the Hybrid Approach

If you’re not ready to take the Objective-C plunge, there is a hybrid method that combines the browser-built approach with the benefits of native development. Hybrid development tools, like the open source PhoneGap framework, provide a set of tools and libraries that enable Web developers to build iPhone applications with HTML and JavaScript, but also provide access to native iPhone features. The obvious benefit here is that there’s no need to learn yet another programming language. Your JavaScript team can build these hybrid applications with ease.

Of course, every method has its drawbacks. In this case, achieving JavaScript performance can be a challenge. But, if your developers are already well-versed in JavaScript and HTML, a hybrid approach is the fastest, most effective way to add iPhone app development to your roster, especially if you’re building social networking applications, simple games and companion applications to websites. This avenue opens up options for cross platform development because iPhone applications built with PhoneGap also run on Blackberry and Android.

Mobile CSS Quirks

So many platforms. Take just WebKit. You can’t just say “WebKit” for example, because there’s no webkit on mobile. There’s iPhone Safari, Android WebKit, Bolt, Iris, different versions, etc. “If someone says my ‘app should work in WebKit’, laugh in his face. There are just too many versions of WebKit, so as PPK says it, there really is no “WebKit for mobile”.

That said, it’s good that things are starting to converge towards WebKit. As for the others: Blackberry browser “is dead” as they’ll be switching to WebKit; Mozilla is very late to the game; NetFront “is not very good”. Windows Mobile 6.5 is a big improvement on 6.1, and with an improved browser, but it’s still IE6 based. (‘Nuff said.)

There’s also a large legacy share, and if users are used to it already, that may be what they want to keep using.

Landscape versus profile mode is an interesting one for those of us desktop developers whose users don’t flip their heads around on a regular basis. NetFront has some very surprising and idiosyncratic ways of dealing with it.

The modes don’t stop there. There is also mobile versus desktop mode in some browsers; sometimes users can switch these in some obscure corner of their mobile browser preferences. Again, some surprising things happen in Opera and Android. Perhaps of more concern is the difficulty he had diagnosing the situation at first, when Android was showing three divs of the same width in one mode, and not in the other.

@media to the Rescue

Okay, what can we do about all this? Media queries are extremely useful and fairly well supported in modern mobile browsers.

max-width and min-width have subtle issues which PPK is currently researching, but max-device-width and min-device-width give more reliable results. orientation, aspect-ratio, and dpi (also needs research).

Mobile Javascript

Performance-wise, IE Mobile and Blackberry extremely slow. iPhone is middle ground. The really fast browsers are Opera on Samsung and N97, and S60 on Nokia E71 and N97. The bottom line is take your time with mobile Javascript development; you generally can’t expect it to “just work”; you’ll have to optimise. Also, don’t use iframes – they’re major performance hogs.

Mobile Connections

Tempting fate, PPK informs us that if someone in the room starts downloading movies, the netwrok gets slower for the rest of us.

Fortunately, browsers give us events to determine when user is going online and offline. Unfortunately, they’re doing it wrong. Only Firefox automatically detects offline; all the others require the user to explicitly say “I’m offline now”!

W3C Widgets

In general mobile development, best practice is to put all the core files on the moble phone, and only download the data. But how can we do that with web apps, where the code comes down with the data? W3C widgets offer a solution. You just create a single HTML page with the CSS, Javascript, and images you need; add an icon and config; zip it up; and deploy. PPK reports it works in practice, and works in a “write once, run many” fashion. There are still problems to be sure, but he says it’s the best interoperable solution we have today. But still many outstanding platforms: Blackberry (already talking about it), Nokia Maemo, Palm Pre, Android, and of course, iPhone.

Device APIs

Security risks mean critical device APIs will generally remain off limits to general websites for a while. Widgets have a better model, because they’re more self-contained and can be verified, although not perfect either.

One of the core philosophies of Google, and one of the reasons it has been so successful, is efficiency. It’s about both being as efficient as possible when serving search results and processing data and creating product that push the limits of efficiency for the user (as an example, Google’s trying to make communication more efficient with Google Wave).

Maybe that’s why we’re not surprised that Google is finally looking to tackle the underpinning code that runs the web. Today the search giant released Go, an open-source development language that Google believes will combine performance with speed, and one that the company probably hopes will reshape the development and software industries in its favor.

Go is based on the C programming family, one of the most widely used programming language trees in the world. However, the twist is that incorporates elements of Python (a preferred development language within Google) and the Pascal/Modula/Oberon family to make faster and more dynamic programs.

Why Did Google Make Its Own Language?

In its Go FAQ, Google explains the main motivations behind the project:

“No major systems language has emerged in over a decade, but over that time the computing landscape has changed tremendously. There are several trends:

- Computers are enormously quicker but software development is not faster.

- Dependency management is a big part of software development today but the “header files” of languages in the C tradition are antithetical to clean dependency analysis—and fast compilation.

- There is a growing rebellion against cumbersome type systems like those of Java and C++, pushing people towards dynamically typed languages such as Python and JavaScript.

- Some fundamental concepts such as garbage collection and parallel computation are not well supported by popular systems languages.

- The emergence of multicore computers has generated worry and confusion.”

Summary: Google believes that the web and computing have changed dramatically in the last ten years, but the languages powering that computing have not. But when you get down to it, Google could benefit a great deal from not only having a more efficient programming language, but having one it designed being used in thousands web and software apps.

The Ample SDK, a unique GUI toolkit working to create a cross-browser abstraction backed by open standards, has gone open source! With the new 0.8.9 release the GUI framework is now an open-source project licensed under GPL/MIT and hosted on GitHub.

More about the Ample SDK:

The Ample SDK makes it easy to create interactive vector graphics in the browser, including on Internet Explorer, and create powerful web forms and GUIs. Even better, it supports all of this with a standard API that is the same across all browsers. You don’t even need to learn anything new; the API itself is simply web standards such as SVG, XUL, DOM, the Selectors API etc.

Make sure to check out the Application Development Guide and Extension Development Guide tutorials which feature multiple aspects of client-side development. There is also a detailed reference API accompanying.

Sergey Ilinsky, one of the leaders of the project, reports that there is still a long way to 1.0, including polishing XUL components and implementing new visual themes and charts, but that he is targeting to have a 1.0 by the end of the year. Keep up the great work Sergey!

Wave servers belonging to Acme and Initech can now talk to each other with the opening of Google Wave federation.

A “wave” is a stream of messages that blends traditional e-mail, instant messaging, file sharing, and workplace collaboration tools. There have been plenty of supporters and detractors of Google Wave, Google’s bid to reinvent e-mail as a combination of such services. But Google’s implementation of Wave is going to be only one part of the story: outside developers will have the opportunity to build their own wavelike services using the Google Wave API set.

And those outside implementations will be able to communicate with each other using the Google Wave Federation Protocol, now that Google has opened up federation of wave servers. This means that if Company A built its own wave servers, it could interact with Company B’s wave servers through a public peer-to-peer network facilitated by Google.

At the moment, this is just confined to the developer preview sandbox that was the initial proving ground for Wave. Since its launch, Google has opened up Wave to a wider audience for further testing and bug squashing, with a formal launch not scheduled until early next year.

Wave’s complicated interface has not been a resounding hit with early testers, but the combination of external development and a federation service means that others could create more compelling ways to use the technology.

So, what makes PHP so popular? PHP is so popular because it is relatively easy to learn compare to other language. Furthermore, there are a lot of great tutorials for beginner to get started. Although there are a lot of resources for us, but coding a site from scratch is very tough. Luckily, there are a lot of reliable PHP Framework which can shorten the development time. These frameworks are supported by huge community and they are willing to help if you face any problems.

Without talking much, let’s start to look into these 22 open source PHP frameworks:

Most Promising Frameworks

1. Zend Framework

Zend Framework is an object oriented framework written in PHP 5. It is based on simplicity, corporate friendly license, and a rigorously tested agile codebase. The loosely coupled architecture also allow developers to use Zend components within other framework.

2. Symfony

Symfony is a PHP 5 framework which provides an architecture, components and tools for developers to build complex web applications faster. The official site provides a practical tutorial for Symfony beginner too.

3. CodeIgniter

CodeIgniter is another popular PHP framework. It has the advantage of having a wiki for easier navigation. New users can get started easily by referring to its documentation. It supports PHP4, which makes it can’t take full advantage of PHP5.

4. CakePHP

Using commonly known design patterns like MVC  and ORM  within the convention over configuration paradigm, CakePHP reduces development costs and helps developers write less code.

5. Prado

Prado require PHP5 and above to run, and it is a component-based and event-driven programming framework for developing Web applications. There is a quick start tutorial for beginner too.

6. Kohana

Kohana is a PHP 5 framework that uses the Model View Controller architectural pattern. It aims to be secure, lightweight, and easy to use. Kohana is originally based on CodeIgniter, but it is strict PHP5 OOP, which i think is more suitable to use in building new and large scale projects.

7. Solar Framework

Solar is a PHP 5 framework for web application development. It is fully name-spaced and uses enterprise application design patterns, with built-in support for localization and configuration at all levels.

8. Fuse

FUSE is a Model View Controller framework for PHP. Taking influence from other web frameworks such as Ruby on Rails and CakePHP, then adding in custom, intuitive features of our own design, FUSE has developed into a robust, stable platform for MVC development using object oriented PHP.

9. Yii PHP Framework

Yii is a high-performance component-based PHP framework best for developing large-scale Web applications. It has a full stack of features and written in strict OOP(require PHP5 and above).

10. Akelos PHP Framework

The Akelos PHP Framework is a web application development platform based on the MVC (Model View Controller) design pattern.
