Mind Twisting Art: Cartoons Mixed Into Classic Paintings

There’s a cartoon world, and there’s a real world. Cartoons are supposed to stay in the cartoon world, don’t you think? Whenever I see them branch out into the real world, it kinda freaks me out, like my brain can’t handle it or something.

When Richard wrote about these Disney characters portrayed as strippers, it skeeved me out a little. There’s just something about seeing those characters take it all off that’s just wrong. Ok, I admit the Tarzan was kinda cute, I’ve always had a thing for him, but all the other ones, no way.

Well, here we go again. I have more mind twisting cartoons-meet-real-life-art to share with you. These are famous cartoon characters mixed up with classic paintings by world renown artists. As bizarre as these may be, the artist that created them did a fantastic job incorporating both of these worlds and blending them together into one. I don’t have any information on the artist’s name or website so I can’t credit that person. If you know who it is, please share it with us in a comment below so we can thank him or her for the creative inspiration!

Creative Inspiration: The Toy Army Men With A Message

I’ve played with toy army men for as long as I can remember. The army men they sell these days are a lot different from when I was young. Now you can get fancy army men that snap together into a team, kind of like Lego blocks. But, my favorite ones will always be the old-fashioned, 2-inch tall green soldiers that you can get at almost any store for super cheap. They look like the army men in the movie Toy Story.

Have you ever thought about using army men for something other than playing army? Well, how is this for some creative and artistic inspiration? Designer Adam Katz is currently getting his Masters degree at the School of Visual Arts in New York City. The students there are working on a project called “Things I Have Learned In My Life.” Their professor asked them to create a typography solution to a lesson they had learned at some point in their life.

My guess would be that most students created a sign of some sort, probably with some interesting typography. Adam decided to do something a little different, actually, a lot different. He spray painted 1,500 green army men a reddish-orange color and then attached them to the outside window of a store right in New York City. Of course, since the assignment was to create a typography solution, the army men share a message. I’m curious as to what lesson Adam learned in his life that corresponds to these words. It’s all so detailed, so simple and so brilliant. Great job Adam!

WWAMD? Or What Would A Millennial Do?

Many things have been written about the millennial generation. They have been labeled everything from entitled slackers to tech savvy, new media socialites. They are highly creative but easily distracted, media savvy yet brand receptive. No other demographic is primed for the web like the millennial generation, and no other generation has influenced it more. Oh, and they like to share.

So what kind of creative inspiration can we draw from the millennial generation? Well, if you’ll allow me to generalize, there is plenty.

Influence Over Affluence

Millennials eschew traditional markers of social status. That doesn’t mean they don’t care what their peers think, in fact, they care a lot. But they tend to value influence over affluence. Your average millennial would rather be a blogosphere superstar working from their parents’ basement than a six figure corporate lawyer. In other words, they do it for something other than the money.

Most creatives started for the love of it, but in the thick of the rat race or on your tenth client-requested iteration, it can sometimes be easy to forget. Make it a point to seek out projects that inspire or mean something to you. Aim to be at the top of your game or a leader in your field, instead of measuring things in dollar signs (if you accomplish this, the money should follow anyhow). And never stop learning. There’s nothing wrong with money of course, but money doesn’t nourish the creative soul.

Narrate/Curate

Millennials are serial journalists and curators. They record their thoughts, ramblings and favorite media objects at astonishing rates, and they do it every day. The difference between them and your average serial journalist/curator, is that they do it all publically.

Most creatives know that it’s a good idea to keep some kind of journal with them at all times. Have some semblance of a good idea? Jot it down. See a great texture on that dirty subway wall? Snap a photo. Inspiration can spring from the most minor of incidences or details, so recording those traces of everyday life, no matter how banal, is an important creative exercise that should be practiced as much as possible. Something as simple as an interesting snippet of conversation you heard on the bus, a reaction to an interesting article you read, or even a muddled, half-baked idea can turn into a fruitful source of inspiration later. The trick is to be consistent, and to capture it in one place where you can review it at a later time. Once you make it a habit, you’ll be surprised how natural it becomes.

And another thing, don’t keep it all to yourself. Share some of those random thoughts or ideas with your network. You never know what will spark a conversation thread and lead to something bigger.

Something Borrowed, Something New

All creatives draw from the media they consume and incorporate it into their cultural production. Millennials just do it more overtly (and many times, more playfully as well).

Remixing pop culture is second nature to the digitally-native millennial who grew up in a media-centric and saturated world. Referencing their repertoire of pop cultural images and repurposing them is how they express themselves best. They like to produce it, they like to consume it, and most of all they like to share it. Now, design and culture have always been borrowed and repurposed from previous design and culture, and with great aplomb – ever heard of a guy named Walt Disney? But the ability to do this at the drop of a dime (or more precisely, the press of a button) became ubiquitous right around the time that millennials were growing up. This led to an explosion of user generated content, a heightened form of remix called the mash-up, as well as a new hybrid of media consumer: the consumer-producer.

Contrary to generations before, millennials feel that culture is at their immediate disposal, and they tend to take and remix without abandon. Their remixes can be as simple as engaging in contextual play to more complicated productions which rework the piece entirely. There are of course drawbacks to this production approach, but the fundamental objective is to play with culture, to express yourself through the multi-layered language of cultural references.

Remixes are great creative exercises and idea generators as well. If you haven’t already, try it sometime. As Jean-Luc Godard once said, “it’s not where you take things from, it’s where you take them to.”

Zero Footprint Shirts Made From Leaves

We write a lot on this site about ways we can conserve our natural resources and help the environment. Our beautiful earth is such a precious gift to us all, and sometimes I think we take that for granted.

Even though it benefits everyone when we are environmentally conscious, there are times, like with everything else, when it seems kind of silly to go to extremes. These shirts are, in my opinion, an example of that.

I get it that they are “zero footprint” shirts, but c’mon. They make me giggle more than anything else. Perhaps the designer, Dave Rittinger, wasn’t actually serious when he created these. Either way, they are very fun to look at. I think if I wore one of these shirts, it would make me feel like I was camping or out in the woods while I wore it in my office. I kinda like that! These shirts are created from leaves and glue, nothing more. Dave wove each shirt together himself, and then used the glue to keep everything in place. I can only imagine the time it took to make each one! One thing is for sure; he did a fantastic job choosing the leaves he used. The colors are spectacular, just don’t stand too close to the campfire. Thank you for the creative inspiration Dave!

Shoe Designs Inspired by Blow Up Dolls & Bubble Gum

I’ve probably written dozens of articles about shoes. I find that my favorite ones are always the unique interesting shoes that you’d never really wear in real life. They are the ones that tip the balance between footwear and art. Those are the best to me. Those are the shoes that I would like to put on a shelf in my office for creative inspiration.

If you would like to see a small sampling of what I’m talking about, check out these shoes made out of circuit boards, these origami shoes or even these “I’ll kick your ass if you get in my way” shoes. I guess this article with 13 pairs of shoes you’d never wear in public pretty much sums it up. Today I’m featuring another designer’s shoe creations to inspire you. These are fabulous to me, in an artistic kind of way. Again, I don’t think I would wear these in real life, but wow, they would go well on my imaginary shelf full of unusual shoes in my office.

Israeli designer Kobi Levi created this collection inspired by everything from stepping on a piece of gum (my favorite shoe below), to a blow up doll (the pink shoe), to peeling a banana. He says, “The shoe is my canvas.” I know what you are talking about Kobi, and I love your unique style! From what I can find, these shoes are not for sale; however, I’m sure you can check out Kobi’s blog for possible updates about that.

OpenTable Starts Its Own Group Buying Service with Half-Off Meals

Fresh off fantastic second quarter financial results, OpenTable is debuting a Groupon-like service add-on called OpenTable Spotlight that could help further increase profits.

OpenTable Spotlight is a group buying initiative that kicks off today in Boston and New York. Once a week the restaurant booking service will serve up a half-off meal deal to metropolitan diners who can band together to buy and unlock it.

The first OpenTable deal offers foodies $25 for $50 at a secret Boston or New York restaurant.

Clearly OpenTable is taking creative inspiration from Groupon — who now plans to combat would-be copycats by retaining repeat business with personalized deals.

Of course, OpenTable is not alone. Recently Yelp started testing its own “Daily Deals” initiative, and Wildfire released an app to help brands looking to capitalize on the group buying trend add deals to their Facebook pages.

Although a 50% meal discount courtesy of OpenTable certainly sounds appetizing, are we all so hungry for a deal that we’d make a Priceline-esque decision on where we dine? What do you think? Share your thoughts on OpenTable Spotlight in the comments.

If you look hard enough you can find creative inspiration almost anywhere, but one of my favorite places to draw inspiration from is photography. We’ve posted a number of photography showcases here on WDL, so I hope you find them as inspiring as I do. For this post, I’ve collected 21 amazing photos that focus on reflections. Reflections are normally overlooked and sometimes go unnoticed, but these talented photographers have made them the center of attention.

A Gigantic Spider Web Made From Tape – Creative Inspiration

Yes, you read that title correctly. This team of designers used only packing tape to create this huge spider web, which they called “self-supporting cocoons.”

These cocoons are so strong that people can actually climb into them and hang out. This Viennese/Croatian design collective For Use/Numen used 117,000 feet of tape, which weighs 100 pounds. You can read more about this incredible design here.

This installation speaks to me because it reminds me so much of something I made as a child. I was blessed to attend a very special school for two types of children: Deaf children, and children that scored unusually high on a psychological test that supposedly determined creative ability (where did all that creativity go now? haha). We created all day long at school. In 4th grade we created a whole pod out of packing tape. It was so large that we could all crawl inside of it. We set up a fan at one end for airflow and we even made different rooms, all inside the tape structure, which we called our “bubble house.” This brings back fun memories of that experience!

Chatroulette Continues to Spur Creativity With Speed Painting [VIDEO]

Despite being 14% pervert, Chatroulette is turning out to be a font of creative inspiration. From Merton and Ben Folds to would-be Lady Gagas, Travelocity gnomes and Medieval parodies, there’s no shortage of unintended yet interesting uses of the video chat platform.

Enter the latest in this category: speed painting. Instead of composing a spontaneous musical composition about the person on the other end of the camera, one visually talented soul paints them on the fly. To appease the “old news!” hounds in the house, we add the disclaimer that the video itself is a month old at this point, but only recently surfaced to claim its 15 minutes’ worth of Internet fame.

FITC Toronto [Flash In The Can]

Inspiredology has been working on getting involved in the thriving digital arts / social media scene here in Ontario Canada.
As part of this new shift in becoming involved we have become a ‘Supporter‘ of this years Flash In The Can event in Toronto.

New to FITC events?

FITC has held 20 events over eight years, through 10 cities and five countries, with over 700 presentations and over 10,000 attendees. From Flash to motion design, to design and creative inspiration, to other technologies like Flex, Air and processing, FITC events stand as unique and exciting events that educate, challenge, and inspire. We began as a Flash Festival, and kept Flash at the core, however we have also continued to add more and more diverse presentations over the years, ever expanding the programming of our events.

What’s it all about anyway? Why should I go?

It starts with the presentations. Three solidly packed days of presentations, both technical and creative. Presenters from around the world have been hand-picked for their skill and talent, and all are eager to share and meet you. Most times, you will have five different presentations to choose from. It’s also about the networking. Being able to meet and talk to people who share your passion for this industry. Meet them at the presentations, in the exhibitor hall, or at one of the evening parties. Did we mention the parties? We don’t mean to toot our own horn, but FITC parties are legendary. Not that you should come just for the parties, but you could, if you really wanted to. We wouldn’t tell anyone.

Who goes to an FITC event?

Flash Designer, Flash Developers, Motion Graphic Artists, Digital Artists and anyone in or having an interest in Flash and digital media. From our technical presentations for the beginner, the intermediate, and the super advanced, to the inspirational creative sessions, there is always something to choose from.

19 Freakishly Beautiful Caricatures By Anthony Geoffroy

There are tons of sources of inspiration on the Internet. No matter what you are looking for, you can always find it there. As a designer, it can sometimes be hard to stay focused and inspired and browsing around the internet is one of the best ways to find new creative inspiration to get you going again. It doesn’t necessarily have to be about web design or anything in that genre, just something that will take your mind off things to refuel your batteries. Such a thing happened to me tonight. I was tired of all the coding and decided to take a breather.

I stumbled over the Behence Network site, which is a widely known network for painters, designers and such, and I started poking around. I usually do what I call “click linking” which means that I only follow links from each page. I don’t search for inspiration through Google for example. After a while, I started coming across moderate looking caricatures, soon I was slammed in the face with Anthony Geoffroy’s insanely beautiful caricatures.

These are some of the coolest, most colorful and well captured caricatures I have ever seen in my life. I am not exaggerating the slightest. His way of capturing each and every detail and heavily distorting it is just remarkable. His skills are beyond advanced and at first glance it looks so easy. Just a few strokes with the brush and it’s done. I don’t know if they are airbrushed, but they are truly works of art meant to be seen.

Mr. Geoffroy has focused on movie/television and music stars and among the ones he’s captured so far are Amy Winehouse, Elija Wood (Frodo), Bruce Lee, Kiefer Sutherland (Jack Bauer), Robert De Niro and Batman. If you’re searching for something inspiring and funny to look at, this is the guy to go to. Just let yourself marvel over the kilingest caricatures that are out there… simply amazing!

What Are You Thankful For?

Thanksgiving is fast approaching in the United States, but thanks to the internet, we live in a social media world that is not defined by borders. There are no limits to the people we come in contact with and the different cultures they each represent.

So, as I was deciding to write this article, I wanted to get a diverse group of people to answer the simple, yet powerful question: “What are you thankful for?” I apologize for the length, but I guarantee you that reading through these inspiring messages from people around the world is well worth your time.

When I asked the question, no background was given, only the question. I chose random people from different backgrounds to include in this article to show that while we are all unique, we are all very much the same.

Danny Gregory has done it again. He’s nurturing and encouraging people from around the world to draw the little treasures of their lives. This book is a celebration of that special part of us that needs to draw, record, interpret, and play! When I got my copy, I was drawn like a magnet into the pages. This is a book that can be read and savored for a long, long time. There is so much, and it is all so rich. I carry it around with me throughout my day. Just looking at the beautiful cover makes me smile in anticipation.

The 50 artists have very different styles and approaches, which I found broadening. It is so much fun to read about their approaches, supplies, and ideas. I have taken a magnifying glass to some of the images already, so I can marvel at the smallest of details. I have found myself hoping that Danny Gregory will create a sequel – or – hopefully, a series of these books. An engrossing read. Buy it…you will love it. While you’re at it, buy a moleskin or other journal because you won’t be able to stop drawing!

I’m one of those Photoshop users who knows too much to want to read a book mainly for beginners, not because of ego considerations but because I would be bored and skip around. But there are also huge gaps in my haphazard Photoshop education. This book gives absolute beginners what they need without slowing down the more experienced user. It’s long enough to cover what it aims out to cover without being so long that you look at it and say, someday I’m going to go through that book but not today.

I was attracted to this book because of who wrote it (I watch Matt’s Killer Photoshop and Lightroom tips all the time), the topic, which of course is central to knowing Photoshop, and because of the great cover. I’m a small press publisher and believe me, covers matter. Many good books languish because they don’t appeal initially to the eye. And a Photoshop book should have a good design. It’s also well-edited, a welcome plus in today’s publishing world.

Anyway, what’s between the covers is just as delightful. I think the word I would use to best describe this book is methodical but not in a boring way. It’s comprehensive, but the way it’s laid out never overwhelms you. I know that when I go through this book a couple of times, I’m going to be flipping my way through layers like a maniac but a maniac who knows what she’s doing and knows what layers can do for her.

And, I LOVE the last page of each chapter, the “How do I….” question and answers. It gives me one place to go to immediately find all those absolutely essential shortcuts and critical pieces of knowledge without which one wouldn’t really be able to say they had a good basic understanding of layers.

Matt even has two companion videos on the book’s web site and you can download all the images used in the tutorials there as well.

I may not be an expert in Photoshop (yet) but I do consider myself an expert on Photoshop books and this one is well worth the very reasonable price. Have fun playing with it; I am!

Huge book that tries to cram in every movie poster ever made.
This book is about the “art” of the movie poster. If you are looking
for a great film with bad poster art, it probably will not be in here.
This book is more than a book on movie posters, but a great book on graphic design! Anyone going into advertising or graphic design has to have this book! The only problem I have with the book is it’s lack of coverage given to American and Independent film posters. I think there is way to much coverage given to foreign movie posters. Having said this, you will find that the foreign poster art really is amazing and gives the film a whole diffrent “feel” than the Americian poster art that we are used to. All in all, you will find poster designs for movies that you have never seen before. Last, but not least, the book is an excellent refrence/shopping guide to the wonderful world of movie posters.
