If I had a dime for every rumor that surfaces about an unannounced Apple product, I could probably buy myself an apple-shaped island bursting with iPad trees.

Last week, Bloomberg ignited the flammable Apple rumor mill with a report saying Apple is considering building a smaller iPhone that would only cost $200. The rumors of an “iPhone nano” gained steam after a Wall Street Journal report with more details about the device. It even had a codename: the N97. It was looking more and more likely that a smaller version of the iPhone was imminent.

The New York Times says throw all of that out the window, though. It has just published a report claiming Apple is not building a smaller iPhone, but that it is exploring the possibility of a cheaper iPhone, though it would “be similar in size to the current iPhone 4.” Like Bloomberg and WSJ, NYT cited anonymous sources for this information.

In the time between Bloomberg‘s report and today’s story from NYT, there have been hundreds — if not thousands — of news and analysis stories surrounding the mythical device. And don’t get me started on the countless “Apple tablet” rumors that dominated the headlines before the iPad’s debut.

It’s simply part of the allure of Apple; people want to know what product the technology giant is going to launch next, and the rumors start flying. Unfortunately, the vast majority of these reports simply are off-the-mark.

Actually, One Person Knows What Apple Is Planning

Apple is known for its secrecy. The company bolted down iPad prototypes to tables and tracked every single one to make sure there were no leaks. The one notable product that got past Apple’s walled garden, the iPhone 4 prototype, only leaked because an engineer with very bad luck lost it in a bar. Gizmodo, which bought the device, has never been invited to an Apple event since.

Is there some truth to Bloomberg‘s report on the smaller version of the iPhone? Probably, but the same can be said about the stories published by WSJ and NYT. Notice how these stories say Apple “has been exploring,” “is considering” or “is working on” a new iPhone model.

In other words, Apple is experimenting with potential new products, like every other giant tech company on the planet. Steve Jobs reportedly scrapped countless iPad prototypes before finally approving the device that’s on the market today. We bet that Apple has considered or even built prototypes of smaller iPhones, iPhones with physical keyboards and iPhones of all shapes and sizes. That’s just what happens when you’re trying to design new products.

Then again, we don’t really know, because nobody but Steve Jobs knows what Apple is thinking or planning. And that’s exactly why the Apple rumor mill will continue to churn for years to come.

Apple’s production partners are already hard at work on the new model of iPad, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal.

The fact that Apple is working on an iPad 2, of course, is common knowledge. The famously tight-lipped company rarely talks about upcoming product launches, and isn’t talking now. But Apple has never denied that it intends to follow up on one of its most successful products.

Nearly $5 billion worth of iPads have been sold in the three quarters since its launch. And a quick glance at the history of the iPhone, which launches a new model every year, suggests that we should expect to see the iPad 2 right around the first anniversary of its predecessor’s launch: April 3, 2011.

A prototype of the iPad 2 was apparently spotted by a Reuters reporter after the launch of News Corp’s iPad publication, the Daily, last week. And an unconfirmed report from DigiTimes in December said that Foxconn, the Chinese makers of the iPhone and iPad, had been ordered to manufacture the iPad 2 in market-ready quantities by the end of February.

The Journal report, which carries three bylines and cites “people familiar with the matter,” offers a few more nuggets of detail. It confirms the widely-held belief that the iPad 2 will have a front-facing camera, enabling use of the Facetime videoconferencing app. It says that the 3G version will again be available on Verizon and AT&T, with Sprint and T-Mobile still shut out. But it contradicts earlier reports that Apple will endow the iPad 2 with a higher-resolution screen, much as the iPhone 4 had significantly higher resolution than the iPhone 3GS. Apple is likely still working on a higher quality iPad display — it just won’t be ready for the iPad 2.

So will a slightly improved Apple tablet with camera be enough to persuade millions of iPad users to upgrade? Are there other bells and whistles we don’t know about yet? We have previously reported on rumors that the new device will have an SD Card slot, and that it will feature rear-facing and front-facing cameras. The publishing industry, in particular, has been interested from the beginning in evaluating the potential of Apple’s tablet in order to find an alternative option to the distribution of contents and to cope with the severe crisis of the sales of printed paper. I frequently buy and read magazines for the iPad including Time, Wired, Popular Science and recently I really appreciated the first release of Project, the Virgin’s innovative digital magazine designed specifically for the Apple tablet.

Leaving purely technical considerations aside (in some cases the final result is better than in others), the general quality of those magazines is without doubt extremely high and the integration between classic and multimedia content makes their reading experience very pleasant and engaging. But there is a basic limitation that could play a significant role in preventing their widespread diffusion, thereby making them not competitive in terms of economic return. The problem is not the limited number of iPads in circulation, as some may think, but the difficulty – or the inability – to download single issues of a certain magazines on your device because of their excessive size, which usually is around 400 MB.

In my own experience, each download may take a period ranging from twenty to seventy minutes if you are connected to a wi-fi hotspot. If you use a 3G connection, instead, the download is inhibited and a message warns you that, due to the excessive size of the file, you must be connected to a wi-fi to continue to the download. Apart from the frustration generated by waiting too long for the completion of the download (especially if you consider that there are an infinite number of alternative sources of information available in a few seconds, for free, just surfing the web), when the user doesn’t have access to a wi-fi network, he is likely to quit the purchase altogether.

This limit, which negatively affects sales volumes and profitability of editorial projects aimed at iPad users, will bring developers to rethink radically the structure of such contents and limit their size. Otherwise, a significant proportion of those users who have once experienced the frustration of the download will not want to repeat the purchase a second time. And perhaps the iPad will not be enough to revive the publishing industry.

The members of cartoon supergroup Gorillaz have been busy touring this year, but they could already have a new album — recorded on an iPad — out before Christmas.

As frontman Damon Albarn told the NME, he’s been working on the follow-up to this year’s Plastic Beach while on tour with the band. And although Albarn has previously declared himself a bit of a technophobe, he decided to record the new tracks on his iPad.

“I hope I’ll be making the first record on an iPad,” he told the NME. “I fell in love with my iPad as soon as I got it, so I’ve made it a completely different type of record.”

Albarn, who first gained fame as the lead singer of Britpop band Blur, says this album will have more of an “American” sound, like “an English voice that has been put through a vocoder of America.”

Albarn may be hoping to make the first iPad record, but he’s also part of a growing number of musicians using the Apple tablet to explore their creative options. Earlier this year, classical pianist Lang Lang used an iPad to play “Flight of the Bumblebee” during an encore at a San Francisco concert. And iPad DJ Rana June Sobhany will perform at the 14th Street Apple Store in New York City tonight.

Meanwhile, despite Albarn’s supposed technophobia, the Gorillaz — whose video for “Stylo” broke viewing records when it premiered on YouTube — will continue using digital and social tools to connect with fans. The band’s “Escape to Plastic Beach” iPhone app has been updated to accommodate its shows at London’s O2 arena next week. Markers throughout the venue will interact with the app, allowing fans to mingle with life-sized 3D models and visit the band backstage via augmented reality layers, which will provide peeks of the band’s dressing room and additional video content.

The Starbucks Digital Network improves on the concept of allowing free WiFi access to its customers, a concept the company only recently landed upon. Teaming with internet biggies like Yahoo, iTunes, GOOD, The New York Times and the Wall Street as well as others the network will offer a ton of content all wrapped in an iPad friendly format.

More interesting is that the network will be shaped to be especially popular among coffee shop customers. The news offered up will first be given a local flavor first. One Starbucks executive said that since they began offering free WiFi there have been about 30 million logins a month, a nice starting point for the new network.
