Apple is trying to make a deal with record companies that would allow it to offer unlimited downloads for iTunes music purchases, reports Bloomberg, citing three people with knowledge of the company’s plans.

It’s only logical: If you buy an iPhone app in the iTunes App Store, and accidentally erase it or buy a new iPhone, you can download it again. But currently you cannot do that with the music you buy on iTunes, and Apple is pushing to change that.

Apple is negotiating with Vivendi’s Universal Music, Sony Music Entertainment, Warner Music and EMI. If successful, the deal would allow iTunes users to download music they’ve purchased to several devices: iPhone, iPod and iPad, for example.

Apple has been trying hard to make iTunes more competitive to various music streaming services, such as Pandora and Grooveshark, where users don’t download music at all but instead stream the music for a monthly fee or the inconvenience of seeing a couple of ads.

After getting rid of DRM back in 2007, Apple has recently increased iTunes song previews to 90 seconds and tried (without much success) to add a social networking element to the service with Ping.

The ability to download music you’ve purchased to more than one device and to have a permanent backup of it online, however, would be a big improvement for iTunes for many users frustrated with iTunes’ current limitations.

She may have lost the Grammy to that band that no one has ever heard of, but at least the denizens of iTunes dig Lady Gaga. “Born This Way” is the fastest-selling single ever to grace Apple’s iTunes store worldwide.

The song pulled in more than 1 million downloads in five days and hit the number one spot on iTunes in 23 countries, according to Apple.

Still, despite reigning supreme over iTunes, Gaga has yet to vanquish her greatest foe — his hairness himself, Justin Bieber — when it comes to the realm of YouTube. She still sits at number two on the most-viewed videos of all time list.

Never say never, Gaga. Never say never.

Just how messy is the average user’s iTunes library? Pretty damn messy, according to a recent study by iTunes organizer software TidySongs, which culled disorganization data from more than 1,000 TidySongs users in 2010.

So what does the average user’s iTunes look like (well, average conscientious user, considering they all downloaded software to overhaul their iTunes libraries)?

Well, there’s likely 4,230 songs missing artwork, 490 songs sans an artist name, 1,984 jams without track or year information, and 814 duplicate songs.

According to TidySongs, the average user has 7,160 songs — but that data comes from approximately 1 million TidySongs users over the past two years rather than the 1,000-person cross section.

None of this is particularly dire or life-changing information, but it does show just how digitally disorganized folks can be — says the girl with a goodly number of songs titled “???” in her library.

Perhaps cleaning up one’s digital record collection could be a Johnny-Come-Lately resolution for 2011?

As announced in November, Apple has tripled the song preview length in iTunes from 30 to 90 seconds.

Unfortunately, the lengthier song previews are only live in the U.S. store, only work for certain songs in the iTunes catalog, and even then (as Apple originally announced), only songs longer than 2 minutes and 30 seconds have been affected.

It seems that not all rights holders were happy with the change. Some members of the National Music Publishers Association believe that Apple needs to acquire an additional license for increased song samples. Apple, on the other hand, believes (and we agree) that the longer song samples will benefit both the music labels and the customers.

The Beatles have finally landed in iTunes, following years of dispute between Apple and the iconic band’s rights holders and about 24 hours of rampant speculation about what the technology giant would be announcing following cryptic messages posted to the company’s website on Monday.

Apple, EMI and Apple Corps (the outfit founded by The Beatles) issued a joint statement this morning confirming the news. “It has been a long and winding road to get here. Thanks to the Beatles and EMI, we are now realizing a dream we’ve had since we launched iTunes ten years ago,” said Apple CEO Steve Jobs. Sir Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Yoko Ono Lennon and Olivia Harrison are also quoted in today’s official announcement.

Within iTunes, Apple has dedicated the full above the fold real estate to the band. Beyond links to many of the The Beatles popular albums (all 13 studio albums are now available in iTunes), the display features video highlights, The Beatles Box Set and a link to the band’s artist page. The Beatles even appear to now be one of the 2,000 or so artists on Ping, the new social network for music within iTunes.

As of Tuesday morning, The Beatles also dominate Apple’s homepage, with a link directing visitors to a special microsite that has been set up for the band, featuring more Beatles content and videos from an ad campaign that has been designed for the launch.

You know that cryptic iTunes message about an announcement Apple is making tomorrow? Well, according to The Wall Street Journal, that news is that iTunes will finally start carrying The Beatles’ catalog.

The WSJ is citing “people familiar with the situation” — a source one always has to take with a grain of salt — who report that Apple, representatives for The Beatles and EMI Group Ltd were recently in talks regarding the matter. Those same sources also warn that Apple could change plans at the last minute. We’re a bit doubtful of that note — why would Apple devote an entire ad to something that might not come to fruition?

If this deal does go through, however, it will mark the end of a decades-old dispute between the two camps. According to the WSJ, the Beatles and Apple have been at war since 1978, when the band said that the computer manufacturer infringed on its trademark — that of Apple Corps Ltd. and Apple Records.

Billboard.biz is in agreement with the WSJ — asserting that “‘Another Day’ (the words in Apple’s teaser message) is a Paul McCartney song released on his solo record Ram, but written during the Beatles’ Let it Be sessions.”

Apple has enhanced the iPad App Store with a Genius section that provides two new ways to discover iPad apps.

While there’s yet to be an official announcement, the Genius option started appearing for iPad users late last night according to MacRumors. Apple has also confirmed with Mashable that the feature is new for iPad.

The new “Genius” option is situated next to “Updates” at the bottom of the store. Users who click it for the first time will need to agree to its terms of service before activating the feature.

Just as is the case with iTunes music and iPhone apps, Genius is designed to serve up user-tailored recommendations. iPad App Store visitors can visit the “iPad Apps” section to review a list of recommended apps based on previous purchases. Users can hit the “Not Interested” button below each app suggestion to clear it out in favor of something else.

The Genius portion of the Store also includes “iPad Upgrades,” a section that will list the iPad versions of your iPhone apps.

Genius is a small but important addition to the iPad App Store designed to ensure that users uncover apps relevant to their personal tastes, and ultimately download and purchase more apps.

I’m sure you’ve seen the keynote – it allows mobile movie editing. It’s a pretty light feature set – this isn’t Final Cut Pro on your iPhone, but it’ll probably satisfy most of the Facebook/YouTube crowd.

It’ll cost only $4.99. What’s controversial is that it won’t run on anything but the iPhone 4 – including even the iPad (probably because the iPad doesn’t have a camera). A bit strange for sure, but we’ve seen before that Jobs has very strict standards for performance. You know that if iMovie hangs at all, even for a second on the iPhone 3GS, that he pulled it. Keep in mind that the iPhone 4 records in HD, so you’ll be editing HD. Almost hard to believe that we’re at a point in time where you can record and edit HD movies in the palm of your hand – but I digress.

We’ve seen Nokia show off mobile movie editing features on the Nokia N8. Will mobile editing be a big feature? Will people clamor for mobile video editing on the go? Will Android 2.3 or 2.4 or 2.x have mobile video editing added in? What say you?

In early December, Apple acquired streaming music service Lala. Just five months later, Lala is shutting its doors.

The Apple-owned service is no longer accepting new users and, according to a message on its website, come May 31 it will cease operations for existing members as well.

TUAW writes that Lala users with outstanding credit balances will have those balances transferred over as iTunes store credit. Users will also “receive a credit in the amount of your Lala web song purchases for use on Apple’s iTunes Store,” the site says.

While Lala will soon no longer be in service — and there’s still no word from Apple on its plans for integration — Apple could still very well have plans to use the technology to power an iTunes in the cloud.

A new app might be coming to the App Store quite soon, if one developer has his way. This application would accomplish the technologically simple but economically/politically complicated task of syncing a user’s iTunes library with his iDevice of choice over a Wi-Fi connection only — no tethering required.

The video below is a sneak peek of an app called WiFiSync that might be coming soon to the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. “For the first time ever,” its creator writes, you can “sync your device with iTunes over a wireless network.” It appears that users could also use this app to share music collections between various other folks’ iTunes libraries, as well.

Naysayers are doubting that this app will ever make it through the App Store application process. However, Android users have this functionality already. So,if WiFiSync never hits the App Store, you can always go get a Droid.

The developer, Greg Hughes, is a second-year computer science student at the University of Birmingham in Great Britain. We wish him the best of luck.

Zillow also said it has added listings for homes for rent to its iPhone App. House hunters can set search filters by home price or monthly payment, and at the same time find both for sale and for rent homes within their price range.

Users can now share Zillow’s property details, including values and photos on more than 93 million homes via Facebook and Twitter, whether or not the homes are for sale, in addition to being able to email properties of interest to a friend or real estate agent.

"The response to the Zillow iPhone App has been incredible, with more than two million homes viewed on the app every month. People are clearly using the app to satisfy their desire for real estate information exactly when and where they need it most – on location while searching for homes and neighborhoods," said Spencer Rascoff, Zillow chief operating officer.

"Now we’re improving their mobile experience by providing even more shopping tools and home listings, and giving users ways to share what they find instantly with family, friends, real estate agents and social networks."

The Zillow iPhone App has been downloaded more than 945,000 times since its launch in April 2008, making it the most popular real estate app in the Apple iTunes Store.

Apple is rapidly approaching 10 billion song downloads. They’re counting down to the massive milestone download number, and doing it in style. But don’t blink or you might miss it.

To speed along the process — though it really doesn’t appear that iTunes needs the extra push — Apple is greasing the wheels and offering a $10,000 iTunes Gift Card to the individual credited with the 10 billionth song download. To increase your odds at the big iTunes prizes, you might want to keep your eyes on their nifty countdown mechanism (in fact I’m firing up iTunes as we speak).

The record iTunes event has been seven years in the making. In recent years, however, the song download rate appears to be speeding up at an astronomical pace, as less than two years ago Apple was merely touting 4 billion songs sold.

We’re going to keep a close eye on that timer and so should you if you want a chance at that $10,000 reward. Good luck.

Apple has silently rolled out a web version of its App Store. All you have to do is select the “Copy Link” option from the iTunes application and the URL will take you there. The site offers you a full description, pricing details and screenshots of any application from the App Store. Not a bad feature, wouldn’t you agree?

Furthermore users have access to system requirements, customer reviews, update details and they also get information regarding the developer’s official Web site and support pages.

The website does require some more tweaking and tuning as it looks like it won’t be able to compare to the iTunes application when it comes to actually browsing the App Store. Looking for new software or music will not work as good as on iTunes and you won’t be able to search for any specific applications from within the browser.

iTunes Preview already works with music content and users can now preview songs thanks to those 30-seconds samples that can be played within the browser without the actual need of opening the iTunes player.

It looks like Apple might slowly be moving towards a new iTunes concept: direct access to all the content available, music, videos and apps, from any browser connected to the Internet. Such a move sounds very interesting as it won’t require you to download the application on your device and maybe not even store the content locally.

Nothing is official yet and in the mean time we’ll have to stick to buying music, apps and video shows from the iTunes app. But it will be interesting to see what happens with the whole iTunes concept in the future as Apple is getting ready for even more content with the introduction of their new iBook store.

Back in November of 2009, Apple finally rolled out a web browser preview for music in the iTunes catalog. It let you view the albums page, see all the songs included on the album, their length, as well as price for individual tracks.

It didn’t however, offer the ability to actually listen to tracks, but Apple has finally decided to let us do exactly that. Head on over to iTunes Charts, click on an album, and move your mouse pointer over a track; you’ll see a small button that lets you listen to a short preview.

The tracks are encoded at 44.1 AAC 300+ kbits/second, and play with Quicktime. If you like a track, you can, of course, buy it from iTunes.

For better or worse, iTunes and the iTunes Store have become a ubiquitous part of the digital media experience. In fact, it’s such a common part of the experience that Apple just expects that everyone has it installed.

Consequently, if you click on an iTunes link in a web browser, iTunes either opens up on your computer or you’re taken to a page that tells you you need to install iTunes.

However, as Macworld figured out, that’s starting to change. Apple has just quietly rolled out some web-based search and viewing capabilities for the Music and TV portion of the iTunes Store called iTunes Preview.

Right now you can see iTunes Preview by going to the iTunes Charts page or by following a link from the music store created within iTunes like this one. You can now view an albums page, see the songs included on the album, the length, individual track price, and read review from iTunes reviewers. You can also browse through the discography of that artist and look up similar artists and genres.

You cannot, however, preview song tracks. For that, you still need to open up iTunes (or click on a “view in iTunes” button). You can also browse through movies and TV shows, but not to the extent that you can music.

iTunes Preview makes us wonder if some sort of web-based version of iTunes is on the horizon. As it stands, iTunes 9 is essentially just rendering WebKit pages anyway, so the ability to offer up the results on the web is already available.

If Apple were to embrace a more web-oriented iTunes, it could potentially open up the store content (the stuff that isn’t DRM anyway) to other devices. Apple has always used iTunes as a way to convert customers to using an iPod or iPhone, but that might not always be the case.

If you were wondering what’s Apple cooking other than the new Apple TV 3.0 software update — which by the way brings in iTunes Extras, Genius Mixes, Internet Radio and a redesigned menu for simpler and faster navigation, next comes the iTunes update to make the two play nice. Available as of right now on the company’s Software Update page, the new iTunes 9.0.2 not only brings an “improved look and feel” for the new Apple TV 3.0, it also manages (now’s the time to act surprised) the Palm Pre sync.

Apple is a company that doesn’t often jump bandwagons; they rather have everyone else jump on theirs. It is thus somewhat understandable that they don’t have an official Twitter account yet, except for the one that lists all the new iTunes Trailers.

However, as noticed by Tweetdeck founder Iain Dodsworth, Apple has recently added a couple of iTunes-related Twitter feeds, bringing the total number of their accounts to five. These are:
