Jeffrey Zeldman:
Lack of Flash in the iPad (and before that, in the iPhone) is a win for accessible, standards-based design. Not because Flash is bad, but because the increasing popularity of devices that don’t support Flash is going to force recalcitrant web developers to build the semantic HTML layer first.
This blog delivers stylish and dynamic news for designers and web-developers on all subjects of design, ranging from: CSS, Ajax, Javascript, web design, graphics, typography, advertising & much more. Our goal is to help you communicate effectively on the web with an engaging website or functional interface.

IT jobs will always be there. No matter how much outsourcing happens. The technologies you are talking about are pretty good and you will be able to get some good jobs.
While you are working on them also try learning the development for mobile tools. Thier is a huge market for mobile apps and with Google Android and Apple SDK you can create a lot of apps and sell them online.. Its quiet a revenue and very full filling.
Just a suggestion. Also please please please remember its not only important to know the tools but also the business. So dont neglect your knowledge of any business where you have worked earlier and highlight the fact that you have good understanding of the business behind the technology. Its this knowledge which will make you indespensible and an asset to the company. ( you will keep your job) also when you are on the job make it a point to understand the business and always think how you can better it.

I use it….it's still chock full of features, and yeah, I generally code everything by hand, because I know what it will do.
I know a lot of developers who use it (again, they usually do everything by hand in it), although I also know a bunch who don't go too far beyond Notepad++. You use what you're comfortable with, in the end.

Anything an iPad can do, a decent laptop can do better.
Get the most for you money — buy a Sony Vaio, Asus, Toshiba, Lenovo, etc.

- Notepad or Notepad++ (handles CSS/Java/C/C++/HTML/PHP).
- Photoshop/Gimp for image editing/scaling
Caveat, most of the folks that I do web design/development work for, view information on several different browsers, such as: IE (6 and higher), Mozilla, Firefox, Safari, and Kompozer.

You can easily achieve what you're trying to achieve by changing the visibility of the layers with code. If you have Dreamweaver available, look for BEHAVIORS in the help file.
