The latest version of firefox is the best imo

It could be a faulty addon like an extension or toolbar – run Firefox in safe mode – start>all programs>mozilla firefox>safe mode
If it runs without slowing down or crashing, it points to bad addon (go to Tools>addons to disable or remove any addon giving trouble)
also run ccleaner to clean browser junk files – free
make sure Firefox is closed when you run ccleaner
If you use flash make sure you have the latest version
download, close firefox then install
