I was in your shoes a few years ago and I feel your pain. You can learn all the SEO in the world but if you don't have a solid step by step game plan, chances are you won't get any results.
When it comes down to it, SEO is all about
1. Finding the right keywords to rank for
2. Optimizing your website to rank in Google for those keywords
3. Then building backlinks with those keywords

Actually the stock '96 Town Car engine has lots of potential and there are many performance parts available for it. It has the same 4.6 2-valve V8 used in the 1996-1998 Mustang GT. Two big factors to consider are how much power you want and what your budget is. A supercharger kit and custom exhaust system would be a good option to give that engine lots of extra power.
But modifying engines is expensive and you can buy a new performance engine with a warranty, which may be a better option. Look into performance 4.6 and 5.4 V8 crate engines (Modular design). Also check out performance fuel injected 5.0 and 5.8 V8 crate engines (Windsor design).
The stock transmission should work unless you want a different one. It may need to be modified to handle the extra power.
