Independent research boutique ChangeWave surveyed 3,171 consumers and found that consumer pre-launch interest in the iPad is high.
Data demonstrates that consumers are more interested in purchasing an iPad than they were the iPhone prior to launch. Also, 27% of existing e-reader owners indicated they would have purchased the iPad over the model they own now.
The study — which was conducted after the iPad announcement — also shows that 40% of respondents in the market to purchase an e-reader in the next 90 days say they will buy an iPad.
That number is quite remarkable on its own, but when compared against the respondents who indicated preferences for the Kindle (28%), Nook (6%), and Sony Reader (1%) the bigger picture starts to become clear. If these numbers are reflective of the larger population, Apple is most certainly a threat to Amazon and the e-book/e-reader industry as a whole.
Some other interesting highlights from the ChangeWave study include:
- Prospective iPad buyers are likely to wait a few months before they make their purchase. 20% will buy two to three months after release, 23% four to six months after release, and 19% seven to 12 months after release.
- 68% of prospective iPad owners are most interested in using the iPad to surf the internet.
- 25% of consumers buying iPads may cut back on previous plans to purchase other Apple products. 10% are putting their iPhone purchase plans on hold, while 9% are saying they may not buy the laptop or iPod they had previously planned to.
Given that the iPad launch date is just a few weeks away, we should soon be able to tell how accurate some of these findings are and whether or not the iPad will put a significant dent into Amazon Kindle sales.

That is correct, there is no way to forward the text messages with existing software. They have been promising SMS forwarding for a while. Hopefully soon.

I'll say the Kindle 2 instead of Sony Reader. Read here to know more:
I own the Kindle 2 and I like it very much. It is better than Sony Reader because Amazon provide good content support, and the number of books available in Kindle format is kept on increasing (right now there are 300,000 Kindle books). Sony Reader, however, many users complain that it is difficult to find suitable books.
And the main problem is that books on Sony Reader are much more expensive than that on the Kindle (tips: if you're outside the U.S. all the Kindle books you see will have a price of US$2 added. But if you choose to download to computer when you check out, the $2 will be waived. So you can get the books US$2 cheaper even if you're outside the United States, and you can copy the books to your Kindle through USB cable). And many Kindle books, magazines and newspapers are cheaper than the actual paper version. Other benefits of the Kindle over Sony Reader include the free wireless internet access (now available internationally in many countries), and the text-to-speech function.
For the books inside CD from eBay, if they are in formats supported by the Kindle then it can be read on it. See "Files Kindle Recognizes" section here to see what formats are supported by the Amazon Kindle:
And you know, Amazon gave a price drop for the Kindle 2 just before Xmas. It is now at a really good price.
Hope this helps.

The main competitor for the Amazon Kindle is the Sony Reader. In my opinion, the Kindle is the better option. Since Amazon is in the business of books, there are MANY more titles available through Amazon than through Sony, and the Kindle also has wireless. There are a few other readers out there, but they are much more expensive, and the advantages you might get out of them (slightly larger screen)aren't worth the added cost. The current Sony reader is second generation, while the Kindle is first generation, so there might be fewer bugs to be worked out than with the Kindle, but it doesn't seem that the Kindle has that many bugs to begin with!
Amazon hasn't said when a second generation Kindle will be coming out, so it will be a while. The current Kindle is an excellent book reader, and I think any future versions will only differ than this one in the bells and whistles. To be honest, I don't want or need my books to have bells and whistles, so I don't think it would be worth the wait, or worth upgrading to a second generation Kindle.
