I'd suggest going to your local auto parts store and finding their list of Haynes' manuals. A Haynes manual is published for (almost) every single car out there, covering the years that a particular model of car was produced. Then it tells you step-by-step how to fix problems, replace parts, and do most of your maintenance. Whenever I buy a used car, I stop on the way home to buy a Haynes manual.

In its quiescent state a row of felt dampers sit upon the strings stopping them from sounding. Once a key is pressed the responding damper lifts and a felt hammer strikes the string/strings. When the key is released the damper is pressed back onto the string/strings. If the sustain pedal is used it lifts all dampers allowing any notes struck to resonate including induced vibrations in unstruck strings.
Also the strings are arranged in a framework resembling a harp. The piano's wooden framework is designed to act as a tonal modifier and amplifier.

Just remember this very easy acronym CHON (pronounced KAWN)
C=Carbon
H=Hydrogen
O=Oxygen
N=Nitrogen
These are the essential 4 elements needed to sustain life.
In answering your question about the source of carbon, the plant can get it from both the air in the form of CO2 and also from the ground where the plant can absorb it from its roots. Additionally, the plant can get it from rain water that will deposit carbon on the leaves, stems and in the ground.
