Microsoft Exec Talks Bing Success/Profitability

In: web resources

4 Feb 2010

Here are a couple of simple facts: Microsoft’s online services business lost $466 million during the last financial quarter, and most research firms put Google’s share of the search market at least 45 percentage points above Yahoo’s.  Still, Microsoft believes Bing can be competitive and profitable.

Yusuf Mehdi, the senior vice president of Microsoft’s online audience business, talked to Reuters yesterday, and expressed a mixture of confidence and optimism on several fronts.  Much of that stemmed from his faith in a certain not-quite-cemented partnership.

"As soon as we close and implement the Yahoo deal, we have achieved a milestone: for advertisers, we are a credible No. 2," Mehdi said.

Later, Mehdi continued, "There’s no question we intend to make a profit. . . .  Clearly there’s a huge return in the search marketplace that can more than make up the investments we’ve put in to this point."

Bing (and perhaps Yahoo) fans should be happy to hear all this.  It doesn’t sound like Microsoft’s set its sights unrealistically high (note the "No. 2" comment), and at the same time, the company sees a way to make money off what’s generally been a losing proposition to date.

Now, of course, Microsoft and Yahoo just need to get regulators to approve their deal.

I agree with Earnest T. When I get on after a long absence I like to scroll through the questions asked and stared by the people on my contacts list. I don't have a huge list like E.T. does I am a little more selective, but the people that I do have star many questions that are not main stream so I have the benefit of their time and effort finding interesting questions. That is how come I am answering this one. Earnest stared it.

You can't do anything about it. You have your stuff in Yahoo. Yahoo (and most other sites) SUBMITS all it's content on to search engines so people can find it. It's not googles fault – that's the business they're in – putting peoples information into their search engines because it's been submitted to them for that purpose.
Maybe there's something in your Yahoo settings you can change so you can stay hidden (from now on)???

Warning!
ANY site that is primarily for sharing info, connecting people etc. like yahoo, msn, forums etc will share the info on search engines. If you don't want to be on there – don't join these type of places or use a nickname or phony name.

There is no way to search just the marketplace. It is going to search all areas including your collection, the social, and the Marketplace.

You can not use Google analytics to find out which webpages link to your site, it only shows the clicks attributed trough these pages, If you want to look at which webpages link to your site then you should use Yahoo site Explorer or google webmaster tools

It adds on a good more to your work load for sure. It really all depends on your motivation and work ethic. It is completely do-able though.
