~Would you be referring to Dutch colonies in South America? Or French? Or Spanish? Or Portuguese? The Danish Colonies of the West Indies? And are you comparing them to the French colonies of North America, or the Dutch colonies or the English ones, or perhaps the Spanish, Swedish, Finn, Russian or Scottish? If the English, do you refer to those in New England or in the Mid Atlantic or in the South? The question is so overbroad as to be meaningless and idiotic. If you teacher didn't specify any better than you did, tell him/her for me that she/he is a moron. Or are you simply supposed to assume that such generalities can actually be discussed cogently and with some educational purpose? If so, the teacher is not only a moron, but a criminally incompetent moron.

It may mean someone accidentally added some spaces, or perhaps that you were reading the message in a software program that was not able to handle HTML

As others have noted "nbsp" is used to stand for "non-breaking space", used when you want to create some extra space in a line e.g., in a table. (If you type ordinary spaces with the keyboard HTML will not pay any attention to any beyond the first. Thus, although I just typed TEN spaces before this sentence, what YOU see has just ONE space.)

The actual HTML code for such things, including many symbols is always begun with and ampersand (&) and closed with a semicolon (;) But, if someone forgets to separate them it can end up looking something like this:

& nbsp;
