You should be able to do this somehow. Palm Pre let's you tether multiple devices through WiFi and/or hi-speed Evdo all for free like a Wireless Router.

No, they're not particularly common. It's more common for places like bookstores (e.g., Borders), coffee shops, or places like Panera to have wireless internet available if you have a laptop with you. Some of these have free access. Many public libraries have computer facilities though and there are some businesses that have computers where you can buy time. The prices are much higher than most places here in Europe.

Addiction works differently for different people. Some can smoke a cig a few times and never do it again. Some can smoke crack and never do it again (though more unlikely).
I don't believe coffee can increase or decrease someone's addiction to alcohol. The addiction lies within the individual. They control the ability to cease an addiction to alcohol coffee isn't going to magically stop them. It's all about that person's mindset, will power, and ability to control cravings/urges.
I also don't believe people are addicted to coffee. Evident by the fact that you don't see people pawning their TVs for another hit of java (unless of course it's for Starbucks).

If you don't have a data plan, your bill will be outrageous. Wifi does incur a charge but most importantly, the iPhone uses Visual Voicemail, which sends data constantly to and from AT&T. You will have quite the price to pay
