In Review, Upcoming and a CodeCanyon Contest

19 Jan 2010

Generally when we do a giveaway, the winners are announced the following week. Last week’s Myows giveaway was so popular we had to close the comments in just 24 hours! In addition to that, Myows generously gave away 100 paid accounts, which would’ve made for an interesting giveaway announcement (that’s a lot of names!). So, to cap off this week, I’ll be doing something a little different.

While pondering ideas to cap off the week, I thought it would be a good chance to take a look back at the popular posts over the last couple weeks as well as some of the upcoming posts and contests. Also, I would never leave you guys without a tasty morsel of contesty-goodness if I could help it — so read on to see what goodies you can grab from CodeCanyon.

In Review

Now that I’ve picked up the reigns here, I’m gaining speed and planning some great stuff for later. So far though, these are a few of the posts that have been most popular.

Instant Copyright Protection with Myows

As a digital media author and HTML/CSS template reviewer at ThemeForest.net, I know first hand how frustrating copyright can be — especially for those who pay their bills with the works they create. It’s difficult, at best, to keep an eye out for people infringing on your works let alone attempting to do something about it. Even worse, authors can be accused of copyright infringement by those who may know nothing about it, causing serious problems for (an often innocent) author.

Transitioning into 2010 I took a moment to list some of the planned improvements for this year. Those are still on the way! While I can’t give too many secrets away too far in advance, here’s a few sneak peaks of upcoming posts.

CodeCanyon Contest!

As a web developer, I’m always watching for new files at ThemeForest and CodeCanyon. The CodeCanyon marketplace has lots of great web application elements and even some full blown web applications. These are some great items to include at Web.AppStorm occasionally, even if they are a little more developer-centric.

CodeCanyon

Today the standard Tool of Choice for web developers and professionals is Dreamweaver from Macromedia (now Adobe) . While there are other tools, the reality is this is the defacto standard and just about all professionals on the MAC or PC use Dreamweaver CS and the Adobe Creative Suite which also includes Flash and Graphics editing tools.. You can find ot more here and try the trial versions ..

If you have forgotten your password, go onto the homepage and click the sign in drop down button. There will be a link saying 'Forgotten your password?'. Click it and type in your email address or username and they will send you instructions to get your password via email.
If for some reason you do not want to/can not do this then if you can remember your twitter username, you can type in http://www.twitter.com/your username] and that will be your page. If not you may have to make another twitter account with a different email (which can be easily made on http://www.msn.com) and then search for your old account on there using the 'Find People' button.

The first rule for a "successful" web designer is to determine the market audient of your client's website. Ask the client, a very simple question: Who's your Net audience? Are they "dial-up" or "DSL" subscribers? Once you determine the audience, then recommend the design authoring tool. For example, for "dial-up" subscribers, stick with HTML-based website. For "DSL" subscribers, go with Flash. Again, DO NOT recommend an authoring tool which fails to meet the client's audience because should the client later find out that you took the initiative [on your own choice] and created a complete Flash website [without his permission]; you may be in store for possible legal action against your choice of authoring tool.

The second rule for "successful" is to make sure that you have a clause in your web designer agreement which holds you harmless for any "merchantability" or "marketability" issues surrounding any of your website creations. Thus, no matter what happens down the road and the clients claims that he was sold an "unmarketable" or "undiscoverable" website [say, on major search engines]; you have a written disclaimer from the client that you are merely a "graphic web designer," not providing "any" SEO services; and you are held harmless from any suit for damages, directly or indirectly.

Good luck!

do a 'dry run' and time yourself, then decide to hire the maid for two hours and complete the cleaning yourself if need be.
