I used to put notes on the front, sources on the back. It was easy to sort the cards and put them in a reasonable order where all I had to do was connect them. I LOVE to write research papers, but I hated doing it "the crappy card way" as I always called it. Some people think it's easier, though.

Your other choice that does not (in some cases) involve electricity in some way is a portable propane heater. There are several different styles of these available.
