Yeah undergravel filters arent very good at all. I wouldnt really reccomend them for nearly any setup as they are a hassle to clean.

You actually can use a power filter but it has to be one that allows you to regulate the flow, same thing with overhead filters, as long as you can set the flow to something gentle you can use it for your betta.

I believe jQuery has a compatibility mode – jQuery.noConflict() – specifically for use when deploying with other frameworks. It's especially handy for use with prototype as they both use the $ function. Have a look at the sources below to see how to trigger it, it looks like you will need to tweak your jQuery scripts a bit.

Apples and oranges. javascript is used on webpages. RSS is just a feed source. You can use a javascript thing to display things on your websites.
