You'll need to go to a music shop and ask to try some mouthpieces, and take a couple of different reeds as well. That can make a huge difference. Take a piece that explores the whole range. Try jumps from low to high and vice-versa.
Ligatures can make some difference, but they won't "improve" a mouthpiece/reed combo, just change the sound slightly.
Only you know the tone you want. You'll have to experiment.
