I would go to western digital's website and download Data Lifeguard Tools and run the extended test on your hard drive. Usually when a hard drive is making scratching noises and what not, it means the drive is on its way to the grave. My advice would be to make sure you've got a constant backup of all your important files and to test the drive with the Data Lifeguard Tools-even if the drive tests ok, it still sounds like its gonna break soon so I'd keep everything on back-up and wait till its gone and buy a new drive.

It's sad how we are bombarded with junk mail every week. I've had to throw out so many trees.
