Sure thing, first select the image with the Selection or Direct Selection Tool.

Now open your Appearance Palette (Window -> Appearance or Shift+F6).

You will see all of the objects attributes including fill, stroke, etc. You should see the drop shadow listed here.

Single-click the drop shadow in the Appearance palette, and click the trash can icon (Delete Selected Item) on the bottom of the palette. The drop shadow should disappear.

*Note* As you've specified, this is the way to delete a drop shadow when used from the Effects menu. If you had added the drop shadow via the Filter menu (Filter -> Stylize -> Drop Shadow), then you would go into the layers palette to delete it.
