I'm 99% sure it's because your image is CMYK, not RGB. I just tested one and that's exactly what happened.

Go to the Image pulldown menu –> Mode –> select RGB (also make sure it is 8 bits/channel or you will lose some other filters).

You might want to look into the colorful sugar skulls used in Dia de los Muertos celebrations. Do an image search for this and you will see some neat and colorful designs. (one link is included to a photo on flickr.com) While the celegration is around All-Saints Day, it is more of a welcoming of dead relatives–thus the sugar part. So it's not really Gothic, like the Danse Macabre would be.
