There’s a new DisplayPort standard out there and the Video Electronics Standards Association, in short VESA, finally made it official. DisplayPort 1.2 is apparently industry’s “most innovative and flexible digital communication interface standard for transporting display, audio and data.”

Analog. Continuous carrier wave, modulated up and down by the signal it carries (voice). Typically only voice quality.

Digital. CD quality. Off and on instead of continuous. Can carry data as well as voice over the same channels.

You need the Mini Displayport to HDMI adapter cable. As long as your TV has an HDMI port then you can plug rightin from your laptop. if you connect up VGA then yes, you loose all the high resolution and great picture you are trying to get from the HDMI adapter.

Apple makes a MDP to HDMI adapter,it can be purchased almost anywhere,including online ( that is where I would buy it). The link below has the adapter and a 6 foot cable so you dont have to be so close to the TV.
