18 Mar 2010American telcom carrier Sprint-Nextel has been struggling lately, despite having the only live 4G network in the United States. In an attempt to lure smartphone customers from AT&T and their iPhones, Sprint is rumored to unveil an incredible-looking HTC Supersonic this week at the CTIA trade show. The HTC Supersonic will be a WiMax-enabled smartphone that Sprint hopes will highlight its 4G network in the US.

Several pundits regard HTC as currently producing the best smartphones in terms of hardware, and when you look at the HTC Supersonic, it’s hard to argue. The device will feature a (surely stunning) 4.3-inch OLED screen, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 1GHz processor, with 512MB of RAM and 1GB of flash storage. The 5-megapixel camera will have dual LED flashes and the device will come running Android (version unknown, hopefully 2.1).
It’s interesting to note that as the 4.3-inch is a bit bigger than most of the current slate smartphones (iPhone, Nexus One, et. al), HTC has included a kickstand on it, like some MID/tablet devices, so you can more comfortably use it when sitting at a flat surface. As mentioned, it’ll be the first WiMax phone in the US. Sprint has gone with WiMax rather than LTE for 4G, and they’ve been promoting their WiMax network as “the only 4G network in the United States” heavily in marketing.
As mentioned, Sprint has been struggling – they posted a $2.8 billion loss last year with a big drop in revenue. The mobile phone industry will host their CTIA trade show next week, and Sprint is expected to unveil the device then.
